Very cute place for sushi in a casual setting. We ordered a bunch of appetizer and they were both aesthetically beautiful and tasty. Highlights were the Dash Taco for visuals and Cartilage Karage for taste. For sushi, we ordered the crunchy roll and the sakura roll. The former was really good but the latter was a bit disappointing.Overall great food, service, and price - would come back again.

First time here. Ordered two types of nigiri and both were underwhelming, dont know if it was a one off incident. The rice was not properly sticking to the nigiri piece, and fell apart as soon as we picked them up. The nigiri slices were very thin too. The shishito was decent and you cant really go wrong with it. The aburi saba was decent and nothing special. The good ones were the ika-uni and the baked scallops tapas but too tiny portions. price point was high for everything given the quality in general was average . I would not be overly eager to return.

5/21/23:Another excellent meal. Tried the Seared Tataki Tacos, on a deep fried bed of seaweed. Tasted great, but hard to handle. Also tried the Tataki Bruschetta, topping is great, but would prefer a thinner can crispier piece of bread. Still loving the Crunch Roll, and Nigiri was also excellent.Prior:Super fresh and tender sushi, attentive staff, and unique TAPAS, are the reasons for NEEDING to visit this establishment. Julie greeted us at the door, and were seated immediately (Wed, 5pm). Physical menus were presented when we asked (QR photo below), drinks and Edamame were served immediately. There are 2 seating areas inside, making it the areas feel cozy and inviting.Even the traditional simple sushi choices felt upscale relative to most places Ive eaten. The chef does an exceptional job of putting his special twist on nearly everything served. Our Sake, Unagi sashimi was quite fresh and tender. Even California Rolls were delicious. The Crunch Roll will now be my goto Roll here at Dash, awesome. We also asked got an order of Julies favorite Tapas, the Baked Baby Scallop. It wasnt our favorite, but it presented really well. Hope to try the Ahi Tuna Bruschetta next time. Its hard to show restraint when ordering since everything looks so good.5+ Stars for this sushi/tapas restaurant. Already looking forward to my next visit.

Visited DASH for a friends birthday dinner without a reservation on a Wednesday night. We didnt have to wait long and were seated pretty quickly. The space is pretty small but didnt feel too cramped even though there it was pretty busy at the time.My friend ordered salmon sashimi and Kaisen Don while I got Chirashi.The difference between the Kaisen Don and the Chirashi is that the Kaisen Don includes the daily specials of fish so its always changing, and the Chirashi will always be salmon/shrimp/egg/scallop/tuna/yellowtail. It came with a salad.I enjoyed my meal and the way they seasoned the rice and my friend did too, but we both agreed that the pricing was a bit high for what we got.Overall I would return again. I would probably want to try their shareable plates next time as they seem to be what this place is well known for.

Each piece of fish is expertly prepared and served with just the right amount of wasabi. But what really stood out to me were the tapas. The variety of options is impressive, and each one is bursting with flavor. I particularly enjoyed the Iku Uni Himo which was elevated by a few drops of white truffle oil. We came here for a date night when we couldnt find a sushi restaurant that would seat us. We were lucky to get in without a reservation, but didnt know what to expect. We were blown away by the unique style of meals, the quality of their fish, and the portions. For a tapas style Japanese restaurant, the prices and size of meals were very reasonable. The staff was also very attentive even though the restaurant was packed. This is probably one of our favorite sushi restaurants in San Mateo. I highly recommend coming!

Service is impeccable and the food is good. It feels a bit expensive price wise but that might just be the standard for the area. However despite the price it is impeccable quality. They also have daily specials based off what they get from the fish market. The menu is via QR code and the staff is very efficient. I really enjoyed this place.

Always a treat whenever we come in on weekends. Takeout can be a hit or miss, so I recommend avoiding that unless you want one of their non-sushi options. Service is great and the food is some of the best. Lots of creative options with classics done really well. Been coming here for years and dont plan to stop anytime soon

UpdateI drive back to Bay Area for about 7 hours because I miss Dash’s dishes so much!!Still love everything I ordered. I didn’t order any sashimi because I don’t think it fits my taste, and uni is just average.Lamp chop is not as good as before because it’s too greasy.Definitely recommend!The shouyu beef is so fresh and taste really good!They have a great and special menu which combines the salmon & tuna and avocado 🥑, the taste is fantastic.Love love love!!!! Definitely better than the other sushi places!!!!!! The best sushi place around the area in my opinion :-)

If you want authentic Japanese food but can’t afford a trip to Japan? Then this is the spot for you! Sometimes going to a regular sushi spot doesn’t give you that full experience of enjoying Japanese dishes, so Dash has you covered. I strongly recommend getting their Unagi Don with fresh nigiri alongside it.

If you like fresh and high quality sushi and food, this place is the one for you. I celebrated my wife birthday there and this place was the perfect place for us. The food and the atmosphere are nice. The sushi and sashimi are so fresh and tasty. The tapa food are small but they are truly yummy. The customer service is also great. Highly recommended! I will definitely go there again.

The fired chicken with bone is great! Tuna towel is also good. Other is ok. We order 5 pieces omakase, only one of them is good. Others are just ok. A bit pricey but lots of sushi and tapas to choose. Not big fan of the only draft beer, the suntory. House sake is ok. Service is ok.

Salmon, shrimp, 2 other white fish, and lightly seared tunaKobe beef very thinly sliced with a very gentle sear. Tasty, but I prefer Kobe plain to fully enjoy the beef flavors.Forgot to mention the fresh wasabi, yum.All the fish was fresh, well prepared, and tasty. Food was good, nigiris were fresh albeit small. The mentaiko udon and agedashi tofu tapas were well done, and omakase was enjoyable. Nabes are overcooked so probably wouldn’t do that again. Food also came out quickly so that was great. The seating was spacious and comfortable.However service was very much lacking. No one came to us to check on anything after food was served. We had to keep calling them over for spoons and bowls. Despite this lack of service, there was a 18% tip that was automatically included in the bill for 4 adults and 2 toddlers under two years old. We would have given a 20% anyway in any good Japanese restaurant so the % wasn’t an issue, it was that the service was nonexistent and yet a mandatory tip was included for a small group.

This place completely blew me away in expectations. They are not trying to be a gaudy, flashy Japanese tapas and sushi place and it shows in their dishes. The nigiri focuses on the quality of the fish and hearty molding of the piece rather than flashy decorations. Now, the price point is a bit more on the “high-end” side but not too unreasonable. Just don’t expect to get anything else than literally the plate of the sushi. No miso soups, no appetizers, nothing.Will definitely return. Of course with more money!

4.5 stars, been here at least once per month for the last 6. The food is really solid, ambience is nice, and you never feel rushed. Chefs and the serving team are great, and very friendly. Sashimi and tempura (nice and light) the stand outs. Only slight drawback is that they can be victims of their own success..so busy you sometimes have to wait to order/pay your check etc.Definite go.

The place was fairly busy for a Tuesday night, got seated quickly but did not get offered water for almost 10 minutes. The food took awhile to come out and while there were some highlights (dash taco and unagi fried rice), the other stuff was just ok. The nigiri are SUPER small, so when I pay $20 for toro, it just doesn’t feel worth. Also the uni on top of the oyster doesn’t work, you don’t actually taste the uni at all

Simply amazing. We had over 26 different dishes and there wasnt a single one that we did not like. Everything was fresh, especially the Chefs special sashimi. They were prepared perfectly. They dont source their fish from restaurant depots, or food outlet so expect the price here to be higher.Another unique thing about DASH is they have fresh made wasabi (its a more mild but more flavorful taste). Their oysters had a slight kick but taste amazing. Some must try hot dish are their Udon (tapas portion), butter seasoning mushrooms, spicy peppers, and their boil egg custard is flavorful. Their seafood soup comes in a small pot and small sauce size dish for you to slowly sip it. I found their seafood soup and egg custard to have similar taste, so I would go for their boil egg custard.Staff here are very friendly and even though we were seated tucked away in the corner, they checked on us every so often to make sure our tea was filled.

Seems like a relative newcomer. Izakaya restaurants are all over downtown San Mateo, so competition is steep. Food was pretty good, no wait at all, clean place thats quiet and great for couples and small groups. However, the servers seemed confused about items on their own menu and made a lot of mistakes on the orders at the tables around us. I think with time and practice, they can make this into a five-star restaurant.

The sushi was good, but nothing special. My friends and I actually wanted to go to a sushi place around the corner, but the wait was 2 hours (It mustve been good). The side dishes and non-sushi food we had were not good at all. The service was very poor. It was the gentlemans first night (At least he claimed) but the young lady actually serving us was just as bad. On many different accounts she forgot to bring us what we had asked for. Next time Ill wait the 2 hours at the other place or visit another of the many sushi restaurants around the block.

Great dining. Ended up getting, the A5 Wagyu Capacio which was very flavorful and had me savoring every bite. Fresh fish, but incredibly overpriced for it. Since having the $38 omakase at Amami, I can no longer eat more expensive versions that leave me hungry. These were meager slices of fish, yet priced at $48. With a seaweed salad on the side this meal was way more than I wanted to pay for something that made me crave a sandwich after. I appreciate the quality, way higher than anything else downtown, but the value is still off.

Dash is my new favorite Japanese restaurant since we recently moved to the Bay Area. After traveling to Japan last year I had not had sushi rice of the same quality until I dined at Dash. They quality of their food is outstanding and they also introduce unique fusion dishes that may not be traditional but are delicious none the less. They use local ingredients but also get a lot of their fish from the fish markets in Japan. If youre in the Bay Area and like Japanese food you must try Dash!

We ordered almost $100 worth of food for two people but were not even half way full. It was way too expensive and portions are very small. We ordered one edamame, three nigiris, one sashimi, one wagyu beef tapas and one mushroom tapas.Staff were friendly but they didnt do great at giving advice about meals.And also they had a heating problem which we were freezing, some other tables were too hot so they let the door open.

Our favorite Sushi restaurant in San Mateo. We found this place near when it first opened and have frequented it often since. The menus great, the staffs super friendly and the ambiance is hip and intimate and very refreshing for downtown San Mateo where most places are a lot more old-school, not thoughtful about decor or just sterile.

Before entering Dash, a sign on the door states clearly that they don’t serve “Americanized” sushi rolls. It is small & cozy restaurant, with dimmed lights, perfect for a date with a special person that you clearly want to impress.We started our meal of with a seaweed salad and then moved to more exotic and sophisticated pieces. We started with white fish wrapped with pears and dipped in a special sauce, then moved to the Nigiri selection.All the sushi pieces that are served come already dipped in soy sauce and a small amount of wasabi spread between the rice and its other components. Every bite burst with flavors while the fish melts like butter in your mouth. It was different than what I am used to and I loved it!

AMAZING OMAKASE!Small, adorable, modern sushi shop nestled in between the movie theater and Pacific Catch. It was a little hard to find because its in an alley, but go towards the entrance of Century Theater and you should see it. Its a small restaurant with a couple of seats at the bar and then about 8-10 tables. If you have a large party, I recommend calling ahead.I came here with only one intention, and that was to try the omakase. Ive heard and read good things about it. They have fish shipped fresh every day from Japan which is almost too good to be true. The omakase 10 piece is $40! which is not bad, I would even say cheap because most omakase is more expensive. You can choose to get 10 piece sashimi or nigiri and the half portion is half the price. My boyfriend and I both got the 10 piece nigiri omakase. All the sashimi/sushi is prepared by one chef, George! So it takes a bit of time but you can tell that he takes his time and really dedicates himself to every piece of fish he puts on your plate. I watched him carefully as he prepared our dish since I sat right in front of the bar. I was completely mesmerized by every detail he put into each piece of sushi. When our dish came out, it was beautiful! Each piece of sushi had a different topping to compliment the fish, and majority of the fish used was the special/fresh items of the day. So if you get the omakase, you dont need to order off the fresh items of the day menu, itll probably be on your plate already (: I especially loved the blue shrimp, which was one of the special of the day, the shrimp was firm but slightly sweet and George topped it off with a creamy sauce and some pine nuts which went really well with the shrimp. Each piece is meant to be eaten without anything else so you dont need to worry about extra sauces. Both my boyfriend and I were blown away with the dish from the quality of the fish to the unique taste. I can now see why George is so revered by his many customers!The service here was good, the servers were friendly. I highly recommend this place to any sushi lovers :) Definitely get the omakase, I dont think youll be disappointed!

If I can give a zero star I would. The worst service experience I have had in a decade. After 30min I was seated, no water was served and no waiter come by even say a word - even we have tried to grab their attention but they tried to ignore us. When I asked one for help, he said he was not my waiter and left without explaining.How is this restaurant managed? I felt like I was back dated 50 years that there were no equality. Unfairly and impolitely treated. No service at all.

Came in on a whim, after seeing a movie downtown. Was a little skeptical upon entering, as there was only one other table of customers - the place filled in as time went on. Also, the ceilings were a little low and the air stuffy. The place was very understaffed and was very very slow. The sushi, however, was the saving grace here - Outstanding quality!

Service is slow as hell. Servers kept chatting nonstop and didnt care about customers. I ordered 10 omakase sushi and my girlfriend ordered sashimi set. They served sashimi set in the first 10 mins. However, it took them more than 40 minutes for my sushi. My girlfriend finished her dish while I was waiting more than half an hour. I had to walk to the server to ask about my food because they never came. Suddenly, my sushi came within 5 minutes. They only have few tables left, so I dont think crowded was a good excuse.
