Happened to stumble upon a student exhibit by students from CSULB at Brouwjeri West in San Pedro in may 2022. Lots of fun looking at the well designed exhibition booths.
Beautiful campus, though the school itself looks like its due for a bit of a refresh. The surrounding area appears a little dense.
The kids went to Summer Camp here and the loved it. Sports activity after activity.
Based on my experiences studying here I do have to advise for someone considering attending this university to consider attending a different school.I was shocked to discover that there are stalkers who wait by the campus library then follow a student off campus either by getting on the same bus or waiting to follow them in their car.This is a university that allows protesters against the GLBT community. I’m not part of this but disappointed in the intellectual deficiency especially when it’s by Christian groups who Violate God’s Law and the Bible.In addition to my vehicle being struck in a hit-and-run for attending this university, I was assaulted after leaving the museum.Be forewarned that this is a university that has staff that retaliate against a student for reporting hostility on campus. The University of California has done studies on the common tactics used by schools to cause harm against students and CSULB is a university that in fact does discriminate and retaliate against students who report hostility similar to how the former Chancellor and Student Judicial Affairs from UC Davis and how they were taken to court for their actions. EOP, the Disabled Student Services, and Veterans Services are just as likely to instigate or contribute to the sabotage of a student.This is a university where psychology/witchcraft are commonly used to sabotage or influence a student into being injured.I also discovered how bigoted Central American people are towards people from Mexico, but show preference towards other cultures.As a Native American, I was shocked at how bad the university really is. They even plagiarized the blue pyramid from another university, they can’t create something unique.
Came for an end of the year Print making party. Impressive student work, faculty, facilities and of course people. Besides, the campus has excellent architecture, layout and atmosphere. I am impressed and inspired.

LB State is a great school with wonderful professors and staff. If you are a student, I would recommend joining ASI so that you can be part of the community on campus and participate in all of the fun activities. Joining a club can be really nice, as they have clubs like surfing or salsa dancing. They also have those as actual classes so if youre considering that, super worth it. On the campus there are three food places outside of the student union that serve actual food and are great places to hang, each with their own style and feel. The campus is fairly easy to traverse and everything is fairly close to each other. The gym offers a lot of different activities including rock climbing, massages, and even acupuncture. while youre there, dont sleep on the student union as there are a lot of areas to meet, hang out, play pool or even go swimming. If you are going to the school you will find your Zen, whether it is on a field, at the gym, at the library, or at one of the many hang out places across campus. I had a great time there and I think you will too!!
Parking situation is absurd. But it’s a nice campus, I really like the landscaping. Close to the beach so the air quality and weather tends to be quite pleasant
The International Student Service is a big freaking joke. They absolutely do not monitor or even care about international students. They do not notify anything in advance. When you write to them, they simply do not answer. When you remind them of your message after a couple of days, they begin to aggressively hint that there was no meeting with an advisor since no one told some important information, and they simply choose to ignore why they did not answer on time. Then they warn you that something is wrong with your account only two weeks later when you already cannot change anything. All they care about is money, and trust me you pay 8.5k (roughly 3 times more) for the tuition.This university is great, but the ISS sucks. If you are an international student, try something else or good luck.
Beautiful campus. If you are in the area, you must stop by and go for a stroll. There are iconic structures like the Walter pyramid and wonderful picturesque features like fountains and sculptures. Be prepared for a long walk, its a large campus.
Park view dorms. No AC during heatwave. We had two window fans, two desk fans and two floor fans. The temperature inside the dorms was 95* at 10:00 PM. Try studying and sleeping in that heat. Trash cans overflowing outside of dorms. Cockroaches on walls. Ant infestation inside dorm rooms. Art building has no AC. Third world country conditions in So Cal. Absolutely disgusting.They serve left over meals from the previous day. Example: Fajitas was served two days in a row. The second day they ran out of tortilla’s and chips so they served mashed potatoes with the fajitas. Yum!No excuses. Fix the issues CSLB.
Faculty are respectful, lots of programs and different courses of all levels, and class prices are reasonable. School encourages students to succeed and to be involved with the community.
Beautiful Campus and amazing people. Parking is a huge problem, so I would recommend to take the bus. Its $40 a semester so thats already less than the parking permit and you dont have to waste money on gasoline and you dont have to look for parking spaces.
I love being visiting there everyday. Also because it is one of the best value schools in the state, with low tuition fees, high social mobility rate, and earning potential after graduation.
I am a parent on a campus tour. The noise from construction on both sides of the campus at 9 am was excessive. I could not carry on a conversation without being a foot away from the person talking. Often having to shout. I could not find a peaceful part of the main campus public areas. Then add in planes overhead and gardeners with leaf blowers, I would prefer my child not go here. The single second year dorms at Hillside felt like a closet. Parkside freshmen dorms seemed much better with dual occupancy. No known kitchen facilities in the on campus dorms nor quiet study areas. The recreation area which was very nice, was quite a distance from the dorms. The town was great but lots of traffic. Price to attend, weather, and location are great.
Nice Campus, good services. Originally, i was going to use the word beautiful when describing the campus, but people reading this might have their own idea of the word so i decided to use a more generic adjective. The campus it self is big, and its really nice in my opinion. Theres plenty of food options inside, a nice bookstore, a big library that is always busy, and a huge campus thats easy to the eye. The place also has good advising centers, BUT when it comes to the instructors... Id give the place a 3/5. I do feel however that my dislikes with the instructors is in big part connected to the way college in general works. This place is nice, heck...its great, and id recommend it.
First of all, a very huge campus! Expect a lot of walking. However, theres some nice little places to study and to unwind. I really like the Japanese garden they have on campus. Very peaceful and quiet. The downside is if youre commuting, its a war to find parking.
Parking can be rough, but there are more and more options for students now than when I attended as an undergrad and later as a grad students. Many majors and programs.Beautiful campus and youll say fit romping up and down the hill.
I remember getting off the public bus to use the womens restroom here back in Spring semester 2017. A student helped me find the restroom. I was a student from LBCC who had a kidney problem. I had hard time walking because my sides kept aching. Im glad that a nice lady showed me the way to the restroom. I no longer have health issues. But I love this university because of many friendly students!
CSULB is an Amazing School!The students and staff are very friendly and there is a lot of clubs you can join to make friends and get connections. The schools Student Union is well equipped and they often makes special events around campus so you always have something fun to partake.
WORSE SCHOOL EVER! They overcharge you for everything! Parking SUCKS! Constantly giving students tickets and no matter if you buy the parking for $130.00 each semester, there is no way youll find a parking spot if you come in after 9:30 each morning. The school constantly look for excuses to charge students more and more. The departments hate each other and are in a constant competition with each other. No one cares about student. If your major requires you to take classes from multiple departments, you are in a big trouble, since the departments do not check their schedule with each other, so all classes overlap. Everything is too political and racist in this damn school. Never doing my graduate studies here. Our department is begging me to stay, (they offered to waive my tuition, hire me as a TA and pay me on top it), but NOPE! Never in million years. No one cares how good you are. Hispanic students get lots and lots of opportunities, whereas other races have no programs or opportunities. FYI, I have nothing against Hispanics, but places like this make you wonder, why them and not me? Because Im not Latino? Really? Scholarships are based on whether you know someone in the committee or not. (I have tested that myself!!) Research opportunities are for Hispanics only or people who have connections. Someone need to audit this school ASAP! Hated it!
I wish I could stay at the university for the rest of my life. I’m in my last year of Masters in Civil engineering and I love it.
First thing I learned at this school was the importance of conformity. The director of the History Department (David Schaefer) told me not to fight any grades and that I should just conform in the future work place. Professors are petty, show favoritism, and ignore students they dislike. Conservative students are singled out the worst but its pretty much anyone who disagrees with anything big or small. Also not a social campus. Lots of nerds that just show up, study and retreat home. Ill give it a 2 star just because the campus itself is gorgeous.
Came here for a conference. The faculty (at least in the physics department) is very intelligent and has a great sense of humor. Beautiful campus, but they still have their fountains on and lawns kept green, despite the drought.
Parking is over priced and over sold.Dealing with staff is typical government. They have a job and cant be fired.Classes hard to get for this second rate school.They tend to discriminate against non minorities.The book store, get this, won an award. Only department on campus that has won anything. Unfortunately this award has no reflection on the institutional portion of the school.Poorly laid out campus. Doze the soccer field and put in more parking. They have a lot of wasted space.Fees keep increasing out pacing inflation yet class size and quality of professors get worse.

I spent 5 years at CSULB completing my undergraduate degree in dance. There are so many ways to get involved and vast opportunities to meet others like or unlike self. I definitely made the right choice in going to this school. If you like beautiful weather, mellow atmosphere, and people watching, this school is simply amazing.
I attended this school from 2002 to 2006 and loved it loved it loved it. Lived in the dorms (Parkside Commons), joined a sorority (Alpha Phi), lived life to the fullest and had an amazing time. Graduated with a BA in Comm and a heart full of great memories. Every second was a blast. I also was fortunate to attend during President Maxsons tenure, and he was such a supportive, positive influence on the school and the students. Maybe that had something to do with it! Go beach!
All talk and no or little actions. most of professors are good and vary acomdainison and Bmac is helpful as well ( I will give both of them 5 star). However, Administration is not accommodates AT ALL. they say they are but reality their not. To be fair long as you have a good relationship with professor and BMAC you will be ok. and BMAC is your best friend when come to dealing with the Administration
Good kind people. Great open campus. Great eco-friendly environment . Not Great but decent food to eat when we are in dorms. Speaking of dorms, the ones on this campus have earned a good score because it is quiet, and sometimes to quiet... squint squint. Also I read all about this campus online as one of the safest dorms to stay in for a university. Average rating (safety) 4.4 out of 5 (y) I am studying a field in medical and biological science so this may be an unfair review compared to others who have another field. I personally think the staff are very reliable and honest. They can help you with your deadlines and info that need to be due on TIME, and if YOU JUST DONT RUSH THEM, EVERYTHING WILL GO SMOOTHLY thats how I got the best SERVICE. Thats a lesson about Patience.
Dear CSULB, I remember I have visited you before, and all I really have to say is, I love you very much. You are such a very beautiful university Ive ever seen in my entire life, and you are the best university EVER!!!!! 💛🖤😊😄😌BTW equally important, I want to become a manufacturing inventor with a business major. I want to invent a time machine and not only travel through time (especially to the past), but also stay remaining completely young forever (like in our teen/young adult ages) and never grow old. I did some research on Google that inventors usually study business classes. I also wish to invent a pill thatll make young people like me stay young forever and ever and ever and also become immortal and live forever, even make our parents and family members live forever. I do not want to get old and die. I want to stay young forever and ever and ever with these reasons stated above. Best pyramid around. !Pretty sure there is a bigger one, with lasers and smoke,somewhere near el monte but this one is pretty cool!No giant cats around I could find but the natives are very friendly. No reason to shoot their noses off anyway.
When I was in high school, I was only allowed to apply to two schools that my parents chose. One of them was CSUF and the other was CSULB. I was mopey for awhile because I really wanted to go to schools like UCLA or UCSB, but I guess my parents wishes were a blessing in disguise. I am currently a sophomore, and am grateful that I am a 49er! (I heard the mascot is changing, so Im not sure if this comment will be relevant in the near future). I can say that 90% of the professors that I had were spectacular! They all want the best for their students, and you can always meet up with them for help in office hours or by appointment. Also, unlike other colleges that I have visited, CSULB has a very unique mellow atmosphere. Everyone is so down to earth and so... mellow. There really is no better word to describe this school. Its most likely because there are trees and foliage everywhere. The campus is relatively large as well, but there are shuttles that come around every fifteen minutes or so, which transport students around campus. Tis very helpful. The only critique I can make is that CSULB needs more parking spaces. Finding a parking space early in the morning is easy peasy, but it takes me at least half an hour (if Im lucky) to find a space past 11 A.M.! Other than that, the school is amazing. Its filled with many opportunities to get involved and meet new people, has convenience stores scattered all around campus so procrastinators can purchase green books and scantrons five minutes before class, and employs hundreds of faculty members whose job is to help every student succeed. Choose the Beach! You wont regret it.
New Track, its just a perfect place for the athletes to work out and have new PRs. The Field is perfect too. The long jump pits and the runways make you want to compete. The runway for javelin the same. Excellent place to do some pole vaulting.
To start, I have designated a 3.5 star rating attributed to the university as a whole.Now that this is out of the way, I am pleased to inform you that for the money, you will receive a quality education here. I graduated in December 2014 with a BA in Environmental Science and Policy, and I can honestly aver that I had (on average) really great professors (professor quality could vary based on your academic focus). I studied for five years here, and am now on my way to UC Irvine to complete my Masters.While there are many notable strengths as far as educational inquiry is concerned, the university itself falls short of (ideally) the entire college experience. Is this a commuter school? Yes. Does school spirit lack? From my experience, yes. Is social life lacking (aka. the party scene)? From an observational basis, yes (way more than what you will find at universities such as USC and UCSB). Is parking atrocious (see other reviews)? Indeed, but that ultimately depends on the time you plan to park.If there is one piece of advice I have for incoming freshman, it is to take advantage of any opportunities the university has to offer. Whether that is to join a club, frat/sorority, organization, cause, (etc.) is completely up to you. Engagement outside the classroom will help mitigate the effects of what I like to call commuter syndrome. Make no mistake, CSULB is deemed a commuter school by most, so become proactive if you can.Overall, theres a lot to like about CSULB: good professors, friendly people, an exceptional athletics program, a nice campus, and an exquisite Japanese Garden. Just be aware of the aforementioned caveats.
Hope they make more study places. Food courts or cafeteria are not the study places (it can be, but its packed). The engineering department has been changing LAB, professors, and class rooms just recently (2015). As a ME student, I’m not sure the education quality is higher or not. I plan to take the PE exam and wish them to follow PE exam problems a bit. CSULB lacks of ME profs, so it causes less classes. This makes problems with the class confliction and hard to take classes. If you try to take like 400 classes, there are usually 2 or 3 classes. I will graduate soon, so I cant do anything with it, but at least this helps you.One more. No study place leads everyone goes home after class. Your friends in University are very important especially in the same major. Study buddy makes very good connection and you learn very much stuff with them even though prof isn’t good at teaching.
In regards to the other reviews, EVERY Cal states parking SUCKS not just Long Beach! Every university is impacted, therefore, parking is FULL!!! Of course you will get a citation for parking on carpool space and employee spot, wouldnt that also apply ANYWHERE else?! People find any STUPID excuse to downgrade this school. Any employer will tell you Cal State Long Beach is a great school because it happened to me during interviews! The professors are awesome, of course its not easy but its an higher education; its not suppose to be easy, just like any Cal States. I love this school and I wouldnt change it for the world. I recommend this school 200%. You wont be disappointed!oh! and the schools bookstore won FIRST place out of the whole region for great service! and that trophy is placed in the bookstores entrance for proof. :)

Amazing campus. Location. People. Everything. Visited and fell in love when other colleges like UCSD and SDSU had accepting me, being on campus completely sold me. I am attending next year.
I had never had a problem with CSULB seeing as I dont attend there. However I feel compelled to talk about the horrible way they treat people with disabilities. Today for their commencement ceremony they could not be bothered to help people who needed it. It got too messy so rather than come up with a system they bunched people who needed assistance with all others. So there I was walking around with my grandmother who is over 80 and partially paralyzed due to a stroke with no one from CSULB helping in anyway. Thanks to the aid of others I was able to get her seated so she could see her favorite granddaughter graduate from University but I was disgusted by the uncaring behavior from the staff. By the time we were in her seat my grandmother was exhausted and being diabetic, had low blood sugar. All of which could have been avoided if there had been a method of transporting those with a disability quickly to be seated. I saw dozens of people in wheelchairs, even those with amputated legs not being assisted in anyway. CSULB decided to ignore the issue instead. I have never been so disgusted. Thank you to all the kind people who helped today.
Great school. The campus is huge and the weather is great. The psychology department has tremendous resources available as well as knowledgeable, efficacious professors.
This College was my safety net and for me its an average decent school. I would give it 4 stars but the reason I give 5 is because I have a lot of friends and so many connections. Most of my tutors when I was K-12 studied there and many of my fav LosAl grads mostly go here. In fact, 141 grads of 2016 come here the most ever. I already know so many ppl who go here and I love it! People matter most to me thats why I rate 5 stars. :)

This is my alma mater. Great education, great value, one beautiful pyramid, the womens soccer is on the rise, and its winning Big West Commissioners Cups every now and then. Caution: the womens volleyball teams have regressed at this school.
MPA program very disappointing. I picked it because the curriculum looked better than other similarly priced programs but the experience has been horrible so far. Details: 1) Couldnt get any night/weekend classes, 2) Orientation was given by an angry rude man who was the opposite of welcoming, 3) 1st class the professor assigns 100 pages of heavy reading & 1,000 words writing each week for a 3 hr class & immediately leaves on vacation & doesnt answer emails, 4) 2nd professor holds VERY low standards for class work, definitely not Masters level education. Only a small percentage of the students seem to have had a decent undergrad education.
You can get a decent education here. But the tragic under-funding of the CSUs by the state of California still makes CSULB, one of its flagship campuses, feel overcrowded and under-served. Too many of its faculty are temps, its class sizes are too big, and it doesnt provide enough on-campus study spaces for its students. The library is good for pop books, and older scholarship, but not for doing contemporary social science and humanities research. If youre a high school or community college student, set your sights on trying to transfer into a UC school if you can, before you go to a CSU.
Going to school here is awesome, but living in Long Beach totally sucks. The school is pretty much located in the ghetto of Long Beach...I was in the CBA for Human Resources Management, and I was always shocked at how many stupid students I had in my classes.
Worst school I have ever been to and I am far from 18 years old. I am old enough to have grand kids. I have seen it all but I have never seen so much arrogance, racism and corruption in my whole life. If you apply I hope you are a US Citizen resident of California, if not I suggest you run away as fast as you can. The only person in charge of residency for the entire University, Dianne North, hates immigrants and told me she will deny my residency endless and no one in the entire school cares. The ombudsman and the director in charge of the Equity and Diversity Office are also extremely corrupted and wont even listen to student issues. Again, run away. If you have options do not enroll here. This school has been my worst nightmare.
The staff was kind and quick to get my mothers vaccination in addition to having assistance in Spanish. less than 30 minutes I was on my way home now to wait for the second dose lets go california
Went for the first Covid 19 vaccine. Well thought out, well planned and well executed. Plenty of parking, checking in and plenty of vaccination stations. GREAT job!!!

Cal.state long beach is one of kaiser hospitals satellite covid vaccination sites.there is ample parking and with a reservation I was in and out in less then half an hour, it was well organized and everyone was very curtious and professional

Before attending this school, see how much diversity is allowed and new ideas are presented from a conservative view point. Find out the ratio between liberal professors vs conservative professors. Worst Experience ever in my FMD 351 fashion class. Its so ridiculous that they require students in that class to fund raise $150 for the school fashion show and it will affect the class grade?!? I hope the school could pay attention to this problem. Many fashion students do not really like it.

The way classes are taught it seems more like a technical school than University

2023-08-27 23:49:20The best decision of my life is to pursue a Graduate Degree in Computer Science from this University. I feel like its the best place to study because it opens up to travel more. Trekking and Beach Side both are accessible and super amazing with friends and family.

2023-04-11 18:31:24Beautiful college campus in the heart of Long Beach. The campus classroom buildings all have different characteristics from those that are modern to those that still have vintage aesthetic qualities to them. The campus is packed with students but the area and space is vast enough to feel comfortable while walking to and from classes. Everyone looks focused and ready to learn! There are many food options situated all across campus and the cafeteria I ate at had ample space for all the students to sit and relax in between classes.

2022-09-17 13:52:11My son did his MS here for two years. We couldnt see his university when he was studying and on his convocation in 2020 because of covid. So we decided to visit it now. The campus is so vast some say over 200 acres...that my son drove us through the university. Beautiful layout, the Japanese garden and the pyramid are landmarks of the university. As a state university its very affordable. There are lots of student housing around. There are different sections of university for each branch of learning with huge buildings. The long beach bus service is free for students. According to my son the staff is great and so are the classes. Student recreation center and medical facilities free for students. My son enjoyed learning in this university and we were impressed to see it.....👌🏼👌🏼🙂🙂👍🏻

2021-05-22 16:08:08My experience at CSULB as an international student:—I majored in Studio Art so I spent a lot of time in the studio and outside just to look at the nature for inspiration.— CSULB has a beautiful campus with people from all over the world. School of Art is on upper campus. So it’s a bit of a walk from students parking.— I had the opportunity to work at the pyramid, a state of the art volleyball/ basketball facility. Really interesting building!— International department is helpful but it seems like they are overloaded.— All the advisor are helpful and willing to work with you, so I really appreciate that.Thanks CSULB for having me!

2023-10-18 17:32:29Everything so far so good but if u need help through phone then good luck. Not only one time but several times if I tell all of it would be a couple pages of essay so let me tell what happened just yesterday.I need to talk to my advisor and I made wrong appointment due to some staff told me to but the advisor through zoom was so nice, she didnt get mad at all so I end up called in STUDENT SERVICE (keep in mind that Im international student and this is my first year as transfer so everything is new to me).Back to when I called in and here is what Im about to say “ I want to take an appointment with my advisor but idk how. Can you help me out?” but before I an reach to the part “but idk….” he cut me off not ONCE but TWICE and said with his tone THIS IS NOT THE NUMBER FOR THAT (ughh student need help so thats why we have student service???!?) then maybe he expected me to feel happy to be cut off? So I said back I know sir thats why I call in to get help and he keep repeat NO THIS NO THAT and I said ok can I have the right number please and he act like a victim and blame me “he tries to help but cant because the way I talk to him” ??!? Big question mark for me and then before I can say anything he hung up?!?! It was just yesterday 10/17/23 at 11:03am so SIR IF U READ THIS YOU NEED TO TAKE AN ACTING CLASS BECAUSE STUDENT SERVICE NOT A RIGHT ONE FOR YOU.

2020-11-03 10:11:56One of the best places around Los Angeles. I did my masters in Computer Science from the university.It is a very diverse. The campus is excellent. The campus is smoking free and supports economic and green life.Not too many words but its a good place to go to and would recommend.

2021-07-30 18:10:57Wonderful University experience as a student. Also a great place to visit an alumni, which allows for library privileges. I havent seen the library renovations due to the pandemic, but Im sure they will be awesome.
