I never like leaving bad reviews but my extremely delayed takeout experience at Colonial Kitchen warranted this. I was hosting an event and put in an order 2 days before my event to make sure the restaurant knew beforehand. I received a phone call the day before my event letting me know that my order was confirmed. Great! Everything seemed to be running smoothly. On the day of my event, I called to see if I could adjust my pick up time 30 minutes earlier or if I could dine in at the time I put instead of picking up. I was told that both options were not possible; I could understand as this was a last minute request. I went to pick up my order at the time I had requested and the order was not ready. I waited for 45 minutes before my order was brought out. No explanations or apologies were given. The delay completely derailed my event. I make it a point to support local businesses and I understand that delays happen but the lack of communication and the fact that my order was 45 minutes late highlights the lack of customer service. Do not recommend for anyone who needs to pick up in a timely fashion.

I really wanted to like this place, the staff were very friendly and accomodating but the food was sub par, I ordered the biscuits and gravy and the pigs in blankets. I sent back the biscuits because the gravy tasted like it came from a can and had no flavour it was almost a rue and the pigs in blankets need to be made with bigger sausages, the tiny chipolata links used just got lost in the huge thick fluffy pancackes. I liked that we could sit outside with the dog :)

I had an amazing breakfast French toast sandwich with homemade jelly. The location is in a very nice neighborhood, which makes for a perfect breakfast brunch date. Plenty of Parking which makes it easy to visit. Great service will definitely be back.

Went for brunch, very nice and extensive menu. They even have an old fashion lunch counter. Very efficient wait staff.I had the salsa omelet with a funky potato style hash with peppers and onions, very good. My wife ordered the pancakes and she liked them.

Restaurant is a quint sandwich bistro with a bar. Food was good. Service was slow to almost non existent and the staff didnt seem to know details about their basic items. IE: when asked what kind of tomatoes were on the house salad their response was, there are no tomatoes. Then the salad arrived with sliced tomatoes. Hmmm. Also, we had to snag silverware from the empty table next to us after they delivered said salad without any silverware. They also did not show again until delivering our food. Then not again until 15 minutes after we were all done went up and asked the bartender for the check. Maybe it was an off day, though they were not crowded. Basically, did the job for lunch but probably wont be back.

Our waitress and bus boy were very accommodating. They kept our coffee cups full. Our waitress was concerned the plate my 98 year old mother ordered was too hard for her to chew. She recommended a different plate and she was right. The music was great and all around atmosphere was pleasant. I plan on returning with my family soon.

Colonial Kitchen Restaurant is a diner that serves good breakfast located in the middle of San Marino district. Its indoor atmosphere is very welcoming, like youre at home. As you enter the restaurant, its foyer is decorated with glass cabinets housing figurines and Elvis Presley commemorative plates; like stepping into an eccentrics personal memorabilia collection. I came here for breakfast on an early Sunday morning and ordered their pancake combo (3 stacks pancakes, 2 eggs and 2 sausage links) and coffee. I am selective in taste when it comes to pancakes. CKs buttermilk pancakes are soft, fluffy and light in texture. Similarly, their coffee, sausage and eggs taste good. Indoor seating is well organized, neat, clean and well lit. Moreover, the counter bar leather green seats are very comfortable and evenly spacious. Service was moderately fast. Staff were very attentive, friendly, nice and professional. Prices are relatively $$ affordable. Parking space is of midsize. Overall, I had a good experience and highly recommend Colonial Kitchen for breakfast.

Most definitely a hidden gems 💎 in San Marino, live not too far from it and been in the area but never noticed it, now my girls and I have a moms & pops style resto to go to every Sunday. Always drove by this unique restaurant... Finally stopped in for breakfast. What took me so long?! Its great in here! Fresh, whole foods and that 70s wood paneling retro vibe. Its literally like taking a step back in time. I dont live near here any more so I have to go out of my way to come here. Same friendly staff that has been working here for years and good, down home, old school food. Its currently up for sale and the owners only wish to sell it if the buyer agrees to keep things as they are and keep the current staff in place. I think that is terrific! If I won the lottery, I would seriously consider buying it. Only thing I would change would be to restore the original front doors.

This place is like revisiting my childhood, when my Mom took us kids out to eat. The dining area is a throwback to the 70’s — and I could swear I’ve seen this place in a movie (just can’t recall which one). The available entrees include classic American, some Asian, & some Hispanic dishes. The prices are not too high — but I suggest trying the specials (if your watching your dollars). Hope you like this place as much as I did. I wanted to give more stars, but the waitress was not very friendly. Maybe she was having a bad day — but try smiling and conversing with your patrons. You might’ve gotten a bigger tip.

I was very excited to try a new breakfast spot. Except this wasnt it. All the coffee cups were filthy.I shouldnt be shocked that a restaurant with the name colonial in it is racist. The wait staff is Racist. Ignored customers who appeared to be of Caucasian ancestry.... only served people that were Hispanic. Didnt come to our table even once yet gave coffee and helped out anyone who wasnt white and came in AFTER us. Or maybe its because my husband is middle eastern. There were plenty of waiters and they were not crowded.I watched her walk around with a coffee pot and literally only pour coffee at the tables who werent white people. I watched another server just standing there doing nothing.She literally skipped them on purpose. I saw a white woman wave at the server with the full coffee pot and get ignored then I saw the customer have to get up and ask for coffee and the check from the man doing to go orders...we waited for a long time and no one came to us. Its very racist dont go here unless youre not white and not middle eastern -Jewish. I cant speak for other ethnicities they must be hyper aware like me and already know not to come here.We really sat there for twenty minutes observing the racism. Its 2023, spread love not hate. All money is green. And also its unsanitary to put dirty cups on the table. Posting a picture for evidence.

This place has been around for 47 years but its under new management.Im assuming the food was so so because the cooks were too busy.I ordered fish and chips and both came out burnt.Didnt want to send it back because the restaurant was busy but....dont know that we will go back.My husband ordered the chicken fried steak and it came with green beans and broccoli and the broccoli tasted like it had been mixed with seafood somehow.I know the new owners are trying but...they need to have a better grip on their cooks and how they prepare food.And last but not least...customers were letting the staff know that the flag outside was upside down.Apparently whoever put the flag out wasnt being careful and the stars and stripes were in the opposite position.Again, the owners need to take control and make sure that everything is in perfect working order.The restaurant is comfortable and the staff could be a little friendlier but of course change can bring anxiety so I will take that into consideration.It was our first time going there and we had heard good things about it but didnt know that it was under new management.Hope it gets better.

Amazing service from the time we came in. It was our first time there and server was extremely helpful in helping us order, we decided to go with her advise and got the Titan breakfast which was plenty of food for two to share. Service was amazing and very fast but quality of food didn’t disappoint. We will definitely be back to try something new or share the Titan again.

We have been loyal customers of Colonial for many years. Unfortunately, we recently had dinner after not having visited for some time and were quite disappointed. Several red flags regarding the food and service.I was told by the waitress that the previous owners retired and apparently the business was passed on to some relatives. The entire restaurant was empty during dinner time except for a private party the owners were a part of. The staff appeared uneasy and could not clearly answer our questions about the dinner menu.The food we ordered was basic. Upon receiving our bill, I noticed we were overcharged for two items—$13.00 for a kids grilled cheese that was listed on the menu for $9.00 and a chicken plate that was $20.00 that should have been $16.00…all listed prices on the menu.When I asked the waitress about the overcharge, she acted confused and almost as if she didn’t know how to make the correction. When she finally adjusted the bill, she still overcharged on my credit card. When I tried to explain to her that she still overcharged me, she acted confused again. At this point, I said I would just pay the bill and leave 0 tip that she could take from the overcharged bill. The “new” owners came out to stare but never assisted. In fact, the male owner just stared at me and never answered when I inquired if he was the new owner. Very sad that this occurred. We really have fond memories of this place. Sadly, we will never come back here. Another great Mom and Pop restaurant bites the dust. Whatever you do, don’t eat here. They will try to rip you off. We paid $64.00 for a chicken sandwich, children’s grilled cheese, a lousy, fried chicken tender plate, and 3 drinks. Not worth $20 dollars for the whole dinner. It was terrible!!

We walked in and the first thing I thought was this place needs a face lift. We get seated right away and get our beverages and order taken right away. The food didnt take long to get to us but one order that was pancakes, eggs and bacon lacked the bacon. I had to ask the server for the bacon and we also did not get an order of toast we had ordered. The other order said it was supposed to come with chilled OJ but the server just decided to not charge the one we had. She should have asked if thats what we wanted. Then I wanted sugar free syrup and a soda refill and had to wait a long time for any of the four server/busboys to get that taken care of. The waitress only came by when we where practically done. I have worked at a restaurant and you should go back once everything is served to make sure everything is ok and if anything else is needed. I guess not here. The food was ok but not good enough for us to want to go back and risk bad service. Bad first experience and will be our last time there.

I’ve been coming to this location for close to 10 years now. The breakfast food has always been my draw because of the portion sizes and quality. I’ve really enjoyed coming here not only for homey cooking but also the ambience. It’s not very often you still find mom and pop places that haven’t lost their charm. I mean hell, I’m sure Mad Men location scouts chose this establishment for that same reason.Linda, whose the previous owner, has always been welcoming, and Rosa was always my go-to server when she was still around. As I was reminded yesterday, nothing lasts forever, including ownership.Last night as I drove by I was surprised to see it was open until 9 PM. I took a look inside and was surprised to see it’s become something different: a large screen TV was added to the dining room area, a piano, and a bunch of other decorations that frankly make it look tacky. It feels almost as if it’s going through an identity crisis.As far as the food was concerned, I understand prices have gone up with our current economic situation. I can’t complain with my tuna melt. I also noticed they are now offering drinks and a happy hour menu. A Bloody Mary made for a customer looked good. However by Tuesday standards it was empty.To the new ownership: this place has been a staple to the community for decades. Be mindful of the changes. A breakfast restaurant seemingly transitioning into a late night bar may not be ideal given the location and bedroom community status San Marino holds. Make too many changes, and you will drive away the customers that have come out for years.

RECENT UPDATE (Ive added a star): Ive been back a few times since the not so great experience described below and have only good things to add about the staff and the food. So, maybe that one bad day was a one off. Thanks!-----------------------------------------------------------------Ive frequented this restaurant a few time since I live in the neighborhood and its always been just fine and a nice option for a quick, satisfying breakfast. However, on my walk today I thought Id stop in for breakfast. I stood at the Wait here to be seated sign inside the restaurant for 10 minutes. Though several staff members passed me to perform various tasks, not ONE person greeted me or acknowledged my presence in any way. Its like I was invisible. Finally, I just turned and left to continue my walk home.

This is my experience at The Colonial Kitchen. I had passed by many years and was intrigued by the name. Im very patriotic and love everything Colonial. The only colonial thing about this spot is probably the cash register. No apple pay, by the way, but that wasn’t the issue.The New York country steak literally looked like a piece of meat that was pressed between a panini maker; those grill marks did not look authentic. The only reason those house potatoes were crispy was the charcoal skin on the potatoes that was gladly served on the same plate as the mediocre piece of sausage-looking, cardboard-tasting piece of meat they dared to charge $25 for. Yes, the “steak” does deserve this review; it literally looked like it had been frozen since colonial times and microwaved in the 21st century.Our server was friendly. The pancakes were decent, definitely worth the $10. The woman at the register and what I believe was the owner could use a little sign that reminds them to smile. Not a total waste of money but definitely a total disappointment.

This is a comfy, relax type of Western style restaurant with good food in San Marino. The price is decent, and employees are friendly. Most of the customers are seniors with few middle ages. This was a waste of time and money. I ordered the Titan, eggs, sausage, bacon, hash browns, pancakes and sourdough toast. Everything on my plate was cols, the eggs over easy that I ordered were cooked all the way through and the yolks were broken. I paid close to $50.00 and I would have been better off buying a doughnut at the doughnut shop. Not once did any person associated with this establishment asked how our food was and when I paid the bill the owner didnt ask either, all he wanted was my money. I wont be coming back.

The owners and the waiters were incredibly friendly towards me. I really enjoyed the lovely selections of breakfast items, and once it restarted to serve indoors, I was lucky enough to sit at the table where Don Draper used to dine with a beautiful young lady in Mad Men. The entire experience at the Colonial Kitchen Restaurant was like an exciting trip back to the 1950s and 60s: vintage, nostalgic and elegant. I absolutely love this hidden gem in San Marino. :)

I love this place. I moved away from the area. But, when I have a chance I make sure to stop in for a great breakfast. Rosa, it the best she always know my order no matter how long its been. She treats everyone special when they walk in the door. Your cup of coffee you will never see the bottom of the cup until you ready to go. I always feel like it has that home feel when I stop in. When Im traveling for work I like to find little out-of-the-way places for breakfast. This was a nice little diner. The service was very friendly, the atmosphere was authentic-retro. Food is fairly good. a bit pricey. service has always been very slow but surprisingly not annoying. free wifi is a big plus. place has been around a long time and still charming. mostly older people go. very quiet and quaint. I paid 23 for cinnamon french toast with egg sausage and bacon and a coke. portions are a decent size but not worth 23. I don’t know how this place hasn’t been shut down yet nor how it has so many high ratings! Whenever I pass this place my stomach churns. We had a group dinner there with visitors from China. The server/owner (?) could only offer a limited number of people certain soups because she didn’t have enough cans of each for us to order what we wanted. But the reason why I will never step foot in this place again is that at the end of the meal as we were getting ready to leave a rat 🐀 ran out of the kitchen and jumped onto the table. We literally ran out!

Well, its literally been around a year and a half since I had indulged in food from my happy place. About 2 years ago I was diagnosed with stage 2 stomach cancer and subsequently began to undergo endoscopy procedures to remove the various tumors that were filling my stomach and subsequent began to deaden the various functions. Eventually the endoscopic procedures were wearing out the lining of my stomach... to the point in which hemorrhaging was inevitable. Suddenly, I reached that point that a gastric resection was the only reasonable option.Well, I have done the hard work and Finally have began to eat a more balanced and normal diet. My 1st meal back was literally mind blowingly tasty and delicious. Ok... do you remember that particular scene from HARRY met SALLY? Yes, thats the one... my take out was just that great! Hey guys, we all know how a burger from a poolside bbq is really good and a restaurant burger just cant be quite the same? Well, I had forgotten that colonel kitchen actually cracked the code and mastered it. Come in and attempt to prove me wrong... lol I double dare you!

Love love love Colonial Kitchen. This place is beautiful and very old school. Youre transported back to a 1950s / 60s Coffee Shop /Diner. But NOT like Happy Days or Mels Drive In. They have a Great selection of American Faire. In a setting that feels a bit like youre visiting someones home. Curtains and table lamps...and a grandfather clock. Hints of British Decor as well. This is the kind of gem any neighborhood would be lucky to have. The kind of beautiful restaurant with beautiful architecture and good old fashioned food that you can only hope will be around forever!
