Amazing little sushi restaurant, literally a hidden gem of Palo Alto since its not on the street front but hidden behind in an alley.Super fresh fish and the chef delicately dresses up every single piece of nigiri keeping the flavors in mind.The uni was one of the freshest weve had in the bay area and some of the other stars included kanpachi, Shima aji, kin medai, sake to, Umi masu and of course the toro!
Excellent selection of sushi. Excellent sashimi. The waiter was also super cool and super knowledgable about the menu. We had some super super awesome cuts of fish that were insanely good. Defenitely recommend going to this place.
Excellent, small sushi place with outdoor and indoor seating. Call to make a reservation as it tends to be booked up quickly. Had option for gluten free soy sauce and can accommodate allergens, although some dishes cant be fully celiac friendly. Omakase sushi options, rolls, handrolls, Nigri and sashimi available and delicious. Good selection of sake too. Super sushi restaurant.

Overall: super fresh, super tasty (can be expensive)FOOD: omg, wow. So good . Every piece of nigiri was absolutely amazing. We had an assortment of fish and seriously, every single piece was delicious. My favorites were the toro, uni, salmon belly. But seriously all were great. I have to say that I was very impressed by how fresh everything was and the presentation of the food was still excellent.LOCATION/SERVICE: a little hard to find lol. Its like in an alley and I only found it because of a sidewalk sign. The restaurant was clean and had great service. People there were very friendly and on top of it. We got our food quickly.Would recommend if looking for delicious sushi and willing to pay
Wow, Daigo is most definitely one of my absolutely favorite sushi restaurants ever. The quality of fish is extraordinarily fresh & the sushi chefs are extremely talented. My boyfriend and I came here to celebrate our one year anniversary and Daigo did not disappoint! We started off with the hamachi shooters and they were so delicious! We then ordered the 12 piece Omakase platter and man... it was some of the best fish Ive ever eaten in my life. We will definitely be back for our next special occasion 😊

This place is tucked away in Palo Alto and had a really delicious omakaze! My boyfriend and I each got a set with a different nigiri at the end, his wagyu and mine uni. What we both really enjoyed was how meaty each slice of fish was. They certainly didn’t skimp on their portions of sashimi. And the Hamachi shots were a great way to start the meal too! Hopefully we’ll be able to make another trip out once it’s safe to soon.

Came in on a weeknight. The service staff appeared to be rushing us to finish our sushi dinner. The menu was worn out and staff couldnt help us much when we asked what were the specials. Ordered the dinner set and I didnt think the sushi was worth the price.

Love how it is tucked away in a corner. We sat outside (3 people) and we ordered a good amount of food and it came very timely and the quality was awesome. Love some UNAGI but my personal favorite was the sweet potato roll. Crispy texture on the outside and not too much rice made this super yummy. Will definitely come again and try more food and sake!

Had the Omakase a few days ago, which should give me the best interpretation of the nigiri they serve. Had sushi around the world, including Japan, so based on reviews below, had high expectations. The fish appeared and tasted fresh and expertly cut. Service was great.However, as others have noted, the portion was small for the price and the quality. My biggest issue was the lack of variation in the dressing and the flavoring on the pieces of fish. Typically, a sushi chef for an Omakase would want to show off the diversity of flavoring (soy, ginger, sea salt, etc.) to pair with or bring out the natural flavor of that raw fish/seafood. I found the chefs flavoring to be one-note, seemed the same for each piece of sushi. Didnt quite get what was the intent, and certainly didnt accentuate the natural flavor of the fish/seafood. Would also prefer a variety of textures, which can be done with different seafood or with different flavorings (e.g., sea salt crunch, seaweed, citrus zest, etc.). IMO, too much $ for what you get.
Nice cozy place with great service. The Salmon citrus is a must have. Also, Salmon crudo was delicious. Recommend making reservations. Would visit again!
This place was great! My wife and I have been to a handful of sushi places in the area and this one hit the spot! The waitress was very helpful and attentive, and overall the service was fast and excellent. We ordered several rolls and enjoyed all of them. They have a good selection of options but without being overwhelming. The presentation, freshness, and taste were great, especially for a pretty reasonable price. Well definitely be going back. The place is small but very well decorated and clean. Its a small hidden gem.

Found this gem tonight, on a single search. Our group of 2 wanted to eat 🍣 sushi outdoors. This popped up. Called them, and booked a table for just an hour later. They were accommodating letting us switch outdoor tables, all are heated. The food was really good, i got the Nigiri dinner and it was all different Nigiri, all really good. The menu insists that soy sauce isnt needed, and indeed I ate all without any sauce. We also had the red bean ice cream 🍨.
Cant believe we are just now discovering Daigo. Thanks to Google for suggesting it for dinner this past Wednesday. They were able to squeeze us in for a walk in, but we will definitely make reservations next time. Would not be afraid to do omakase here or ask for sake suggestions as well. I had taken Advil, but looking forward to some sake next time.Service is excellent, not only are they graceful at serving and clearing, they were spot on and very helpful with suggestions. The agedashi tofu was some of the best we have had in awhile, excellently fried, not greasy or oily, and generous portions. Chicken karaage was equally generous in portion and well done, but we didnt love the meat.We have been resigned to fishy fish in the peninsula, even our standby Tomo Sushi when we get desperate. But now that we have found Daigo, (again, cant believe we didnt know about this place and the area in general, since we have tried everything nearby) no more settling for fishy smelling fish.We ordered several rolls, everything was fresh (something we thought just wasnt possible in the peninsula) I particularly liked the pickled jalapeno in one of their rolls (reminds me of a common Korean pickle, pickling vegetables in a dark soy sauce brine, i think its called a Jjang ah chi)The unagi Nigri was the freshest tasting we have had since EN brasserie in NYC (they flew live eels in and I got to touch one!).
Price well deserve, must come! So full after the meal! Yum yum. Bravo!

Celebrated a special birthday with my date here. Sushi was delicious, we combined a rolls with an assortment of sashimi. The server guided us expertly.Magical night was capped by the servers surprising us with green tea cheese cake.Location is charming, quaint and suited us and our celebration beautifully.We will be back soon!
Super authentic and good. This place has incredible quality sushi and while a little pricey isnt completely crazy for sushi. The quality of their fish is really great. I really like to start sushi with Miso soup (just a personal habit) and even that was really good. Will definitely be back.

Great nigiri. The uni and chutoro are top notch. Salmon and hirame almost very good.Skip the salmon avocado roll - avocado wasn’t ripe. Sometimes the rice is inconsistent. Amaebi was a bit veiny for my liking - guess I got an unlucky piece.

This place is absolutely outstanding. They have super premium sushi (from the daily menu) if you are willing to pay a bit more, as well as cheaper, more-standard options as well. I like to have a bit of both — the expensive stuff for the pleasure, the cheaper stuff to fill my big stomach :)Do ask them for recommendations! They really know their stuff.
Very good. Clam appetizer and urchin+roe nigiri were excellent. Fish was fresh with good variety. Soy sauce seasoned with dashi was a nice touch. Friendly staff. Didnt like the the fact that nigiri was served on brown rice: while rice was cooked well, it didnt stand up to chopsticks and grains still stiff enough to texture clash with the fish. 12pcs omakase was $82. Worth a try nonetheless.

Got takeout. Total ripoff, even for Palo Alto. Nigiri should come in sets of two at these prices. The shrimp tempura temaki was a flimsy feather. Two miso soups for $7 were good. Quality overall was good. $65 to fill up two people 1/3 of the way or less. Outrageous

Daigo had good sushi, great atmosphere, and great alcohol. All of the fish was fresh, and I enjoyed every roll. This place is more of the traditional idea of sushi. I would consider the rolls to be on the simpler side which lets the fish stand out, but that also means none of the rolls especially stood out. I would still visit if only to eat in the cute hole-in-the-wall-feeling restaurant.
The sushi here was really good! Aside from the amazing food, the ambiance of the outdoor seating was also very nice, with effective heaters and cute decorative lights. Would probably be a great place for a date night!
Really, really good restaurant. Cute little place tucked in a back corner of California avenue. Rolls are delicious - notably, they use this super nutty brown rice on everything. Particularly good miso soup and green tea. Affordable and fast too. Will be coming back!
Ordered takeout dinner and expected that it would taste worse than dine in, but it turned out to be much worse. Have ordered takeouts from other Bay Area sushi restaurants, and this was the worst. It was like grabbing some sushi boxes from a grocery store, except the price was way higher.
High end sushi restaurant. Just four tables and a few seats at the bar. You are paying for quality fish. I recommend you let them choose for you. Drowning your sushi in soy sauce is frowned upon. The Zen of the sushi experience is in the restraint and simplicity along with the freshest ingredients.
Terrible customer service. Overpriced sushi, not worth the money or time. Came in 45 minutes before closing and was denied service on a perfectly fine and busy night. While there were plenty of tables that had still yet to order, we were forced to turn around and go back home without any hesitation or hospitality. I guess theres no such thing as southern hospitality around these parts in California.
This is the best sushi I’ve had in the U.S. I lived in Japan for 4 years and ate sushi/sashimi several times/week. 2 of us split the larger omakase, Erynga tempura, miso and edamame. The omakase is better than any of the extremely expensive places in San Francisco at 1/3 the price. The sushi is on par with the best I’ve had in Japan. The ambiance is good; simple light colored wood, quiet, understated, like a solid place in Japan. Service was outstanding. Our waiter was a young guy from Japan so the manners and customs were spot on. It’s now our go to place for great sushi. Skip the pretentious needlessly expensive places in San Francisco. Overall, highly recommended. Pros: best sushi and sake Ive had in the Bay so far, very kind and knowledgeable waiters, intimate yet casual. Cons: quite expensive (paid $85/person for a 9-piece omakase, 3-piece sashimi, a shared roll and sake, all included), ambience/chopsticks/napkins/other details do not match the price tag, may need to wait for a while (we waited for 15 min at 8:15pm). Attire smart casual. Great for a date, OK for a first date. Similar quality to Kyosho, otherwise much better than other sushi restaurants in Palo Alto (e.g. Kanpai).

Checked out this place on a quiet Sunday during their soft open. Second branch of a popular SF spot. Wait staff was lovely and attentive and the co-owner was so welcoming and friendly, recommending a perfectly clean tasting sake and making us feel as if wed sat down to dinner at a friends house (who just happens to make amazing sushi). Sashimi was delicious and fresh, flown in from Japan daily! They will add omakase and other specials eventually. Rolls were on point, good balance of filling v. rice, great flavor, and easy to fit in my mouth. Get the tamago too, it was just oozing with umami. We got comped a tasty green tea cheesecake for dessert! All in all a satisfying meal and Im looking forward to making this my regular sushi spot.

Expensive, but if you love high quality sushi, this is the best in the area. They clearly have excellent fish suppliers who have some unusual catches.
Lots of wasted potential.Their fish is really good and high quality. However they completely messed up the sushi rice. Seems more like Chinese rice, than the sushi rice cooked Japanese style. The rice takes away from the sushi experience. If you just want to have Sashimi then its probably OK.Their Agedashi tofu was also sub par.

Excited to see a SF place open up in PA. The lunch menu is limited to a few cooked and sashimi sets, plus some nigiri and maki. Service was friendly and fast.I would save your lunch money ($26 for 8 PC sashimi lunch set) for a nicer omakase meal or to try a wider variety of their sushi and specialties (hamachi shot recommended!) only offered at dinner.

Finally authentic nigiri and sashimi in Palo Alto. Daigo replaces long time favorite and casual takeout spot Homma’s Brown Rice sushi with a more upscale and traditional sushiya experience. Despite not being Japanese run, Daigo impresses with an extensive specials menu (rivals Gintei in San Bruno) and solid knife skills. Nigiri are priced per piece which means prices can add quickly but that you can also sample a lot of variety.Tip: order from the specials menu or choose among a variety of Omakase specials where the chef will choose.
Jeezus this place is so good. Best $$ sushi restaurant Ive been to in the past year. Everything is just amazing. Just get them all. Planning to come back here again tomorrow.

With its minimalist decor, traditional Japanese aesthetics, and soft lighting, Daigo provides a serene and intimate dining atmosphere.The service at Daigo is impeccable. The staff is not only attentive but also incredibly knowledgeable about Japanese cuisine and the menu offerings. They patiently guided us through the menu, explaining the ingredients and preparation techniques every time they served the Omakase menu.Coming to our food for the night, we order an Omakase UNI and as well WAGYU, wrapping that up with the Cheesecake and ice-cream. The Omakase menu is definitely crafted with fresh sources of seafood and served in a pristine fashion. Each course was filled with flavors and textures that we definitely would crave and expect from authentic Japanese cuisine and as well the presentation was super artful. Every dish was a testament to the chefs dedication to excellence.Daigo falls on the higher end of the price spectrum, but its a place where youre paying for the quality and authenticity of the dining experience. 2023-05-04 23:01:00The nigiris and sushi rolls were really good, except for the fried tuna roll which was pretty bad. I was unimpressed by the fish collar which was a bit dry.We sat outside under the gazebo, but it got windy and cold towards the end, even with the stoves on.

Last evening’s dinner was significantly subpar compared to the meals I’ve enjoyed here over the past 4 years. The atypical presentation I noticed included: otoro nigiri was dressed with quite a bit of soy sauce (usually has none) which detracted from its natural flavor and the sushi rice was cold (not mouth temperature). I noticed the sushi rice in the maki rolls also had soy sauce and the fish itself was cold (like it had been too close to / too long on ice). You can see the evidence of soy sauce in the uploaded photos (especially the light brown color of the rolls).I’ve never seen this inconsistency before, and I’m really hoping it was just a one-off bad night but the experience was off putting enough that I will carefully read the newest reviews here before dining at Daigo again (sadly).

2022-05-15 03:28:58Daigo is such an amazing place! The sushi is so delicious! Everything is super fresh. We simply could not stop ordering, and everything was so incredibly delicious. You do have to make a reservation though. They do not take walk-ins, the place is small with limited seating.

2022-07-04 03:55:42Good sushi dinner tucked away on Cal Ave. We especially enjoyed the two special fishes; the mackerel was well marinated in a vinegar to lessen the intensity of the fish flavor and the white fish was delicate and firm in texture. The nigiri in the dinner set were pretty basic, I felt the price was quite high for one piece per order as opposed to two. Fish to rice ratio on the lower side, personally I prefer higher. Id probably skip the appetizers and sets next time.

It was a little cold, but the space offered protection against the wind and heat lamps for warmth.Daigo offers fresh sashimi with changing daily specials. We ordered omakase (chefs recommendation) and fell in love with the restaurant at first bite! The tenderness and flavor of each nigiri piece were amazing. We asked our server what his favorite fishes were, and we ordered them if they were not already included in the omakase. Absolutely amazing recommendations!Parking was easy and free in a nearby public garage.110% would recommend anyone with a sushi addiction!

2022-05-29 05:00:10A curious sushi spot tucked in an alleyway in Palo Alto. Delicious sushi and great sake selections 🍣. My favorite is the sweet uni from Japan that melts in your mouth. They dont have a website but they are reachable via phone or chat for reservations. Very friendly staff. Also green tea ice cream is a must try.
