Always craving this hot pot if i’m in the area. Can’t go wrong with the spicy miso base, however my friends LOVE the tom yom base & would recommend it to anyone who likes that lemongrass kick. Typically i’ll get the combo 10oz platters but can get by with just the angus beef 5oz if i’m only slightly hungry.The service is always a 10/10. We find ourselves vibing to the music playing, the laid back feel combined with great customer service makes this place unique and always a pleasure to visit. Thank you to the owner who is so welcoming, he even treated us to some hot sake during our visit! We appreciate you!

Been here a few times, bumped into the owner and he offered us drinks while we wait. Got a table outside, thankfully the weather was nice. Have a good selection of meats to choose from. Alcohol was also available in good options to choose from.

Amazing experience and food in every way! We just came in from Dallas, never had Shabu Shabu. And we had the most AMAZING experience!! Food was INCREDIBLE! The owner and his whole team had the most amazing service I’ve experienced in a long time! Can’t recommend enough!

The waiter was extremely helpful! Being I never had shabu shabu before he spent the time to explain everything to me, then he helped me pick 2 delicious broths ( tonkatsu and creamy vegetable) and the best meats. Well worth every penny spent for the 3 of us! The owner stopped by and was so nice. Definitely will come back! The takoyaki and gyoza appetizers were amazing as well.

I had my first OC shabu shabu experience here and it was fantastic. Its located in an artsy part of Downtown Santa Ana with plenty of street parking nearby. I choose the spicy miso broth and the combo meat. So I got 5 oz each of pork and beef. Next time I would do the sharing option, its a lot of food and you get to choose two broths. The beef was very good, make sure you dont let it cook in the broth too long. The atmosphere was upbeat and the employees were very nice, I cant wait to go back.

The food was amazing. Very flavorful, the crispy tofu and fried fish balls were very good. The staff was super friendly and on top of things. I got a great drink recommendation from our server. The sunset rio which was very refreshing. The spicy miso was very flavorful and definitely worth it.

We had a great time at Kaizen! It was our second time having Shabu Shabu and we loved it! The costumer service was really good and our server was very friendly. The place was pretty clean and nice. The out door space was also nice. Their pork broth is so good and their ribeye is also a great choice of meat. The price is reasonable compare to other Shabu places.

One of my favorite places for Shabu. It locates in Santa Ana Downtown, and its next to the Yost theater, so parking is limited. The place has great vibe, they serve hard liquor and complimentary sake. My plate combo is Tom Yum broth with lamb and ribeye. The broth is absolute delicious, and the meat is fresh. Very great service. Servers are attentive, and well trained.

The broth here is fantastic. Normally at a shabu place, the broth you pay for runs out of flavor as it is just a little bit of flavoring at the top that gets sucked up as you eat your meal. However, here, the entire broth is so good that you can drink it or make it into a soup. This attention to quality is truly fantastic, and even after finishing my meal, I was still sipping on the beef bone broth, because it is that good.

I am in between a 4.5 and a 5 stars. We had a reservation to this place and when we got there, the host kept pushing us to the back to wait. We weren’t clear to what he wanted and kept waiting in the wrong spot and kept pushing back. This place is street metered parking or parking in the lot with a meter. They had outside dining, fortunately, we were able to sit inside because I was cold. The wait to be seated was less than 5 minutes.When we got seated, we were greeted by the owner. He introduced himself and gave us hot sake on the house, which was nice! I am a weak drinker and my boyfriend was driving, so unfortunately, some of it had to go to waste. If you are new joiner and not driving or a weak drinker, I suggest getting the sake!We ordered two combo plates and two cocktails. The combo plates comes with 2 meats, veggies, sauce, broth, and rice. One of the combo plates I ordered angus beef and pork belly and the other one I ordered angus beef and korabuta park. They were sooo good, especially the ponzu sauce! They didn’t advertise this, but ask for their special chili oil! It was very spicy with just 3 drops. I love spicy, so I’d come back just for the chili oil.For cocktails, we ordered the Sunset Rio and Passion of the Shito. Both were good. Order came out fast.The service was good. The restaurant was very busy, so we understand. They seemed a bit forgetful and didn’t check on us often, but they were very friendly and tried to be helpful. We kindly reminded our needs.Overall, I’d definitely come back for the food!

Brought the family to Kaizen last night for my mothers birthday. The food and service were flawless. You may be paying a bit more than other Shabu spots, but the quality is far superior. We ordered the prime rib eye with the beef bone broth and tom yum. Both were fantastic. And for those of you who prefer a lemongrass spicy kick to your broth, the tom yum was obscenely good! The staff was awesome also! Im excited to have finally found a spot that makes me feel like I have the quality Shabu I used to get in Tokyo!

Showed up around 8pm for a busy Saturday night. Was told about 20-30 min wait, so went next door for a cocktail until they called us when our seats were available. The owner was super welcoming and offered hot sake on the house. Got some shishito peppers to start. Great flavors and seasoned perfectly. Ordered the American wagyu and lamb for the proteins. The wagyu was fatty and tender, definitely the favorite. Staff was friendly and helpful. Would recommend all my friends for a visit.

This place could be so much more if the location was right. Currently this place resides in a part of Downtown Santa Ana redevelopment zone. Very hipster but foot track is non-existent. If this place were in Irvine, Tustin or Costa Mesa it would be booming.The cuts off meats are amazing as are the vegetable side dishes. The sauces are hugely subjective as Im more inclined to like the ponzu and gomme sauce from California Shabu Shabu. So youll have to decide.I love the atmosphere and decor of the place, very modern with a touch of old Japanese.Give this place a try I dont think youll be disappointed.Edit 9/28/19: we went there today and found that its under new ownership. But rest assured everything remains the same, good eats with a pleasant atmosphere.

Amazing!! This was my first time here and we immediately felt at home. The staff made sure we were sat quickly and offered us advice for the menu. The owner was there too and welcomed us. I also wanted to include how I overheard staff taking care of other customers and it went above and beyond. Seeing staff in a good mood and also seeing the other customers having a good time really set the tone of the place!For the broth I had the sukiyaki and the 5oz pork belly. The broth was sweeter and stronger than Ive had at other shabu but this also meant that the everything was very flavorful after cooking. Often I would have to rely on dipping my food for flavor at other shabu but found this time I could enjoy it straight from the pot! The sauces were also amazing so I could not resist using it a few times. My friend had the shabu shabu broth and couldnt stop praising it during the meal. I cant wait to visit again! 🙌

This was such an amazing shabu experience. Firstly the ambiance was great with good seating, great music, very clean. Second the quality of food was amazing. The garlic edamame was the best appetizer we got out of the gyoza, karaage, and edamame, though the wasabi and spicy sauce that come with the karaage take it to a whole other level.The main course soups were fantastic. Between us we had the spicy miso, shabu, coconut curry, and tonkotsu broth, all fantastic. The owner himself, Lamson, checked in with us, helped customize our sauces and gave us pointers onto how to elevate our experience even more. Definitely a new regular for us!

Instead of sitting in traffic on the 5 freeway, we decided to stop by downtown Santa Ana for an early dinner. My husband and I love shabu and tried pretty much every location in Orange County, so why not try this new location. I believe its only beem opened for a couple of months. Its tucked right next to Yost theater. Decor is gorgeous with a modern twist. They have a full bar!!We wanted to try the basic meat with their shabu shabu basic broth. So we ordered the large (sumo) size yojie beef and their large (samurai) Swai fish (because Ive never had swai fish with shabu before. They have a combo plate thats great for sharing (they do have a reasonable solit entree fee).The meat was good, Im glad it didnt come out with frozen slices (always wait for meat to thaw before cooking). The yojie beef wasnt too fatty. Swai fish was soft and tender (dont over cook in broth). Veggies and udon was basic like any other place. We opted for brown rice which was I understand can be hard in texture, but it was a really hard to swallow so i asked for a bowl of white rice, which was also under cook and a but hard. Work on the rice texture please!!Sauces=ponzu it was alright, a little too much soy sauce for me, I like it more tangy with a bit more citrus. Goma was good, no complaints there. They also have a third sauce Swisher which is sweet and savory which they let us try for free. It was too sweet for me. Each platter comes with only 2 sauces. Ask to try them before committing.Service was great we were constantly checked on they made sure we knew what we were doing. Overall good food and great experience.

Hot sake was room temperature. Meat quality was decent but soup bases weren’t very good. This is definitely my favorite shabu restaurant. The broths are amazing! The creamy veggie is my favorite (I’m not a spicy person), but it is very flavorful. The owner is super friendly, along with all of the staff. It is a nice portion of meat along with vegetables and noodles. Always leave beyond full and satisfied. Great music. Great ambiance. I came here to eat lunch with my friends while im down here for training. I wanted shabu so I was looking for places between us so we can eat. No regrets at all. the spicy miso broth combo was SOOOO good. SOO filling too. Soup wasnt watered down as most soup places are. Plenty of flavor with every bite. the veggies are SUPER fresh. Service was superb. We were instantly seated and were attended to. Three different gentlemen all checked in with us throughout dinner to ensure we had everything we needed. We ordered tonkotsu and beef broth with chicken and pork. It was so delicious. We spent most of the meal chowing down-no time for chatting haha!! It was incredible. I’ll tell you why. The meat simply wasn’t good enough for the price. The beef was ok but pricy. The lamb and pork were meh in quality, and the cut were too thick. A couple pork pieces that we got were way too thick for shabu. We didn’t like the soup particularly either.We spent over almost $60/ per person here (6 people in total, of which 2 were children ~10 years old), and we had to sit outside despite we had a reservation.I’m glad others had good experiences here, but it just wasn’t the case for me.

Loved this place, first of all, they were very kind and respectful to all of us. While we were waiting for our table outside we were updated regularly about our seating until it did happen. They gave us the option to give us examples of how to do everything. The workers are also very helpful and are always available to help you, very beginner/first time friendly to all customers. The food itself was great, the portions of food is a little large but thats more of a positive then a con. Overall they were great in all areas, Customer Service, Food, Comfort, all the areas. Would recommend, and could be a new experience!

Outdoor dining, DO NOT RECOMMEND. I took a date here and signed in immediately and the host said for indoor dining it would take 10 minutes. Waited for 20, went back to the host and said it would be an additional 30 minutes or outdoor dining will be seated immediately. Chose outdoor and that was a mistake. The whole time there were flys landing in our food and drinks. We kept sending back the dishes and drinks that had flies in them. And the waiter would return with fresh dishes. This happened like 4 times. I want to give 3 stars but I’m giving 4 stars because the owner gave us a free bottle of hot sake and kept checking in on us. The food is great! Just don’t eat outside.

I wish I could give more than 5 stars. This was without a doubt the best dining experience I have ever had.From the moment we walked in, we were treated with kindness. Every staff member was so warm and friendly, and even without a reservation we were seated very quickly.On top of that, the OWNER was an excellent host. He came by our seats multiple times and answered all of our questions and made sure we were comfortable.I havent even talked about the food yet.We had two of the broth choices, and both were phenomenal. The Tom Yum was my favorite; all the vegetables and mushrooms served with the meal were turned into delicacies after spending some time with the broth.We had to try the A5 Wagyu Beef, which exceeded every expectation we could have dreamed.We were visiting from out of state, and Kaizen Shabu is the #1 reason I will want to come back after I am back home.

I just went here the other day on a date with my wife and had a great time. The atmosphere was nice, boasting modern furnishings and almost club like music. The real highlight though was the food! The menu isnt overly complicated and everything we tried was fantastic. The meat was cut perfectly into thin slices, unlike some other Shabu Shabu restaurants Ive frequented, and paired well with the sauces they provided. One thing I will note is that we were never asked if we knew how Shabu Shabu style dinning works, which could be a bummer if your new to the dining style. That being said, maybe the staff was just too busy being SUPER NICE AND AWESOME 😊 Seriously, everyone including the manager himself were incredible the whole time we were there, even going so far as to give us some sake on the house since it was our first time. I will definitely be coming back here again soon!

I went here with my date and we each got our own shabu pot, she got the spicy miso and I got the tonkotsu. Both were solid. The quality and variety of meat available were both superb and the vegetables/sides that come with the meal are standard for shabu.The owner stopped by and introduced himself to us and offered a free round of sake on the house which we gladly accepted. I think I found my new favorite shabu place. It was so good that I wish I was still eating it right now.Came here with my sister and bf and made it for happy hour. Loved that they have it until 7 as I usually miss it cause I dont get home til almost 6. We ordered the crispy tofu, pickled veggies and pickled cucumbers. All of the appetizers were really good, I loved that that tofu was really soft and the outside was nice and crispy, and the dipping sauce that it came with was so good too. The cucumbers here were really good, I like the peanut sauce that was with it, and probably the best Ive had before.For my entree I ordered the Tonkotsu broth with the 5oz prime ribeye meat with double goma sauce. The tonkotsu broth was the best Ive had so far and I liked that it wasnt too salty compared to other places or wasnt watered down. The meat was fresh and they give you a good cut of it where it isnt too thin. The goma sauce was spot on delicious. Also I got an add on of the black garlic to add to my soup and its a game charger. It makes the broth taste really good like I dont need how to describe it lol but definitely its a great add on for you broth. Veggies were fresh here and love that they give you the clear and udon noodles and that for your broth they dont charge you extra compared to other places. Also, get the wagyu here, it was like butter and you get a good piece of it too where its not too thin.Customer service here is top notch, Cathy and Amanda were great! They were very attentive, and were always checking up on us, making sure we had everything and making sure we were good throughout our meal. There are a lot of good shabu places in the OC, and my previous favorite spot was Mokkoji......until I tried Kaizen.Ill be honest and say that the service here IS a bit slower, and I think that is a management issue, but the food here makes up for that. The layout of the restaurant is also kinda weird. There is no traditional table seating, as it is only bar seating.The owner, Lamson, is very inviting and super friendly. And he knows shabu. We ordered the tonkotsu and the tom yum, and Lamson recommended that we added the black garlic oil. That enhanced the soups flavor greatly. Great recommendation. Even without it, the soup itself was very flavorful. So flavorful that once you cooked the meat in it, you didnt really need any sauce because the soup literally soaked the flavor into the meat. Not a lot of other shabu places have soups this flavorful.The pot style is also really cool - its like a metal/clay-looking pot with a traditional handle to carry it. Nice touch. I ordered the angus beef and the quality is just very high. You can tell that the quality of the food here is very high.After we finished the dinner, we had room for the green tea white chocolate fondue. This is highly recommended. The Melting Pot doesnt offer green tea white chocolate, and Kaizen does it as well as they do.Lastly, this place closes at 12am on Fridays and Saturdays, while most shabu places are closed by 9 or 10pm on those days. So, you can get shabu late if youre in the area. Highly recommended as the quality of the soup and meats are just above the rest.

Wow, am I glad that we did.This place is tucked in between the Yost and El Mercado Modern Cuisine close to the foodie lovers 4th street market in Downtown Santa Ana. There is PAID private lot parking, right in front of the restaurant. And of course, BEER and SAKE IS SERVED!I ordered a Japanese old fashion Hibiki Japanese Whiskey and it was taaaaaasty! As for the food, I ordered the Spicy Miso broth with Samurai Sized Angus beef and my my wife decided on Sukiyaki with the Swaifish (white fish). Both orders were superb tasting and plentiful. Americanized shabu shabu, so flavors such as the regular broth is too sweet (even to my Japanese friend from Tokyo). Other oddities include a yogurt green dip for the karage. Definitely dont come expecting a traditional Japanese shabu shabu taste. That said fair overall for the food - nothing outstanding, nothing icky. Stick with the angus or higher grades of beef, which are good. Sides of vegetables, tofu, noodles are like other shabu shabu spots - decent. Rice is subpar - harder than it ought to be even after sitting in some broth. Some meat dips are tasty, some are boring. AC made the inside a touch too cold. Pot temperature was a touch too low got faster boiling, so time was spent just waiting for the food to cook. Karage better at Ikkousha ramen, Little Sheep flavors and selection are better, and price of $80 for Kobe+ Combo+karage is just silly vs most other shabu shabu spots for the amount of food (especially beef). Could easily do Tsuruhashi for $80 for two with far tastier bbq beef, too. Come to chat, watch the game, get some drinks while you eat Americanized shabu shabu, but if youre looking for delicious, other choices abound.
