Add me to the list of people who dont get why this place is rated so high. I think its because the local eateries in LC get some special treatment by the locals. If youve had sandwiches outside of LC you can probably skip this one.I went to this place about 30 minutes before closing one day and the man behind the counter was noticeably annoyed that I had crossed his threshold. That attitude pervaded throughout my visit, and I was taking a to-go order.My turkey sandwich was nothing special. Id say it was even a little minus. Bread, turkey, sparse on everything else and missing things that I thought were supposed to be there, like tomato.The turkey meat had good flavor.I like supporting local businesses so I hope they turn this around.

Great family owned sandwich shop thats been a staple in La Canada for decades. John and his mother are very friendly, and the food is high quality! My go-to is the Turkey Avocado, but if Im feeling frisky Ill get the Club. Obviously dont forget their awesome tomato basil soup. They never disappoint :)

Classic sandwich and soup options here... great staff.. I got a tuna melt.. it was small, flat, and a little sad... needed some chips or maybe some soup to be satisfied... maybe next time, maybe not.. I did appreciate the pickles
This is my second time coming here. The people are so sweet. Youve got to have their tomato soup its absolutely delicious! Sometimes it appears that they are not busy inside the shop. However as I sat there I noticed the amount of people who came and picked up some food to go. Dont be discouraged if theres nobody else there. The food is really good. They even gave a samples of the tomato soup to test before we purchased. We ended up buying more to take home and have later. They added bread to our to-go bag.
Recently featured in eaterLA and I decided to try this. Get the bread option with the bisque. The ruben and the club are worthy even for the taste and the price. Friendly staff. Non fountain drinks with plenty of options.

I love everything about it! The family that owns it, the prices, The Armenian bread, and the pickles! The artichoke is special as is the roast beef avocado and the ham with cream cheese and chopped olives. But those darn pickles are worth the drive to La Canada.
I gotta tell you after years of driving past Berge’d Sandwiches I finally stopped in. It was the best thing I did all day and I left with a smile on my face and a happy tummy.First of all the customer service was the best I’ve had in years. The owner talked to me and shared a little bit about the restaurant and it’s history. He’s a super nice guy who is passionate about making sandwiches and about the people who eat them. All his food is super high quality because he wants his customers to have the best quality. Pretty incredible.The food was amazing. It’s definitely a locals favorite. I had a Reuben and my son had the pastrami. Both were amazing, delicious and ever so tasty. This is my new go to sandwich shop. Forget the chain sandwich places go to Berge’s! You won’t regret it!
Berges is a master sandwich maker! I had their half Italian sandwich for $6.99. It was wonderful and filling! Ham, salami, mortedella and cheese and fixings on a unique bread. Want to come back and try them all. Owner is very friendly!
Im not sure there was Muenster on my Reuben, but it was still good.

After a day at Descanso Gardens, we Google a place to eat. Google did not disappoint and neither did Berges Sandwich Shop.My family and I enjoyed our sandwiches, BLTA, White Tuna, Turkey and Avocado and a Corned beef. Also enjoyed the Potato salad and tomatoe bisque were flavorful. The people at the counter were friendly and welcoming.
Fresh food, awesome service, great taste and a tomato soup to die for. (which I normally hate) I saw a couple reviews saying they didn’t like it, now I only assume they fried their taste buds on fast food and junk or something to that factor. Me, myself will be returning for more, the rest of the reviews don’t lie this place is solid. Happy it’s still open given the climate of things these days.
This place is BOMB. Honestly one of the best sandwich places you can go to. Their tuna melt is 👌👌👌👌. Very friendly customer service, the older gentlemen is quite the character and will help you feel at home in this cozy little restraunt. They have a lot of options and Ive probably tried 3/4 of their sandwiches. They are all worth trying. Definitely give this place a go!
I have been going here for years. This is the best place to get any type of sandwich or soup. Most food joints on Foothill have okay food but this food is absolutely amazing and makes my mouth water with saliva. You should go and I promise you will get the same exact feeling. The people of La Canada will have a sybaritic taste bud perfection. Thank You. Enjoy your lunch at Berges.
A good sandwich, but slightly pricy. I had the submarine, which was a good and satisfying meal, for $7.99 (just the sandwich, nothing else). A pleasant atmosphere, and friendly staff are a bonus.
I have not been to Berges since the Sierra Madre store closed. In fact I was unaware of the La Canada store till recently. The food was always great and I hope to see Queenie, John and Marianne, tomorrow. Great folks to work for too!!

First time here. Was annoyed when a customer came into the uncrowded place and stepped in front of me at the order window and began speaking to the person who was making sandwiches. I had to speak up and request to be next even though I had clearly been standing behind a customer who was already paying for her order.Then the older woman (perhaps the owner) who was ringing up orders had an attitude when she realized that I planned to eat there instead of taking the sandwich to go because she had already placed the sandwich in a bag.It seems like a friendly enough place, and I would like to believe that my experience is not typical. I might come back. But because of this experience, I give 3 stars.
Baffled how this has high rating. Very friendly, eager to please but doesnt make the grade with their sandwiches. Swiss cheese is, as they told me, pasteurized and doesnt taste like Swiss. BBQ roast beef was minimal meat and not simmered or cooked in BBQ sauce but added afterwards.
Got 3 large sandwiches and a salt and vinegar chips. Turkey avocado, the roast beef w cream cheese and olives, and the Italian cold cut. The first and last were the best.They were more than enough for 3 people. They came with pickles. The worker was friendly and explained what was popular bc it was my first time visiting.My brother said smaller sandwiches there with toasted sliced bread and melted cheese were great options.
Good sandwich shop. The matriarch will give you the stink eye from her reserved table, but the two guys doing the work are very friendly. A much better, less expensive alternative to Jersey Mikes down the street.
Ive been going to Berges for over 30 years. I remember when Berge was behind the cash register. Now the tradition is carried on by the family & the food is as good today as it always has been. A good sandwich, chips & drink make a five meal too. Add soup if thats to your liking. One of my favorite spots for lunch or dinner!
Good food at decent prices. Soups here are amazing. I dont usually like lentil or pea soup but will eat them here. Clam chowder on Fridays best I had around town.

Horrible sandwiches. Bread was stale on Italian sub. Asked for swiss cheese. Certainly didnt look or taste like swiss cheese. Pickles were an odd color and mushy.BBQ roast beef sandwich also horrible. Very little BBQ sauce and the color of the sauce was a nasty dark brown, unlike any BBQ sauce I have ever seen. Total waste of my money and I will never go to Berges again!! Lady at register also extremely rude. Just a really aweful experience. Totally disgusting and pathetic and pretty much inedible!!

The standard for more than forty years...Get a RB, turkey, or ham sandwich, with pickles (ask for extra pickles nicely and you might get lucky). Dont get fancy.

2023-07-15 19:49:16For 50 years Berges has ranked as a favorite dining spot. We loved the staff who asked carefully how we wanted our sandwiches customized to our taste. The fresh-baked bread and homemade ingredients result in perfect sandwiches. Queeny Yeghiaian, the wife of Berge who created the shop 50 years ago but sadly has passed, was sititng in the dining area watching to make sure every customer was satisfied. We talked to her after our meal to let her know it was just as good as the Google Reviews had promised.

2023-07-03 23:52:31Stopped here after the botanical garden last week and havent stopping craving it since. I got the turkey avocado sandwich and it was so fresh and was the perfect, filling, healthy sandwich. The tomato bisque is also amazing. If I lived closer I would eat here on the regular.
