A very decent Japanese restaurant. Their food was not only tasty but the garnishing looked great as well. Each dish was very delicate. We ordered several dishes and I liked the beef tongue the most. The service was very nice and the atmosphere was pleasant.

So nice to try this Japanese restaurant out in Del Mar. This place has an amazing ocean view. It is really really popular. I have to say the service is extremely slow, that makes me almost give a 4 star, but I can tell they really need more staffs. The waitress is nice, she really tried hard to make everyone has service. But it is super slow…. We waited over 30 minutes to place our food order. Gladly the foods came to our table not too slow. And all the foods are very delicious. I love their menu, you can get almost anything that you want from a Japanese restaurant, even including sukiyaki hotpot and grilled beef tongue. I was craving for cold soba noodles, and I enjoyed my food. I just hope they can hire more staffs soon.

I was craving some sushi & found this spot awhile ago while I was in Del Mar. They have one heck of a happy hour menu. Some of the popular dishes are $5! I wanted to try some veggie items along with some fish / chicken dishes & they had a wide range of options.I got the veggie gyoza to start. Very good. The veggie inside was a bit bland but the actual wonton was delicious. Add some hot sauce and it was just fine! The chicken was perfectly cooked & tasted great. The yellowtail with jalapeño was fresh. Would definitely order this again when I come back! The seaweed salad & smashed cucumbers were SO GOOD. I cleared every plate here real quickly lol.I got mochi for dessert, you get 2 for $6. The strawberry & mango are so yummy. The mango was definitely my favorite!You really cant go wrong with a delicious spot with great prices & services. They also have a view of the beach from the outside seating! So its all around a great spot for your next dinner :)

My first time at this place. The fish was not fresh at all. This is just my opinion. Maybe others liked this place but I have eaten sushi in many different places and countries and this place was quite disappointing. Atmosphere was good. Highly overpriced for the quality of fish they served.

I stopped by some Shimbashi Izakaya for a beer and sushi after work today.Parking was super easy as it was mid week, and I easily got a table. During summer and weekends, it’s almost impossible to find parking and makes it harder to get to the restaurant.The sushi was really delicious, and tasted very fresh, they also had ice cold beer. The sushi rolls were OK.There’s some good prices from 5 to 6 PM for happy hour, and have a large selection of sushi and appetizers and rolls to choose from.

They were not attentive at all. I noticed that they kept serving the asian families around us first. I didnt even get to order what I wanted to eat so I got stuck ordering just an appetizer. It was too difficult to get their attention, so thirty minutes later I went to the register to pay the bill. The gentleman at the register looked busy, so I waited patiently and silently. He looked up and asked what I needed. I nicely told him that I needed to pay my bill. He said nothing, looked back down and continued doing his thing. About four minutes later, he left the register, so I went and sat back at my table. I didnt get to pay until 20 minutes after that.

Stopped here for a date night. I got the pacific saury, yellowtail with jalapeño, cucumber with sesame oil and a miso soup. My husband got beef tongue and the garlic steak. We also ordered the pink sake ❤️Everything was delicious, the service was fast and very attentive. Definitely recommend this place, it’s a great location, outdoor seating, convenient parking right below the restaurant and thy have a great variety of food 🍱

Its a little hard to find, but worth the effort. Its just up the stairs at the corner. After a hospitable greeting we were seated on a gorgeous patio under a heat lamp. The menu is on your phone via scanned code. The menu is huge! I had the Assorted Sushi Platter with six pieces of delectable fish and shrimp. We also had Veggie rolls and a spicy salmon roll. The wasabi was strong and excellent. The service was attentive. We are so glad we discovered Shimbashi Izakaya.

My mom is Japanese n a bit critical of cuisine at Japanese restaurants. Now days when you ask people about Japanese food they only know sushi, miso soup, tempura and teriyaki. Japanese cuisine is so much more than that. It has a finesse and understanding thats able to elevate the simplest ingredients to an elegance that turns into a work of art on your palate. It makes you appreciate the moment and feel gratitude for the experience. My mom began to reminisce of meals with her family when she was young as she perused Shimbashis offerings of Kimpira Gobo, Green Otashi, Akadashi Miso, and Yaki Onigiri just to name a few. The servers spoke Japanese which made mom feel comfortable. And best of all? Everyone was super nice! The chefs behind the sushi bar were totally cool, and absolute craftsmen. Being Izakaya style the atmosphere is comfortable, unpretentious.

We live near by and we were looking forward to try this place. We’ve been eating at the restaurants on plaza level. Food was okay, nothing special. Service was terrible took a long time to order and even longer for food to arrive the appetizers salad, all the food showed up at the same time, hadn’t finished eating when rudely told we have to leave while celebrating friends 30th anniversary because they had reservations, so did we. Restaurant is between a busy road and a walk path. No view and no atmosphere.

We just had a wonderful dinner on their patio last weekend. We started with sunomono, which i had been craving. Id even tried to make it at home myself, which didnt cut it. It was simple, fresh, and delicious.We also enjoyed a Kings role, langostino salmon roll, Philly roll, and Mango-something🤔 roll. Soooo good! We didnt leave a bite behind. Great flavor combos.

The quality and taste of the food --and its presentation -- is very good. The nigiri and fried soft shell crab were stellar. The service was prompt accept for one special roll which took way to long to arrive for the hungry diner who ordered it. The bulk of the restaurants seating is outdoors under a covered patio. There are nice ocean views from some of the tables, but other than that the over all ambience is rather pedestrian. Go for the food, not for the amenities. If you think that for $100 per person you should have table cloths and candlelight, this not your kind of eatery.

Ate here just the other day. Great food. Service was adequate, until the waitress told us we couldnt take happy hour food items home and said the fine print was on the menu and website which was nowhere to be found. Waitress then admits the rule is not posted anywhere but common knowledge to all. This is after I spent over 130 on sushi for me and the wife. After 10 minutes the waitress gave up, but unfortunately that 10 minute debacle costed her a tip of at least 35 bucks and one less loyal customer.

I agree with the people who left a review about how rude and unprofessional the server here can be. And looks like the manager doesnt even care about this issue.No matter how the food quality is a rude waitress can make your experience unpleasant at this restaurant.She kept pushing us to order quickly, then they forgot one of the orders so the 3 of us waited till the forth order for the forth person arrived. The appetizer also was forgotten until after we received the food and had to find the waitress to mention it to her because she never came to ask us if we needed anything.We gave a good tip because thats how a customer should be but I dont appreciate how the management manages their waitress quality of work!No wonder I was able to easily reserve a table while all the ocean front restaurants are always booked up!

I liked this place before sonce the price was reasonable and liked bento which available even in weekend. I visited here again on Sat lunch time since half y ago and found the menu price ridiculously high and the bento menu is now only for Min-Fri! The food quality was just normal but the amount was non-sense small and price is unbelibly went up to high. For example mediocre small amount roll was already 25$ and sukiyaki was 35$ for very small amount. I think the management changed? And I won’t come back again to here until they move back to previous tactis or management!

As a Japanese food connoisseur living in SF Bay Area for over 30 years, I came with high expectation due to its high rating of 4 stars but walked away disappointed. The Hamachi Kama was mushy in texture which is a sign of improper cold storage prior to grilling. The chef sashimi Omakase was $60 for 14 pieces and I boosted it to $100 since I had two friends with me, but it was a pitiful thin plate of 5 kinds fish; salmon, steelhead trout ( waitress described it as “trout” but the only red meat trout i know is steelhead which is a cheaper substitute of salmon used in hand rolls, never served as sashimi), tuna, hamachi, and tuna near belly ( but it is not belly fat toro). Each piece was only 1.5” X 0.75”X0.20” thin slice, the steelhead trout which has no texture could not even stand by itself as individual pieces and collapsed into a soft pile. The deep impact shooters with uni had uni the size of a small pea and none of us could taste the uni. Other orders were so so too. The waitress was attentive but strangely the hostesses was really cocky and rude for no reason. The only thing met my standard was the Asahi draft beer! A disappointment of my Del Mar trip. Would not recommend this place to anyone.

So over priced for bad food. Went here 15 months ago for valentines and it was amazing. We returned for Mother’s Day and it was terrible.I had a set menu special. My hamburger patty was raw in the middle and not very tasty. Who puts hamburger in a Mother’s Day special dinner at a Japanese restaurant? I thought it would have been special and it was just bad.The sushi rolls in my dinner were falling apart. None of the sushi we ordered was anything special and in truth, the Sushi we get from our grocery store is much better and 1/2 the price. My wife had the sliced beef which had 6 thin slices of beef and it just tasted OK/not good. The bill for two and a 4 year old was $205! waste of money. If I paid $60 for this meal, I would still be upset. It was just bad food.Don’t waste your money here go to any other Japanese restraunt you can find.

We came here based on a recommendation. Hopefully my recommendation to NOT come here is more helpful. We were treated so poorly that we ended up leaving before we were even waited on. We made a reservation for inside seating and were greeted by telling us they didn’t have room. We peeked inside and the restaurant was mostly empty. It is COVID time so we gave them the benefit of the doubt and agreed to eat outside because they had heating lamps. We proceed to sit down and a family came and sat 10 feet away and the staff came to move our heating lamp to give it to the newly seated people. We asked what they were doing and they said those people needed the heat. We only agreed to sit out here because we had the lamp. To top it off the people that were sat after us were immediately waited on while we were never spoken to once. We left and no one even tried to come up and ask why. We will never be coming back here and I suggest others do the same.

Great experience at this izakaya. The only downside for me is that the menu is gigantic, making it difficult to decide on what to eat and drink. But once those decisions were made the food was delicious and the sake flight was wonderful. Excellent Izakaya style food. Izakaya style is similar to Spanish tappas, lots of delicious small dishes. Everything is delicious, but the vegetable stir fry is particularly memorable.Located on a balcony (part of Del Mar mall) with lovely view of the ocean and the main street.Staff arent the most friendly, but they are always courteous and professional. Overall, my favorite place in Del Mar.

We really enjoyed this spot that we discovered during our vacation. We loved it so much that we came back for a second dinner. The sushi is delicious, well-prepared, and very fresh high-quality fish. We also enjoyed the special Yelp perk of a free Ginger cocktail for those who dine in. The service was quick and the staff was very friendly. They have a fun outdoor patio that overlooks the ocean but we didnt get to enjoy it during our visit since it was raining. The indoor dining is intimate and seemed to be busy on a nightly basis. We will definately be back!Tip--we ordered a hig-proced roll (king something) with tuna. It was absolutely worth every dollar.

Some of the best Japanese cuisine Ive had outside of Japan. Between the quality seafood, beautiful presentation and wide variety of a la carte items this is a restaurant you should definitely try. While its definitely not cheap, dont expect to pay more than you would at any higher end Japanese restaurant. They have a fabulous happy hour as well.

Shimbashi is a very nice place with some fantastic views primarily from the outdoor seating area. This restaurant has some fairly decent sushi and some pretty good bento boxes during the lunch hours. Aside from the superb location and fantastic seating layout, the food wont wow you but essentially gets the job done. ShimBashi Izakaya is one of my favorite restaurants to get sushi at. My wife introduced me to this restaurant in 2013 and we have made it a regular stop since. The restaurant is perched on the second floor of Del Mar Plaza, and offers outstanding ocean views, they also have an outdoor patio which is great. The sushi is delicious, kids selections are perfect.My personal favorite is the “Toro” it is perfect.When in Del Mar make sure you put this restaurant on the schedule.

Food is slaty here. Our family are huge sishi fans, and have high standards about where we dine. Our visit to SHIMBASHI last night was outstanding. High complements on the quality of the food and presentation. In addition they have an excellent selection of quality saki (albeit short) which did not dissapoint. The atmosphere is fun - but not loud and everyone there was having a grand time. I plan to return many times in the near future.Note: must try the Cheifs Pear Pie desert!

Since Nobu in Solana Beach closed I have been unable to find my favorite Psycho Scallops. Theyre not on the menu but Chef Yahi is from Nobu and he makes them! He calls them Killer Scallops. Well be back for those delicious spicy cucumber-wrapped treats. The yellowtail jalapeno appetizer is really good also. Very good sushi.

Grilled mackerel set meal.It was good because it tasted like I was used to eating in Korea. I was worried that the grilled mackerel would be too sweet.After eating, I took a walk for an hour at a nearby San Diego park overlooking the ocean. Parking was free for 1 hour, so I paid for the rest of the time, but I thought it would be nice if it was 2 hours free. However, parking is difficult in La Jolla, so I have to think about it.
