Excellent intro to Eritrean food with the house special platters - got the veggie combo, meat combo, tibsi and they were plenty for 4. Interesting flavors, great fresh peppers 🌶 hot! The spices are gold for any spicy food lover.

We just love Cafe Eritrea D’Afrique! We make it a point to eat several times a year since we discovered it 35 years ago. We get the combination plate with meat & vegetable dishes (now called the sampler plate). Just love the spices in the dishes and eating it without silverware using pieces of inkers bread. It’s the same warm cozy place it has always been.

Enter midday to the fragrance of frankincense and roast coffee, for what is truly an authentic East African experience.For those in love with the fermented tanginess of injera, try the Quanta Firfir — dried beef mixed in spicy sauce and injera. While indeed this dish calls for double carb (injera wrapped in injera) definitely worth visiting when doing a carbo load before a long cardio. Tibsi, beef cooked both spicy and saucy — amazing.One dish can easily feed 2 people. Come with friends or expect to pack home some yummy leftovers.

L have had a good share of Ethiopian food over the years and even the very sweet hostess said there’s really no difference between Eritrean and Ethiopian food, but theirs was better than virtually any other place! Went with the house sampler. Fresher spices, more unique flavors, and a packed dining room within an hour of opening! The salad was super crisp and fresh, too!

The proportion of food to injera is perfect. I always order the combos (house combo or veggie). Very delicious. Price went up on many items - do not let that deter you. It’s worth every dollar.

Absolutely delicious Shiro, almost exactly like the Shiro shop I used to frequent when I was in Ethiopia. In the States, no place has satisfied my craving for Shiro except for this place. It is just 100X better than any other place. It comes in that canonical cast iron bowl with a straw top, which is how I had seen it previously served, and has the thickness I prefer, which is like a thick soup.I also enjoy the (raw) Kitfo as well, it comes slightly warm and is such a delicious texture and taste. I come here about once a month to satisfy my cravings, and dont recommend ordering delivery because the food in restaurant is just so much better. It also has the classic music videos playing on screen in the restaurant, which is very reminiscent of the places I went to in Ethiopia.In terms of consistency, Ive only been disappointed once by the food out once out of the about 7-8 times Ive been here. So, if youre a big fan of shiro or kitfo, or youre looking to explore different authentic cuisines, Id really give this place a shot!Caveat - The meat dishes are ok, Im personally not a fan of ziggni, I find it too dry, but others have liked it. Im a big fan of lamb tibs in general, but would prefer the meat in thinner strips rather than cubes from a textural standpoint. But really, come here for the Shiro!

I have been many times. There is one specific waitress who is very kind and sweet. She is the only good thing about this place. The food is very mediocre and not at all worth the expensive prices they charge. The people are rude and unhelpful, only wanting money and that’s all. Again, I urge you not to throw your money away here

I think this was the first place ever that I tried injera and the different vegetarian spiced platters and it was amazing. Just last week I did it again, the $20 vegetarian sampler platter (I forget the actual name on the menu) and it was still as amazing as ever.This is where I would not recommend getting meat because I tried the injera at another place with samples of the meat side dishes and the meat really distracts from the wonderful spices, grain, and vegetables.The downside is the sampler plate is for 2-3 people and I just went by myself... but other a good meal for two at around $25 with tip and tax.

If youve never had Ethiopian or Eritrean food before, this is an absolute must!The food is served in huge portions and is incredibly Devine. The Cafe itself is so homey and welcoming, definitely an atmosphere of family and kindness.Im sure there are plenty of other restaurants in the area from their culture, but I will most definitely be returning here!Vegetarian plate is super filling even for 2 people that eat a lot, and the HONEY WINE!!!! Delicious 10/10

I can’t recommend this place enough. I just moved to the neighborhood and wanted something close by. So happy I came in here. I got their vegetarian combo and my partner got the meat sampler. Both were phenomenal, incredibly flavorful. Service was friendly and everyone in here was just chatting and having a good time. We will definitely be back for more!

The food here is incredible!My son was in Ethiopia via Peace Corps for almost 2 years until they recalled him because of the pandemic.We have eaten there twice and plan on eating there many times in the future.My son says their food is legit and reminds him of when he was there.I definitely recommend you check them out!

My wife and I ate here for the first time based on the recommendation of my daughter. The good is very good and at a good price. Ive traveled to other countries that eat without fork & knife, so eating by tearing off bread is okay with me. The Hostess was very friendly. I would eat here again on future trips back to Oakland.

We love this place. They are located on Telegraph very close to the Berkeley / Oakland border. The staff is welcoming and friendly. The food is excellent. We no longer live close by, but continue to make trips out from the Central Valley just to eat there.

I came for dinner with my friend who lives near here. I like Ethiopian food a lot and it didnt disappoint. There were about 50% Ethiopian (and possibly Eritrean) customers, with the rest a sampling of the neighborhood. There is a casual happy atmosphere. Consistently amazing food and cozy, authentic environment. Restaurant of choice for my boys for special family occasions. The family platter is simply delicious and has suuuper generous portion sizes-family platter for four and my two 200+ lb boys leave with leftovers. Whaaa...? Best Ethiopian/Eritrean food Ive ever had in the states.Until finding this AMAZING spot I have never felt the Ethiopian food in the states lives up to what I had when visiting Ethiopia but this place is absolutely amazing.Good portions (you can basically get 2 meals out of most dishes) and the food is SO delicious and tastes just like the amazing food I ate in Ethiopia.I ordered the Chicken Tibis and it was hot, flavorful and complex. I had not had Chicken Tibis in Ethiopia but really loved this dish. I definitely could have saved half for a lovely lunch the following day but it was so good I finished the whole thing.If you are unsure about this place JUST TRY IT, you will not be disappointed.

They will make gluten free injera if you call 2 hours ahead! The kitfo is very good; they serve it with greens and house cheese. I went with friends and we ordered the combo platter. We had the same dish prepared with lamb and beef. I think it was tibes. Both were delicious, but the lamb won it for me because it was more tender and flavorful. Everything on the platter was delicious. They included a generous portion of salad, which is a pro in my book. They also distributed the dishes well around the platter so both sides of the table had access to all of the dishes without having to reach over or turn the platter too much. So happy to have the spot in my neighborhood!

This is an excellent little Cafe on Telegraph in Oakland. Cross street is 40th street. I have eaten here before and took an Ethiopian friend there for lunch. Good conversation and great food. You cant go wrong with Cafe Eritrea.

Probably the best Habesha menu in East Bay. The place is cozy but not elegant. The dinning is next to the bar. I would say Kitfo is their signature dish, a delight for raw or mildly cooked meat lovers. The Qeen Sheba dish is unique as it comes sizzling!!
