We decided to come to this very highly rated restaurant in the fun Castro neighborhood and we’re not disappointed and are to be able to heap more praise on it.This is some of the best Indian food I’ve had anywhere. Everything was made well, using local and organic when possible. The bengan bharta was tart, smoky, and smooth, while the coconut curry veggies were sweet, nutty, and so delicious. The cilantro sauce was better than usual, though the tamarind sauce was a little too thin. And the piña colada with coconut yogurt was quite an unusual treat.We’re already planning to return next week with our cousins.

One of my favorite Indian restaurants in San Francisco!! The food is very delicious, the plating is beautiful, the decorations and ambiance are very good. The cocktails are also amazing. They have the best mango lassi as well.

I had really high hopes for this place given their extensive menu, great location, and service. The only thing that held me back from the 5th star was that even though I asked for mild, all the dishes were very spicy. I can handle it, but many others can’t and it’s disappointing to have the option and it not be followed.

This is the best Indian food I think Ive ever had. The server was very nice and suggested delicious drinks and sides. Would highly recommend it to anyone who likes Indian food or to people looking to try it for the first time. I will be coming back here many times in the future. I cannot stress enough how absolutely lovely the food is.

They brew their own beer! And it’s delicious. Nice bar area, choice of inside or outside seating. Excellent menu, lots of choices, even some Chinese. Superb Indian cuisine. Very good service.Enjoy!

What a great experience we had! We ordered the 6 item taster menu and they customized my husbands to be seafood-less while I was able to enjoy the seafood items. Almost everything was delicious and filling. Absolutely a fun experience! Totally recommend.

Some of the worst Indian food I’ve had. We got takeout. The delta between the reviews and taste is massive. Chicken was tough, okra was tough, lamb was tough, flavor was all around bland, naan was rubbery. There’s no way this is 4.8 star food but it’s not even 3 star food.

Whoa! After two restaurants came and went in this space relatively quickly, this one comes out of nowhere and knocked our socks off. Much more affordable than the two previous iterations and the food is damn good. Got my traditional “let’s see if this place is any good” dish of simple tikka masala and it was spot on. Perfect tanginess, rich, great spice. Husband got coconut curry and equally as good. Samosas were huge and stuffed full. Great rice dessert and even the beer brewed onsite was tasty. Staff was adorable. What an improvement and exactly what the Castro needed!

The place is very very nice, the people are actually from India or from the south asian area, which is a good sign, and they are also very friendly and quick. The food was good but even though it was mild spicy it was still too spicy for me :’) I couldn’t eat all of it so I brought it home and I thought they were going to wrap it up but they left the job to me. I got a mango lassi but in my opinion it was not as tasty as I imagined. But overall we ate good, it’s just maybe not my style, but my sister and father enjoyed it a lot!! The atmosphere is nice and welcoming, there are enough tables outside and inside and there’s one bathroom. There are a lot of vegetarian/vegan options which is very important to me. We paid around $100,something in three people, we got 4 dishes and 2 drinks with 2 little buckets of rice. Would recommend! Thank you love youu

The current incarnation of this restaurant is excellent – much improved over the previous version. My Korma was flavorful and rich, and the add-in salmon was plentiful and top quality. The atmosphere is low-key and the service is friendly. The fact that they’re open for lunch greatly increases a reason to go to the Castro middays.

We came here with a small group on a Saturday night for dinner around 8:30, and Im shocked this place is not packed to the brim. The food is absolutely amazing and the cocktails are creative and delicious! We tried several dishes and cocktails, and there was nothing we didnt like. My favorite things were the chicken wings and the eggplant dip, which were both recommended to us, and I otherwise would have missed them! Every dish had beautiful flavors and was perfectly cooked. We had a great time!

Amazing Indian food, cute decor, and great service! The butter chicken & hakka noodles were really good and they really do make their dishes spicy if you request it. Chicken momos were perfectly soft and looked hand-shaped.Overall, we had a terrific lunch but if I could suggest a few (minor) changes:- The biryani rice can get dry in the clay pot, especially around the edges - might be good to add some water or provide more raita with the biryani to account for this- The mango lassi tastes a bit sour, Im not sure which type of mango is used but a sweeter variety could give it more of the classic mango lassi flavor

We were in the neighborhood going to a show at the Castro theater. Appetizer -calamari pakora. Crispy, tasty..not rubbery. Butter chicken was full of flavor with a lot of sauce. I love saag paneer it was cooked to perfection. Definitely plan to come back

I ordered the Tikka Masala and this meal did not disappoint. The flavors were masterful with just the right amount of spice, and the rice was done right and a perfect compliment. I ordered some Naan bread as well, which was also delicious with the flavor sealed in. The service was quick, polite and helpful as they just opened and I had a few questions. Will be back to see satisfy my Indian cravings.

Not only one of the BEST Indian restaurants in San Francisco, its amazingly affordable with its creative menu and superb craft cocktails. Wife had a refreshing Baga Beach and I ended up ordering two Smoke & Honeys with mescal, scotch, lillet, lemon and honey. WOW! Grill choices included lamb chops, kebabs, black tiger shrimp and salmon all marinated for over 24 hours. The large portioned lamb shank had just enough heat and sauce to sop up every drop with the garlic nan bread. The butter chicken masala also hit 5 star with a choice of 3 different levels of heat. Plates kept coming, including lentil soup and a coconut vegetable curry. Besides an extensive bar and wine choices, they make their own beer and the tank is prominently displayed in the center of the decorative restaurant. This is a must visit, especially with a daily happy hour until 6 pm!

Castro Indian Restaurant & Bar is a beautiful restaurant located in the heart of the Castro with a great outdoor seating area. When you walk in the vibe is extremely an elegant type of feel with the glass chandeliers and yellow booths that shine. The manager Binod and owner AJ and Arun were all very welcoming and entertaining. They showed us their own brewery of Blondie Ale which tasted very light and smooth. My coworkers and I ordered an array of food. Every dish that came out was exquisitely a masterpiece and so tasty. My favorite was the chicken Tikka Masala and it was to die for. Also the Tandoori chicken, lamb, and Dosa was super delicious. This is a great place to check out and enjoy. Wonderful experience.

Excellent! Flavorful, fresh food . I believe that every dish here, along with every condiment and side, are made fresh from scratch every day. Attentive, very polite service. All the dishes I tried was awesome . They are always happy to customize a dish, and by default, they dont serve overly-spicy food. But if you like it spicy, or any other special way, just ask and they will do it for you. In my opinion, Castro Indian Restaurant & Bar is one of the best restaurant in the bay area and certainly the best I have found in San Francisco area as far as the quality of food, cleanliness, and service.

My favorite restaurant and bar in sf by far. I try to come in weekly to try out the various dishes. The menu is diverse and the food here is great. The servers and bartenders are friendly and provide great recommendations for food/drinks. The restaurant also brew its own beer which has great taste and makes it authentic. Visited the Castro area while in San Fran, four brits on our holidays. It was lunchtime when we visited, the restaurant was empty at the time which took us back at bit but we continued. The decor is delighful and gives the assurance that these owners care about their customers experience. We ordered and were surprised with the ample size and delicious fare that was presented before us. The Mixed Grill was especially good at a very reasonable price also. I get the impression that if this cafe was positioned on the other side of the street it would be packed with customers all the time. The San Franciscoers need to try this place and get it buzzing during the day, its what it deserves. Thanks for the experience.
