Ai combo prices are decent middle of the road and you get a good amount for the price. The taste is excellent. Salmon teriyaki is a good medium thick piece, unlike some places that slice it thin or have it small in size. Curry Rice was ok as I never found Japanese curry to be particularly exciting. Rolls provide good value.

Positive and warming atmosphere to the restaurant.Food:Ordered a lunch special (karage+ California rolls) and got more food than I expected. The food took a while, but tasted amazing and suited my palate. Authentic Japanese flavor. The miso soup was warming and comforting. The karrage was crispy and satisfying. Salad was fresh and balanced the plate.Overall super good. The only challenge would be if youre in a rush, the food takes a bit since they are cooking it for you. Better to enjoy the food and atmosphere. Would recommend!

I have been coming to happily dine and enjoy the aesthetic ambiance of Ai since 1990. The chef is a master at the art of sushi, the regulars at the sushi bar never fail to interest or amuse, and Ive always felt welcome.Since I eat alone quite often, I also enjoy eating out on the patio in the front with the bamboo and gentle breezes.Im very thankful that they survived the pandemic slaughter of restaurants!The food is reasonably priced and the lunch specials cant be beat for economy and deliciousness!The tempura is hot and crisp, the teriyaki is plentiful and yummy, and the lunch combinations give you so much wonderful food on one plate that theres plenty left over if you want to take it home.I should also mention their miso soup has a healing effect on me. When Im feeling down and foggy, one sip will start making me feel more energized and clear.It is a South Pasadena treasure!

Love love loved this restaurant! Staff were kind, friendly, and our server was just so wonderful! I feel bad because I forgot his name but he was wonderful! My friend and I came here after a long day showing kimono. Loved the food. I got the yellowtail sashimi dinner, amazing.

Yum-Yum n Dem-Sum!! Had the Beef Teriyaki Tempura, friend had the Sushi Special and both were served by the vivacious Karen (shes bringing class and elegance back to that most historic name). Didnt think the portions would fill me up but they certainly did.This place has been around for just over 40 years and still going strong due to the fine cooking & preparation skills of Fumito (or Fumi for short) brings fresh seafood, fish, produce, and various other tasty items every day. Great meals at a modesty fair price! Right next to the Ol Rialto Theater in South Pasadena.

This was one of my favorite restaurants for many years. Actually, decades. The ambiance is comfortable and it is nicely decorated.The sushi remains good but the combination lunches (once served in Bento boxes) have taken a nose dive. The servings are no longer generous probably as a result of the Bideneconomics which has propelled prices skywards. My question is why increase prices but reduce quantities? The once wonderful tempura was dry and overfried. The chicken was sparse and drowned in teriyaki sauce. And the prices on their beef has gone up drastically.Unless my last vist was a fluke, I can no longer recommend this place for lunch though I have no idea if their dinners have also taken a hit. It is too bad when the quality of food declines in places where their food was once something you would readily recommend.

I didn’t know authentic Japanese food until I went to Japan. Ai is very authentic and the service is friendly. The food was great! I recommend the sushi deluxe and eel and avocado roll.

Its an average Japanese sushi place. There is nothing unusually good or bad. I had Chirashi sushi, and it was good. The lunch special chicken teriyaki was also good, but nothing exceptional. The server was running around, but kept forgetting stuff. Maybe shes new? The place was a bit outdated, needing some fresh updates. The place was clean, but again, a bit old and needing some new stuff. The prices were average for Japanese in the area, about $30 per person for lunch without alcohol.

Honest, unpretentious, modestly priced sushi. My favourite restaurant since high school (over 35 years ago) Always come when visiting SoCal (unless its Monday [closed]). I usually get a Beef Teriyaki and Sashimi Lunch special and some hand rolls. Love the Scallop handrolls and Nesei style potato salad. Tatami room available. Added a bar in waiting area at some point. Parking in rear is competitive and tight. A South Pas icon! Yumi yumi yumi!

I decided to try this place on a whim. I just picked it via Google search. Here is my take…Pros:There is ample parking in the back. Parking is shared with other restaurants next to it.Wait staff was nice.The sushi chef came by my table to say hi.The ambiance is pretty nice.I had the green beans in garlic sauce appetizer and it was really good.Cons:I hate to say it, but the nigiri sushi was some of the worst I have had in my life. It was cut very thick and sloppy. Pieces were inconsistent. It was fresh. It won’t get you sick, but the presentation is bad as though there is little care taken. Sushi is an art. This was not art.When I ordered, the waiter did say they do not have a sushi menu, but they are happy to make it. Maybe that was a red flag, I dunno. So maybe this is a great place if you want combination plates with teriyaki and tempura, etc. Maybe even their specialty rolls are good. Not sure. I wanted traditional sushi though. This is just not the place for it. Hope this helps.

The prices are good, the fish is fresh, I would have rated 5 but our server was not the best, we had to keep asking her to bring basic things. We were served miso soup but not given spoons. We were sat and she took our drink order but did not give us menus or the QR scan card until we asked. Just seemed very inattentive and forgetful. Probably a bad day, we will try again but ask to be seated with a different server.

Lets hear it for the lunch special! It changes every day, and if it looks like you would enjoy it, order it. In my case it was shrimp and sauteed vegetables for $9.40.But wait, theres more, a lot more. Included was a small salad with a tasty creamy dressing, a small scoop of mashed potatoes, a small bowl of rice and a small bowl of miso soup.Tasty, nicely prepared and cordially served.

It was good food. I had their lunch special and everything was great. The steak was medium rare as I requested,. The rice, miso, tempura and salad all tasted very good. Serving staff was friendly and attentive. What keeps me from giving them 5 stars is that nothing wowed me. I definitely will be going back to try their sushi. I kind of regret not ordering their sushi. I think they would have earned a 5 star if I would have ordered the right thing. I will be going back again and I highly recommend visiting and leaving a comment on your experience.

I visited this restaurant for the first time. The menu for sushi is limited compared to other sushi spots, and the spicy tuna roll was less than average. The sake was good and the tempura was good. They were clearly understaffed with waiters and waitresses. They told me to pay at the cashier when I was done, which was not well identified and then it was a slow process. Overall, I would give it an average rating.

Absolutely horrible service. We waited well over 30 minutes for our sushi order, yet many tables were empty. The server was anything but friendly. I never saw her smile once and she never even offered a hint of an apology when I asked her where our order was, while everyone else was getting their dinner. The sushi was not fresh and when it comes to sushi, fresh is THE factor. The yellow tail in particular was mushy. I even found a bone (you read that right) in my yellow tail roll. Dinner for 3 of us was $90. If youre going to charge that amount, youd better have decent quality fish. Dont even think of going to this place. If I could give negative stars, I would.

We enjoyed a lovely dinner for 4 tonight. The service was gracious and the food was delicious! This was our second experience dining there and we enjoyed it very much both times. Music was jazz piano but not loud. We had noodle soup with tempura along with yellow tail, eel sushi and hot saki. Definitely comfort food. I just wish it had been raining outside.

Dad and I used to like this place. Its been about 6 months since were were last here and it really changed. We both ordered the salmon combo. He had sashimi and I had tempura. His pleasure came with mackerel instead of salmon. When they took the plate back, he asked for no salad. They brought the soy sauce and tempura sauce 15 minutes after they took Dads plate back, by that time my tempera was cold. It took another 30 minutes before Dads plate arrived with salad! The waitress said, thats ok you take it, and she slid it onto my plate. My whole plate was cold and the tempura was soft and had an old oil taste. Very disappointing.

This a great place for japanese food not just sushi and rolls. The sukiyaki is amazing, grilled saba, chicken cutlet, agedashi... The fish they do have for nigiri and rolls is fresh and tasty but dont expect extravagant rolls. I havent had everything there but in my 15 years going there Ive never been disappointed

My family has been eating here for a very long time. The food is delicious, mostly because the quality of the ingredients is very high. This is the only place where I get beef teriyaki because the meat they use is excellent. Their miso soup is also the best I have ever had and I love their salad dressing (a decadent mayonnaise based dressing). When people visit us, this is where we take them.

Emi and Fumito are fixtures and always greet us with bowing heads and smiles.My parents loved their food and my children still visit. Lets put it this way I grew up in San Marino and would go to the Ai resturant often but tonight I went in to eat and the woman at the counter didnt acknowlege me or my father for 5 minutes. She was too busy writing up a bill for some table. I saw a waiter and said, Could we eat at that booth over there...he said he would have to clean it. We were ready to seat ourselves when he told us you need to ask the hostess to seat you. When I went back to the busy hostess she said nothing and still wouldnt give us the time of day. Finally I asked if I could have the booth she said how many, I said two and then she said how many again in a rude tone...yes two I said, and then told me to sit over there and wait. There were plenty of empty tables! So I told my dad we dont need this and we got up and left! Why should I pay good money to be abused. Save your money the owner and the food both SUCK! By the way they have a sign right on the hostesses stand that states WE REFUSE TO SERVE ANYONE Many resturants have this sign hidden but not Ai they have it promptly displayed...guess they hate serving people! SHAME on them!
