Serene and beautiful. Peacocks will greet you upon arrival. Make sure to simply sign in at the main office. You’re allowed to take photos inside of the main hall, but no video is allowed. Please dress appropriately and do not disturb the bowing/chanting procession.

Stop here and pay respect to one of the most amazing traditions and religions. Was impressed to find such an incredible city hidden in this small town. You feel transported to the Far East once you cross its gates. The temple of the Ten Thousand Buddhas is worth a visit. I was there on a Sunday during a chanting ceremony. Lots of practicing Buddhists and Monks were there. Very peaceful and mystical. Such an oasis of calm, peace and tranquility tucked in the hills of Northern California.

This is a large Buddhist religious campus. It is worth visiting to see the many Buddhas in the temple, as well as the grounds. Most of the buildings on the ground show signs of wear as you might expect in a very large campus. We stopped for a Jyun Kang vegetarian restaurant lunch. The food was flavorful, however not what you might expect in Chinatown in San Francisco. If you are near Ukiah, I would definitely recommend visiting.

Complete.serenity. Driving in you are welcomed by beautiful peacocks. The grounds were quiet, check in was quick and informative. The only building available that day was the Temple of 10,000 Buddhas. You are not required to remove your shoes😊. The whole temple is wall to wall gold Buddhas encased in glass. Tables in foyer full of literature, cookbooks, free to take. This location is the World Headquarters. Very peaceful, pleasant visit. FYI, the vegetarian restaurant closes at 3pm daily.

We visited this place in the way back from fort Bragg. To keep it simple, it is a great place to be, see and meditate if you want. The Buddha hall is great to see with lots of idols, their is spiritual ceremony between 12.30 to 1.30pm everyday, and the vegetarian restaurant is also great.They had some good books for free to pickup but you can put some donation in the box if you want.

Very interesting. Seemed very open to visitors. The bookstore was closed when we visited but we did enjoy the grounds, the peacocks, and a ceremony. Be sure to visit the hall and all of the statues. It is beautiful.

East of Ukiah, at the end of Talmage road, a giant gate welcomes you to the city. Visitors must register at the administration building. The day we were there we were the only visitors. The city occupies several hundred acres that used to be a California State Hospital. The temple used to be an indoor basketball court - but you would never recognize it as such now. BEAUTIFUL. The vegetarian resturant is a must visit.

This is charming buddhist monastery that we ended up visiting on our way to Mendocino. The place was very peaceful and calm and I loved the gardens around the main meditation floor. There were so many peacocks around, it was amazing to see this beautiful bird with all its feathers. The meditation area itself is a bit strict and conservative. We were scolded for inadvertently ringing a small bell even though there was no one else in the hall. I think its a good stop especially if you are out here to check out the best Chinese restaurant I have ever been to, Jyun Kang

It is a unique experience to visit the site. A Chan Buddhist monastery and community that is laid out as a campus. It is the only one I have seen with both nuns and monks. I was there for lunch at the vegan restaurant, Jyun Kang. Great food with my favorite being the curry soup Then I stopped by the auditorium turned temple to watch chanting in The Jeweled Hall Of 10,000 Buddhas.

This is kind of an amazing place to visit near Ukiah California. Not only do they actually have 10,000 Buddha statues in their temple, but there is a great little vegetarian restaurant on the grounds of this once military hospital.

Really neat place. Not anything I was expecting to find tucked away into the NorCal woods.The grounds are mostly closed to visitors, but one can walk around the temple, gardens and restaurant. The admin building allows visitors entry to the gallery (place to learn about the site) and the bookstore.The temple is open to visitors and photos are allowed word Dharma talks are not on session, but taking pictures still felt a bit disrespectul as there are worshippers meditating.With the stop 2 miles from Hwy 101.

I lived on Mill Creek Rd in 1961 in the summer.... not long. There was a State Hospital right in the area of this temple. I was wondering if this temple is in the same location, as that Hospital had a bad reputation of a lot of abuse, and closed. Going east as you go up the hill in the woods, on Mill Creek Rd there were a couple of reservoirs as you head in to the Cow Mountain Recreational area. The first and largest one of them, people would swim in them back them Camped there once with cub scouts then with my brother. We would see salamanders come up to the surface then dive back down. I remember them as being orange in color. People were swimming and going off rope swings on the other side of that reservoir that were tied to trees, when I was last there in August 1978. Very neat area. The dam there looks gated off to people now. Saftey thing Im sure.Going there this June 23.

I try to come here annually during Lunar New Years as they have celebrations and Buddhist monks here chanting. Many tourists alike will visit and wish for well being etc. I love seeing all the peacocks flocking around. Such a lovely temple with such generosity to the public.

FYI the front entrance was closed because of construction. You have to turn right just before it. Just make sure you turn right just before it otherwise you will be going somewhere else. There is a restaurant in there but the food was just ok for me, also it is closed on Tuesdays. After 6pm you are not allowed in the city. I am not a vegan but I have eaten at other vegan places and the taste of what I ate there was just ok. Someone I was with paid to stay there for the three week course but there was no heat on the dorm. She caught a cold and she had to leave a few days later. The food that they serve you also is not easy to eat. One has to be willing to leave a monks life, otherwise this is not the place for most people who are used the life of a major US city.

A really interesting and serene place to visit. Most of the buildings are western turn-of-the-century style, making it look a lot more like a university than a Buddhist temple. The interior of the main temple hall is beautiful and decorated with the eponymous ten thousand Buddhas.

I have never felt such a strong spiritual presence. Just walking around the beautiful grounds makes you feel at peace. The main temple with 10,000 Buddhas was absolutely astonishing. I picked up some free reading material and I can’t wait to go back soon. There’s also a college there with students who live on the Campus who studies the life and teachings of Buddhism.

A place for you to practice spirituality. Interfaith. Open to public during daytime. They have weeklong retreats available but you will need to register prior. My favorite place to stay and figure out the twists and turns of life. A unique and very large Buddhist Community, open to welcome visitors 7 days a week. The onsite public restaurant is remarkable and deserves your attention. Totally delicious, eaily-digestible vegan fare. There is an appealing museum at the Adminstration building. In the same building is a bookstore with Buddhist literature and collectibles. I have stayed there many times as a layperson and consider myself incredibly lucky to have encountered the Master who started this City and his many sincere disciples. They will welcome you very warmly. Men and women are requested to dress modestly out of repect for the community of celebate monks and nuns. You may also observe or participate in tradtional Chinese worship services, and/or attend a lecture on Buddhism given in both English and Chinese.

Home to the 1972 decommissioned insane asylum Mendicino State hospital. Most people who roam here are seekers of truth. But there is no truth in madness. This place bares the scars of that asylum. Monastic living is the pursuit of perfection that can never be attained and the people here bow to a man long since passed. The vows of utterselflessness cant be fulfilled by isolating yourself. This property is an interesting exploration into the dance of pointlessness that I found to be curious and sad. A monk is a servant but they seem to exalt themselves on mountains of sutras and books galore. I will be returning to dialogue with a monk on the strang way of life these people live in Hopes of finding out why so many people are infatuated with this system of thought. As a philosophy its dully noted, but as a system of soul surrendering, bow elsewhere.

Strictly speaking, it is not a Bay Area. It is 110 miles away from San Francisco and is located in the town of Damo in Mendiciano County. I first heard about this place because I accidentally found out that Fei Yuqings sister had practiced practice here, and I learned that this Buddhist city is one of the largest Buddhist groups in the Western Hemisphere. According to the official website, The Holy City of Ten Thousand Buddhas covers an area of about 700 acres. There is a Hall of Ten Thousand Buddhas in the city, which houses a standing statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva with Thousand Arms and Thousand Eyes... There are also various buildings and schools in the city, with a total of seven More than a dozen large buildings. If you are driving to Northern California, you can stop by.
