Cool hidden location on Westcliff Dr near my old business location was neat for me to see all the old stores I used to visit. Food was good prices are more than I prefer to pay but for the location being Newport Beach not to bad.

One of our favorite sushi places! The fish is always so fresh tasting and the toppings are beautifully delicious. Love their selection of unique rolls! Always love coming here knowing were in for a treat!

First time dining here. Ordered the “ocean” set which came with edamame, tuna sashimi, two hand rolls and 6 pieces of nigiri sushi. I also ordered takoyaki as a starter. First off, the takoyaki was crispy on the outside, flavor was good but the inside was mostly dough and very little octopus (tako). For the sushi set, the salmon was the most disappointing, a bit dry and was not fatty or moist like others I’ve had. The sea bream had yuzu chili on top which was tasty. Albacore and yellowtail was good. Nothing really wowed us. For the price of $27 for the set, I thought it was okay. It looked similar to Sugarfish in photos but in reality, it doesn’t compare. I wanted it to melt in my mouth. We did enjoy the ambiance and outdoor seating. Sadly hot tea was not powdered green tea but in a tea bag. Such a shame that the sushi was mediocre. With so many sushi spots around, not sure if I will return.

Incredibly delicious sushi served up with gracious hospitality in a cute spot. Each time weve gone, weve been treated to amazing food and service. Everythings good but the specialty rolls are worth a try. Yum yum, well be coming back!Update: we moved out of town but just got back on a visit, 7 months later and this was on the list for our first day. Same great food and amazing service as always. Our server even recognized us which was a nice touch!

This place has super high quality and fresh sushi. Some of the best sushi I have ever had! I got The Ocean and it was so good! The meal was expensive for the amount of food you get but the quality justifies the cost. Attached are pictures of what you get when you order the Ocean.

Newly opened, family operated sushi restaurant in Newport. I ordered The Ocean and everything was fresh and light. I ate enough but didnt feel heavy/sluggish like after some places that over sauce/flavor their food to compensate for quality.Happy hour menu had good prices.Vegan options available.I accidentally ate the other stuff before I remembered to take quick pics for a review ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The food was really delicious and fairly priced. It also had a nice outdoor seating area with some heaters. In addition, our server was super friendly and she totally made it more fun. 100% recommend this place if youre looking for a casual environment with some good Japanese food. You can also make a reservation!

The Ocean Omakase style sushi experience was wonderful, tasty and reasonably priced. Staff was friendly and professional. Atmosphere was relaxed. Will come back again soon!

My wife and I went for Valentines Day. The fish is very fresh and service was great. There is no sushi bar only table service which we kinda liked. Very tastefully decorated. Only things would change is to add a padded back rest on the long booth. The pillows are nice but they move around and just not very comfortable.

Such a great little spot❤️ on Saturday night, the folks at Cafe Sakana were able to get us in very quickly without reservation. The food was out to us within 10 mins, despite them being at full capacity. Everything we tried was delicious; we had the Olivia Roll, Osaka roll, and a couple of appetizers… everything was so fresh and was prepared cleanly and beautifully!And the staff was all so kind and accommodating. They checked up on us multiple times to make sure we were comfortable, and thanked us for being patient while waiting for our table (even though we only waited for about 10 mins).We’ll definitely return to Cafe Sakana the next time we’re in town!!

We were a group of 4 and as such able to order a variety of appetizers and rolls off the menu. Everything we had was delicious. The fish was fresh, serving sizes were great and service was amazing.

Tried this place with some friends on opening night. Cafe Sakana is located in between a couple business and is a little hidden at first (at least from the parking lot) but once you make your way through you’ll see that the restaurant has plenty of room. There is a nice patio area to sit in, which would be great for the summer, and a nice modern interior which provides a very calming atmosphere. Overall I thought the ambiance was set up very nicely.Food wise, I took advantage of their happy hour special and order a cut roll as well. I found their portions to be very good and the quality of the fish was honestly a lot better than I was anticipating.Finally, the service. I think they got more customers than they anticipated opening night so there was a slight delay however the staff was in constant communication with us about our orders and made sure to check in on us to make sure we were catered to anything we needed. Overall I had a great experience and I’m sure this place will attract many customers in time!

Cafe Sakana is quickly turning into my absolute favorite sushi restaurant in town. Quality is top notch and the bill is shockingly friendly every time i visit.It is family owned and operated and the staff in its entirety are some of the nicest people to sling sushi.I was raised in Japan and still head over once a month for work. I find myself running straight here when i fly back. It’s that good. There’s plenty of great sushi and bad sushi in Newport/Costa Mesa but I stand firmly behind this being my choice of where to get my sushi fix. The outdoor dining area is great for families and bringing your pup if you so desire and the happy hour has my favorite sake from Japan at a price way too low for profit!

Went here because a friend of mine recommended it. I love sushi and this place seemed really good.I think one of the people who served us was named Jay. He was super helpful and explained the menu to us. We ended up getting the Ocean and the Ocean Blessing sets, as well as the Salmon Fresca.The fish was very fresh and high quality. Our server also took the time to explain each of the pieces of fish. Presentation was amazing, you can tell that the chefs not only care about the quality of food, but also the way it looks, which I think adds to the experience. Honestly it was one of the best omakase sets Ive had in the OC. Ive had sushi in Japan as well and this place is definitely comparable.We also had hot green tea, which our servers were kind enough to keep our mugs filled throughout our meal. For dessert we got the green tea ice cream as well as the green tea mochi.Overall, it was a fantastic experience. Food quality and service were on point. It wasnt too busy but even if it were, you can tell that they emphasize service here.My friend and I even stayed late chatting and they didnt bother us even after they started closing. We were so appreciative that they were very thoughtful and didnt kick us out.Highly recommend this place for any sushi lovers.

A friend recommended this place and it looked promising. Sadly was left disappointed. The spicy tuna don flavor was lacking and I was left hungry. The miso soup was great but with tax $13.49 I was expecting more. Next time I will order the Ocean Box on a day I want to be fancy.

Good quality fish. Miso very good. Edamame was solid. Good service. Price very good. A little heavy on the rice but not surprising given the price point. A nice, clean, family run place that seems great for the neighborhood.

The quality of the fish here is phenomenal. I ordered the salmon, yellow tail, and albacore nigiri. The fish was fresh and the cuts were thick. Would definitely come back.

The entrance has jasmine flowers off to the left that really adds to the Japanese vibe! Seating indoors or outdoors (in case of that sunny socal weather). Sushi is high-quality, with must-get Takoyaki and Mochi ice cream. Service was great, the waiter was extremely knowledgeable of the food that was being served (which is a huge plus because half of it was new to us). There is also a decent sized bar if you are looking to drink some sake or Japanese beer. Definitely going back again to try different cuts of sushi.

I love this place. Its intimate and friendly. Great food and people. Price is decent but worth it. I love coming here with friends and family. Menu is small which makes it easier to order.
