Consistently good. Reminds me of New York, or Chicago-style deli. Full-service Restaurant and complete deli.The staff is friendly but quick.The interior hasn’t changed in years, which only adds to the ambiance.(in this photo is a Reuben omelette, home fries, and an everything bagel).Once you slice into this omelet, there are loads of corned beef and sauerkraut.Multiple other breakfast options available.

I have been eating at DZ Akins for over 30 years, and it never disappoints. Their food and service are awesome. Portions are generous. Usually I get breakfast food when I go, and their diner fare – eggs, potatoes, pancakes etcetera – is delicious; but all their food is in my experience. My kids noticed their service and said, Wow, Dad, its like they know what you want before you ask. Pretty much. 👍

This was my first visit here. My neighbor recommended it. He said that the sandwiches were enormous.He was right!I tried the #55 Turkey, avocado and jack. It was huge! I could only finish half along with a generous side of cole slaw.Very big menu. I’ll come back and try something else next time.

Extensive menu of American home style and Jewish deli favorites. If going for lunch, take a look at their daily special, as it’s usually a good $4 cheaper than off the menu. Get the onion rings, if you like them in general— side of ranch for extra deliciousness. The dining room is huge, and it seems, always packed. You can’t go wrong with any of the sandwiches, which come piled high. Service was friendly and helpful, but don’t expect fine dining: go somewhere else for that. Will def be back soon.

DZ Akins has a MASSIVE menu - prepare to be overwhelmed. We were there for breakfast and got a mocha (which was delightful), a potato pancake (which was also delightful), and an omelette and home fries. The omelette was good - nothing spectacular - but the home fries were mushy and tasteless. All of this would have been fine, but our waitress was so rude. She didnt take our order for about 30 minutes, and she never came back to check on us after she delivered the food. We had to go ask someone at the front counter for refills on water, and we had to go ask someone else for the check. We did get a couple of pastries on the way out, and they were pretty dry and flavorless. I would definitely skip this restaurant and find something better - there are many more wonderful options in San Diego!

The service is the best Ive ever had.The food we ordered came out so fast, nice presentation, and hot! We ordered 2 specials, which were pastrami Reuben and a corned beef Reuben with sauerkraut. Delicious!!! I asked our server about the chopped liver, she was so kind, she gave me a little sample. It was delicious. They also have a full bakery.

Until today this was one of my favorite places to eat. Our server informed us that all of their prices just went up. I order a brisket dip sandwich with fries and it cost me $32!! Yikes. I don’t think I will be back. The food is good but it’s not a sandwich that is worth $32.

Fantastically fantastic simply describe this slice of Jewish delicatessen which could be straight out of a Hollywood movie or old photos of a trip to New York. The menu is huge and to make matters easy I went in for what I was craving…Matzah ball soup (also called Jewish penicillin by my kids mom). It came with a twist not only was the Matzah ball huge the soup also had noodles that were cooked to perfection. The pastrami on rye (mini) sandwich was delicious. This establishment has been around since 1980 and I can not believe it took me this long to venture in for some great food. The atmosphere is totally New York delicatessen style and if that’s what you are looking for you will not be disappointed. This place exceeded my expectations. Enjoy! Tell them Theo sent you.

The go-to place when you need Jewish comfort food. Matzah balls, big sandwiches, latkes, kreplach, brisket, you name it. The portions are huge and the prices reflect it, but I enjoy the nostalgia of seeing (and buying) chopped liver and pickled herring from my youth in the deli window.

Large quantities of traditional Jewish delicatessen food. Who could ask for anything more? The chicken livers were enormous and the sandwiches were stacked high. They serve breakfast food all day which was popular with some of the pickier eaters in the crowd. The dessert counter looked phenomenal, but we were too stuffed to order any. Next time well know to split a dish and save room for dessert!Update: food still great with big portions. If you order the dessert, make sure you share. They are HUGE! See pictures.... Coffee ice cream was strong, probably best Ive ever had.

For the location this is probbaly a 5 star. In the area there is not many options when it comes to food. The service is great but Id say the quality of food is okay. The bakery is a little pricey for the quality of baked goods. The deli makes much better sandwiches than the restaurant. Its very clean and you have a lot of options on the menu and thats always great when trying to please a group.

We had a craving for corned beef and pastrami, so drove out for lunch on Sunday. It was crowded, but we got outdoor seating immediately. Both our sandwiches were excellent. Our server was awesome too.The parking lot can be a challenge. Just be patient. Or look for street parking.

The pastrami here is the closest Ive had to the delicatessens on the east coast. Not generous servings like those, but the taste is the perfect blend of salt, spices with fat that makes the pastrami in any iteration a solid choice.Try the 3 egg omelet with the pastrami (served flat like a pancake) and get the side of fruit. The sweetness of the fruit partners great with the mild salt taste of the omelet.

Not like this place needs any more positive reviews. But it was our first time trying it after being in San Diego for 15 years. Ive had Miltons before and it is good but its not compared to DZ akins in my opinion. We got the reuben sandwich with french fries everything about the sandwich and french fries was amazing. The bread is freshly baked the meat was delectable the potatoes came out piping hot with a generous portion. You have to get their pickles!! Youve never had a pickle like it. It retains that cucumber flavor with the pickle flavor its everything you would imagine pickles could be. We also got a few desserts to go. They have a fresh bakery there that is out of this world. We got three items there were $5 a piece which we had first thought was a little pricey but when you eat them the quality speaks for itself. I got a version of a ding dong and a two-sided cannoli one size chocolate the other is a type of maple nuts. The cannoli literally weighs 3 lb. Shouldnt take a picture of some more things but Im sure theres plenty for everybody to see online

We had brunch here and I was very impressed. This is a Jewish deli serving excellent food with very sizable portions. We had 5 star service from a server thats been working there for almost 20 years. I had a sausage and mushroom omelette with Monterrey jack cheese. It was very filling. My order came with potatoes and a muffin. The deli also serves bakery items so if you have a sweet tooth this place is worth checking out. Everyone in our party enjoyed the food. They have a parking lot with free parking. Came here for lunch and wasn’t super impressed. The food wasn’t bad, but it definitely wasn’t anything to write home about. The Reuben was average. The fries needed more salt. I did enjoy the potato knish. The service was pretty good. I think the flaw of this restaurant is their large menu. There were probably over 100 items on there. It seems as if they know how to make all of them edible, just not any of them that well.

Our first visit was already amazing. The are very COVID compliant and neat. Customers were being let into the store maybe 3-4 at a time? They were very patient with us as it was our first time. Seeing the big menu and bakery/deli items is pretty overwhelming, but they will answer any questions you have! We were recommended the eclair, so we got that along with some other goodies to accompany our meals. The sandwich is PACKED and can honestly feed 2 adults...but I was hungry 😂 their omelette meal is super tasty, and probably the most flavorful Ive tasted. Im sure the rest of their menu is just as delish, and we cant wait to try the rest of it.

Years ago this place used to be amazing, They had Americans working there that spoke English and treated everybody with deep kindness and respect now its completely different story, You walk in and you go to the hostess counter and ask for a seat and you get ignorant little Mex. who dont want to be there They just want to be on their phone, They wont even look your way, They dont want to help you then when you sit down get a table You just cross your fingers you dont get one of the mean waitresses unfortunately thats what we got This lady never came around I had to get up out of my seat at least four times to make sure that our order was taken, to make sure that we got our drinks, to make sure that our order was correct had to get out again to make a dessert purchase.... Truly gone downhill, I dont know why they have let it go and are hiring the wrong people, Also when I went in the restroom I noticed that the girl from the gift store was in there on her phone pacing around talking completely engrossed in her phone in the womens bathroom then later when we all went to the gift store there she was again in the corner behind the counter supposably supposed to be working on her phone laughing it was as if she had no idea she was actually getting a paycheck She was actually supposed to be working but she didnt want anything to do with work/helping customers/ This place is pathetic. Their idea of a sandwich is meat between two slices of cold bread...VERY BLAND. I felt like i was in a school cafeteria of a prison or a third world country. No mayo, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles... Its overpriced and not all impressive. There are so many other delis that are way better than here. I would take Jersey Mikes over this place any day! Tuesday, August 6 - My husband and I had lunch here today. I had the BBQ Treat sandwich with onion rings and he had the Philly Cheese Steak sandwich with fruit. To begin with our waitress was exceptional! One of the best weve seen and we eat out a lot. The food was delicious and made perfectly. The meat on my sandwich was tender and flavorful, and the BBQ sauce was perfectly tangy. On the way out we stopped at the bakery and purchased dessert for later..carrot cake cupcake and chocolate custard eclair (mine). YUM!! Today I rated it 5 stars...but then we came back the following week...Monday, August 12 - Last week our lunch was so good (as mentioned above) that I wanted to come back for another BBQ Treat sandwich. Unfortunately, unlike last week, the service today was terrible and the restaurant was only half full. It took 15 minutes before someone came over to take our drink orders and then another 10 minutes to get the drinks. My husband ordered the Mish Mash and it was fine. When my order finally arrived the meat was tough and chewy and basically uneatable. The BBQ sauce was bland, tasteless, and had no tang whatsoever. I dont know why there was such a big difference in taste and quality and service from last week but it was a huge disappointment especially since I was looking forward to it all morning. Even though I couldnt eat it I hate wasting food so I paid for it and took it home to see if my husband could eat it later. So, unfortunately, I had to rate it only 1 star.

I had their delicious Ruben! The pastrami was cooked and seasoned well and the bread was fantastic. Even though it was 17 dollars cause it was a Wednesday . If it was Tuesday or Thursday, it would have been 13. Great food. You get what you pay for. The sandwiches that we got here were pretty average and for the price, maybe not really worth it. Their bakery items, however, are amazing and totally worth it. The only thing Id like to see change is the addition of some price tags. 18% MINIMUM TIP!!!Watch out when you pay the sleek card machine. The tip options (for take out from deli) are 18, 20, 25, 30%. 10 or 15% did NOT appear as a selection. I stood in the deli and they handed my order over the glass. There was no “serving” happening.I am so offended by this business owner sneaking extra money away from the customers and servers and into their pockets. On 11/9/23 I placed a$55. 00 dollar order through Grubhub, ( they did nothing wrong, the delvered my order, no problem) my order had 3 things, 2 of them were completely wrong, I called to talk about it with a manager she yelled at me and told me to call Grubhub, but it was 100% DZ Akins fault, all I wanted was them to meet me halfway on a order they didnt have. 1, they advertise a Mushroom Barley soup, what I got had not one mushroom it it, ok fine, disappointed but not a big deal, that was $ 10.00.The main problem was a $21.00 corned beef sandwich, I asked for and have a recept for all this, all I asked for was 1,000 Island dressing, it came bone dry, the meat was dry as can be. The manager told me we dont put 1,000 Island dressing on our sandwich, I said really, that is what I asked for, I mean who doesnt like that. Again instead of working with me, she kept telling me to call and complain to Grubhub, THEY DID NOTHING WRONG, DZ did and would not own up to a mistake. This could have been resolved so easily, in America for 55 dollars, you think you could get a simple good meal, but even more crazy is how the manager put the blame on everyone other then saying, Im so,sorry we messed up, how can we make it right and keep a coustermer..

We had cornbeef hash, Latkes, Pastrami Dip, salad, Mishmash soup, Cabbage roll, challa bread, and a large cream puff. We agreed everything was to our liking and served with care. DZs Pastrami rivals any you have had. Their cornbeef is very good. Cabbage rolls just amazing. It was a solid meal without issue. The cream puff was light and tasty. Highly recommend. Staff and servers on the ball in every way. The entire team can talk about menu items, bakery, and deli. Hardworkers and great attitudes. The restaurant is spacious inside and out. I grew up in Manhattan, and have been to all the great delis- the Carnegie, the Stage, the Second Avenue Deli, Katz’ Deli, as well as small neighborhood delis in the outer boroughs, and I am sorry- this rates a C or three stars. The place is very run down, probably from the 1970s, and looks like it needs a cleaning or a remodel, and the food is not cheap, but I wouldn’t care if the food were the real Jewish deli experience. We haven’t found great pastrami or corned beef in San Diego-no taste, not flavorful or crave-able, the bagels are so so ( not at all like H&H- the NYC standard), the baked goods are meh. The latkes are heavy and oil- laden, not worthy. I guess if you compare this place to a “ deli” in the boonies, where they serve meat sandwiches on white bread with Mayo, this is an improvement, but otherwise, save your appetite for this fare for when you’re on vacation in NYC.

The meat was chewy and fatty and it was in a ball in the middle not flat and not extending to the edge of the sandwich. The Philly cheesesteak was pretty good, good flavor from the veggies inside. Waitress was a sweetheart but clearly flustered and overworked. She did her best to take care of us but I cant stand when Im at an establishment and it isnt adequately staffed. The bread was thick and tough, turkey was bland and dry. Perhaps other items on the menu are better and I simply made the wrong choice. I would not recommend the turkey bacon avo sandwich. The problem for me was how miserable all of the workers were. Not one smile, or any welcoming words among them. Waited to have my order taken for over five minutes before realizing I had to take a “number” which was useless considering I was the only one waiting. The worker looked at me like a deer in headlights when I asked how this worked (because they never asked for my number at the counter). The cashier was rude and had a nasty attitude. Fantastic food. Fast service. Been eating here for 30 or so years. Only thing that has changed is the price. Be ready for $20+ for a sandwich. They have a great deli but boy I tell you what roast beef is $20 a pound be prepared to open your wallet.

Huge selection. Just about any deli/cafe food you could imagine, plus more. Prices are high, +/-$20 for sandwiches. Food and desserts are pretty generic tasting to me, but husband adores this place for lunch. The staff is great, and we are always seated promptly, even though it is usually very crowded.

When it comes to Jewish Delicatessens you can’t beat DZ Akin’s. The closest thing to New York here in San Diego. Sandwich are the size of your head and service Oy Vey so good! Make sure to get some baked cookies on your way out because these things won’t last forever they go quick!

Good service. It’s one of those places you know is good when you walk through the door. My PT recommend this place for lunch after my appointment. I will say the ordering queue system was a little chaotic but it Presidents’ Day so the place is bussin with local fans. Plenty of options for pastries, plate foods, breakfast, hot and cold sandwiches, bagels, soups, a gift shop and more. I will return to explore this gem.

Well, I was so excited and waiting for, to try this place after so many good reviews and pictures. But I was very disappointed.Matt was so great taking care of us and the quantity is very fulfilling, but the quality was terrible, so sorry D Z Akins, the bread, the meat, even the drink tasted like it was made a month ago.So 1 🌟 for Matt and the second 🌟for the quantity, 0 🌟 for quality.Sorry again, I dont know why everyone says it is so good or maybe it was just a bad day for me.

Dz Akins has been around a good long time. Last time i dined here was at least 20 years ago, and you know what? It hasnt changed.Youre getting old fashioned home style cooking, theres nothing fancy. Just big portions and good flavoring.They still have arguably the best pastrami in town, just have some on rye, or even better - make it Ruben.My gripes are this: for the prices I would at least expect the place to be in better shape. Hasnt changed in 20+ years. Seating is kinda run down and lumpy. Decor is just meh.Also, I was asked at least 4 times in the first 5 minutes of my arrival if I was ready to order. The menu is HUGE. So many choices. You gotta give people time. I was not offered any pickles or things to try like my adjacent neighbors wereOverall the whole experience was disappointing. The pastrami was memorable. Thats about it.

OMG 😳. Didnt even know you could order liverwurst sandwiches anywhere but you can here!!! And it was so good. Im an old soul that loves this kind food. The bagel eggs Benedict with lox was AMAZE as well. Love it!!! And the bakery? FUGIT ABOUT IT! So good. Go go go!

As a born and raised New Yorker, Im very picky about bagels, pastrami, and knishes. This Jewish deli may not be as good as the ones back home, but for San Diego, its pretty darn good. Their menu is huge, and so are their portions. I guarantee youll like anything you order from here. Just know youll need to season the food to your liking. Salt and pepper shakers are on the table for that. I always order matzo ball soup with a knish for pick up when I have a cold. I also always bring home a challah loaf, which my kids love. Once, I special ordered a chocolate babka, and it was not my favorite. It is literally the only thing from there I didnt like. Service is always top-notch. Parking can be challenging, but we have always found a spot.

This is an amazing place with fantastic food and huge portions! The chopped liver was fantastic! And the people are all so nice. But it is busy plan on getting there early if your meeting somebody because the parking is not simple. But its worth the wait! Enjoy!

I had a Reuben it was very tasty. The sandwich was very large. The potato salad was dry and tasteless. I also bought a blueberry scone it was delicious. The chocolate drizzled cookie was just ok. Ive had better cookies at 7-11. The total for the sandwich combo, scone and cookie was 25$. Way expensive.

This place is outstanding, high quality food.It’s a New York deli here in San Diego. In some ways much better than your typical NY Deli.The counter staff can be a bit slow when they are busy. The process for generating a bill is convoluted, slowing down the pick up process.But the food is truly above standard, a fine establishment for all things bakery and deli.

I got a craving, so I stopped at DZ Akins. Went in and said I wanted to order to go. Had to admit a menu. I then asked if I could sit at the table right by the hostess stand, I was told yes. My service dog tried to go under the table, but there wasnt room without moving all the chairs. He was about half way out and some employee said he cant be there to put him under the table or outside. She said this while walking past I replied that hes a service dog she yelled from a ways away Still take him out. I tried again to make room under the table, a waitress asked if I want something to drink. I asked if she could do a to-go order. She walked away without a word. Someone else from the hostess area called over that I had to go over there. I made a comment that employees here used to be friendly and polite. Got a scoff. I put the menu down and my unwelcome service dog and I left. This is really a shame. Ive been in San Diego for 28 years and loved DZ Akins the whole time. Actual customer service is becoming more and more uncommon. I thought a place with such great history and die hard fans would want to maintain their following. After 28 years I will think twice before going back. There is just no reason to be rude to someone you have never met, especially in the Service Industry.
