Daichan was recommended by my Japanese colleagues as “authentic” so I was very excited to try it. Absolutely loved everything about the place. The food and service were fantastic. I love eating at unassuming restaurants that focus on food and service vs trying to be fancy. It’s a small restaurant that gets very busy so you will need to be patient. Can’t wait to go back and try all the other dishes.

I’ve always been intrigued by the sign that reads “Japanese Soul Food “. I ventured in tonight, and was pleasantly surprised at the charm and vibe of the restaurant. Service was attentive and consistent. I asked for my server’s recommendation, and she told me to go with the combination pole bowl.It did not disappoint, the flavors were subtle yet bold and the sake selection was great.I will be back for sure and recommend this to anyone who is willing to stroll off the beaten path and have an amazing meal at a moderate price point.

The best japanese restaurant I have ever visited. The food is outstanding and also the service is great. We ate the fried tofu and curry based on her recommendation. It was so good that we came back and ordered the same dish again.

I first came to this place in early 2000s.. the food was AMAZING, service was amazing, decor was covering every square inch! It truly was a little escape off the Blvd... I moved out of state and we recently visited and I got some lunch. So sad, the service was lackluster and all the decor was almost gone :/ I came here with all those memories and it seems like its gone downhill. I hope theyre doing okay and get up to speed with service and how it used to be!!

This place is sooo good I had the pork katsu with curry. Cleaned the whole plate! It comes with rice. My friend got the Hawaiian roll and tried one you can never go wrong with spam. Of course I had to get some sehmi salmon fresh and very tasty. One of the best thing about this place is the look they have all shorts of cool stuff on the walls.

Hands down this is my favorite local haunt in LA. The staff here are so incredibly welcoming and kind and the interior, packed with Japanese art and other tchotchkes, provide a fun, casual ambiance to dine in. When I come here, I feel like I was invited over for dinner at someone’s home. The food is cooked with just as much care as their service. Their beef sukiyaki and katsu bowls are especially tasty and comforting - just the thing to eat after a long day. Other great menu items are their stuffed lotus root and coquette for starters, as well as their soba and poke bowls for something a little more refreshing on a hot day. If you haven’t been here, you absolutely need to check it out.

Yummy little restaurant with lots of character. It’s the hipster flip side to a minimalist restaurant. Walls covered in cool photos and posters, decorations, and all kinds of cool things and people to look at. I loved the variety of the menu and know I’ve gotta come back to try more things. Service was great. Even though there was a sign up, we got in pretty quickly. Got the udon and a sashimi over rice dish. I’d definitely come back. I want to try the katsu curry next time!

This places overrated! The food was okay, but the portions were tiny. The curry udon was okay, and its nothing extraordinary. Musashiya Udon in Westwood carries far superior curry udon. The Chirashi was, again, okay. But there were so few slices of fish as well as so little hijiki rice, which was not fresh at all. A bit disappointing... I thought the Hawaiian chicken was probably the best dish I ordered. The dish, unfortunately, already had soy sauce on the bottom of the plate where the chicken pieces sat on, and I usually dont like too much soy sauce on my food. It should have the sauce on the side, not under, the food. Persimmon tea was a bit different, not sweet and tasteless--I could not taste any persimmon. The most weird or unpleasant experience I had was when the owner lady wanted us to move to another table after we started eating. I told her that I minded but I will move if she insisted. Only then, she apologized and then proceeded to insist that we stay in our table. We were a bit confused, especially in light of the fact that no other large group came into the restaurant and needed our table to be put together with the next table for them. In other words, she did not need us to move, but she asked us to move for no apparent reason. I have never experienced this situation before in any restaurant. After we left, we continued to wonder why we were asked to move to another table. There were plenty of space, and there was no one asking for our table during lunchtime. The parking is valet, which was not attended when we arrived. But when we were inside the restaurant after we parked our car, the valet guy came and demanded $5 from me. Well, I moved the car to a meter adjacent to the parking lot and put 75 cents for 45 minutes. Valet is valid when its manned and valet actually parks the car, no? Otherwise, the sign should say $5 parking, not $5 valet! Just like the posting by the previous person on Google, stay away from this place because the service is horrible for what you pay and what you have to suffer for parking, especially when the food is not exactly that good.

I can not tell you, how much I love this place. I think it gets overlooked frequently because it’s on sushi row. I have been coming here for about 20 years. The food is always fresh and so good. I crave multiple dishes from time to time. Its honestly hard to pick my favorite. If you are looking for a local hidden gem, this is it!

Very quaint place w pretty interesting Japanese decor. Have no complaints about food or service. The waitresses were very nice and it was clean. Tried their Hawaiian garlic chicken, deep fried. It was delicious! Cold house sake was great with it as well.Parking is a hassle. It’s $5 valet or street parking is available if you find a spot.

We have been going to this restaurants for over 20 years. Gary and his wife, Yuka are very hard-working people, which has made this little, once known secret, a very popular place to visit- for a Japanese soul food. Gary makes a very special dish fore, I just cant get enough of.The restaurant is very unique and it does not seat many, is always crowded but the food is delicious and there is no such thing as a long wait.I would highly recommend this unique Japanese soul food restaurant to locals and tourists a like.Thank you both so much, Mark, Brandon & Daniel!

If you want authentic Japanese food, this is the place. I was very impressed by the quality and the attention to detail. We started with the spinach and sesame seed appetizer. Then we had the mixed tempura, which was cooked perfectly. We really liked the nori wrapped tofu appetizer. For the main course, we both went for the Daimyo Chirashi. I would have preferred it served in a bowl rather than a plate, but it was really delicious. Im picky about sushi rice and this place has it perfect. I think I will start frequenting this restaurant.

I really like homestyle no-frills Japanese food and this is the place to get it. I got the broiled mackerel and it was absolutely delicious - it was juicy and had a nice charcoaled crisp to it. The Japanese decor gives it a nice homey feel which was something else I enjoyed. I recommend coming here but it can be a long wait time if you go around dinner time.

Just came back from Hawaii. I must admit Daichan has the best Hawaii Japanese American foods than hawaii. So fresh and they make their original sauces. The best #poki in LA.When I first discovered this place over 18 years ago, I was so so excited. Dont know how I have missed this place before but I am incredibly glad I found it.Went here for the first time for pickup and ordered the Pork Katsu over rice with the Hijiki rice upgrade as well as the Croquette and purple potato tempura. The pork was incredibly tender and really well breaded, the rice was flavorful and filling. The tempura and Croquette were really great and I will definitely be trying out their other sides in the future. For the price the portion sizes were just right and I cant wait to try out their other dishes like the Unagi over rice.The inside was really cute and the service was really friendly, pickup was quite easy and quick. Parking was not bad as there were a few spots in the lot and getting in and out of the area was pretty easy.Will definitely be coming back and hopefully dining in at some point in the future.

Ive lived in studio city for 10+ years. This is my favorite restaurant in all of LA. Before I went vegetarian a few years ago I loved their poke bowl. Now I love their vegetarian poke bowl! Sugarfish is next door and gets all the love but dont sleep on this place. The food is excellent and a great sake selection. Its small so the wait can be long but you can head over to Stout for a beer while you wait. I usually park on the street. No resos so you need to get there to out your name in. Well worth it and wait staff is so friendly too. One of my favorite places for home style Japanese cuisine.2022 update - vaccine card required to done inside so please bring it. Sugarfish moved to the Sportsmans Lodge so its greatly freed up parking and traffic in that mall in general. Lovely staff and reasonable prices too

I wish I could’ve taken pictures of my meal. I had the tuna natto, cold tofu, cucumber bonito, and the yellowtail roll. This was my first time having natto, which is fermented soybean. The waitress warned me that most people aren’t a big fan of the smell or texture. She brought it out and it wasn’t as strong of a smell as I thought. It came with a quail egg in the center and I was instructed to add some soy sauce and store everything together. It was awesome - the quail egg was rich, the tuna was coated in the egg and nato, it was delicious. My dad got the sukiyaki bowl. The portion was huge, and it was just super comforting.For dessert, we had the dorayaki and mocha ice cream. It was also my first time having dorayaki. The dorayaki was warm and comforting.Altogether, we got seven items for $48! Great value, good service and environment, and fresh, comforting Japanese soul food. I definitely recommend this place to people who aren’t just into sushi. In that case, just go next door to Sugarfish.

This place is by far one of the best hidden gems in Los Angeles county. Any person who says that he likes Japanese food must come here. I am pretty sure that they are the first people to bring poki to Los Angeles. The ambiance in the place is in, The service is outstanding. Pricing is as fair as it could be. I am very happy that I found out about this place because I bring all of my guests from out of town when they come to visit. I would say this would be the ideal place for a date as well. parking may be a little bit of b*** because you have to pay for valet but it is not overpriced at all. Daichan has been one of my absolute favorites for the past 2 years and I keep coming back. I usually order something fish related (tuna poke soba or a poke bowl) and Im always please with the fish quality, the sauce distribution, the sushi rice - its always delicious! Of course during covid its been on and off in-dining, I always do takeout now. The ladies or workers behind the counter are always so pleasant and welcoming, and are very punctual with orders. Love this place and Im happy to see it surviving these crazy times!

I had the best meal here with my husband. We ordered the tempura, appetizer tofu, edamame, two mixed poke with special rice (I think it was $3 extra for special rice- totally worth it! I daydream dream about that delicious umami rice.) and some hot green teas. The service was excellent and the ambiance was very fun and vibrant. I wish I still lived in LA so I could come here more often but I will always come back to eat here when Im nearby.

Everything about this restaurant is great. The decor looks like someones Hawaiian-Japanese grandmothers basement (extremely charming) and the food is delicious. Our favorite menu item is the Chicken Katsudon. The croquettes and other appetizers are also very good.

Hands down local favorite on the East end of the Valley. Closest thing to Japanese Tokyo Cafe eats! Have been going here for years and find myself back within days of returning from Japan. Owned by Japanese couple who named the place after their son.The food is fresh and cooked to order. The menu is quite larfe and the food is delicious. A rare little Japanese restaurant amongst Studio City thats not actually a sushi place, but rather a more casual, traditional type of Japanese cuisine. Its definitely worth checking out.The food here is pretty good, although I wouldnt say its the best homestyle cooking Ive ever tried. After already visiting Japan twice as well as eating this kind of food in peoples homes, I can pretty much tell what is superb and whats close. Daichan, fortunately, is pretty close in taste. Here, Ive had the Japanese fried chicken, tuna poke bowl, grilled mackerel, and agedashi tofu on numerous visits.I definitely recommend this place. I can also appreciate the fact that the menu is so extensive and offers many kinds of Japanese foods rather than sushi or sashimi. So definitely take advantage of the cooked stuff instead of the raw fish, because you dont come here for sush

Love the food here. So many options to choose from. Udon, Poki bowls, sushi, terriyaki. The menu is so large and I havent had a bad meal here once. Highlight of the meals is their Poki bowl, dont confuse it with Poke though. Its raw fish over rice with lettuce and seaweed, a little spice to it. During peak lunch and dinner the place is crowded so be sure to plan for a wait since the dining area is not very large.

Although this restaurant is unique in the Decour and very quaint the food needs a lot of help. The sushi was quite sub par and a little on the fishy side. My friend got a soba noodle dish and it was tasteless. I know they get quite crowded often but I don’t see why won’t be going back anytime soon sorry.

After my trip to Japan, Ive been searching for good, homemade, or authentic Japanese food. My boyfriend told me about this place and we finally came here for dinner.Its a cute, homey cafe/restaurant. Its decorated with a lot of Japanese paintings, ornaments, and decorations. Its also very small and has about 10 tables or so. The menu is pretty extensive and has sushi, sashimi, udon, curry, and other traditional dishes.FYI, this place is always crowded! Be prepared to wait at least 30 min for a table.What we ordered:*Mix Poke Bowl with Hikiji Seaweed Rice - Delicious! I love poke and I could tell that the fish is fresh. I felt that the extra $2 for the hijiki seaweed rice was totally worth it. It adds more flavor to the dish.*Chicken Katsu Curry - This dish was good. The curry sauce was thick and slightly sweet. Generous portions.Parking is hard to find. There s a very small lot thats shared with Sugarfish. They also have valet. If you park on the streets, make sure you read the signs very closely.Overall, this is a good authentic Japanese restaurant that serves homemade food. I would come back and try some other dishes.

Restaurant was extremely popular, there was a bit of wait on a Friday night. valet parking. we had black fish w miso & tofu, chirashi, and stuffed lotus root. best dish has to be the fish. fish was well executed, even tofu was Great. the raw fish in chirashi was fresh, lotus root was also good. price is not cheap, but reasonable.

This place is very small and cute. They make really tasty Japanese comfort foods. Everyone really enjoyed the Inari sushi (sweet rice and tofu). My favorite dish is the curry udon. We also liked the chicken katsu curry and the unagi donbury. Parking can be difficult, but there is a valet and some meters.

You can taste each piece of fish within this bowl and savor it in different ways. Its a delicate item with many different complimentary flavors. Every piece works on its own or together in this magical bowl. Every item is great, I just havent been able to get something other than the poki bowl because its so good.Atmosphere: Great decorations, I dont think there is one empty wall space in this restaurant.
