Best meal I had in SD this time around!Unassuming Thai restaurant that has my vote for one of the best meals I had in a long time.They have great lunch deals.The biggest takeaway from this restaurant is the unmatched flavors they produce from their kitchen. I’m talking flavors that will blow your socks off. Very comforting, tasty and flavorful. The food also doesn’t come from a can or anything that is cookie cutter. This is some real food cooked with soul. Thank you Chef!I would drive all the way down from Los Ángeles in a heart beat to get another meal.

We visited La Jolla and were looking for a place for lunch when we walked by Spice and Rice. So glad we found this place, everything was fantastic! The outdoor seating area was aesthetically pleasing and calm! Our food was excellent! We got the cashew nut curry and green curry! Service was quick and very kind! We will definitely come back when we visit La Jolla again!

Nice atmosphere, good food, and friendly staff. The Tom Kha with shrimp only had onions and green peppers. We asked for mild eggplant which was served right and the sauce was a bit light. The pad see you with veggies was good. The sauce on the ginger fish was fantastic. The halibut was overcooked and a bit tough. We got here at 6 on a Saturday night when it was just starting to fill up. By 7 there was a wait.

This place had the best Panang/Red Curry I’ve ever had! We ordered fresh spring rolls, spicy eggplant, and pad see ew. All the dishes were very flavorful and the ingredients were so fresh! Very underrated place, we’re definitely coming back here.

I had the Panang duck curry and it was beautifully presented, not too spicy and very flavorful. The servers were attentive, but not intrusive. The outside seating was peaceful with a fountain and space heaters, a great place and one that I will be returning to.

We Drove from LA county . Ordered the chicken bbq and green curry and cucumber salad . With all the thai bbq chicken that Ive had I consider myself an expert. This one here is the one you could skip. It tasted like it was cooked or reheated frozen . The curry had sliced of chicken all 6 pcs of it in a cup size serving . For the price you should expect more than one serving . The 3 $ cucumber salad is not what I expected its a cup of vinegar with sugar amd chopped onions and cucumber. . We always look for good dinning experience and sadly we put this place on the skip list.

Bomb Thai place. Stumbled on this place after visiting a cafe and this is definitely one of my top Thai places in San Diego. It is a pricier/nicer restaurant but the food was really good. I’d recommend the Thai basil noodles if you can handle spicy. Ill definitely visit here again. Friendly staff too.

Good food. Yellow curry was really good, so was fried lime tofu. Pineapple fried rice had nice presentation but flavor was slightly subdued.Service was amazing. We had 2 small kids and they were not cooperating and made a mess. The staff was very polite and tried to accommodate as much as they could. They were super helpful and kind.

Fantastic Thai Restaurant! The food is delicious and the service is excellent. They have multiple dining areas as well an outdoor patio to enjoy the beautiful weather in La Jolla. The restaurant is capable of hosting larger parties as well, if that is what you need.My family and I enjoy stopping in for dinner and it is a great spot to meet for lunch. The Pad Thai is perfect.

Nice atmosphere and great food make this a must-try. The service was personable and attentive, but not overbearing. We had crispy calamari with sweet and spicy dipping sauces as an appetizer. The presentation was spectacular and it tasted just as good. The water carafe had a large spring of fresh mint. Not only was it interesting looking, the flavor was refreshing. I chose chicken pad Thai for my main course. It was flavorful. While it didn’t have as much spice as I’m used to, the server independently offered to bring something that would make it spicier. We refused as it was pleasantly flavored without ripping-our-heads-off hot. We didn’t pack antacids so we made sure that we didn’t need them. The portions were generous so we didn’t indulge in the dessert menu offerings. Over-all we had a relaxing, enjoyable meal that was right-priced in a casual setting. You should try it.

We had the worst experience at this restaurant when we ordered the cashew nut chicken. Before ordering, we explicitly said that we were allergic to fish sauce and they ensured us that they do not use fish sauce in the cashew nut chicken. So we ordered the food for take out. We at the food and almost immediately, I started having an allergic reaction and I immediately had to use my Epipen to counteract the allergy. We have tried to call the restaurant many times to speak to Eric the owner but he is never around and the staff working there cant do anything without his approval. I will be contacting the health and safety board about the issue as this restaurant does not have a care in the world about peoples allergies. It would have been nice to speak to Eric the owner of the restaurant to voice our concerns but we have no choice but to voice our experience and concerns on Google.

Their Pumpkin curry will be one of the best dishes you ever eat. The appetizers are perfect size to share. Entree portions are huge in the best way possible. Paltry. Just pathetic. It used to be good years ago. We always got spinach wrap which was good serving of spinach leaves with small dishes of items used to fill the leaves like peanuts, chopped tiny pieces of lime, coconut pieces, tofu pieces, etc. with tamarind sauce. we went there two weeks ago. The spinach leaves were limp and very few. The fillings were paltry—hardly anything in each dish. Pathetic. We also ordered drunken noodles which had little flavor, small serving, no sauce. I felt liked we were duped and gouged. It was not cheap. I will never go to this place again.

I have been coming here since they first opened, in the 90’s. The food was fantastic. This restaurant was my first experience with Thai food and made other Thai food not worthy. My father owned a small watch repair shop at the Cove theater and every time I came to visit, my second stop was Spice and Rice. My one and only dish I have ordered was sweet and sour tofu/chicken dinner. After moving away from San Diego for a few years, I have returned. My experience at this restaurant has changed exponentially. The food is unrecognizable and no longer taste good. My question is why? I’m not sure if it changed owners or if the owner gave up on trying to do a good job. Please, don’t rely on your past success and not provide the utmost best experience for your customers.Thank you.

We were vacationing in town and tried this place this evening. We really wanted to like it as we love Thai food, unfortunately it missed the mark. We were seated quickly but it took almost 25 minutes to have someone come over to take our order and provide water, meanwhile other parties who were being served in another section ordered and received their food prior to when we got to order! Our food also took quite some time to come. When it was delivered, they tried to fit all the new plates on the table prior to removing the appetizer plates which caused an awkward shuffle with us having to hold the plates on our laps while they removed the others. The service is what was the downfall, the food was overall fairly good. Our appetizers were delicious (peanut satay and coconut shrimp) however 2 out of 4 of our entrees were a bit of a miss - I found the food was not made poorly, there just seemed to be a mismatch of the description of the food to what actually arrived. There was confusion over the check even after we were asked how we wanted it split. We probably got a server on their off night, but unfortunately it wasn’t a great experience and we won’t be back.

Stylish decoration and the servings are large. The service is average, no one came to our table for more than 10 minutes to propose anything. Avoid the shrimp dishes, five small pieces of shrimp for $16.95 (and tons and tons of vegetables including carrots) They also use tons of carrots in all their dishes. A little bit too much for Thai food. I also thought the soups were pretty bland. We had two of them. One of them had only chicken and bell peppers in it. (The other tofu and belt peppers) Who puts bell peppers in Thai soups? Not in Thailand. But overall it was good enough, but could be better, and more authentic with a little effort.

I’m confused. We came here because we were craving Pad Thai and the reviews were good. The restaurant was empty on a Friday eve which was a red flag. The service was slow and we were one of two tables present. The food came out quickly once we ordered but it was just not good. Really. Totally lacking in the delicious flavors of Thai food. I really loved this Thai restaurant because it is not expensive and the food is really good. One of my favorite dishes is the Duck Noodle Soup. It tastes very good. There is outside and inside seating. Even though it is on a street, the traffic noise is not loud but very quiet. The restrooms for this restaurant is all the way in the back. There are enough parking spaces around this restaurant. It is a great location for a quick lunch or dinner and it is a great place to invite your friends to.

My girlfriend and I often eat here (Id say at least 2 dozen times in the last 6 months) and generally order the Thai basil noodle, very spicy. At first the meals were delicious, perfect amount of spice and an all around fantastic dish. However, out of our last 6-7 visits this dish has been incredibly inconsistent with either no spice at all or its so spicy its not edible. And this is saying a lot, as we love spicy food. When we complained about how spicy it was the manager blamed the chilis (clearly its the chilis) but the meal literally looked like someone dumped an entire bottle of red pepper flakes on it, and there was no offer to fix the situation with a new dish and no offer of a refund. So not only were we out of our money, we were also left hungry. Poor business practice and we will no longer be visiting this place.

It was for good reason that Spice & Rice Thai Kitchen was voted Best by the La Jolla Light newspaper. Plus the staff is real friendly and the service is excellent. I always order the Spicy Basil Noodles with Shrimp. Its my favorite meal in the whole world. No one makes it better and we can eat outdoors.

It took us 2 hours to finally get out of here. The food was okay (despite some things with the 🌶️ hot pepper having no heat at all and some things burning hot). The restaurant was understaffed, 1 waitress for about 13 tables, so I understand it was mostly the managements fault. It took us over an hour to get our entrees ordered because the waitress wouldnt let us put them in with our drinks and appetizer. 3 other tables got served before us, despite arriving after us. And we werent checked on to see how any of the food was.. it was impossible to flag down the waitress for any help because she was LITERALLY RUNNING from table to table to the kitchen. They also had heaters, but they conveniently were all out of service? Disappointed

When I want fine-like dining with Thai Food this is the place I go. Ive tried the Pad-see-ew and curries and theyre all pretty good. You can easily substitute tofu or mock chicken to dishes and theyll taste the same as others. Food is not greasy and it can be adjusted to desired spice level.Servers are friendly and food came out in a fast manner. The Thai Ice tea is pretty good there. Dishes run around $10 per plate.

The only Thai place in San Diego to go. My family has been going there for several years, and is one of our favs when out of town family gathers. We have a large group with children, up to 20, so we try to go there around 5:00 pm when it is a little slower. They have consistently been fast, courteous, patient, and the food is always fresh and delicious. We order a large range of items but a family favorite is the papaya salad, rice with shrimp in pineapple bowl, pad Thai, grilled chicken satay, and fresh spring rolls. I have tried other Thai places and their food has never compared to this place. In fact, we are going tonight. Yea!

Loved the food and the service. All the tables were spaced apart. The waitresses were friendly, courteous, and they all wore their masks. Those who were dining outside were wearing their masks until their orders arrived.I had a delicous frwsh spring rolls with s nice sauce. At first I thought the sauce vingar based but I was so wrong. The sauce was more sweet and savory that helped make the spring roll taste even better. The portion of the fried calimari was quite generous. No, do not order a second after you drink the first one too quickly before your meal arrives. You will quickly find yourself near-comatose due to the sugar content, especially if you dont eat sugar very often. Also, dont get the sweet and sour chicken; its fine, but this place has so much more to offer. Shrimp: normally icky, with that squishy wet texture (thats what she said?) but fear not, my friends: coconut shrimp here is a total game-changer and for me to enjoy shrimp is truly a miracle. Enjoy. Panan duck curry: what is even happening on this plate because there is something wondrous going on with these flavors and I am so far on board I might as well be the new conductor for this train. Average service and the lunch menu option wasnt great value. I also ordered the tom kha hotpot with prawns. It only came with two prawns and they did resolve this and take it away, apologise and add more, but the soup wasnt very tasty and it was full of raw red and green peppers which were really unpleasant. I love thai food and have eaten at a number of places across California. This restaurant had some of the best thai iced tea Ive had at any other restaurant. The yellow curry was also delicious and came with little curry dumplings(dont know what they are called) that were amazing! The food can be pretty spicy, but you can change the spice level.

My family and I were visiting San Diego and went to Spice & Rice for dinner. I used to work here when I lived in San Diego from 1997-1999. The food was great back then. However, it was a different story when I took my family this time around. We order 2 Thai Teas and a Thai Coffee. Those were fine, it was the entrees that were the most disappointing. My 3 kids orders 2 Pad See Yous ($10.95 ea) and a Pad Thai ($10.95), my husband ordered a bowl of Tom Kha chicken ($5.95), and I ordered the Grilled Shrimp Salad ($14.95). The Pad Se Yews and Pad Thai were grossly bland. All you tasted were the rice noodles. Thai food is supposed to have a good balance of saltiness, sour and sweet, and at times, some spice. These entrees did not. It didnt seem like they used any fish sauce at all in the noodle dishes, which in turn made the sweetness from either the sugar or the sweet soy overpowering. As for the soup, it tasted like pure coconut milk and nothing else. Thai soups especially are supposed to have bold flavors. The Tom Kha is supposed to be sour, salty, spicy and sweet at the same time. All I tasted was the coconut milk, and the sweetness from that. Not much else. My shrimp salad was probably the only dish that had any flavor, but the shrimp was extremely overcooked. Grilled shrimp should still be tender and juicy. These were tough and rubbery. Overall, I was extremely disappointing. We paid $186 for an extremely disappointing meal. I did not complain to the waitstaff about the meal because after he took our order, he was pretty absent. As a rule of thump, you should at least check back at your table right after they take their first couple of bites, so that you can attend to whatever concerns or needs they have right away, then maybe a couple of times later to ensure that they acknowledge your presence and know that you are available. We had to flag other waitstaff down to get our food boxed up and to order our desserts. We ordered 2 Sweet Rice and Mangos. The pandas flavored sweet rice was alright. They obviously microwaved the rice again after having prepped it ahead of time because there were areas of the sweet rice that were over cooked and tough. It is fine to rewarm sweet rice in the microwave, I do it all the time at home, but dont do it so long that it causes the rice to harden in certain areas. All in all, the food was bland and the service mediocre. I would not waste my money at Spice & Rice. Everything here is pricey, so think long and hard before you end up spending $12 on a sub par noodle dish or $15 to eat overcooked shrimp.

This place is so good! I work in the area and this is my fav place to grab a quick bite. I’ve never had anything bad from here - usually I end up eating too much since it’s so tasty. So if I have one complaint it’s that I can’t control myself very well when I eat here. The staff is always sweet and super helpful. Sometimes I can be a bit picky bc of dietary concerns but they’re always happy to take their time and help me out. They also do takeout which is a lifesaver. 💕
