Been coming here for quite a few years and it’s consistently been the BEST sushi in Carlsbad, IMO. The quality and freshness of the fish is exceptional, the staff and atmosphere is excellent. On a busy night, it’s loud and packed, due to reasons above. 😝 My favorite dish, the screaming yellowtail. Absolutely decadent and punches you in the face with flavor.

My husband took me for my birthday dinner, it was the best sushi I have ever had in my life!!! And when we got the bill I was even more shocked! I could not believe we had just gotten as much as we did with the QUALITY that it was for the price that we paid...... great food wonderful staff and UNBEATABLE prices, even brought be a macaroon with a candle for my birth day ❤ will be back again when we visit san diago!!!

It was not perfect. But that was because of how popular, and thus, busy it was. But the staff always smiled through the rush. Always diligent through my whole experience. After i asked for a sitting for one, I ended up stuffed at the corner of the bar, encroached by the bar straws and skewers. Not great, not perfect, but their attention was perfect, and so was their service.The hot stone yukiniku was pretty good, though the meat wasnt great. Lots of gristle. But well presented, and with good sauces. The yakiniku sauce should benefit from a little more mirin. I dont know if Id recommend it, besides for show.The sashimi were the largest cut Ive had in my life! Be sure to ask for it thinly sliced. Same amount too.Great selection of sake. Im picky.All in all, Id definitely frequent this place. The crowed is a crowed, and its not a great place for a singles dinner. They also arent in open table. But they must pay their staff well for them to be so amazing, or they need to start to.

The food was beyond delicious. My favorite was the chef specialty tempura roll. We sat at the sushi bar and the chef was very accommodating he made us a special roll that was absolutely wonderful. He even suggested a few things from the menu that were also very good. I would say that sitting at the bar our server only checked on us once. She didn’t top off our water or even come around to see if we needed anything else. However the food was so good I won’t let the poor attentiveness from our server affect the rating. It was a busy Saturday night and we hardly waited for food and didn’t wait to get seated. Over all I would certainly come back again and recommend to friends and family.

All I can say is Wow!!! Such a tremendous experience visiting this restaurant. Its a bit pricey but you get a lot for what you order.Its a very comfortable environment with friendly people. The food, oh my goodness... it was truly amazing and I say this as a culinary artist. I ordered the deluxe sushi and I couldnt believe what I received -- just excellent.I was excited to know that they have a japanese beer there which was very difficult for me to find in many other restaurants/stores.Great job to the wait staff. They were very responsive and took great care of me.

Our favorite sushi place in Carlsbad. My wife went out of her box and had the albacore delight and loved it, its now her go to. I usually get the marine boy, but got the Mexican roll last time and would get it again. Really nice vibe, we usually sit at the bar.

Fantastic experience on all fronts. Didnt have to wait too long for a table; we sat in the partially enclosed outdoor patio, which was very pleasant. Our party really enjoyed our drinks, from beer to sake to cocktails, and our appetizers, sushi, and entrees were excellent. I dont think that you could go wrong with anything on the menu here. Our server, Jay, was extremely friendly and attentive. Desserts were out of this world and very cool. Prices were very reasonable...you can pay a lot more for a lot less at other places. Cant wait to go back! Definitely a favorite among Carlsbad restaurants.

Great first time dining experience. The atmosphere is warm n quaint, especially the covered patio dining with heaters.The menu choices are great. The sushi rolls presentation was as tasty as the actual sushi flavors. The kitchen menu with beef slices on hot plate at the table was both tasty and entertaining. The garlic edamame and gyoza were both tasty appetizers.It was impressive to see not only a Sake and wine list but also a whiskey list on the menu.The service was very professional n friendly. Emily was a great server who answered all our questions with patience and a smile. She was on top of it and made our dining experience a plus.We will definitely return to Blue Ocean for more pleasant dinners and I will recommend this place to others.

I liked that it wasnt loud when the restaurant was almost full. The sushi was delicious! We sat at the sushi bar and had great service. Our dirty dishes were picked up as soon as we set them to the side. The sushi chef was coughing into his mask a few times, which was gross.

Interesting place tucked a little out of the Carlsbad village strip. There was a decent selection of rolls to choose from and seemed to be quite empty for a Sunday. Came here on a recommendation from a friend. We had about three different waiters help us, not sure why, but maybe that’s why we didn’t get all of our items we ordered. Regardless the experience was ok, the place is super clean and roomy.

Ive frequented this place often, and Id gladly rate it 5 stars, were it not for the hostess, Meagan. On my last two visits, the first time she asked for my name without taking notes (possibly due to my accent, which I didnt mind), and on the second visit, she mentioned there were people ahead of us. I requested to sit at the bar, but she insisted we wait. However, I noticed she allowed another couple, who had just arrived, to check the bar for availability. When I inquired, she explained that they were only going to have drinks, but she never asked us if we planned to eat or drink. I felt offended and mistreated by Meagan, and I wonder if my accent is the reason for her behavior. Despite this, I still love this restaurant, but this recent experience was quite different from my previous visits.

The restaurant itself has more of a luxurious look, and their service and food compliments that neater dine in experience. Our waiter was very friendly and even cracked some humour with us. The food was I cant lie delicious and felt more filling than typical Japanese food, but was also a bit more on the pricier end. If you ever decide to dine here, I recommend the Playboy Roll, I believe has cream cheese, imitation crab, sake sashimi complimented with chipotle sauce on top, I would definitely eat here again if I ever found my self in the area.

We stopped by here in a Tuesday around 7:15 pm and were seated immediately outdoors. They dont take reservations. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. We had the kaboconut soup, spicy sashimi salad, wagyu meatballs, and omakase box. Overall, we were very underwhelmed with all of the food. The kaboconut soup tasted like squash soup with a bit of spice. The spicy sashimi salad was incredibly over dressed and the sashimi looked like it was the left over cuts of fish. The omakase box had a nice presentation but the sashimi was just OK. The best thing we ate were the wagyu meatballs. They were served warm with 2 sauces and tasted good. The restaurant has nicely decorated, the staff was very friendly, and the service was nice. However, I would not recommend coming here if you are looking for a more traditional sushi spot that really focuses on nigiri and sashimi. This place feels like an Asian restaurant that happens to serve sushi. There is a small parking lot next to the restaurant which I imagine fills up quickly during busier days/time.

The ambiance is beautiful, the location is great, close to the beach. The desserts are VERY good (+1 for having gluten free, vegan or vegetarian outlined on the menu). The sushi, however, was mediocre. Not tightly rolled so would fall apart very easily, and it tasted a bit off. It also took us flagging down waitstaff (who apologized that no one had come to help us) to take our order after 30 minutes after being seated, and an additional 45 to bring the food to the table despite not being a time during the lunch or dinner rush. I do recommend their desserts or if you like a relatively upscale restaurant, but its not very authentic sushi with a price and you may be here waiting around for an hour or two.

Awesome meal. The Hotty Hotty roll was very large and exceptional. These guys and gals can sling some serious fish and flavor. Service was good though it took awhile to get the check. Nice atmosphere. I enjoyed watching the chefs roll out beautiful sushi while the smell of roasting hibachi and charcoal completed the experience.

I recently made the mistake of ordering takeout from Blue Ocean Robata & Sushi Bar, and it was a complete disaster. From the moment I tried to picked up my order, it was clear that this restaurant had no regard for customer satisfaction.Firstly, we ordered directly from their website and got a confirmation email and texts on the order and prepayment via CC and when to pick up food. I was surprised how long the initial time to pick up was (just under an hour) given it was quite early (5pm), then when I went to pick up the order is when it all went south! As I was pulling in I received another text saying the order would be available for pick up yet another 15 minutes later - so we are now at 1 hour 15 minutes for a small order at a sushi restaurant?So I then went in to see if I could get some status on the order. At first they were confused on whether if it was a Doordash order or a pickup and finally said it was in the process of being packaged up, so I waited outside for a while. A Doordash driver showed up and then they motioned me in to see if that was my order, it was not. At that point I was very specious about what was going on with my order and started to ask a lot of questions, they put me off and said they would check on it. The manager proceeded to help several other customers and ignored me. After that he started to search for the order and said they had no record of it. I showed them the texts I had received that even had a link to display the order from their website, but he still insisted they had no record of it and then started to place the blame on me that I did something wrong while ordering? Saying that all the orders go to Door-dash (trying to blame them) and then saying maybe I ordered from a different location (I showed him the correct address from the text & link I had). I asked for a refund immediately, he refused saying he couldnt and offered to make the order and have me wait another 45 minutes, REALLY? At this point my dinner and evening were ruined, but the manager showed absolutely no empathy, caring or any remorse.Lastly, the customer service was non-existent. When I called to express my dissatisfaction with the order, I was met with indifference and a complete lack of empathy, they called me non-compliant - I didnt know a customer was to be Compliant!. It was clear that they had no interest in rectifying the situation or making things right for their customers. It was a clear display of their disregard for customer satisfaction.In conclusion, I strongly advise against ordering takeout from Blue Ocean Robata & Sushi Bar. The lack of customer service make it a complete waste of time and money. Save yourself the disappointment and find a different restaurant that actually values their customers and takes pride in the quality of their food.

Ordered the deluxe sashimi and about half of the platter did not taste fresh. I eat a lot of sashimi so I know when it tastes fresh. My friends ordered a few different rolls and they were ok but nothing particularly memorable.Server was great! Atmosphere was ok—super loud.Not sure why this place has such high reviews given the quality of the fish and food. Maybe the robata is better? Will not be returning, though, given my disappointment.

Went there for lunch, was really excited to try it . I got the dynamite roll and it wasnt bad. My mom had got the lunch combo with the teriyaki steak and California roll and her steak was a little more pink then she liked it but she still ate it. Up till now the service was fine. I then decided to order a lunch combo with the teriyaki steak and veggie tempura. After seeing my moms steak I asked if it could be cooked more so only little to no pink, more on the well done. It freaks me out when there is too much pink/no cooked. He comes back a few minutes with my food and said they couldnt cook it more and that it was too late. Even after saying that I couldnt eat it with the way it was cooked they still refused to do anything about it. All they had to do was cook it a little more. What kind of service tells you they cant cook it longer because the customer doesnt want barely cooked meat?? My food was cooked like they were in a rush, the place was empty only us and another couple were in there. All the veggies in my tempura were still hard in the center. Honestly no one seemed to care that I wasnt satisfied with my food. I would have ate it if it was slightly pink but this was too much, even compared to my mom who got her before me it was way more undercooked. She had pieces that were cooked well done but unlike mine not one piece was cooked enough for me to eat. This was honestly super disappointing and horrible customer service. Definitely wont be suggesting this place to anyone we know. I have NEVER been somewhere where they refused to take back the meat to cook it more.

Came on a Sunday with no reservations. Was told the wait was 15 minutes. We waited closer to an hour as we saw some people who came after us and put their names below our names on the sign in list get seated before us. We finally were brought to our table where there was a chair missing as well as the hand sanitizer all the other tables had. Our seat was surrounded by crickets and we asked to move in which they gave us a new table.The looked at the menu and noticed that the sashimi price was lesser than the nigiri price. Strange but that would be so cool! When we went to order we were told the price mix up on the menu. Usually when there is a pricing mistake the restaurant must honor the price that is listed. They did not.We asked where the Uni was from and they told us Japan. Well, if that Uni was from Japan, it must have died a month ago because it was rancid. Whoever was the chef that night must have been cutting the sushi with a pair of garden scissors because they were all varying sizes. What was most disappointing was that the toro tasted so bad. Nothing was fresh.I guess this is what I get for coming on a Sunday. We were told to come back on a Thursday when the executive chef was there. So you mean to tell me I shouldn’t come to your establishment on any other day because it will be terrible?I really wanted to like this place because my friends have had such a good experience at the La Jolla location. The Carlsbad location just seemed like the forgotten child left to fend for themselves. Never coming back.

There’s never a line for bad food!! Blue Ocean is in my top 3 favorite restaurants in Carlsbad. They have delicious vegetarian options and a fun atmosphere. We have been here before in March and it was a great and fun experience dining outside. This time it was the exact opposite. Wife and I walk in, place is not busy, greeted by Mikayla blonde white hostess, tells us 30 min wait. Takes my name and number says she will call when ready. We walk to grab coffee. We return after about 30 minutes and there is a line of couples. They are all seated. I go in and ask what is the issue and why have we not been seated or called. Mikayla has a bit of an attitude and says I am next. She then grabs her things and leaves the restaurant. I ask Jay why she is in a bad mood and why am I on the receiving end. Jay immediately seats us. We are served water and greeted by Michelle. She provided ok service, but was slow and not very attentive after taking our order, which took around 20 minutes after a 45 minute wait. My wife visited the ladies room, it was in complete disarray. While dining my wife takes notice of a food handler/preparer middle aged hispanic woman eating while preparing food. If she had washed her hands every single time she had put food into her mouth, she would have spent more time washing her hands than working. By this time we are ready to leave and decide to just pay and go. Far cry from the dining experience we had hoped to receive upon returning. So, we will not be returning.

Lets start off by giving the sushi chef, Hu major credit for how attentive and quick he was! The place looks super modern and well maintained. We got seated very quickly, at the sushi bar. Our server (who I think was a manager) said it was an awkward time period because the staff is transitioning shifts (understandable). We ordered drinks, potstickers & calamari 2x (which the first time around the calamari quantity was terrible and it didn’t taste as fresh as our potstickers we ordered but we ended up ordering a second round because we love calamari so much and surprisingly it tasted a lot different and was fresh and warm- this should have been a red flag for the night.) It took awhile to get our sushi rolls but that is understandable but while waiting no one came by to ask if we wanted another drink. The place started to become more busy and we ended up being stuck in between 2 families and their children who literally dressed like they came from the beach. The waiters were noticeably more attentive to these couples than us and were asking if they wanted another drink. I was deeply offended as you could tell my boyfriend and I were well dressed and out on a date night. We weren’t even carded when we ordered are drinks which should tell you we look old enough to afford to tip and dine here. Once our food came, no one came up to check on us or ask us how our food was. Again, no one asked us for another drink.I truly felt judged by my appearance and age of what kind of service I should be getting. I don’t think I’ll be coming back here again for service that makes their guests not feel equally important.Closer to 6 the restaurant started

Ive been going to Blue Ocean Carlsbad since it opened with my family. Yesterday, I decided to introduce my girlfriend to Blue Ocean because we were craving sushi but the service was inadequate to say the least. It felt like we were rushed to take our order and the apathy we received from the waitress was surprising to me. We are both gluten free and dairy free individuals due to our allergies and our server Yuza gave my girlfriend the wrong roll, which had cream cheese and wheat in it. My girlfriend ordered off the Plant Based menu for the Fried Soy Protein roll and we later found out it was the Crunch Vegetable roll. But instead of trying to give the right roll or apologizing, she comped only the roll itself off of the bill, which didnt feel like an act of consolidation, but more of one of obligation. My girlfriend was hungry and in pain afterwards, and I was pretty upset. We also had a significant wait time to receive our check afterwards when I just wanted to take my girlfriend to CVS to get some medications to reverse the allergy. Sadly, I will be saying goodbye to Blue Ocean due to this experience.

I called in advance to enquire about the restaurant as I am out of the area and wanted to take my daughter in law there for her birthday. Helena answered the call. She was both professional and friendly. Also, very caring and helpful. She was my first impression of this location and it was a good one. Upon arriving, the restaurant was clean and inviting. It had a very nice atmosphere. Everyone there is busy working, very friendly and professional. Our server, Bryce, was outstanding and represented Blue Ocean well. The Chefs are good at their craft as they sent out quality delicious food with perfect presentation of each dish. Everyone there made it a memorable day for us. They may cancel order but it had to be earlier than the dinner time especially on a Sunday night. Poor customer services. I also had a lunch there a week ago. The service was no good and they were super slow. We had to wait for over 20 mins to get a bill to pay after we were done eating. I will never go there again.

This Menu is too good. The most difficult part is choosing which way you are going to go. Small plates, large plates, Robata grill... They are all so good. But this is also some of the best sushi Ive ever had! For those looking for a good date night during COVID, this is so far the BEST place Ive gone to. They have done a really nice job creating ambiance and atmosphere outside.

All the fish and ingredients were fresh. The price is a fair penny compared to other sushi places, but you pay for quality and your dollar goes far here. If anyone has the time and doesnt mind paying ~20$ a plate Id recommend this place. The service was also amazing, plus I had no wait for my group if 4.

Nice place, but quite over priced... We ordered a few cut rolls, and they all were falling apart, making it extremely difficult to eat. Eel had so many bones, and the ginger didnt seem too fresh. The staff was really nice and helpful, absolutely loved our waiter!

The bar area is great for large parties with a great drink menu, and awesome appetizers. By far one of the best sushi restaurants in Carlsbad. Great location for walking in the village also! This place had terrible service. It took a while for the waiter to take our order and drinks. The staff would not pay attention to us in getting us our refills. The actual food was amazing many props to the chefs as it is the only redeeming quality of this place. After the meal was done it took them about 20 mins to ask if we wanted our checks and another 10 before we had to walk up to have them take our card. Other parties were seated after us, got their food and checks before we did. The server seemed to avoid us. I have never been disrespected so much as I was here.

Some of the item on the menu are over priced, but most of the food are really good. I asked for 2 orders of Calamares (battered squid), it arrived 8minutes apart and was cooked differently, you see the and taste difference. We got the Padres and Rainbow Rolls, they were good. Not a bad place, but not my first choice either. Good for hanging out.

We went to this restaurant twice last weekend because it was especially good. Much better vegan experience then a vegan sushi restaurant on Convoy. Both are dining experiences here were delicious and beautiful in presentation, they have a full service bar but we had green tea with our meal which was quite flavorful. I had a wonderful taste treat with the mixed vegan nagari, every nigiri was wonderful, unique, and attractive in presentation. We tried two of their vegan soups, the Japanese pumpkin soup was amazing including the enoki mushrooms having been pre marinated before going into the soup and the miso soup had a wonderful green onions and enoki mushrooms as well. As for the sushi rolls, my favorite was the earthquake roll and my wifes was the red lady roll, for a different take, they have a wagyu roll which was beyond beef across the outside of vegetables on the inside. I cannot encourage you to try this restaurant anymore than this, and if the vegan rolls and vegan products here are this yummy, then those other products with fish and chicken and etc must also be quite good!

Showed up with my wife and 2 kids. We were told theyre only seating parties of 3 or less. So then I said give me 2 tables for two each, (well pay separately) they said sorry we cant. The whole thing was awkward. A real shame because we really wanted to try this place since my sister highly recommended it. I dont think Ill give this place a second chance. Still SMH!

Great sushi! The service was a bit lack luster, but the excellent fish definitely made up for it. The chefs special roll, mango tango roll, and Nigiri were all excellent. Definitely would recommend Blue Ocean for inventive sushi dining experience.

I want to like it but I can’t find any rolls that I’m crazy about that would keep me coming back. Otherwise the ambiance is nice and they have interesting cocktails.
