Nice place in La Mesa. Vegetarian options, nice sides, and drinks. Sangria is tasty. Dj on the back patio some nights. Good and fast service. Salsa bar is a nice touch. Diverse menu pleases most people. 10 percent off tacos on Tuesdays.

The fish tacos were just okay, the elote was also just okay. Tacos were a bit too sour and had too much chopped lettuce. Elote was kinda strong, but that may just be elote in general. Theres lots of seating and the prices are good. Something interesting is theres a sowing machine inside the bathroom LOL.

The tacos we had were all right, not terrible, but nothing amazing either. Would go back to try other flavors of tacos. Was a bit disappointed that there wasn’t a full bar. But the service was great and quick and sitting outside was lovely.

City Tacos is a great restaurant if youre looking for tacos in the La Mesa area. They have quite a few different varieties of tacos and theyre all delicious. The tacos are a little expensive but they definitely dont hold back on meat or other ingredients, so you get what you pay for. The thing I love most are their sauces. They have a few different aioli-type sauces that are absolutely heavenly and pair with the tacos so well. They also have a good few varieties of beer if youre looking to have a drink as well!

Tried a couple of different tacos today. Pretty meh especially considering the price. The fish taco was really gross both my boyfriend and I tried it and both of us spit it out. New to La Mesa really hoping this isn’t what people here consider to be good food.

Im saving the reason I finally wrote this review for last. The thing I should have realized all along, and a dream come true, that I never knew I had. Lets get to the point though, City Tacos makes you thankful that you are living in the year 2022 on planet earth in San Diego, Ca... because, TACOS! and THESE TACOS!!Ive come here about twice a week for the past year. I work 1-1/2 minutes away. Its one of the first spots that comes to mind when I tell friends lets meet for lunch. Ive taken photos of probably every meal Ive ordered there, even still now! Theyre beautiful and the tacos are soOoOO Good! Just this week, I texted a few friends a pic of me having City Tacos to remind them where they werent eating . The rest of the day, I received texts saying Im craving City Tacos soo bad - yea! They are that amazing!I always recommend getting the taco of the month and even though my friends and I fall into our favorite tacos naturally, we always want to change it up, because every taco delivers something uniquely different.Okay! Okay! The epiphany and the reason i finally wrote a review. We stumbled in on a day where we met the owner... after seeing him in action, I felt compelled to write this. He was so passionate about getting the next taco of the month to be just right. We were watching him, we started talking to him, and he was excited! He clearly wanted to make something great, like wow! His team too, they were in on it together! So fun to watch! Then, he wanted us in on the fun and asked us to taste-test the options for next months tacos. Yea, WE WERE CITY TACOS TASTE TESTERS!! Are these happy tears coming down my face as I write?! I didnt even know I had this dream.. and just like that, a bucket list item checked off my list. Life.is.complete! So, why are City Tacos so good? It starts with a passionate artist chef inviting his community to work toward something beautiful and &%$^& delicious! (Thats an ad-lib, you get to choose the adjective after your next taco!)All that to say, in hindsight, and Every.Single.Time. I meet the people behind the food... you see why its so incredibly perfect, because the people that made it are passionate, awesome, thoughtful, intentional, and full of heart! Their imagination and love shines through them, and its found within each flavor of the taco. The world is a better place.

+ The vegan portobello tacos were absolutely delicious. Very thick & juicy.+ I like the juice they sell at the front. You can taste that they dont put pounds of sugar in it.- The guacamole with chips was ok.- Grilled chicken taco was alright. Meat was a little dry & tough. Just a little..+ They have outside seating in the front & back of Restaurant..+ The staff was very nice & helpful..+ Overall, this was a good experience. Went to LaMesa with the wife to grab a bite to eat. While waiting to find a spot to park, a gentleman approached our car and asked if we are looking for spot? We replied yes, he said to eat or park? We said both. He pointed to City tacos and said he would highly recommend this place. My wife and I agreed to try it out. We ordered a variety of tacos. We had a Caritas, surf and turf, pescado, mexicali and a portobello taco. Also ordered their agua fresca, they has pineapple and watermelon. All the tacos were amazing. The pescado taco was my favorite. It was topped with strawberry slices and drizzled with strawberry habanero jam. The salsa selection is great as well but I have to give it to their mango habanero salsa. I will definitely be back to try their other menu items.

Out with my sister. We are eating city tacos. I had the carnitas tacos 3 different styles. I will admit the pork belly taco is bomb delicious. Thank u city tacos. Had a truly fruit punch in a glass with a tajin rim, very lip smacking good .

I was surprised at the combination of ingredients. Delicious. For 50c more then the delicious pollo asada taco, the upgraded pollo asada taco was amazing! The fish taco seemed to have a horse radish flavor to it, so if your not interested in that, or if you have the kids with you, you might ask for the sauce on the side to give it a try. The staff was polite and the strawberry juice was another unexpected treat... Overall, excellent.

The food is awesome. Their tortilla is fresh, soft and taste really good. We had carnitas tacos and carne asada tacos. Very very good! This is a family business and you can feel the love and passion they have and share. The brother taking the orders was so nice and made everyone feel so welcome and made friends with everyone that walked in the door. I would recommend this to families and this would be a great place to meet friends to eat and drink.

Interesting tacos and a nice ambiance. They also have a small selection of Mexican craft beer from Tijuana and Ensenada, mostly in bottles, but sometimes on draft. Their staff is always pleasant and willing to offer recommendations for food and beer.

Great tacos overall. Shank You, Scallop Dream, and Carne Asada were great. The meat on the Surf and Turf was a little dry. Some were spicy even though they werent marked as such on the menu. It was fine for me, but if you dont like spicy food, you might want to ask.

Hubby and I where walking through the town looking for a new place for us to eat! Walked past this place and decided to give it a try!! We where not disappointed at all!!I got two tacos on jicama, I had the surf n turf and the mahi it was delicious!!Hubs got three tacos had the surf n turf, and Mexicali he loved it.. and the pollo city taco he said was good, but just not for him.. he didnt care for the arugula.. but the chicken flavor was delicious..

Everything was perfect. we went near closing and it was clean and service was good. every taco was creative and delicious.the restaurant is larger than it looks from the outside and has a lovely back patio that looks like a hippies back yard in a good way.the bathroom was nice and had nice hot water for handwashing.

Great tacos. Long line. Have to pay for water. The inside reeks of Lysol. Hard to enjoy the delicious tacos when every breath is a waft of Lysol. It’s like trying to eat in a gas station bathroom.Also kind of sucks to spend $40 and leave hungry.

I was not hyped by the tacos today. For the price, the tacos were really small and not at all filling. This restaurant was located close to many pubs and other restaurants in Downtown La Mesa. Ordered a scalloped taco for $6 and got a soupy almost flat taco and could not taste nor find any scallops in it, it felt a little wierd eating it. Also had the quesadilla which was folded in a soft shell. Also had the fish (cod) taco where the fish was really tiny. Didnt get full at all for $6 a taco. Not sure if I would be returning to downtown again as there are so many other choices.

Tacos were generally small, Would appeal better if the Tacos are slightly bigger, fuller (even if its more cabbage & diced tomatoes!) ..i had the fried smoked tuna taco, not good, very tough tort shell after frying, fish overcooked inside the tough fried corn tortilla. Chicken taco was OK,& tasty, & like I mentioned a bit small. Personable & friendly staff, very accommodating. Id suggest fountain drinks as well, most of us like a nice iced soda or iced tea. Had a good selection of bottled beers & draft craft brews, plus some wine by the glass. Salsa/condiment bar was well stocked, Good, tasty seasoned salsas. Its worth another trip one day.

Ive eaten at City Tacos in North Park and really enjoyed it. This one didnt seem to be as good. The taco didnt have much flavor and the tortilla was dry and broke apart easily. My coworkers with me didnt think there was much flavor to their meat or sauces either. Service was good, food could use some tips from the North Park location.

Recommended by a mentor as a good place to eat, close to my residence, a friend and I went to experience it for ourselves. We were happy to be so lucky as to find a slot right in front, and one should expect to find metered parking in this area, as you would at the Gaslamp. There was quite a long line, which increased our good expectations of the place, with so many people waiting to order. When it was our turn, the man who took our order looked unenthused, at best. I mentioned it was our first time there and asked if they were able to omit a certain ingredient, to which he impatiently replied with a flat-no. Then, my friend and I specifically asked about the portion size, referring to how large each ala carte order was. We wanted to make sure we ordered enough for us both. Distracted by this point, he rudely said that the entrees we ordered were enough for us (we ordered 1 entree each-the surf and turf and carne asada), and we BOTH heard him clearly state each order came with 3 wraps (or rolls, cant recall the exact name of the tortilla served style). When our order came, they each were served on the smallest size paper tray Ive ever seen (half of a pound capacity). Each order was just ONE small tortilla wrap with what we had ordered on top. Imagine the order you get at most other taco places you frequent, but miniature size. When we finally were able to wave down a server to ask about the 3 we were told each order had, the server told us that that was the order, even going on to say that they were even on special that night. If he was trying to convince us we should have been happy to be getting lied to, and then ripped off-because we were getting ripped off a little less than we would have been any other day there because we ordered the special, well, it wasnt a very effective marketing ploy. I mentioned to him, too, that it was our first time there and he shook his head with a smile and shrugged his shoulders. We were honestly, just dumbfounded. It wouldnt have been a big deal for us to order enough that would satisy each of us, that is why we specifically asked about portion sizes, being out first time there. What really bothered us was that we were mislead about the size of each entree, obviously to justify the amount we were paying up front. Then, when we brought up the indiscrepancy by bringing it up to the server, we were basically told there was nothing that could be done about it. Even busier restaurants that we have visited Downtown, or at the beach areas have made accommodations in the past to make us feel like our business was wanted. Its just good customer service. Not even expecting excellence... Just good.

Hands down the worst dining experience Ive ever had. Hair in my taco, new taco was cold. Literally had one shrimp in the taco and the workers didnt even apologize. Guacamole had zero flavor. Ive first ate at City Tacos at their North Park location and this La Mesa store has the same high quality tacos from there. Ive visited this location four times, twice at night and twice during the day, it is a wonderful restaurant to eat at and hang out with friends. This isnt a cheap taco shop to buy tacos or carne asada chips, the tacos here are higher priced but feel about 1.5 to 2x bigger than than typical street tacos. Three or four tacos plus a draft beer should set you back $16 to $25 depending what you get. The tacos here are perfect, I really love the Borrego taco w/ Lamb & the Portobello Mushroom taco they are my favorites. Especially on the Portobello taco, I have been hooked how they make it, plus the corn, & cotija cheeses toppings gives faint tastes of an elote.The tacos arent overly filled up but I always seem to spill some extra out when halfway done. What I love about the menu is how they have icons to help you with you decide; spicy, paleo, vegetarian, & what kind of tortilla it comes with. There are about 19 tacos available and they have a specialized taco every so often. You have to order sides, there doesnt seem to be a combo kind of meal when you order tacos.Coming here for food should amp you up, it has a lively atmosphere, with upbeat pop tunes from the 80s to now & very attentive employees taking your order and serving you tacos. It is a very hip place and happening place, so if youre expecting something more quiet, or having a strategic boring by the numbers business meeting wouldnt recommend it. If youre looking to start the fun nightlife somewhere, Taco Tuesdays here can ignite it with a live DJ mixing in an assortment of genres, you wont miss it if youre navigating with your ears. Though Im not sure if there are DJs here every night, I would assume there are on Friday or Saturday.They dont have a large selection of beers on tap, four craft beers and they got an assortment of bottles to drink to make up for it. The salsa bar is full of selections and never have I seen any condiments look like theyve ever been sitting outside for too long where they dry up. There is parking in the rear and you can enter thru there as it leads to the patio where it has a small bar. Outside seating is nice at night as they have outdoor heating and the building does block some of the wind. City Tacos got my attention at the original location in North Park and the La Mesa location keeps the high standard.

Ehh, not good honestly. That sauces seemed pretty good but I got the fish tacos and they were soggy, not crispy. They also got my order wrong. I had their breakfast taco and the chorizo didn’t have any flavor. It’s so weird how people always talk about this place around la mesa but it’s honestly not that good. The atmosphere is cool but it’s honestly terrible tacos. Probably won’t ever go there again.

Really terrific range of taco options, with a much broader variety of meats and taco accompaniments.Walked in to order take out, so cannot comment much on the interior or dining space, though at a glance it looked comfortable. Food was prepared fast and thoughtfully packaged to separate the tacos within the box.I ordered four tacos, which was the perfect amount coming in hungry. I asked the staff member at the counter for recommendations and ended up with the Camaron Enchilado, Mexicali, Shank You, and Chorizo Asado tacos. They were all terrific, awesome flavors, nice portions (though the shrimp taco could have used a fourth shrimp to fill out the taco). The baked in cheese was delicious. All of the tacos were under $5 and were filling and flavorful. Would definitely return to try some other options on the menu.

Instead of trying to help me with the menu, he tried to make me feel stupid and it was intentionally I have no idea why. The tacos are some of the tastiest around. They are perhaps not the most traditional with ingredients like almonds and pomegranate in some tacos, but they are delicious gourmet style creations. There are a ton of veggie options. Two tacos are more than enough for most people. I struggled with this score between 4 and 5 stars because, even though the food is top notch, the atmosphere doesnt match. It isnt bad, perse but very basic. Also tacos are served to you more like cheap street tacos, in paper baskets. Their salsa bar has a lot of varieties, but it is always trashed by other patrons, and often running low. Nice little place. Different street tacos and they had a special of the month which was a chilierono. Was very good. As I sat there they started to get busy. The staff was nice food got to me fast.

I love the portobello taco and veggie frijoles. It’s nice to have vegetarian options. I think if you get it without cheese it’s vegan. Still really good, too!

We were looking forward to trying their vegan portabello tacos, but when we opened the box at home, there was dairy cheese all over the tacos, as well as the guac! Major disappointment. And time wasted. They say the vegan option is available on the menu, but apparently dont understand what that means ... when we called to give feedback, they tried to tell us it was vegan cheese. It was definitely not the case - it was clearly not. Evidently, not a recommended spot for plant-based tacos. :(

This is my favorite taco place. The birria taco is amazing. Its a Guadalajara style beef stew and is so tender. The agua Jamaica is absolutely amazing. They also sometimes have a pineapple drink and cucumber mint spinach but Jamaica is my jam.Their salsa bar is very good but I find myself not using it because the tacos have enough flavor and are already super juicy.

Ive been a few times, finally got to go again tonight as outside dining has resumed. There are heaters placed outside next to the tables, perfect for the chilly weather. This time I ordered a Chile Relleno taco and Camaraon Enchilado taco. Both were delish, per usual. Also ordered guac and chips which was a little underwhelming in portion size for the price but still good. To drink, got a Michelada (my first ever) with a Modelo (they let you choose the beer) and was so good!

Great variety of quality tacos and even better service. Food came out fairly quick despite how busy they were. I enjoyed the Mexicali, Borrega and Surf and Turf. Will definitely go back to try the other tacos.

The Carne Asada taco was delish, as was the Beef in Green Chili sauce taco. They have awesome Mexican-style corn on the cob...butter/mayo/cotija cheese with a squeeze of lime....Delish! The service was great. They have a nice staff.

The food is solid, but nothing super special. There are plenty of other places not far away where you can get the same food experience at a more affordable price. Not my first choice when in the The Village, but if a friend wanted to come here, I would be fine returning.

Ok I came in wanting to dislike this place. I was the chef of the restaurant that was in that location before, and I guess I was still bitter that it didnt work. Over time I got over it and came in. Im glad I did.I ordered the Al Pastor and the Carnitas tacos. The Al Pastor had great favor and was quite filling. The Carnitas taco was incredible, perfect combo of soft and crunchy. What made it all were the tortillas, they are amazing.I have to say I was blown away by this place. Great job you guys!

Update Nov 2020: no longer available is the usual salsa bar items of cucumbers, Jalapenos cilantro...understably the salsa bar is closed due to pandemic, but theyre being cheap and not providing this stuff at all.Previous review:Prices raised recently, by big %. Food is great, but now a bad value proposition. Prolly ending my patronage, and Ive been coming since they took over the failed noodle joint.

This taco place is really good. I am used to other spots that offer more traditional TJ tacos. The biggest difference I would say is City Tacos has a wider variety of food and taco types. Other places are heavy and a bit more fatty/greasy. My wife loves this place for their fish tacos and the other night we were able to get a lobster taco. She again loved it. I am more of the meat person so I typically will get the carne asada and the chicken tacos. Both are really good. This place is definitely worth the visit with an awesome atmosphere especially in the back. They have a covered patio seating area which has a foosball table and some interesting lighting. Their handmade tortillas are on point as well so I you enjoy a good homemade tortilla then check this place out.

Nestled into a quaint small-town downtown setting in La Mesa, is a hidden gem. Whenever i meet someone headed to SD(Which is quite often) i recommend Mexican food, specifically taco stand style. This spot mixes plated modern design, with authentic San Ysidro stand feel for a delicious presentation. Tried the Carnitas with 2 pieces of Chicharron for added cruch, the Surf and Turf( shrimp and steak, although not Carne Asada, tender and flavorful), and my favorite the Pescado, with fried Mahi, strawberries, bean sprouts and more. Only point to give, hot sauce could have been hotter. All that with a beer set me back 18 bucks. Not bad for Cali prices.

Great tacos. Fair prices. Only four beers on tap, but they were all decent IPAs. Good selection of bottled Mexican standard beers and wine. And its in the Village, so its right next to Petes Place and Four Penny pub. So you can get a drink after eating some dope chile relleno tacos.

City Tacos is my go to for high quality gourmet tacos. Wether Im in North Park or La Mesa I do my best to talk my friends into City Tacos. You really cant go wrong with any item on the menu. I recently discovered the bowl of beans...its not just beans! Order either the veggie or the meat frijoles because they are delicious!!!

Best bang for your buck in La Mesa for tacos. Theyre delicious and also patio is dog friendly. Service is fast they also have couple rotating beers to help wash down the delicious tacoes. Also has a project in the patio playing movies on the wall

The agua frescas are yummy-i got pineapple. So many choices. I was not expecting so much to try and pick from and people in line are not very patient. If you are indecisive or have never been here, figure out what you want you want before arriving! I finally decided on salmon taco. It was good and filling, but I will definitely be prepared if I ever go again.
