I really enjoy having lunch here. The taste is unbelievable.
Old timers always tell me how great it was but it still is. Portions are large but also delicious. And the menu has every old school Japanese comfort food from udon to beef teriyaki to sashimi to grilled mackerel. The sashimi salad has plenty of salmon, tuna and octopus and the dressing isnt over powering. The cutlet has a great crunch and the chicken moist. The egg omelette has pieces of chicken in it so theyre not skimping. So no regrets.
Fantastic little Japanese spot! Perfect medium rare beef teriyaki, low cost house saki, great gyoza, big portions, I would come here a lot if I was local!
Awesome small shop. They close after lunch to prepare for dinner. Always crowded with 30 minute wait times. Eat early and often.
The sashimi is very fresh and tasty when dipped in ponzu with green onion. The beef teriyaki is delicious as well, if youre not a fan of teriyaki sauce you can substitute it for ponzu. Portions are very generous, the tempura is light and crispy. Ive never been disappointed by any of the dishes Ive tried here, overall a solid spot.
I love Azuma. My office recently moved to the area and I have taken many colleagues and clients here, everyone has loved it.Lunch is very reasonable. The combos are sooo much good food for the price.I was shocked and saddened today when I found they were closed. I do hope they return, and id they do, I will too!
There’s parking in the rear of the restaurant. Friendly and fast service. We were seated right away. The food is delicious and authentic. The portions are big.
Went on a Monday dinner in my craving for Japanese comfort food. For two people we ordered small sashimi, curry udon, and chicken cutlet meal. Sashimi was fresh and the cut of the tuna was very delicious. I always try out chicken cutlet to see how well a restaurant performs for any cutlet before I try out other variations and they did a fantastic job of making our dish delicious. I will definitely be back to try out other menu items.
Azuma is always great. Excellent food and very good service. Outdoor dining in the back is great because of COVID and they have heaters to keep you warm. My ultimate dish, teriyaki beef and chicken combo. Its not on the menu but theyll make it. The beef is more like steak. Good quality so I always get medium rare. Top it off with some Asahi beer and youre good to go. Try it, youll definitely like it.
Awesome little local place. My wife and I call it the big plate place because of the large plates of food they serve.Its not cheap, but it doesnt taste cheap either. Everything Ive had has been very high quality and prepared beautifully. I am a fan of their pork cutlet, sashimi, teriyaki beef, tempura and their fried assortment of foods. Add a cold beer to it and Im a happy person.This is a spot I regularly like to treat myself to and Ive never been disappointed. It is a small place, so it can get crowded. They are also open late.
Another Gardena GEM, staple, OG spot, cross section of wide swath of community members, near and far. Huge menu at night - I see the enormous portions passing by for folks who’ve ordered the combo plates. I always go for a bunch of small dishes to share at the table. Hint: if you like yaki onigiri, order as soon as you sit down before deciding on the rest of your order. It takes at least 20 minutes to make and may come towards the end of your meal if you don’t order early enough! All this to say, it’s completely worth the wait.
You can eat traditional Japanese dishes here. I’m from Japan, love their foods. Today I visited for lunch and ordered lunch special. It has tons of stuff and costs $9.50. So valuable.I love Azuma. No reservations taken, first come first serve.

Azuma is worth rush hour on the 405 on a Friday night. Excellent. My favorite menu item is their yaki onigiri! In particular the bonito and plum ones! They are life changing.
The place is small inside, but big on flavor!! Cant wait to go back!!
Great little restaurant with amazing food. Place gets packed and wait is long if you go during busy hours but the staff is friendly. Food has always been top notch but cleanliness is where the -1 star comes in. During my last three visits tables have always been sticky and dirty. It isn’t a deal breaker since I’m not eating off the tables but it would go a long way in comfort knowing I can rest my arms on the table and not pull them away with a sticky sensation.
AMAZING! Be prepared, their menu offers nearly as many options as the Cheesecake Factory- EXCEPT! The food is all phenomenal. The agedashi tofu and salmon skin salad are some of my favorite items, but I can guarantee anything you order will be a hit!
Food tastes great, big portions, great service.Very small place though. Not good for large groups. My sister wanted to eat there for her birthday and it was 9 of us, they accommodated us but it was a task.Other than that the food is fresh and delicious.I recommend the beef and chicken teriyaki plate.
Lots of good vegetables appetizers with good presentation here. But the restaurant is too small and can get too crowdy during peak time. Coming early there would help.
Checked this place out on a last minute whim with a friend. The menu has so many choices it can be overwhelming trying to pick a dish. Let it be known that if you want to order appetizers, the main entre plates are huge. I ordered the omelet and pork katsu and I surprised at the amount of food that arrived to the table. It was very good but Ill be eating this for the next 2 days. Will come again and be sure to have an empty stomach next time.
This is a Japanese restaurant that is a nostalgic go to every time I come back to Gardena. The food is consistently delicious.

This is a quaint, iconic restaurant in Gardena. Ive been coming here for years for traditional Japanese comfort food. For the price, you get an incredible amount of delicious food. The service is quick and attentive and the space is cozy. I highly recommend Azuma. (Be prepared to wait for a table during peak hours.)
Got the Terayaki Steak & Tepura, it was delicious. Customer service was great as well. Will definitely go back.

I came here for dinner as it was the closest place to my hotel. Wasnt disappointed in the food I ordered, and even though it was busy I was still attended to while I sat at the bar. Would come here again next time Im in the area.

When I a. Down the hill in the Gardena area and need Japanese food this is my go to place. The food and service are great. The atmosphere is not elegant at all, you will walk in and see mostly Japanese people gathered at small tables. Then further in a sushi bar and more small tables. It reminds me of some of the restaurants in Japan so thats why 5 stars for atmosphere. This a very authentic Japanese restaurant.
This place is fantastic highly recommended. Plenty of Japanese dishes to choose from. Any one will easily find something to eat. From something exotic such as the grilled octopus or squid. To something comforting like a teriyaki dinner. Azuma never disappoints. Great spot to grab small plates and some drinks. Their sake selection is superb. Highly recommend just picking out all the small plates that catch your eye. Great appetizer and beer special.
Extensive food menu with many delicious seafood (and other) options. Portions are huge, food was excellent! Ordered the sashimi salad, pork fried rice, agedashi tofu, braised pork belly, broiled black cod and mackerel, fried smelt - all fantastic.

This place is a Major Go! My first visit here with friends and the food was awesome! I ordered the beef teriyaki dinner and found it weird that the server asked how did I want the beef cooked. So I went with the bit and said medium and the beef was cooked to perfection! The place is small, but busy, so expect a wait. The portion sizes are large as well, so come hungry.
Food was really flavorful and the quantity was good. Quality food in a nice setting. If theyvrun out of a dish they respectfully let you know and I plan on making it one of my spots to enjoy good quality dishes. Hot tea was perfect.
Loved their Sashimi Salad. Very tasty, very fresh fish, no one else does octopus better..Will go there every time when returning from the LAX. !

It is always so busy and we all know why! They have good deals, good food, and fast service. It is definitely a hidden gem of Gardena.
Rarely am I unimpressed but maybe I got the wrong item? I ordered a low carb roll which flavor wise may have been good but three was literally a tiny sliver of salmon in it; I couldn’t believe I was even paying for it considering it was basically rice and seaweed. The ginger sauce it was served with was delicious but forgotten until I was already eating and served right as I noticed that the roll was a little dry, (on top of having no fish). The seaweed salad was delicious and the portion was huge, enough to take home the extra. My server was not very friendly but the manager made up for it. Probably won’t go back? Maybe.
Very small but very tasty, large portions make for great value. Got my favorite, black cod, still thinking about how good it was. They have incredible lunch specials, now i know why they are so busy. Lots of parking in the back.

Had some yummy Chicken Udon. The broth alone was super fantastic. It was a little whole in the wall that was very busy for Monday night. Wait time was minimal. We signed our names and we were called immediately. Order the soup and veggies were fresh. Chicken was tender and tasty and the broth was heaven especially on a cold chilly day like today. Service was quick and lady was very nice. I would go again. Had the best experience for my first time here.
This place is amazing! The service is quick and very friendly. The chefs are constantly grinding and moving. The quality of the sashimi and steak is crazy for the price point! No complaints at all. Will definitely be back.

Would definitely come back for more!Had 5 items:-Beef Tataki: Has at least 10 big slices!-Pork Belly Slices with Yuzu Sauce (a little similar to oyako dons topping)-Tofu Steak (with mushrooms): slightly too greasy but generous portion-Grilled Squid (legs are separate, but this is a big squid!)-Tempura Small: your typical 5-6 PCs with 2 shrimp. The batter doesnt seem as crispy as typical tempura I have in mind.
Always enjoy this place!I had the pork cutlet donburi and my honey had the tempura donburi. We also ordered a side of cabbage salad.The pork was tender and juicy. The rice was steaming hot. They also have sashimi, traditional entrees, curry and udon on their menu.Tempura Udon was delish, came with both vegetable tempura and two shrimp tempura.Sashimi + pork cutlet combo was great, came with cabbage salad and macaroni salad. Sashimi came with daikon, lemon slice, octopus, yellowtail, salmon and tuna (sounded like you could customize your sashimi if desired, e.g. only salmon, etc.). Lots of food between the two orders - we also had a side of rice and miso soup (wasnt sure if it came with the udon or combo, but was plenty for my mom and I).October 2020 - COVID-19 outdoor dining review. Dining available in the back parking lot under your typical white catering tent. Limited seating, but they had a good system at lunch. If you are waiting they would take your order as other tables were winding down, that way once you were seated your food was ready! Highly efficient. Staff wearing masks, gloves and cleaning between guests. Best for group of 4 or less.Take out also available - they have a window set up on the street side entrance for your pick up orders.

Had takeout of tempura dinner and miso black cod dinner. Generous portions -- 4 large shrimp tempura and 2 portions of black cod. Yummy! Plus points for daikon oroshi for tempura sauce. Also came with rice, miso soup, cabbage salad and macaroni salad. I called ahead and they gave a 20 minute estimate for pickup. Friendly staff.

This is my one of my favorite places to go late at night. I love the traditional Japanese dishes they serve. I havent tried everything on the menu yet, but this places hasnt let me down. I recommend the combo plates. Portions are large enough to share and prices are good.
My son took me to this place which is a hole-in-the-wall but has mouth-watering wow-tasting Japanese food. So I thought that the servings would be Japanese-sized (just right). But NO. They were HUGE American-sized servings. I made the mistake of ordering three things only to realize my folly when the food arrived. Boy, did I try to pack it in. I ended up taking home so much food lol. I loved the taste. And the place had lots of Japanese clients so it must be authentic! Im so glad my son brought me here!
Never ate here because the waiting list was so long. Got a massage next door with my girl and happened to be at the right time and place. Wow. The food here was excellent. We got sashimi salad, pork cutlet donburi, and yamakake. Big, generous portions.Peace@_^
I have been coming to this restaurant for over 30 years. Originally specializing and Japanese bar food, it has become a favorite for many people because with the consistency of wonderful restaurant items comet not all of which are commonly found in most Japanese restaurants. The crew cooking are from Peru as the original Owner was Ive Japanese Peruvian descent. He created this wonderful atmosphere and the cooks are still wonderful at all that they do. I actually brought her be Hancock and old time friend here many years ago and he also enjoyed the wonderful and barnman its an excellent food. It reminded us of being app are a wonderful hole in the wall in Japan! Parking is convenient in the back and it is certainly worth coming to visit and exploring the different appetizers as well as the standard fare and beyond!
All of the food our party ordered was awesome! Big plates of food and beautifully presented. Teriyaki steak was tender, sashimi had nice size and color. The miso soup was very tasty! We also ordered asparagus wrapped in steak with a very tasty sauce. Rice was perfectly cooked and mac salad real good too. They have a small parking lot in back that is shared with other small businesses, but it is not a problem in the later evening to find a spot. It is a very small place and gets crowded,but everyone is having a good time eating and you wont notice after a while! Huge selection of food. You wont be disappointed!
What a great place for dinner! The portions are huge, food is delicious - the smaller tables can barely contain the plates. We have had to start sharing the combination plates and it works out really well. One of the few places that has what the Hawaiians call butter fish or black cod (watch out for the bones) - very yummy! One of our favorite places for teriyaki chicken & beef. Also lots of other good stuff too numerous ro mention. Just go!

Very much a hole in the wall restaurant. Small location and probably not the best for large groups, mostly 1-3 people for space to sit, but only a handful of large tables or so. Make sure youre ready to wait if you have a good sized party. Besides the space, staff is very friendly and helpful and the food is amazing. The ramen, teriyaki, sashimi and so much more of the menu tastes so authentically Japanese and prices are a little high, but plates are large and for me, always worth every penny for the meal.
Comfort Japanese. Good prices on food and drinks. unpretentious place, well managed, well cooked, well served, serious food. If you happen to be in Gardena CA, and get caught late without dinner, this place is a great choice. Great food, warm ambiance and great drinks without hurting your wallet. This ones makes a good memory for your Gardena’s station.

I eat lunch here at least 1-2 times a week. They have a rotating lunch special menu for $10. The food is good, affordable, and fairly healthy...If you are hungry try the Chicken Katsu.
This little hole in the wall Japanese Restaurant is on my top 10 list of favorite places to get good eats. Everything from my go-to Beef Teriyaki and Tempura plate which after 20 years I still love. To the katsudon which is a great portion and priced Right. Everything on the menu is super delicious!

I got the sashimi salad and my mom got the salmon skin salad. Both salads were DRENCHED in sauce; there was probably about 1 cup of leftover dressing that soaked the lettuce and the fish. If I got the dressing on the side I would have given this a 4 star review, but because there was way too much dressing it was hard to enjoy the salad.
It’s pretty compact with barely enough space to get through the tables, so be ready to get intimate with other customers ;)I got chicken katsu don and it was drier and rather bland that what I’m used to. But I wouldn’t complain because it was so reasonably priced and huge, and the staff were super friendly.

Love Azumas! They have huge plates, seriously huge. Theres not a ton of seating, so if you go at peak dinner hours there might be a wait. After 9pm they have great happy hour. Cheap Japanese beer by the pitcher, great Japanese appetizers like edamame. One of the best Japanese restaurants in the area for a great price and you get giant portions!

Great place for ordering many small dishes. Very authentic coming from someone who spent many years in a Japanese family. Recommendations: miso cod, beef teriyaki, sweet and sour omelette, beef and eggplant, and braised beef.
Great food,fast and big plates
A couple years have passed since I was last here. I have fond memories of the salmon skin salad and the biggest tonkatsu I had ever seen. The draft beer is still cold; the space between tables is minimal; the 3 guys in the open kitchen are a well oiled machine. The waitresses write orders in Japanese and cooks can read the orders but they are not Japanese.Whats changed? Theres a digital waiting list. The menus have higher prices. The tonkatsu is smaller. However, the flavors are the same. The salted mackerel is appropriately oily. The tonkatsu is juicy. I swear to not let so much time pass before I return.
Authentic old school Izakaya. So glad I finally stopped in at Azuma for a late meal. Big portions, great service and prices, and delicious food. Scored a seat at the counter so I could watch the cooks in action and see the huge tasty looking plates coming out.The menu is huge and if you love Japanese food then youre in for a treat because they do it all. Noodles, curry, sashimi, yakitori, okinomiyaki, kara age, chicken katsu. The menu is huge. They have an excellent late night happy hour menu from 9pm to 11pm and everything I ordered was delicious. This is now my go to spot after going out for drinks with friends.

Best Steaky-yaki in the South Bay! Its the regular old beef teriyaki plate, but instead they use rib-eye steaks! Thus...the name Steaky-yaki! I choose to forgo the teriyaki sauce (although it is also one of the better ones in the south bay as well! Not too sweet.) for ponzu sauce for dipping. It bolsters the steak flavor a lot more than the teriyaki sauce.Very generous portions too, so you wont be disappointed!
The food is great. The servers are polite and the prices are modest. What more could you ask for. The perfect place when having a late night meal after a movie or a show.

Nice Japanese restaurant. Good service and tasty food. Chicken katsu and sushi had a large portion and was filling. Had to bring some home with a box. Salad, macaroni and miso soup were good.
Happy that this place exists. Lunch sets and overall atmosphere make you feel like you could be somewhere in Jingu-mae, B1 level, waiting in line on the stairs to get a table with your co-workers. Except that there is no cigarette smoke during your meal, and when you walk outside its blue skies and SoCal sun instead of the cold, humid October days in Tokyo.

Was taken here by a friend while visiting LA on business. You basically have to be taken here because theres no way you would find it on your own.The food is simply fabulous -authentic, fresh ingredients, properly cooked, delicious. There were five of us and we ordered about 15 dishes to try. None disappointed. The hamachi kana (sp?) or yellowtail jowl, excellent. So is the black cod. The kimchee rice is a pleasant and tasty surprise, coming from a Japanese kitchen.There is parking behind the restaurant. Youll think you are in the wrong lot, but the small for to the left of the barbershop is the correct one. Consider yourself taken there. :-)

Theres is a lot of choices here. It offers sushi, yakitori, ramen, cutlet, pretty much everything thats typical for Japanese food. Last time I came, the cutlet was a little dry but portions was pretty decent though.
Down home narrow shot gun Izakaya with bar style seating on one side & narrow table seating on the other. Larger tables in back. However, this is definitely not a place for large group dining.The waiters at Azuma are Japanese speakers while most of the cooking staff are Latinos except the head chef who appears to be Japanese. They are an amiable bunch, and its interesting to see how they react & interact due to their differing cultural upbringing. LA is a great place to see how this intercultural give & take is happening not just between two cultures, but multi-cultures numbering in the hundreds.We lucked out in that Azuma has late night Happy Hour so there are reduced prices for Sapporo Draft beer in glass for pitcher; Sake (sah keh) flavoured with Yuzu, a Japanese citrus, Katana, Karatamba Sakes; Sho-chu- which is Japanese lower alcohol Vodka with such brands as Yokaichi, Shiranami; and sweet Plum wine. There is a Happy Hour limited menu for food, but I didnt order from the list.1) Wakasagi is fresh water smelt that is breaded with Panko (pawn koh) & fried. Usually Wakasagi has a light fresh taste, but his version was a bit fishy & a bit over fried.2) Mu-rugai Ninniku is green mussels with garlic & butter with Panko bread crumbs as a filling. Again the mussels were over baked leading to extreme dryness.1-2a) The Nihon Katana Sakè (sah keh) was a good mating for the above cutting through the oil and palate cleanser to some of the fishiness. Katana is dry, hints of Sugi or Japanese cedar, clean finish with a hint of sweetness.The prices were certainly reasonable for these small dishes and the quantity was large, but I just didnt get the impression of really finely tuned cooking. Perhaps I didnt order the restaurants high points. For now, it borders on 4- stars.
Beer and fine Japanese grinds. Azuma is great place to relax and enjoy comforting Japanese food with friends. The selection is pretty good with dishes large and small. Normally there is parking in the back.
Our Family enjoyed Lunch at Azuma Japanese Restaurant at 16123 Western Avenue Gardena, CA 90247. It is just the same size Restaurant as in Japan. We were quickly seated and the price was just right.

Azuma is a great go-to for dinner and late night Japanese soul food. For anyone missing a hole-in-the-wall food place from the small side streets of Tokyo, this will be sure to scratch the itch.The quality is not top notch, but the variety and portions are sure to please. Plenty of favorites.
If you want to eat an authentic Japanese food that costs for average people. this is it. the place is considered as Dinner Shokudoin Japanese. As a Japanese, this restaurant reminds me of Tokyos Shokudo in Oota-ku. Only the difference is the quantity, You get twice as much food as Tokyos restaurant. I would strongly recommend this an Old-fashioned Japanese dinner.
Okonomiyaki was great ! Larger American portions but still very authentic Japanese . Yakisoba tased more like lo mien which was disappointing but the okonomiyaki was worth it .

Ive always wanted to try okonomiyaki, this place definitely did not disappoint. It was cozy, and the service was very friendly and the food was delicious. The curry udon was also pretty fantastic.

Too crowded inside to feel comfortable. Food was also a bit overpriced compared to what it used to be. Not sure if its worth a 40 minute wait.
Get the beef teriyaki and sashimi combo. It wont disappoint. Also the deep fried veggie roll thingy (forgot the name) is so good too.

2023-04-09 20:28:13Friday night dinner and it was busy. It’s a very small dining area.We ordered badly.We should have just ordered the teriyaki plate and shared it. Things we ordered were not as we expected them to be.Eggplant were small and tasted different and had flakes of seafood on top. Did not taste good. The tofu in a soupy broth was better but mushy. The mushrooms were stiff and almost tasted burnt. The dumplings were a bit bland but the chicken teriyaki plate was excellent and I would come back and just order that next time. Good value and great flavors and selection of everything. Enough to probably share between two people.Overall it was expensive for what we got.

I loveddd the steak, as it had just the right amount of teriyaki sauce on it. The miso soup was also great. I’ve had some bad miso soup before and this definitely wasn’t it. I will definitely be hitting this spot again on my way back to California

2023-10-23 04:33:33Update: They are open again as of October 2023!--Even though you see a door on the main street, they primarily use the back entrance.The back also has a parking lot.The food itself is really well made, I havent had one bad item from their menu yet.Quick service, yet you dont feel rushed while you are dining there.

2022-05-15 19:22:30A true gem, never thought such an amazing restaurant was located here. The food is amazing portions are generous and prices are fair and affordable. Every dish feels homemade and it’s absolutely delicious. Lunch has a scheduled special each day and very affordable. The curry as well as the rice bowls are amazing. We also tried the curry udon and the grilled fish and everything was absolutely delicious. They also have tables for larger parties and service is very fast and friendly. A must try, you will love it

2023-01-08 06:59:27Wife and I went on a Saturday evening and the restaurant was packed. We got seated pretty fast the wait was about 10 minutes. After ordering, the wait for the food was about 5 minutes and the food tasted as delicious as it looked. I made the mistake of eating a spoonful of Wasabi when I wondered what was on the edge of my wifes pork cutlet plate. My omelet was pretty plain but the fried rice it was on top of made up for it. The croquettes were pretty big and delicious too; crunchy outside and fluffy inside. I learned about this place from YouTube when I saw their onigiri so I ordered 4 of them to go, 2 plain and 2 grilled with salmon. Big, delicious, and the perfect snack. Look forward to going again.

2023-10-14 19:22:27Dont know what you got, until its gone.... So happy they re-opened 10/4/23. Have been back twice since they re-opened and the food is even better. The prices went up a little bit but its still worth it and excellent! I regularly order the Beef Teriyaki combo and the black cod. Simply, the best out there, highly Recommended!

A very large selection and variety of meals to choose from including small or larger plates depending on sharing preferences. Food came out quickly and tasted very fresh. Got the Okonamiyaki, salmon skin salad and sauteed beef. All solid and delicious.
