This place is great. Its a self serve, quick dine kind of setup with curry being the star here. They have sides as well like fries, kara-age and a few other things but they serve curry first and foremost. If you have a craving for Japanese curry, give them a try next time youre browsing!

The curry dish I ordered was of a Japanese-style, and it contained some diced beef with a predominantly salty taste. I drank several glasses of water to counteract the saltiness. I ordered the curry pork dish, which had a crunchy exterior and a tender interior. The accompanying side dish was diced tomatoes. The price for the meal was around $15, with a self-service checkout system and no option for leaving a tip. The fries served with the dish were standard and did not have any standout features.

Ive had a difficult time finding local restaurants that have Japanese curry that I like. So imagine my joy when I find Champions, which happens to have good curry and happens to be right around the corner from my other favorite Japanese curry place (Muraccis).The food was all good. We ordered katsu curry, hamburg plate and a salad, along with egg/macaroni salad and sausage sides. Would definitely order again.The inside setup in a practical way (the way youd expect a restaurant near a university to be). Online order for pickup was easy and straight forward.

Excellent pork cutlet slices appropriately as of taste comes through. Panko is real not typical American version. Curry is different but very good..

So glad this is open in Berkeley! We’ve tried their curry and sandwiches and have loved both! We even came here twice in one week (during their soft opening)! Curry flavor and katsu quality are top notch!

For pork katsu curry rice only. The pork is not tender. Rice is sticky. Curry is a bit spicy, but not really attractive.

I got the chicken curry which was about $17. It was good, but I wouldn’t get it again. The chicken was nice and tender though. I wasn’t that impressed for the price so I probably won’t come back.

This is one of the best japanese curry that Ive had in the bay. We went back to try the fish curry (not in this pic) and it was the best. All the other options are amazing as well!

Extremely yummy! chicken katsu was not dry & the salad was fresh! yummy sauces too. new spot & very accessible! (Single level floor, tables are spaced out, large gender neutral bathroom). will come again to try out other menu items 😋

Once again, I love the Japanese concept of self service. Order yourself, seat yourself, get your own water. No need for tipping.The foods is awesome and as authentic as you can get away from Japan. I love the Curry, and the spice level is just right. While the prices are bit high, thats to be expected. I hope these authentic Japanese restaurants are successful and stay open. I will support them as much as I can.This place alone has me thinking of visiting Kanazawa someday. I am extremely impressed, and I will return for sure.

Found my new favorite Japanese curry place! For 10+ years my favorite was Muracci’s Curry, but sadly their curry flavor has changed over the years… I even asked to talk to the owner and tell him, but he said it has been the same. Given that Japanese curry is one of my favorite dishes and there was no better alternative, I just kept going there and kept getting serve disappointment.Fast forward to the day this place opened up and I haven’t gotten curry anywhere since. I have gotten their chicken katsu curry, katsu curry, and hamburger curry and they are all great because The curry sauce is great lol.I wish they offer brown rice and veggies along with their dish, but being in college city no one cares about that so 🤷🏻‍♂️

If you value your time and sanity, you might look elsewhere. This all boils down to training, the upper management not training their employees well enough, and so that the system in place is very very inefficient, I dont blame any of the employees, 100% of the issue is from management. The lack of employee training and a good efficient system in place will be the issue less people eat at this specific location.We got there at 6:45pm (15 minutes before close, I also understand that we were cutting it close and take responsibility for that part). The Toast tab in-person ordering system was down, so that was already causing some chaos for customers and behind the counter, we stood at the window for about 5 minutes before someone acknowledged us and told us the system was down. Order was placed at 6:53pm (per my email timestamp). This whole time there were maybe 5-10 people waiting at the counter and the 3 employees were busy working in the back, running around like headless chickens, kind of scrambling to do things, but not successful in getting orders out. I flagged down an employee (she had good attitude), politely inquired about how long it would roughly take was told 15-20 minutes. So at this point, we were expecting to get back around 7:20pm. We come back, the same people + new ones were waiting at the window.The South Asian employee (who was nice and speaks great Japanese) checked in with people for their order number occasionally. There were 3 employees working, two of the ladies were scrambling and working trying to get orders out, the third male employee was just hovering around not doing much. Whoever checked in was the person who got their order, however, of the last 10 or so orders I saw go out, NONE, I repeat NONE were correct, every single order had something missing. The lucky first person who got their order warned everyone Be sure to double check your orders people. I get my chance and get to the window, the employee checks with me my order number, comes back and tells me we need another 10-15 minutes for the Hamburger, I am wondering what has been going on for the past 45mins-1hour... I check back in again, a different employee (who is also very apologetic and nice), tells me oh sorry we need another 10-15 minutes for the Hamburger, we only put 1 on. There is nothing I can do but wait, because the employees are not trained to work the system to issue refunds. Our order is finally called. I double check my order, since everyone else had issues with theirs, lo and behold, I am missing a whole double-double Hamburger. There is no way for them to fire up the grill again because it was closing time. I asked for a refund on the order, as I was out of patience, we had been waiting for over 1.5 hours, and our order wasnt even complete! They were apologetic, offered a free coke for the wait. Which seemed pretty insulting for a lack of a better process that delayed our food by over 1.5 hours. The employee promised to get me a refund, so she called one of the managers and informed them and also gave me the number of the General Manager - Dai Echi.I called at 11:30am, when they open, spoke to the same employee who helped us yesterday, Dai Echi was not in yet, I asked her to have Dai Echi call me when he gets in around 1pm-2pm. I guess she forgot as I never got a call around that time. I ended up calling back at 4:10pm, and this time I was told Dai Echi was at a coffee shop, and to call back in 20 minutes. So I call back and eventually get to speak with the GM. He informs me the refund is processed on their end, and when I wanted to offer him some constructive feedback of our experience, he seemed super impatient and said ok, and then once I started talking, he put the phone down on the counter. I could still hear the noise in the background. This was actually the worst of it all. Atleast hear your customer out, the feedback is always valuable! The less management listens, the less likely the company is to succeed.I will never be dining here again.

I highly recommend the chicken katsu rice. The chicken is extremely tender and sops up the generous serving of curry well.I also tried the pork katsu rice which was flavorful, though the pork cutlet was a bit tough / overcooked, especially compared to the chicken.Ill be back to try their katsu sammiches next time!
