Was visiting San Francisco for work and I found this little gem walking down the street in downtown San Mateo. You can smell the spices from outside. It was so tasty, I took my leftovers with me on the plane.

Clay Oven Cuisine of India in San Mateo is a fantastic restaurant that offers excellent service, delicious and savory food, and a cozy ambiance that is perfect for both date nights and business meetings. The owner is incredibly attentive and the cook is able to accommodate a wide range of spice levels, from very mild to extremely spicy. The quality of the meat, chicken, and all ingredients is top-notch and the restaurant is always kept clean. Located in a shopping area, the restaurant also plays great Indian music, making for a well-rounded and enjoyable experience. I highly recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for delicious Indian cuisine, with an emphasis on the preparation, ambiance, quality of service, flavor and serving size, all of which are the best and perfect.

I stopped by this restaurant during my business trip. Tried their biryani and lamb curry. I have to admit, the worst Indian restaurant food I have ever had. The lamb curry had everything in it except salt and whatever it supposed to have. The curry was bitter (who puts fried onion on top of Indian curry 🥲🥲🥲🥲 omg) and I forced to eat the meat alone and threw the curry. Likewise, biryani had nuts and everything except biryani taste. Totally wont recommend this place. I believe the chef puts in everything thats nearby his hand while cooking but totally forgets the salt and real spices 😂😂😂

Unpleasant Environment . We went all the way from Fresno . Employees are so unwelcoming to the customer. They were busy in doing there own party and drinks .. and they put so loud Punjabi Songs environments was so noisy and unpleasant. Owner should pay attention on his employees .. their hospitality is not professional. Food was not that great. Would say they need to work on there quality of performance. We thought to ate dinner but after the whole atmosphere we change our mind and we went out ..Thank you

Just the very best! This is the best Indian Restaurants, I can eat here as they don’t use MSG. I’ve had others in other cities and my legs ache and that is a heads up that that particular restaurant is using MSG.Love me some butter chicken!!!! Oh and a Taj Mahal beer to back it all up!! Can never go wrong here. A must try if your into Indian food.

Made a delivery order for 2 online. Order included: Papadum, Nan, Raita, Paneer Makhni, Mattar Paneer, Vegetable Pakora, Rice Pilav. Food delivery was top notch—delivered early & still warm. Flavors were complex, creamy, savory, & delicious. There was plenty of food for 2 people, with enough for leftovers. My only complaint is about the Vegetable Pakora—the texture was tough enough that I feared chipping a tooth just taking a bite! The flavor was so good, but man, it was hard to chew. Overall, a great experience & I would definitely order from Clay Oven again.

Best Indian food!!!!Parking can be hectic, depending on when you come.Walk in, youre heated by friendly staff, and youre seated. The restaurant is dim lighting, with a bar connected next door.The food was delicious, fresh, and flavourful. Portions were good, pricing fair. I had the Tandoori Chicken from the clay oven roasted section. Amazing prices all over the menu, huge plus. Chicken was tender (assuming thats from the yogurt marination), healthy amount of spice though not very spicy and the veggies were awesome! You dont taste the yogurt so dont let that scare you from trying this flavorful dish.I also had the samosas (comes with 2, great size) and the garlic nan.Honestly cant go wrong here. Definitely coming back. Awesome for a date setting or if you just want bomb food for a good price. They also serve wine and beer fyi ;)

An average take on North Indian cuisine.We ordered the cheese pakora ( read paneer ), onion bhajji, tandoori chicken, and chicken kebabs.I also got some mango lassi.Best part of the evening? The mango lassi!! It isn’t too sweet and had the perfect essence of mango.Onion bhajji is a joke, please avoid it!

My girlfriend and I came here on a Friday evening. The owner and staff were very friendly. We asked for some additional changes to our entrees and he said they were happy to make them and accommodate.I think the Google Review rating number belies the potential of the experience when you dine here.We were walking up and done 3rd Ave and feel fortunate to have stumbled upon this tasty and inviting Indian spot.

What can I say about this place. They have the best Indian food in all of California. I’ve tried other places but their food, service is top notch. They greet you when you come in. The server is attentive always. This is our spot we always come when we are craving Indian food. We live in fremont and drive over the bridge once or twice a week to come to this place. They’re appetizers, entrees and they have a lounge next door. I would recommend this place 100 times over and over. All my friends and family members have been told by me to come to this place. Hands down the tastiest and most authentic Indian food Ive ever had. Plus the prices are much more affordable compared to other Indian restaurants. The serving size wont disappoint. So many different types of Naan breads, lamb chops were delicious, and the Tikka masala sauce is the most original recipe Ive ever tasted and will come back for it 100%. I dont eat spicy but my friends do but all the dishes were made to our specific requirements as well. What a great experience!

I went here in hunt of biryani with my friends, and we were more than satisfied, also had garlic naan, butter chicken, and indian style chicken curry. One of the best places in the area to savour Indian delicacies. Not only the food, but the ambience and the staff were also very hospitable. This restaurant is horrible with customer service. I am an Uber eats driver. I’ve had problems here 4 times. I arrive around 11:30 am to pick up an order. When I get here the doors are locked. I call the restaurant and they say they are open and will open the doors for me. I wait outside for 30 minutes and still no one comes. I call Uber support and they contact the restaurant. Clay oven lies to Uber support and says they opened the door for me and the customers order is ready. They never did that and then when support calls them again they don’t answer. I’m not sure if the owner is aware of this or if it’s the lazy workers who are not opening up the restaurant. If it’s the workers they need to be fired or supervised

Really trash front service, the front service rushes you to place an order. They also force you to place the whole order in one go, they will NOT receive an order second time. Bland smell in restaurant space. Receptionist picks the call and immediately ends it by answering your initial query and not the following queries, even though the entire restaurant was empty and they weren’t busy. They really need to take care of their staff’s attitude if they want the restaurant to work.

Others keep saying how the food flavored correctly but I have had the opposite opinion. Everything was flavored well and each dish had an option for mild medium and spicy. I think others might be having trouble with the all you can eat menu. So I would recommend ordering thought the set menu. I had a very pleasant experience with the waiter as he was attentive and would fill the waters frequently. He also did a good job warning me of the spicyness of the meal for it was perfect for me.

This is the worst Indian restaurant I have ever visited in the United States. Very pathetic food and staff behavior was extremely bad. I ordered Aaloo paratha for my toddler they didn’t add salt hardly saw any potatoes and I ordered Mashroom mutter looks like instead of curry they just put any hot sauce with raw mashrum & peace, extremely pathetic taste. When I called the restaurant they said they will deliver the food for babies in an hour but they didn’t delivered and not even picked my calls. I don’t think it’s Indian hospitality & don’t think an Indian can do this so I doubt. So if you are looking for desi authentic taste this is not the place you will just waste your money $$. I will not recommend this place.

We were served dry Chapatis and when we told the manager he just took the chapatis and just asked so you dont need it right? . I came here and tried the lunch buffet. The food and service does not match the decor. The decor is very nice, service is unprofessional and impersonal, food is subpar. Im not sure if its because there arent many people eating there so they dont refill the food often, but everything had out been sitting out for a long time. All the meats were dry, but flavor was ok. One star for the made to order naan, one star for their chai, and one star for their paneer in butter sauce. Id recommend going somewhere else.Edit: Checked my credit card statement afterward and and they added extra tip. Im sure its an honest mistake, but its just annoying. I dont want someone elses mistake to cause me to keep a balance on my credit card and then have my credit lowered.

I had a buffet here and I didnt like a single item on the menu. First of all almost every food item lacked salt which is kind of a basic ingredient. Food was bland desserts didnt taste fresh. Worst Indian food in San Francisco! I realize these are troubled times yet the order was wrong and the chicken meat is so old its not even chewable. I am not sure if this is an india restaurant. I have never been disappointed after eating food at a restaurant. They maintained consistency though, all dishes were equally bad. I don’t even have to start on desserts, the ice cream was juice, you will get half a gulab jamun like no other restaurant and don’t you dare try it it’s disgusting. I ordered 5 items and all te 5 items had issues. Naans are chewy and dry, raise is too sour, rice is broken and daal is too garlicky. I recommend not to order from this restaurant.

Never ever order from Clay oven. I would love to share my experience. First time they didnt give me food what I ordered. When I said them they said we are sorry. Didnt even take efforts to change food. Second time the food was not good. The taste of the food was not good. And also they took order through Doordash at 11:30 and their kitchen opens at 12, bcoz of which the doordash delivery person left the restaurant at 12:15. Very unethical people. So let me start off by saying I had high expectations. I eat at the one in Livermore weekly, it’s my go to. That being said I was so disappointed by the food I received from the clay oven in San Mateo. The samosas were either over cooked or just old. The veggie cocanut curry was horrible, all the veggies were crunchy and I asked for medium spice and there was no spice at all. The naan came cold.... I would not order here again.

The chicken was blend, we said mild spicy, but there was basic flavor missing in chicken Tikka masala. The mixed vegetable was just Gobi aalo and the chef forgot to cut the cauliflower. I’ve never rated any restaurant before but this one is worth to waste a little bit of my time to write about it because it’s not even worth to pass by it, very rude service and I’m not Indian to understand the menu so for sure i have to ask about couple stuff in it and i was surprised how rude and how mad he got when i asked him about it and in the end gave me a wrong plate and i asked for mild food and i got it hella spicy and it took another 20 minutes to get the plate again and it was nightmare and I won’t go back or thinking of this restaurant again ...

I would give it 0 starts if that was an option. They used 1 gravy for all the dishes. Boiled chicken bland thrown into the gravy. The malai kofta which is supposed to be in a curd gravy was in the same gravy as the butter chicken. The price of 2 small pieces of bread was $3 the paneer was hard and a complete waste.
