Good food and excellent service. Decent choice of beer and sake. Japanese waitress was very personable and accomadating. Fish is definitely priced for the area. Overall, it was a clean restaurant and no nosense sushi chef.Would go again. Parking is difficult for the area.

My friend has wanted to take me here for a while because she says its the best sushi and everyone she brings says its the best sushi and she is not wrong. The service was so fast and friendly and the food was amazing. We started with the garlic edamame and also received dumplings. We had the Indiana and the Tempura of Doom, the dragon and the hunny. I dont know that I could pick a favorite, but I do know I want to go back and try more!

Shiku is the best sushi EVER! The fish is so fresh, the staff is so nice and attentive, and I thoroughly enjoyed my experience. I even made a special request and they happily accommodated! I come here frequently and I always recommend this restaurant to friends and family when they’re in town. Love it!

This place is great! Me and my boyfriend grabbed our order to go and they brought it out pretty quickly. The woman who helped us was super nice and personable, and she offered us waters while we waited. The sushi was yummy and we really loved the chicken udon soup. I can’t wait to go back and see what other dishes they have!

We came in on a Saturday early evening. Its a fairly cramped restaurant but they were able to seat our party of 5 relatively quickly.The food was prepared and brought to us within minutes of ordering. It was delicious and well worth the cost.The only negative of the experience was the delay in getting our check. I could tell the 3 ladies serving were hustling and doing their best to handle the dinner rush as it started. They were still very polite.I would definitely eat here again, and Id imagine it would be even better during a more relaxed time of day.

Loved this sushi spot in La Jolla. It’s very busy, so I highly recommend making reservations. The service is perfect, with their very kind and patient staff. Food was very good. Mostly good cuts of sashimi and great rolls. Really enjoyed our dinner here. Patio is fun - just don’t take the table RIGHT at the door. It’s noisy. ;)

We ate at this restaurant our last night in California. We have some pretty high-quality sushi restaurants where we live and have to say that we were beyond impressed! The food and staff cannot be topped! We value superb customer service and delicious food, and this place met both criteria! The staff is friendly and atmosphere absolutely delightful! Cannot say enough about how great this place is! PLUS, our dog could eat inside OR outside! What gets better than that???? HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Stopped in on a visit to La Jolla - small, casual and welcoming sushi bar, our server, Brian, was excellent and made great recommendations. This place was awesome for our Celiac / gluten free daughter as Brian expertly knew his allergens and they offered to modify any roll on the menu if it wasn’t already gluten free which we did. Sushi was excellent, creative and well executed. Great option right on Prospect in La Jolla.

I liked the interior of this restaurant a lot because of the giant windows that replaced the walls of the front part of it; I prefer restaurants that are well-lit over darker ones. The service was amazing and the waitresses that serviced our table were kind and welcoming, with good information to share when we had questions about this particular area that we were new to. Getting to the food, my family and I enjoyed it very much. The shrimp tempura udon had high quality noodles with a tasty soup base. The bento box had a delightful variety of side dishes in them as well. I wish that the fried foods were crunchier because the layer was thin, but they did well on not making it greasy. The sauce that they gave us to use for the fried foods could have been more savory because it was hard to really taste it and I had to dunk my food in it. Overall, I took pleasure in the entirety of it and would eat here again.

I had high expectations for this place but it was a let down. I waited 15 minutes for a hot sake. I had eaten most of my rolls by the time I got my drink. Just seemed super unorganized and chaotic. Sushi was good but not great. Don’t have a reason to go back.

Visiting from Chicago over the 4th July weekend. Stayed in La Jolla for 3 nights and had dinner here 2 nights in a row because it was that good. I mean seriously, I’ve had sushi and nearly all locations in Chicago, had sushi in SF, LA, NY….nothing comes close to this place! How this place doesn’t have a long wait list is beyond me. Amazing service as well. A+++

The location is perfect, pretty close from the nicest hot spots in La Jolla. If you are Alone or with another person I would suggest you take a table by the sidewalk. The environment is so cool. This is a great place for sushi. Our lunch special came out expediently and there was a good amount of it for what we paid, especially for this pricey area. Fish was fresh. The only downside was I think they were short handed in the kitchen and elsewhere. It took us a while to get out wasabi, ginger and soy sauce but when we got it, it was copious. After ordering a bulgogi sizzler plate, we waited 30-40 minutes before canceling the order. The industrious waitress bustling around the place definitely understood, as she had several customers inquire about whether their food was forgotten about as well. Based on other reviews, this sounds like this slowness in the kitchen is not the norm. I did see some hot dishes finally arrive and they did look pretty tasty. In short, pretty good stopover if youre looking for a place to rest after a day walking along the beaches and coves of this spectacular tourist area.

I was hoping for good—I was not expecting to have the best sushi I have ever eaten. I stopped in on a Saturday night, more bored than hungry really, and I kid you not, this sushi had me questioning all the other sushi I’ve ever eaten. The preparation of the halibut was incredible, and truly, the quality of all the fish was amazing. I’ve spent way more money on sushi than I did here, but I do not think I’ve ever had better. A very nice, small sushi bar. A good variety of fish and rolls. Nothing fancy, but the fish was fresh and the pieces were large. Fairly priced. With drinks and enough food for the two of us to leave full the bill was $68- that includes tax and two large beers. When we are in La Jolla well eat there again.

Really enjoyed my food. Walked in randomly during happy hour. Ordered Maguro/ Tuna sushi, shrimp tempura roll and “crispy” rice.The sushi was fresh and tasty. Careful they hide some wasabi under the rice.The shrimp tempura roll ( minus avocado) was perfect. ( crab inside also )And the crispy rice was ordered in a whim. It was a glob of rice tempura dipped and deep fried with jalapeño on top and some tuna. Very tasty.Would return and recommend

Annoyingly good:I was determined to rate this a 1 star at the start of my meal. Firstly, theres no working restroom for customers, the waitress did not even pull my chir out for me, and I had to ask to have my water re filled I didnt even get an explanation of the menu ( luckily Ive done the fill out order here style before) oh and the constant modern pop Christmas music is barely more tolerable than nails on a xhalk board.. Its like when I asked about a bathroom they saw me as a vagabond I stead of a hungry customer willing to drop some dime for good sushi. Id heard good things and was expecting a great meal. So when I was treated the a 3rd rate nuisance right off the bat and the prices were regular for most nice sushi restaurants (a good meal will set you back prolly 40-50 if your hungry) I was pretty miffed. However, the hot sake was Very good and at 8.00 fir 10 Oz a decent price. The fish slices were Very well portioned I got 2 peices of nigiri per order ( some crazy places only serve 1 if you see that- run) and the service got better. By the 3rd glass of water I didnt have to ask for it and they seemed to see me as an actual customer. Of course after a 10 Oz bottle of Very good sake mist iritations are soothed. Id say the quality of fish, sake, and the flavor turned my 1 star into a 4 star. I simply will not give a restaurant w/o a working bathroom for guests a 5 star review- but I intend to come back for the Chilean sea bass at 29.00 so they gave an opportunity to win 5 stars.All in all Id say come enjoy this restaurant :) .. just.. dont ask about a bathroom if you want quality service. I guess your bladder can explode its cool.

We ordered 1 order toro sashimi . I asked how many pieces come with 1 order toro sashimi first. She said 5 pieces . Then we got 6 pieces cause they cut thinner. The original price is 19, but the waitress charged me 35. I was rush on the way to San Francisco, so I didn’t really argue about it. So upset about it!!!!!! Fish is fresh for sure.

Favorite sushi place in La Jolla! The tastiness, selection, and wait times are fantastic. There are at least 3 no rice cut roll options for those doing the low-carb thing. The staff is incredible - the servers are so friendly and attentive! And given the quality and service, I find the prices very reasonable. Ive been dozens of times over the years with different friends - and everyone agrees this place is a gem!

My visit may not be representative of typical service, but I do not recommend sashimi or nigiri from Shiku.The maguro was somewhat warm and not of good quality. Coloration was off, texture was all right. The toro hand roll was thrown together, lack of presentation. Saba was fine (but it’s pickled, so shouldn’t be much variation).I would have thought a sushi place in a neighborhood like La Jolla in a place like San Diego would use better quality fish.

Expectation and reality, its like heaven and earth. It could have been better, it’s impossible to eat green beans at all, sprinkled with garlic on top, and the taste is kind of old. Since moving to the area, we have been to Shiku a handful of times and absolutely love it! Toshi and his crew always greet you with a smile and make sure you are taken care of throughout the whole meal!The fish is super fresh and you cannot go wrong with the sushi selection. Our go-to roll is the Casanova but all of the rolls have so many unique flavors that are worth a try.For the quality of food and the overall experience, the price is beyond reasonable. We love Shiku and it will continue to be our sushi spot.

As we were walking down the street of La Jolla, we walked by this place in route to another sushi place called Blue Ocean. Right away Shiku looked appealing but we already had plans on going to Blue Ocean. Well we get to Blue Ocean and it seemed a bit too fancy and had a 45 minute wait. So we said screw it and went to Shiku and my god did we make the right choice. Hands down the best sushi and hospitality I’ve ever experienced at a restaurant. The owner worked that night and was extremely pleasant to talk to. He told us a bit about his Japanese culture talked about how Master Chefs make their sushi. Made us feel really special! Highly recommend and I can guarantee you’ll be satisfied. We’ll be bringing our friends next time.

My group and I went at 5pm on a Saturday and it was pretty empty.. The waitress and workers were all courteous and the interior design was spectacular. Now, sushi can be quite expensive but there are always the cheaper rolls that make dining at this place affordable. Our orders were prepared very quickly. Nice spot just off La Jova Cove. Went for a happy hour late lunch after checking out the sea lions and a walk on the beach. I was one of a few patrons since it was midweek at an odd time. Not really impressed with their poke salad. I came here while on my lunch and really didnt find anything on the menu appetizing. The salad came out fast and I saw the chef make it. Shiku is a humble Japanese restaurant focused mostly on inventive sushi rolls. I much prefer their raw options, but admit they are few and far between. What rolls they do have, however, are great. Found thiis place on trip advisor. Wanted Japanese food so decided to give it a try. Greeted immediately and seated and given menu...only one, so we shared. She tben offers to give us another one. To which I replied, others have read it, and now it is only me. Vegetarian udon was good, bulgogi beef and chicken katsu were good too. We also ordered small sushi rolls which I thought we would get first as appetizers. When the main meal was finished, we inquired about the sushi. She said she would check. She did not come back with an explanation or apology. After a very long time, the suishi arrives, one by one. I guess it was sushi for dessert. Never did they offer to refill our glasses or ask how meal was. Rated 4/5 on trip adviser in La Jolla, I really expected the service to be way better. Will not come back here when visiting the area. There are so many more hospitable restaurants around.
