The BEST SUSHI in Dana Point - and in the OC that I’ve ever had! I loved how you can taste the freshness of the fish with each bite. The flavors of each roll were so delicately balanced and well seasoned that I did not even need to dip each piece in the soy sauce on the side. Every order we tried was unique in its flavor profile and kept you wanting to take another bite. I like how they use a thin layer of rice with the rolls and were generous in their portions of the fish/other ingredients. I LOVED every single item we ordered and especially the Yellowtail Carpaccio and the Jeff Special no-rice roll. Their Matcha Ice Cream and Coppa Pistachio desserts were both wonderful and not too sweet! 10/10 would recommend! Visited once during lunch and during dinner and at both times the service was fast and the servers were so friendly and knowledgeable. Will definitely keep coming back when I’m in the area.

🍣 🍣 🍣 🍣 🍣Five Stars ⭐️ Restaurant!While visiting California, we found out this place close to Dana Point. We were here for Lunch on a Monday 7/3/2023.Literally out of this world. Best sushi I have ever had (considering restaurants in the same price range). We had 2 rice rolls, 1 salmon crispy rice and a no rice roll. In all of them, the fish was fresh, the color of the dishes with the combination of the ingredients was so inviting. And finally every bite was delicious.Total bill was $84 considering 20% tip. Each roll is around $16-$18 with 8 pieces each.If I ever go to California again, I will definitely come back. Probably will try more of the no rice rolls and nigiri which should be great with the fish so fresh.

Dana Kai is a go to for flavorful rolls! They have their “no rice rolls” which I highly recommend. The quality of their fish is great so having no rice allows you to appreciate it even more. It’s a chill vibe and service is always good. This is definitely one of my favorite sushi places in Dana Point!

My two kids love sushi and Dana Kai is a family favorite. The staff is always super friendly and the service is stellar. We love the specialty rolls and always get an order of Collar. The garlic edamame is amazing to start with.

I like this place primarily for their no rice rolls. Their Daniel and Jeff special rolls are amazing! A little pricey at $18 per roll, but worth it since they have no rice and are packed with goodness and flavor. Service is excellent, atmosphere is nice. Will be back!

Ordered some noodles and 4 rolls. The noodles were solid. The rolls were not… so heavy on sauce you can’t taste the fish, felt like very Americanized sushi.The servers were nice, did overcharge us but fixed it quick.

I have been eating here 2-3 times a month for about 4 years. I absolutely love this place! Everyone is so friendly and the staff takes such good care of their customers. The rolls are so good! You can get more traditional rolls or you can get fancy rolls — all are great. I place pickup orders all the time and they are almost always right on time! In the rare instances they’re running behind you’ll be offered a drink and a seat while you wait :) Dana Kai is the best sushi around and definitely the best service! Keep it up!

I didnt think it possible that Lunch could be as good as their Dinner experience, but Dana Kai delivers every time! So much care and attention to the quality of the sushi and the overall dining experience. When I am traveling and eating sushi elsewhere, I realize that it always pales in comparison to Dana Kai! This place is top notch and always a great value for the super high quality food. The owners are always involved and ensure that everyone leaves with a positive experience. I cant wait to come back again soon!

This place has pretty decent food. The fish quality was very nice. The service needs some work. The waitress made us circle everything we wanted on a paper menu; even non-sushi items. She would not take the order verbally. It was a little strange, and they still forgot part of our order. They were pretty accommodating after I brought it to their attention.Despite the sushi being very good, I felt that it was not made very well. The sushi kinda fell apart.

We really enjoyed our sushi here. It was very fresh and well prepared. We had the crazy monkey rolls and they were great. We also enjoyed the rainbow rolls and tuna sushi we had. However, Dana Kai is a little pricey with our bill hitting around a hundred bucks. However, good sushi is not cheap. An enjoyable meal!

The food and the atmosphere are great. Tea is great too. The service seemed to have a little trouble when we were there and we had some confusion about pricing but beyond that everything was great and they were fast to adjust. It was crowded too so it honestly wasnt their fault. Prices are a bit high so this is more for date night or night out kind of sushi rather than casual sushi. Definitely worth it tho. Just double check on the seasonal pricing before you order :)

Great meal every time. Nicole is great. Actually all of the staff has been great. Everything so far has been fresh and delicious. Our favorites are the spicy tuna crunchy hand rolls and the carpaccio sushi is yummy. And the Yakisoba is fantastic if your not in the mood for fish. Definitely the best sushi weve had since moving to San Juan Capistrano.

In a nutshell, one of a kind sushi experience and extremely friendly staff, including the chefs.The place is Japanese-run meaning the food is authentic and tasty. I’ve had the best sushi here, easily comparable to and even surpassing the highest-end places I’ve been to in the neighboring L.A.Interior has a good vibe and is Japanese-themed, with plenty of space to sit and socialize without bothering your neighbors. The place never had wait times.Throw in modest prices and a great happy-hour (3-5 pm 7 days a week) selection and it easily puts Dana Kai on top of my go-to places for Japanese food.

Picked up food tonight for 3 people. $80 worth of food, and only one things was edible. The Special Eel Roll was great. The Spicy Tuna Hand roll was over the top spicy. Did the bottle of pepper spill into the mixture? WOW! Not edible. The Spicy Poke roll was also WAY WAY too spicy..inedible.Baked scallop roll was just OK.. Kind of cheesy mac and cheese kind of thing with over-cooked baby scallops over a Cal. roll. Eh. Would not order from here again, sorry.

I see some negative reviews, so I dont know if things have changed or if Ive just been lucky, but the couple times Ive gone have been phenomenal. The sliced fish sashimi was so fresh and the staff was super friendly. The sushi was above average, and the selection was good. Some of the prices are on the higher side, but others are very fairly priced.

I don’t give too many negative (or neutral 3 is neutral to me) but here we go. The location is awesome and easy to get to from anywhere in the Dana Point / Laguna Niguel area. Minimal wait time and clean establishment. The food was pretty darn good. The table we were seated at wobbled and so did the one behind us and to our left so changing seats was not an option. The service was sub par on ever level. The restaurant had all of 8 people in it and 3 sushi chefs, it took 50 minutes before we received cucumber salads. And another 40 before receiving the 1st of 3 hand rolls.I refuse to recommend other restaurants in reviews, because that is flat rude, but there plenty of close options with way better service in the area.

Used to go here all the time. Came Im early (5:15) NYE and very disappointed. Sat at Sushi bar for 10 minutes, offered no drinks, had to ask for ginger, no one started our order which sat on the counter for 8 minutes so we left. I highly recommend staying away from Dana kai during covid on a Friday. Even with inside seating at 25% capacity it was full. Took a long time to get order after we were seated in the parking lot under a tent. We sat for 33 minutes before we got water and were able to order 17 minutes later. They are overwhelmed right now. The staff is trying but with the amount of takeout orders and outdoor expansion they cant keep up.

Great sushi, family orientated, romantic, relaxed atmosphere, good location, lots of parking, wheel chair & disability friendly, staff is first class very friendly. The place is very clean. Dana Kai is VERY consistent with their sushi & food. My favorite rolls are the Popcorn Lobster Roll, Fire Crunch Roll & Spicy Tuna. The Yellow Tail Collar is delicious too. They also have a big flat screen TV that is easy to watch sports or whatever no matter where you sit in the restaurant.

Before entering the store, I already noticed there is a lunch menu on the website so I expect I also get that in store. The host did not mention anything related to the lunch menu but just handed me the regular full price menu. After I asked for the lunch menu, she said that the lunch time has end. I then ask when is the lunch time end, and she answered 2:30pm, arguing I am 1 minute late.Super arrogant host.

They have the nicest presentation of any restaurant for to-go packages (which as anyone will tell you during the pandemic is super important) hands down...especially if you are going to make a lasting impression that is worthy of turning a first time customer into a repeat customer. My girlfriend and I love right around the corner from this place and we love it. The restaurant is full of welcoming staff and they serve you QUICK! You will not need to search for a server because they get to you in a hurry. I would strongly recommend the mountain roll. All of their rolls are really delicious though and frequently they will offer some edamame on the house. If you are looking for a sake bomb, you can get one but you have to buy a miniature carafe of sake and individually order the beers. The effect is the same just a little less straight forward. They have many specials to choose from and the classics as well. They are somewhat pricy but I would say fairly comparable to any other true sushi restaurant.

I placed a to go order for lunch. A chirashi bowl, gyudon and a poke bowl. Order was promptly ready. However, Fish quality was below my threshold and gyudon was flooded with mayo. Poke tasted like Korean sweet and sour chilli sauce, chogochoojang. I have had better ones before. They need to fundamentally rethink their recipes for long term survival.
