It appears to be one of those Chinese restaurants that have been around for a long while, and it has. I ate here previously a few years ago, and it was because of that experience that I decided to have another go. This experience turned out differently because I ordered something other than what I had intended. Because they had Sambal Oelek and soy sauce as condiments, I noticed they had an old favorite on the menu - BBQ Pork with egg over rice. Lets just say that for me, this is a winning combination, and it worked well in this case. Although this dish is common, many places usually dont have sambal oelek, or chili oil, which can liven up any plain dish. Otherwise, this place is a nice, small Chinese restaurant that serves good food.

Not so many Chinese restaurants outside Oakland Chinatown that rate a review. Yes, many around UCB campus that crush Chinatown. Ok, Chens Garden is now on my speed dial. I will order dinner again and would like to dine in. Dining area very clean and many tables for singles or families. I like Chens Garden, would you update or give them your review? Good appetite

This is a place you come to for convenience and decent food. Its not one you make a trip from crosstown to eat. The food is cheap and good. I live in the neighborhood and this is the place I go to when I have a craving for Chinese food and dont want to travel far. I usually order the beef chow fun. They have a buffet style display for combination plates. There is seating for Dine-in as well. There isnt much of an atmosphere. Its your hole-in-the-wall kind of decor but its clean. Street parking is usually available.

Been coming here for years and the prices have definitely gone up too high for the portions and quality of the food you receive. Chicken fried rice used to be one of my favorites but it’s skimpy on the egg and veggies and chicken is in huge chunks that needs to be smaller and the same thing for the chow mein. I ordered fried prawns and OMG they were twice fried and was dry and horrible. Basically they didn’t sell them earlier and when I ordered them they fried them again EWWW!! I didn’t notice it till I got home. I’m gonna be looking for me a new Chinese food spot.

Have ordered here since the old owners. The food prices are the same, dont know why everyone is complaining about the food price. And they are doing special events for dry-fried ribs recently which I recommend personally. The new owners did not change the price and the menus on the board.The food tasted good, it changed a little bit but not in a bad way. They always give me extra as I come here often and are kind.

Pretty good food. Excellent dry fried ribs and easy access to a side parking lot for pick up or dine in. Lunch special options available or you can just order a variety of meal options.

More then fair prices. Large amount of food for the price!Asian lady who works all the time is amazing and never makes mistakes! If I could find perfect one like her I would be so happy for life!Food is amazing.Please dont waste time... Order the salt and pepper shrimp or the salt and pepper fish!Ask for sweet and sour sauce. You will be most happy!

Not the fanciest. Not the showiest. Only doing take-out since the pandemic.But an extensive menu selection. A friendly, damily-owned operation. Delicious food and ample servings. Especially convenient for me, as I reside only a few blocks away. I can either call in an order, or enter it online, and by the time I stroll up there, its just about ready for me!

I love this place, come here to grab lunch probably once a week. The garlic green beans are so good, and I enjoy their fried rice and basically all the salt and pepper entrees. Combo meals are extremely competitively priced. Just all around fantastic place.

First visit for take out. Ive driven by this place for years and always think I wonder how the food is? Its my kinda place. Not fancy, mom and pop, take out only. There are not many close by options in the neighborhood for good Chinese food. PF changs is great but $20 for an order of fried rice? Pfft.I ordered egg foo young, fried rice and pot stickers. Its a ton of food and very tasty! So glad I FINALLY gave this place a try!

I’ve lived in Berkeley/North Oakland my whole life and had never been to this hidden gem! They were delicious and the food was very fresh especially the garlic green beans. They were seasoned so good and very crunchy. The service was fast as well. Prices are reasonable as well. I’m looking forward to trying something else next time. My order this time included the general Taos chicken fried rice and green beans, salt and pepper fish chow Mein sweet and sour chicken and veggies. Everything was a 10! Coming back soon

Food was delicious. Even with covid restrictions was able to place order outside and was done within 10 minutes.. orange chicken was delicious. Beef broccoli had huge chunks of beef and broccoli wasnt too tough not to soft just perfect... Will recommend and may use again while Im down here with my daughter in icu. Plus being just a few blocks from hospital made it definitely the choice to get

Been going to Chens for many years and although I have moved out of the area, I had an appointment that brought me close. I ordered the dry fried pork ribs and they are as good as I remember, with slices of jalapeño and chopped green onion.

Very expensive for low quality food left in warmers for hours waiting to be served in very small portions. Also the several members of the family running the restaurant are very rude. They want you hurry up and order take your food and leave. The interior is small and dingy, not cozy or inviting. Its obvious people only come here because its the only Chinese food place within walking distance of the area. Dont waste your time or money for such poor service and small portions of sub par food. You can get much better food and service for a better price for a few minutes extra traveling-to literally ANY other place.

I cant believe anyone would give this place even an average rating. Id seen it for years, always thought it looked suspect, but went in today. There were assorted trays of food on an aluminum steaming table, most nearly empty and looking like theyd been sitting there for hours if not days. I ordered three items and it was, without the doubt, the worst Chinese food Ive ever had. Broccoli that had been sitting so long it had the texture of green mush, and every single thing had only one flavor--salt. I ate just enough of it to feel a little sick an hour later. I offered it to my dog and he wouldnt touch it. Jesus.

We live close by and order take-out from here all the time. The food is good - the people are so nice. Sure its not as good as some of the higher priced places in Elmwood but I think the quality is great given how reasonable their prices are.

I really like this place for take-out. I will admit that the decor is not great but the people are nice and willing to make changes and substitutions to meet peoples requests. And the food is pretty good too.

Don’t even go there to eat because the food is so terrible I ordered sweet-and-sour pork they gave me yesterday food I ordered shrimp fried rice they gave me white rice with a little soy sauce with the Shrimp meat about seven of them to a whole order to charge me 1195 pork egg Freon was thin as a thin pancake terrible shouldn’t even be in business so disappointment and they have food in the warmers all day long
