UPDATE: 2 years after my initial experience here this place is still cranking out some of the best gelato in Berkeley, partially because its just really fresh, and also, because theyre using some good chocolate, whatever brand it is.Great Gelato spot in Berkeley, with a few innovative flavors amongst the normal Gelato fare, they are always testing new ideas and flavors. A step above the ordinary, this is the place to get your Cold Sugar fix on.
Random walk-in on a Monday night. This place was quite busy with regular patrons for a reason!Their pricing is super reasonable for the quality they put out. The owner told us they make their gelato in-house and you can definitely taste it! We ordered the fiordilatte, stracciatella, and passion fruit gelato and all were not overly sweet and the flavors were sophisticated. This is a great spot to try unique gelato.
The gelato came out a bit icy and under flavored, but the staff was so friendly and willing to indulge our many tastings. Would recommend a taste, perhaps we ordered the wrong items.
Icee cream was great but the service was really bad. The lady was like really rude to us even we brought 2 pints and 4 scoops She throw the ice cream on the cashier and felt like not welcome at all
The best gelato in the Bay... possibly California. This place really is a lab. They create the most amazing flavours with high quality ingredients. There is no bad choice you can make here. My personal favourites are hazelnut and pistachio. The ambience is also lovely and the people are great and you should really visit if you are in the area.

We lived in Italy for a year and we’ve never been able to find decent gelato in the Bay Area until now. You’ll not regret coming here. I’m giving it 4 stars after a few visits to this place, I have to say frankly the portions are way smaller than in Italy, especially for the price you pay I think it warrants upping their portions a bit more.

Caravaggio has a rotating seasonal selection that changes every few weeks, in addition to their core offerings.Pear tastes like a delicious pear pie.If you’re a restauranteur, they will make custom flavors for you.My biggest gripe is that they are inconsistent with density and texture, both across flavors and within one flavor. I crave dense creaminess. Some flavors seem more like sorbet/creme ice than gelato (too thin or icy, even if smooth; melts too fast, etc.)That said, there are always a couple that I do love (Love!) so just try them all.

Very good gelato. It actually tastes like what the flavor says. Pistachio tastes like real pistachio. Hazelnut like real hazelnut, etc. Actually the flavors may taste more like hazelnut than hazelnuts themselves. I haven’t had that experience anywhere else in the Bay Area.

We always stop by whenever were in town to get the chocolate & pistachio flavors. Theyre usually pretty busy but because of the atmospheric river rain, it was fairly quiet. This time hojicha was on the menu & it did not disappoint.
The flavors were pronounced and the texture was creamy, and the staff were very friendly and patient. Id for sure go back to try the other flavors

Extremely good, even for gelato. Also healthy ingredients and amazing seasonal flavors. The passion fruit, non-vegan chocolate hazelnut, and almond are all personal favorites. Its also all lactose-free dairy milk and youd never notice a taste difference, which is great for people who are lactose intolerant. Plus they have a wide selection of vegan options too. And friendly staff. Clearly Im hooked :)
Best gelato Ive ever had! The flavors are so rich and complex! They use all-natural and high-quality ingredients. Everything is made on-site. You really must go to experience it! Lots of free samples to help you decide on a flavor (it will be a tough call-- theyre all so good!).

Best, best, best best ever Italian Gelato in the Bay Area! They let you try all the flavors if you want before choosing them. If you speak Italian, the owner will entertain you explaining the secrets behind every taste. A bit expensive, but the ingredients are prime quality so its totally worth it!
Best vegan gelato in the bay area hands down. My favorite is getting both passionfruit and dark chocolate. Highly recommend getting a sorbet flavor with the vegan dark chocolate in one of the larger cups.
Good experience. I tried the milk chocolate in a small cup and it tasted great. Theres a very large HDTV screen behind the counter and a restroom for customers. I didnt see the full menu, but you can order coffee drinks.
Exceptional Gelato made on premises. The best pistachio gelato Ive ever had, and Ive had plenty in Italy, France and here in the US! Also had their chocolate with hazelnut and raspberry, grapefruit and milk chocolate flavors. All are very smooth, not too sweet so you can actually taste the fruit or nut flavors.
Texture of ice cream was amazing but lacked flavor. Also all the best flavors were vegan and I really dont like vegan ice cream. However if you are vegan. I would highly recommend this place because it has a wide variety of ice cream for you. It just wasnt for me.

One of the best ice cream I have ever tasted. They use prime quality ingredients and a particular technique (yielding low glycemic index) that results in a light, yet very creamy and flavorful ice cream. The sorbets are also extraordinary.
Ive gone here on two separate occasions now and enjoyed myself both times. The gelato is in small portions but reasonably priced for the quality of the product theyre making. I would say that while some flavors are total knockouts other seem rather weak in the flavor department. Perhaps thats by design but I personally would prefer it if every flavor packed more punch. I would reccomend this place to just about anyone, but definitely try a flavor first before you buy it.
I’ve been getting takeout pints almost every week since the pandemic. I love trying unique flavors and so far every one is just unbelievably fresh and delicious. Can’t believe they even nailed the Matcha flavor since not many shops here have authentic Matcha with just the right amount of sweetness (I would say it’s as good as the Matcha drinks you get in Asha)Recently I’m in love with coconut 🥥 and black currant. Just amazing that they have so many new & different flavors every season. I’m already worried that I can’t find a gelato place as good when I move out of Berkeley in the future :/
Best icecream in Berkeley! The icecream is not too sweet unlike many other places, and truer to the flavour it claims to be. The mango flavour is the closest Ive come to real Indian mango in the US, definitely worth a taste even if you dont buy it!
Got the salted caramel and fior di latte gelato. Tasted wonderful. Excellent service from girl serving today (3/13/22), if youre the boss reading this. Would be back!
This is my favourite gelato place in the bay area. The pistachio is so rich and creamy and they always have simple, but delicate flavours on offer. The owner will gladly explain the whole process and all the ingredients used. Must visit!
I havent been there in over a year but I remember the flavor was good and then what gets me coming back was the texture. Like youre eating nothing but somehow still ice cream. Ive mainly tried their non vegan flavors... Heavenly.
Great selection of gelato and sorbets, all made daily and not pre-frozen. Almost too many choices Great taste. My only qualm is that the pistachio does not have to be dyed green to be appealing. A nice stop when walking around Berkeley.
The quality of the Gelato was just average; the flavors werent bad, but dont expect anything mind-blowing. Also, this place completely skimps on the serving sizes, especially for the price. For example, the small I ordered at Caravaggio = two ping-pong ball sized scoops of gelato. Thats way smaller than every other small gelato Ive ever had elsewhere.
I got the gianduja while my friend got the fiordilatte. I liked mine, but found hers to be tastier. You can only try two samples which imo is a little silly.

We are vegan and are addicted to their sorbets. The dark chocolate sorbet is unlike any I have ever tasted. Its not too sweet and intensely chocolaty.Its sensationally creamy. This stuff produces some serious endorphins!
We tried the fiordelatte and lemon. They were both icy and tasteless and more similar to sorbet than gelato. Would skip this and try something else along the stretch
Great gelato but super expensive. The small (which was two teeny tiny scoops) was 4.50. Lots of vegan/non dairy flavors though, which h was great for me (lactose intolerant).

Don’t understand the high reviews. The worst gelato I have ever had anywhere. Watery and without any punch of flavor. Icy much like the owner. Reminiscent of frozen La Croix.

Go here whenever were in town regardless how full. Exceptional pistachio gelato: better than whats available in Italy or France. Excellent coffee as well. Cold wish for more bitter in the chocolate flavor.

The best gelato Ive had outside of Italy. Every flavor is exquisite. They use a special process so even moderarely lacto-intolerant folks will suffer no side effects....except maybe the desire to come back every day to sample a new flavor.

Great gelato! Its also lactose-free and low carb (xylitol from birch trees). Slooow service (waited for ~10 while two cappuccinos were made before anyone even said hello). But since there arent (m)any low-sugar ice cream joints in town 4 stars.
This is a super cute little shop that Ive stumbled upon while looking up some dessert places online. The girl was super helpful and kind. She loved the dog that my friend had and was very friendly. I had the pistachio and the gianduia (hazelnut flavored) gelato in my affogato (with espresso). My friend had the pistachio and vanilla in her affogato. We were both blissfully happy by the soft and creamy quality. The pistachio had a good toasted flavor, the gianduia was just heavenly and the vanilla had real vanilla.

By far the best gelato in the Bay Area. I have recently moved to San Francisco from Europe and despite all my efforts I could not find anything remotely resembling the original, creamy, flavorful Italian gelato I was used to enjoy back home.Well, that changed when I tried Caravaggios gelato. The quality of their ingredients and the care they put to make the best gelato possible is clearly visible in the final product. Highly recommended!
This is by far the best gelato in town - well I would add the best ice cream in the Bay Area. I know that is a strong statement but these guys are the real deal. Hand made gelato, made on the premises. The flavored are both inventive and authentic to Italy. They are artists of gelato and sorbet. Try the pear, not to be missed.
The most legitimate gelato in the bay area. I lived in Florence for a semester and learned the trick to spotting authentic Italian goods is if the treasure is hidden in the counter, not exposed to the elements. The nocciola is forever my favorite but Caravaggio maintains flavors that are in season.

Ill let you in on a secret. Everyone knows this place has the best Gelato in town. Garavaggio is also hands down the best study spot in the Gourmet Ghetto. The wifi is blazing fast, and you dont need to compete with anyone for space. Compare this with Philz Coffee down the street that has excellent coffee but is always noisy and packed.

Caravaggios gelato has a nice texture but is weak on flavor. Also, the stracciatella, which should be laced with ribbons of chocolate, had only a few specs of chocolate in it.

Another great feature is that they put two scoops next to each other and not one on the top of the other unlike in literally all ice cream shops. Thanks to that you can eat two flavors at the same time!

Plus it said Italian gelato, are you kidding me? You cant simple walk by, pass it and not stop.Very casual and warm atmosphere inside, love the way its done up. Few seats at a large community table and few tables outside as well.Organic milk and great vegan options too. Few great gelato options, sorbets and coffee with great quality here!I love me some pistachio gelato that is not easy to find but this place nailed it. I opted for the cone which was freshly made, crunchy and delicious. Hubby loved his afogato and we had a great time speaking in Italian to the owners.Well located on a busy street like Shattuck and so close to the BART, makes this place ideal spot for that gelato on a hot day! They also have few table games for entertainment :)Gender neutral bathrooms and super clean, happy me :)

2017-03-30 15:13:16Excellent ice cream, one of the best Ive ever tried. As an extra, they do not use sugar, which makes the final product healthier, lighter, and guilty free. One scoop has less calories than an apple! Tastes also better as you can fully appreciate the hazelnut/chocolate/orange etc (depending on the flavour). They also serve piadina:) . Friendly atmosphere.I would definitely recommend.
