Great sushi at a fair price. Ordered the Kubo, Orange Blossom, Spicy Unagi, Tiger, and White Dragon. The Tiger was my favorite, a very well balanced roll with the perfect amount of spice. Photographed are the CA roll and Kubo, Tiger, and Orange Blossom rolls. I ordered lunch take out from Amakai. The food is really good, and not very expensive. I ordered beef teriyaki bento. The taste of the teriyaki sauce is little bit sweet. Beef is grilled just about the right time ( not too chewy and not too raw). The rice is Japanese rice, I like it! Gyoza is deep fried, so it’s crispy outside. Miso soup is as expected. I would come back again and try sashimi or roll on my next visit.

From the NYC-NJ area and this place is up there with probably one of the freshest sushi that Ive ever had. The only downside was that they were short staffed and had to wait a bit. There were signs all over the restaurant informing of the staff shortage and to expect longer than normal wait times. They handled what they could during the lunch hour rush. Pretty good sushi. Would come back here again when I come back to the area.

Very good sushi. Rivals my favorite, Omee J. The baked scallop sushi was good (not pictured) but probably a little small. The place, in general, was tiny and parking can be tricky but I’d recommend checking this spot out.

I was pretty impressed with their rolls, and theyre really reasonably priced for bay area. We went with a group of 8 so we ordered a whole bunch of rolls, as well as chicken udon and tonkotsu, and shared. I didnt try the tonkotsu but the udon was good, pretty standard. The rolls were beautiful, fresh, and nicely balanced - my favourites were Lady in Red and 007. Personally, I didnt like that the Green Dragon had pesto, that threw me off. Unfortunately, we were all so hungry I forgot to take pictures. They charge a gratuity of 20% for large groups (6+), but the total after everything came out to under $35 per person and we were fairly stuffed. I would definitely go back, might be my new favourite sushi spot 👀.

Not good unfortunately. I got a dragon roll, sunomono, and vegetable gyoza. The eel was good, but the imitation crab was horrible (dry and strange flavor, like it was old). The cucumbers in the sunomono were okay, but the salad wasnt nearly as flavorful and tangy as Ive had at others. The gyoza texture was bad: completely crispy and fried all around, not soft in some areas and crisp on one side. Overall I was quite disappointed, especially for the price (I pad $37 including tax and tip). I will probably just go to tried and true Yuki Sushi from now on.

Great selection of sushi and the rolls we had tasted good and the fish tasted pretty fresh. However, there were a few issues. We both had to spit our fish scales at one point, which Ive literally never had to do when eating sushi before. On top of that, we found a hair under one of the rolls (between the plate and the roll). Lastly, the service was incredibly slow! Despite them having 3 people making sushi (seemingly) it took over 15 minutes for a really simple one, and about half an hour for the more complex ones. Ordering and paying was also really really slow. Not sure why, maybe understaffed. The waitress just seemed constantly distracted. Ive had way better experiences and just as good sushi (if not better) at other places in the bay area, so no reason to come back.

An impressive number of rolls to choose from, including the house signature rolls. Taste, texture, craftsmanship-- all very good quality. For the non sushi enthusiast, there are quite a bit of alternatives. They were very accommodating and nice to explain things in the menu for my newbie companion. Looking forward to going back and trying more menu items!

Good sushi. Place is small but nice and cozy. Parking can be tough sometimes. I ordered the green dragon(pic included). The green was done with the green basil pesto sauce that you have on pasta or pizza. I didnt like it, sort of didnt go with the sushi taste buds. But everything else we ordered was great.

Edit: since continuing to go here again and again over these past two years, Amakai has become my go to comfort sushi spot. It hits a perfect mix of great food for a great price point. Theyve resolved all of their service issues and now are a well oiled machine. The food was a genuine treat for my taste buds. The salad was a perfect level of spicy and the unique sushi roll combinations were welcome. The service was not. I was the first one there when the doors opened and asked to be sat at a booth table. I was told that theyre reserved for larger parties. That makes sense, but not when your restaurant is completely empty. The only option was to sit at a 2 person table, despite my assurances that I would be in and out within twenty minutes. It may seem like a petty issue, but this kind of inflexibility mirrors other reviewer complaints about customer service so I had to call it out. Also no amex.

I’ve been to tons of sushi places all over the states and this one is a BIG NO NO! The food in general is over sautéed and the poke I ordered is super salty. Salty is not cooking! Everyone can make food salty!!! And the portion is tiny! I didn’t expect to have a lot but they didn’t even give you a decent portion! PLUS they have a lot of rule regarding automatic 20% gratuity and how many cards you can use. And this place is super small you can have everyone listen to you even you’re just whispering. No privacy at all. Overall, avoid this place for your own good.

Average sushi with mediocre apps.Nothing to write home about in this one except don’t get the edamame. It was so soggy I couldn’t get the beans out of the shell without getting too involved.The green tea wasn’t that great in the plastic cup so I didn’t finish it. Not worth it.The sushi roll was ok.Saving grace at this place would be the service. They are attentive to getting your order. Still have some distance to go, but service was good.The place got busy so others do enjoy it and there are other things they are doing right. I won’t visit again, but from the look of others, it’s worth a try.

First time dining here. I eat sushi at least twice a week and have dined in many countries around the world. Ordered the special sashimi available and was very good. Uni and king salmon especially very good from highest quality wholesalers. Sit at the sushi bar and talk to Steve and if you’re lucky enough to meet his wife Cynthia you’ll understand the value of dining at a family owned restaurant. Get to know them and it’s well worth the effort. This place is my new go to place when traveling to Sunnyvale area.

Great service, good sushi, and great sashimi can summarize this place up. Came here to grab a bite and there wasnt a wait which is a huge positive. We ordered some sushi rolls and some sashimi and I was surprised that the sashimi was super fresh and melted like butter in your mouth. The waitress was nice and served the food quickly so 5 stars on that. The place is also a bit small and located in a strip mall but that seems to be the case with all of the sushi restaurants in San Jose. I wasnt the biggest fan of some of their rolls because they didnt stand out in flavor to me but overall it was a good experience.

I sat at the Sushi Bar. My server was attentive and friendly. I ordered a Shrimp Tempura Role which was good. Nothing crazy exciting about it. I also ordered Gyoza which was ok. Ive had better. The Gyoza dipping sauce was very sour tasting and threw the flavor off so I asked for Tempura sauce which made it slightly better. Overall a good place for a quick lunch.

The food here is pretty good and I always enjoy it. What takes away from the experience is the service. When I was there for dinner, the servers had too many tables. It was almost impossible to get drinks refilled and / or ordered. (I had to ask for a beer 3 times before I got one.). Further, the food takes a long time to come out. Please don’t misunderstand, the staff is very friendly... they just don’t seemed prepared for a full dinner service.

Sushi was fine. However, I ordered the vegetable curry that came with miso soup and salad. The soup and salad were ordinarily good. But, and heres the kicker, they used box curry for the curry. You know, like the one you buy at any Japanese supermarket, heat up on the stove or microwave. I can even add the picture of the box and brand later. But I know it very well, its just potatoes, carrots and onions.TLDR: Dont order the curry. They charge you $10 for instant curry.
