Really nicely designed boutique hotel with a great coffee bar, restaurant and outdoor patio bar attached (we tried all three!). We had the most amazing meal and service at the restaurant Rainbird. Top notch and rivals SF ... completely unexpected as a person coming to Merced w/some preconceived notions. I will say it was very noisy in the garage alley my window faced and I was woken twice by large trucks one dumping big items that sounded like heavy rocks and the other someone just listening to their radio super loud (both between 4-6am). The walls are thin and I recommend getting a room facing a different direction.
The streets of Merced sound like a Nascar race and you get to here every lap while staying here. Place is great just in the worst location ever. Its just too damn loud with the Camaros, Mustangs, Chargers, and loud trucks. Its just not a pleasant experience.
Charming old hotel in the middle of an attempted upgrade for the city of Merced. A lot of room for improvement but the heart & soul of the employees seemed intact on our recent overnight visit. The room was sparkling clean, the shower products were of good quality & the robes were a nice touch. However, bed was showing signs of a need to be replaced, service staff was not very informed about menu in the courtyard & the property could really use a pool (Merced gets HOT). Would stay again, if the time & place was right. We appreciated not being charged an amenity fee. I wish the place luck.
First thing the front of the hotel was blocked by construction crews spraying water (blocked valet). This made us walk around the entire property pulling our suit cases. After we made it under the water curtain into the lobby the desk clerk was rude and embarrassed my wife because her card was rejected due to us traveling. After that was resolved we took a short ride to my daughters home in Merced. On our return we found that their wasnt any available parking in the garage. All hotel spaces were taken. Went to the desk clerk to ask were we should park and he said use the valet, park in the street or in a nearby banks parking lot. Again unacceptable.Then... at 350a.m. the city garbage truck emptied three bins wakeing us from a dead sleep. If it wasnt for the need to stay for my daughters wedding I would have left. The desk clerk has no business being in the hospitality business. Oh, and I left a business card asking the manager give me a call to discuss the issues,,, never got a call or visit to our room. Located in the center at f downtown Merced, the hotel was within walking distance from Amtrak station and the Yartsβ transpo. The room was comfortably large, and the electric kettle was easy to use with good coffee bags of Steeped Coffee! We used the hotel at the night before and the night after Yosemite trip.
Noise levels from neighboring businesses with outside speakers make it impossible to sleep.Hotel response is that they are aware but that there is nothing they can do until after 2am.Doesnβt make for a restful stay.
Could not find the door at First because the signage isnt very accurate. The parking was super limited(only 1 spot left for me. Felt sorry for the next guy)and a long walk from the entrance though some random alley. The room was ok but the TV couldnt get Netflix or apps so there was only 1 good channel (maybe). More expensive than the other hotels in the area but had fewer amenities.
We really enjoyed our stay, and will definitely stay again when visiting our daughter at UC Merced. Staff was fantastic- the parking valet happily helped us with several things, even though he knew we were self-parking. Room was very comfortable, and the attention to detail really showed.Edited to add: Just arrived for another stay, staff is just as friendly as the first time. Hotel has changed ownership since my first visit, but Im guessing they kept a lot of the staff.

This one star review is for the wedding that was put on at the hotel. The wedding coordinator had an off day on the day of the wedding, and no instructions were given to anyone else on site. I felt like it really lacked direction because the hotel will no longer be part of the Hyatt family. It seems like everything that the wedding party that I was with one person would do one thing and another person would know another thing and the person you were talking to did not know anything. the service for the wedding was very confusing, the bar service in the wedding area was the absolute worst. So slow, drinks were made OK but not great. It was very very frustrating.
Beautiful property in the heart of Downtown. If youβre looking for place to stay while you go out to explore the national parks, this is a great option. Parking is easily accessible and inexpensive. Customer service was great from the start, housekeeping was on the job and kept the room clean with no issues. Lots of restaurants and shops like Target are nearby, and the bar inside the property has a whole life of its own. A big thank you to all the people who work here!
Avoid Native Son, bitter coffee and lukewarm oatmeal. After checkout from El Capitan Hotel, I discovered Tonis Courtyard Cafe, an exceptional breakfast and lunch venue. Its as close as the hotel is to the car park. The Meat Eaters omelet with hash browns and pumpkin bread was the perfect choice for my five-hour drive home. Be sure to take home some delicious cookies, muffins, or pastries from their fresh bakery.
Small hotel in Merced.Good location and easy to drive to. Has a self parking lot that was full when I needed it. Valet is 15/day.Service was good.Room was not too big, but was a bit disappointed as it was pretty easy to hear noise from other rooms or hallway.Amenities were good.Globalists get a breakfast down at the restaurant for 20 pp.Sadly this hotel leaves Hyatt JDB on 6/7/2023.
Beautiful remodel, unique features, outdoor sitting and eating was a very comfortable.The bar staff was amazing. Valerie made delicious drinks and her knowledgeMan on suggestions was impeccable. Definitely 5 star service.Cons-1. $100 deposit hold a night was outrageous. I hope when the new merge in ownership happens that will change. Iβve never heard of such a steep deposit.2. Room walls are thin. Can hear the ppl above walking. But front desk was very understanding and moved me. No problems after.3. Check out is at 11 a.m. i would recommend a 5-10 minute grace period. Staff was knocking on my door at 11:02 a.m. to confirm my departure. Made me feel unwelcome. I had to show them my bags packed smhOther than that it was an amazing experience. Decor and staff was delightful.

This is my second time in this hotel, the hotel has a dim light atmosphere towards the later night thats perfect for reading or have a relaxing night of drinking tea, coffee, or anything else preferred. The employees are accommodating and very hospitality, the view we had in our hotel room was possibly my most favorite place to be. Such a great location for anyone with a family or would like to have a quiet vacation time with a pet. My little dog was greeted with a lovely bag if doggy treats and a cute toy! π₯°

Great price and value in January.The know before you go: itβs quite loud with road noise/ traffic at night. There are ear plugs on the bedside table so clearly a known issue.The shower is also ridiculously designed and not great.
Solo traveler stayed here 1 night with my dog on a road trip. It was lovely from start to finish. Stayed on the top (4th) floor Junior suite was beautiful (no tub), bed was comfy, valet was easy, and restaurant was great. Very comfortable and clean hotel, with a lot of charm and modern vibes, and so dog friendly!
Beware! Hotel charged us $400 deposit in addition to the full cost of our stay to cover room damage, incidentals (for which the only explanation they could offer was water bottles). I have never in more than 60 years of hotel stays been responsible for a single dollar of room damage nor used more than $25 in incidentals. This is outrageous especially considering that this is Merced. Who they think they are? The downtown Ritz in New York City?Also if youre looking for the toilet, they placed it inside the shower stall!And finally parking is nonexistent. We didnt quite circle the full block before finding a garage entrance (where self park is limited to a handful of spaces) and then wandered the streets with our bags looking for the hotel entrance which is unmarked. However right outside the unmarked entry there is a valet stand where you may spend a goodly chunk of your $400 deposit. Note that finding this requires cir Ling the entire block if you approach the hotel from the freeway exit. I dont know if they dont care how hard it is for guests to find them and check in or if it just never occurred to them to look at these things from the guests perspective.
This is the second time I stayed at this hotel. It is a mid size hotel with a huge amount of charm. The rooms are clean, tastefully appointed, and modern. The TV allows you to stream from your phone so you are not limited to cable TV channels and pay per view movies. A big plus in my book. Plus, the exercise room is spacious with Peloton bikes, towels, streaming media, and filtered water.Any time I return to this area, I will be staying at the El Capitan.
Amazing, beautiful, well designed, so worth the price. It would be hard to find a better hotel anywhere in the country.I will be going again next time I have a Yosemite visit.
I didnβt care for any of the evening bar staff. Do you know when these post Covid times now? Customer service definitely Balters I wonβt go in to far but I will say I think I was in their establishment for almost 7 minutes before anyone said hello.
This was such a fun experience staying here - this was our second time. Super good location, good service, the design of the hotel & attention to detail was amazing. Its quaint and feels like a boutique hotel, but its not small - felt like a true retreat in the middle of Merced. The courtyard and lobby areas, the multi-use rooms, the gym, the food options... I just loved it. Highly recommend. I want to say thank you for the art gallery style walls throughout each floor. That in itself was a really great experience because they have art from some local artists.

Great hotel, perhaps the best in Merced. Clean and well kept. I spend too many days in hotels throughout the World and this is about one of the cleanest that I have been to. The staff is great. The decoration is modern and nice. Lots of restaurants nearby.
Could be one of the most unique hotel I stayed in the US. Vintage decoration with modern amenities made the stay interesting and comfortable. Sad to see it left the Hyatt family.

Hear me out: 5 stars because of fast elevators. Never had to wait more than five seconds, doors were - to my liking- closing very swiftly.
This is a solid hotel with just a few quirky issues that keep it from a 5 for me.1. Thereβs no internal market so you canβt grab snacks or drinks when the cafe isnβt open. The cafe doesnβt carry things like chips or juices to go, so itβs weird2. No microwaves in the rooms3. No irons and my steamer didnβt work. They did bring a communal iron though4. The shower doesnβt have a full closure. Itβs one panel of glass that doesnβt slide. This leads to the floor getting wet. Very weird.5. The restaurant is so expensive it isnβt even funny
Stayed Sat Feb 4th. Our original review was one star., as there was an issue with the parking.. The directions on self park were incomplete., there were no self park slots available, so we parked in a valet slot., only to be told that we would be charged or towed.. This after my husband walked back over from the lot.. We asked if we could be comped the valet fee due to the lack of self park spots and poor signage., and the answer was a flat NO. Our room was at the east end of the property on the top floor. There was a horrendously noisy band that went on until 1 AM. so we got little sleep. We did not called the front desk in the AM. They were apologetic but out of their hands as the band was at another venue. across the street. The hotel comped us breakfast whatever you want. which was very kind. The latte was great, since we did not pay anything for the items we ordered., I wont review them.
Room was nice but we had issues with parking. Free self parking was advertised but it was full. They ultimately let us park in valet but not without some trouble. No Globalist recognition or welcome amenities.
Staff helpful and friendly. Beautiful room. Liked the pour over coffee. Didnβt listen to any, but thought it was cool they have a record player and albums in the room; if Iβd stayed longer, Iβm sure I would have listened to some.
Nice room, clean and a nice suprise for downtown Merced
Beautiful hotel!! Super impressed with what Merced has done to their downtown area and this hotel was no exception. My daughter had a volleyball tournament in town, and while we only live a little over an hours drive away, myself and another mom took the opportunity to stay here for a night. We enjoyed late night drinks and small bites in their downstairs bar and sipped on coffee & tea in the morning. Definitely will be coming back to hopefully enjoy more of the downtown area including their wine bar next door, the beautiful restaurant downstairs, and to possibly see a show two doors down and the Manzier.

Staff were all very friendly and accommodating. They gave me and my emotional support dog bags of gifts that I really appreciated. The room(s) is very clean and stylish. Location is convenient and feels safe. As someone who has stayed with the Hyatt hotel over 70+ nights in the past two years, I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone!
The staff at this hotel make all the difference in making out stay amazing. The style and feel of the hotel was especially welcoming to families, but we still had a great time. The parking lot at this hotel is located about two blocks away and is extremely sketchy and empty at night (random people wandering around and talking), I suggest you take advantage of the free valet service instead. Check in staff were amazing and helpful. There was even someone helped us take our bags to our room. The feel inside the rooms is very luxurious, but also feels extremely historical and vibrant. Small details inside like the record player and hotel branded water bottles made it feel more special. Everything was clean, but the water pressure inside the shower wasnt as nice, understandably. Housekeeping staff were on it and were able to help us with all our needs. The Beekman products were especially interesting, although I wasnt the biggest fan of the smell. The hotel lobby is stunning and beautiful. Staying at this hotel was definitely an experience, and more catered towards adults, but we would still certainly look into to returning in the future!
Nicely decorated hotel, and the room has warm designs and fills of lovely touches. Welcoming and thoughtful staffs and delicious dining/ breakfast options. Centered in the area, there are many other places to explore with walking distance. Except for the proximity to the railroad, it is hard to find anything unpleasant. Quite a nice stopover before heading to Yosemite.
We were greeted by complimentary valet and quickly checked into our room at just after 11pm. The room was well equipped and there were bottles waters for $3 in tge room however we asked for and received waters at the front desk during check in at no charge. The rooms were well equipped and clean. If we are in the are again well return here to stay for the night.
Overall I loved this hotel! The record player and stuffed bee toy in the room was such a fantastic and exciting touch. I also loved the restaurant options in the hotel itself, great location in Merced too. The only reason I didnβt give five stars is because of the noise I could hear through the walls. I unfortunately was placed next to a room where the people had their barking dog, among other things, and it was extremely distributive in the evening. Hopefully adding more installation to the old building will help this in the future!
This tiny hotel surprised me; the service was phenomenal and the decor in the rooms and throughout the rest of the building was amazing. Ive been to many hotels in Las Vegas and although El Capitan is in a small town, it is right up there with the big boys in terms of cleanliness, room decorations, and overall satisfaction. Also, the complimentary coffee and tea are really good.
Walls, floors, windows are all incredibly thin. By far the loudest night Ive ever experienced with the footsteps above, homeless screaming outside, trains, police sirens, rain, wind. Didnt sleep a wink even on the third floor with all the noise.
Very boutique hotel. Well decorated rooms. Its definitely better than its surroundings. I was really disappointed that even on weekends, lots of things, including the hotel bar, closed at 11.

It is a must stay! From the moment you lay eyes on the outside of the building, to the lobby and then there is the room! Wow! I love the old building revival here. The modern style is just perfect for this place. The room is clean, the bed firm but comfortable. You can hear the occasional train and some city noise. Nothing bothersome to me. Just worth noting. I would definitely stay here again. Kinda sad to leave.
Totally recommended. Its a lovely and cozy hotel in Merced, CA. The food in the restaurant is amazing, and the staff is super friendly. Rooms are very clean, and the coffee in the rooms is the absolute best coffee Ive had in any hotels ever. I was just staying for one night after visiting Yosemite National Park, but decided to extend my stay just to relax.
Absolutely one of the best kept secrets in the Merced area. Beautiful immaculately clean hotel with awesome vintage decor. Staff could not be more nice and professional. Valet parking too, so you feel safe about your car. Iβve have stayed here twice in the last month and will definitely stay here again. A hidden gem worth checking out.
Very pleasant surprised in Merced. The historic hotel on Main St. has been completely renovated by Hyatt. The rooms are attractive, quiet and comfortable. It also has several dining options within the hotel. Theres a parking garage adjacent to the building, but the self-park spots are limited. Its easier to just let the valet do it. Whats nice about the area is there are a number of restaurants, bars and a multiplex theater all within easy walking distance. I parked my car for the overnight stay and walked everywhere that evening. The University of California campus in Merced is starting to make its presence known with more and better options for dining and entertainment in the downtown area. Ill definitely use the El Capitan again vs. staying at on of the usual motels.
Supposed to be the best choice hotel when staying in Merced. We got a bad room. There were two sounds randomly going on throughout the night, one from air conditioner and one from the fridge. SAT was next morning and didnt get more than two hours sleep because of the noises. The pressure of the shower was like a hardrain. It sucked! The front desk didnt have another comparable room that night to switch to. Also, the train goes all the time 24/7, so every couple hours you hear the horn many times. Dont go to Merced unless you have to. Not a good visit. They did credit me the stay, so that was okay, but the experience wasnt enjoyable.
I would give this hotel 5 stars if not for the noisy rooms. The staff is friendly, food and drinks are great, good parking and the rooms are very clean. However the rooms are unfortunately way too noisy. You can hear a cough or an alarm clock going off in the next room. Even conversations or a laugh can occasionally be heard. Also the windows let in quite a bit of noise from the street. A train honking at night, a party down the street or a loud motorcycle can all be heard as if you were standing next to it.
Nice stay recently. Hotel is modern with nice facilities and good location. Downside is noisy due to train nearby. Sad they are leaving hyatt in June.

A very unique hotel! There is a valet service for your car if you need it. The bed was one of the most comfortable beds Ive slept in. I travel alot for work, and really enjoyed this bed and the pillows. The unique set up will definitely leave you remembering this place for awhile! My room over looked the courtyard area, where there is places to eat from the restaurant attached to the hotel. There is also lots music. I do wish I wasnt on this side(need to sleep and be up early for work), but I have to say... they provided ear plugs and they are some of the most comfortable ear plugs Ive used! Overall, if youre looking at possibly staying here, you definitely should! Maybe just check what side your room is on of you are here on business.
The hotel is at downtown Merced Main Street. We stayed there for one night(room 323). It is very noisy there because of street traffic as well as music from the bar at very late night!
Train runs through town all night and ppl burning rubber all night. Hardly got any sleep for 4 days. They give out ear plugs to get peace! Nice hotel, but the noise is too much to get proper sleep. No, pool π€―and $100 a day incidental fee.
Stunning hotel with modern designs. This hotel is very clean with comfortable furnishings. It is well maintained in a nice area of Merced. The only negative is noise. It can be noisy, however, the hotel staff saw fit to provide soft earplugs on the bedside. I would book here in a heartbeat the next time Iβm in this area.
This was one of our most favorited and memorable hotels weβve ever stayed at. Thank you for being so dog friendly and allowing us to travel on the way to Yosemite with our dog, Murphy. From the beautiful interior design to its awesome food venues, we canβt wait to visit El Capitan again and to Merced.

Great Retro Hotel experience. The hotel was renovated about 15 years ago and is still in excellent condition. As typical for hotels of its era, the rooms are small. For more luxury, reserve one of the suites with a private balcony overlooking the courtyard. Definitely eat in the restaurant and enjoy their house made margaritas.
Charming yes. Luxury? Uh no. Its not luxurious. Sadly, there is no pool nor did our room have a bathtub. I called down the the front desk because it doesnβt seem like the ac in our room is working. The room temp reads 76Β° degrees and weβve got it cranked down to 65Β°. The lobby temp feels great. I want the lobby temp. And the movement of air in the room. I can hear twangly sounds coming from the lounge downstairs. I wish the windows were double-paned. Quiet is luxury.The parking structure for the hotel is a trek to the front door. Why not a backside entrance? Schlepping from the car to the hotel is not luxury. After we checked in we found out they offered valet parking but a backdoor entrance closer to the parking structure would be better.There was a cute-ish stuffed bee advertising the hotel on the bed. Donβt get too cozy with it though as the tag reads if you open it then it will be charged to your room. $26! Cβmon! Throw in the dang bee! Replace that outdoor courtyard with a nice pool!
Such a beautiful hotel with fun quirks like a Bluetooth record player, pour over coffee setup, beautiful interior design, and great food options. The Courtyard and Native Son had only some vegetarian options so I was skeptical, but they were all delicious and fresh tasting! Staff were so kind and accommodating. Highly recommend!
Combines cool vintage decor and architecture with all the modern amenities. Very clean and comfortable. Good restaurants and very friendly staff. Not a coookie cutter hotel. We really have enjoyed our stay.
This hotel is the greatest gem i have come across. Its not just a hotel, theres fine dining, casual dining, a Cafe, a theater, and more to come that they are adding on. All apart of the hotel!!! The door was opened for us everytime we walked up. They gave my dogs a good bag with toys, treats and a roll of bags. EVERY staff member was sincerely kind. The staff here are what make hospitality so enjoyable. You want to travel to meet this amazing team. And its the little things that count too. The shower pressure was great. The shampoo and conditioner actually cleans my extremely long and thick hair. I can go on and on. I will return here everytime I come to visit merced. Thank you so much for an OUTSTANDING trip.
When you turn a hotel that has history dating from 1912 to this building, take its legacy, modernize it in a way that is faithful, but also be modern and perhaps a little quirky with the decorations and rustic furniture? You get one of my favorite hotels i stayed at in a long time! Service was amazing at the front desk who helped me upgrade my room during check in after she almost forgot! She also handed out a cool goodie bag too filled with Robert Mondavi wine, snacks and water! She also handed me a razor which is fine i guess.. All the decorations around the hotel look amazing and dont feel out of place and recognizing its history! Maybe the most modern touch was the elevators! πInside the rooms just like i said before were pretty cool with colors like teal and gold and white mixing well with one another! Maybe the bathroom is a little left to be desired with its 1930s honeycomb black and white flooring and lack of a rolling glass door... At least theres a bath mat... The rest of the room has a modern TV comfortable beds and so many pillows that you make a pillow fort out of them!Amenities are plentiful as well, even if theres no pool.. (maybe build it in that courtyard area near the fitness center?). Speaking of the fitness center, it is very modern with 2 pelotons and technogym equipment everywhere including a rowing machine and a stretching machine! I know F1 and Nascar drivers use them to train so that is pretty cool! They also have water you can drink and even collect with these glass cups with screwable metal lids for the duration of your stay! Or you can buy the plastic water in your room for $3 each or have a high status with Hyatt. The cool part is when your refilling, you have the option of either regular cold water or carbonated water which felt really nice!Parking is complimentary and park in the valet spots...Even if its for one night, ill probably never forget this little hotel not just for its service but also its resturant its attached with and especially the decorations in the hallways, rooms and lobby! What a beautiful hotel!!
I booked a 300 sq ft room, but we were given the smallest possible room in this hotel that hardly even had 200 sg ft, but likely even less. When we asked for a proper room, the staff advised us that bigger rooms are available but asked to pay $50 extra for an upgrade that we disagreed with. We felt we were fooled by this hotel or/and the staff.
Truly a 5 star hotel in all ways.The property is in excellent condition, clearly well maintained, and extremely clean. Furniture and decorations in the common areas are artful and currently updated for the holiday season.Check in / customer service is significantly above average with staff just as friendly and helpful for my late night check in as they were for questions regarding breakfast the next morning. Speaking of breakfast, the hotel offers a credit for Hyatt Elites at Natvie Son, a restaurant attached to the lobby. The food and coffee were excellent, but a tad on the high end for price if youre paying out of pocket.I loved the thoughtfulness of each aspect of the rooms. A white and green color scheme (including a green ceiling) was tied in very well between the guest room and bathroom. Robert, towels, bed, pillows,, and linens are all great quality. Each room has a rather large smart TV with chromecast, but thats not where the modern touches end. Theres an alarm clock with wireless charging, energy efficient lighting throughout the entire property, modern thermostats, and a really cool water/ice station that offers to-go bottles of sparking or still water for no cost. (A personal favorite feature)Parking is free and plentiful in the garage just next to the hotel. Theres also a really nice courtyard space, meeting rooms, and sitting area on the first floor. While I didnt stop at the gym, it appeared to be clean with modern equipment.My choice to stay here resulted from a last minute change of plans, but I couldnt be happier to have found a hotel that I will definitely plan to revisit for a longer stay in the future.As I said, 5/5 across the board, if not better. I found this property (a category 2) to be a better offering than even the luxurious Park Hyatt NYC (a category 7).**Full disclosure. I booked a standard king room and was upgraded at no cost to a junior suite as a result of my globalist status. The approximate value of this upgrade was $100.

Awesome attentive and warm staff, especially Rachel and Jerry the restaurant manager created a wonderful atmosphere to enjoy a delicious and diverse 5 course meal prepared by a jewel of a chef Quentin Garcia!!! Memorable seasonal meal and cannot wait until our next chance to visit...
Nicely refurbished, but walls are thin and no direct access to the hotel from the covered city parking lot. While there is valet, valet is not always convenient. Too many nick knacks on the night stands, notably a record player.Biggest gripe for a newly renovated hotel, no EV charging options, and it appears at least 20-30 spots designated for hotel valet parking. Great experience! The hotel is a unique boutique style that blends modern lines with 20s swank wrapped in a timeless Yosemite lodge theme. The attention to quality and detail are excellent. The staff is very friendly and eager to help. Merced has deserved a place like this for quite sometime. We will visit again!
The experience with this hotel was not perfect, but the hotels Director of Customer Experience did attempt to do everything she could to make my experience right. She is a definite asset to the hotel and deserves a raise and/or bonus for her efforts.However, as a new hotel there are still several kinks that need to be worked out with this hotel.First, is the deposits for incidentals, a $100 per night fee on top of room charges is high, considering other hotels in this area only charge a flat rate of $50-75 for the entire duration of the stay.Second, the walls are paper thin as I could hear my neighbors entire telephone conversation when he was speaking on his phone. Sadly, I hate to admit it, but he was already using his indoor voice when speaking.Third, the resteraunt associated to the hotel needs more foot traffic from the street. I recommend the hotel utilizes more of its setup to bring in more locals for lunch specials and/or happy hour drinks. In addition, it may also be a great idea to consider offering room service as well.Lastly, there needs to be a protocol set in place that immediately addresses customers being over charged. What took several days to resolve my issue should have rather been resolved immediately when mentioned to the front desk.Though this is a modified & updated review of my original report, it should be noted that I feel this hotel could have potential to create a better overall experience for its customers and community.Aubray McPhersonCEOWEBJEDININJA
The El Capitan is very nicely done new hotel. They have 2 (soon to be 3) different restaurant/bar areas that both had very good food and very friendly employees. The rooms are have some nice touches and are well appointed. They have a market and a wine shop that will be opening soon. There is a lot going on at this hotel and they have put the time and detail into all of it. I think any city would be lucky to have this hotel in it, but this really makes stopping in Merced worth it!
Highly recommended! The front desk and valet staff were incredibly helpful. This is a beautiful hotel that is also dog friendly. We had an amazing stay and look forward to coming back when weβre in the area again.
The El Capitan is the highest quality establishments for lodging in the downtown area. This beautifully restored historic building is something out of a magazine. The courtyard is the focal feature of the hotel and my most frequented part of their offerings. You can sit outside under a wall to wall shade canopy while enjoying drinks and food. I recently rented a room for a company event and the food and service was fantastic.
We had two rooms, one for me and my husband and one for my two adult sons. We were visiting family in Merced. We had a room with a king bed and the boys had a room with two queen beds. If we stay there again, we will upgrade to a suite (it was only a few dollars more).Pros: The staff was very friendly and there was valet parking. The lobby area was comfortable to sit in. The rooms had a vintage feel (it was recently remodeled) and was pretty. There was a refrigerator in the room (microwave upon request). A coffee/tea station and a pot to warm water. Both the coffee and tea were in bags you placed in the cub and then poured water in the cup. Our room also had a retro record player with 4 records to choose from, and a vintage style phone. My husband enjoy the 24 hour fitness center. It is within walking distance to restaurants and shopping. The boys Queen room had a nice size bathroom with a vanity.Cons: Our king room was extremely small. No closet, but an area next to the coffee/tea station to hang clothes. No vanity in the bathroom, so no place to put toiletries. The shower had a rain shower head and no water pressure, not a full door on the shower, it was a half door so lots of water on the floor of the bathroom every time you took a shower. The bed was a king, but it was squeaky. The sheets were fine, so I think whatever mattress cover they were using was the culprit, but made for a noisy sleep - every time you rolled over or changed position - lots of noise. No desk in either room, there was a cut out in the dresser with a chair, but once you sat in it, no one could get around you. The walls were thin - we could hear the person in the next room talking on his phone and could understand what he was saying. He banged on our wall when I was talking to my son on the phone (I do not talk loud). They charge you a $500 deposit on your room in case of damage in addition to the room charge (so that was an extra $1,000 we were not expecting). So for 5 nights, we were charged $1,400 for the king and $1600 for the queen. The $500 per room is refunded when the cleaning staff lets them know there were no damages. I totally understand putting a $500 hold on the card, but not charging my card. My mom made the reservation and thought she paid for the room in advance (her Christmas gift for us). So I was surprised when they charged us. She went to the hotel the day after we checked in and had the charge transferred to her card, but was told it would be 4 to 5 days for the charge to be taken off our cards.Overall, we enjoyed the hotel, the staff was amazing, but do think the rooms and bathrooms should be larger for the money.
The rooms were immaculate with the decor and overall vibe being 9/10. There isnβt a ton of stuff to do in downtown Merced but I definitely thought the immediate area around the hotel was safe, walkable and had enough to entertain me for a few hours. The staff were authentic and friendly also really really great helping me with all the little things a traveler might ask. Definitely your best choice in Merced.
Not my best Hyatt experience. The room was great and there are some great guest features. I am World of Hyatt Explorist so I see lots of their different categories of hotels. This one should be in a lower category. Price and location didnt match up.*Edit- True to form I am increasing review to 5 stars as this Hyatt affiliate is looking for feedback and is responsive to it as this category should provide members and customers the best experience and value they can. The amenities were limited, did not align to my expectations, and do feel compared to others of this category the pricing wasnt on point for location and other comparable competition on my stay dates. But I will not cross off my list as they have taken initiative to solicit feedback. Thank you
Really nice new hotel. Was not expecting anything special due to it looking like a boutique hotel but it was fantastic. I felt like I was at a 5 star hotel with the level of service I was getting. Everything was nice, clean, and modern. Free valet service was a nice touch
We had a great stay here while visiting Yosemite. Very good Globalist recognition with WOH program. The hotel has a boutique property vibe, very clean and the food at the Restaurant is also top notch.Christel and her team are doing a great job with customer service and hospitality, and we will definitely be back here while visiting Yosemite again.

Sadly I stayed few days . What was disappointing was the 3 night stay was with them not cleaning the room. They kept coming to the door saying check out was at 11. Mind you, this is already 11:30 ish. I went downstairs for breakfast hoping they would have room cleaned . When I got back, my key would not work ! The nice lady cleaning the OTHER rooms let me in ! Shortly after that, a knock on the door to advice me that check out was at 11. I mentioned yet again, Im here till the 12th !!! He apologized and said I will fix it ! Meanwhile, they again skipped the cleaning of the room !Disappointed to say the least !
An impromptu and short getaway from San Francisco to the cutest little place/ town Iβd never heard of. I had hoped to visit Yosemite but was unable to book a required reservation but I was able to book a night at the beyond cute and chic El Capitan and enjoyed the most perfectly peaceful weekend in the most adorable suite and in one of the most comfortable beds Iβve slept in quite awhile. From the fabulous pour over in room coffee to the perfectly appointed decor throughout, the delicious cocktails and food and the wonderfully welcoming beyond accommodating staff - i canβt say enough wonderful things and canβt wait to return. Well done, Hyatt!

Room was very good, the staff was even better. Could not be happier with the stay we had, even with traveling with an infant, we were surprised by the quality of the room, and even more impressed with the staff.

Just had one of the most extraordinary dinners in my entire life! Rainbird - the hotels dinner house - is lead by a young talented chef who has brought Merced onto the global foodscape.. Its sophisticated and expensive yes, but so well worth every single course, every amazing bite. An experience youd expect to find in places like Paris, Shanghai, London, or Toronto....Ive been to all of those places and never eaten better. A true thrill!
We had a fantastic experience at this beautifully updated hotel! El Capitan and the adjoining restaurant/theater Mainzer seem to be leading the way in efforts to revitalize downtown Merced.Excellent Globalist recognition at check in, including thoughtful welcome gift and automatic suite upgrade. The suite was wonderfully appointed, with a massive claw foot bath/separate walk in shower, extremely comfortable bed and lots of thoughtful furnished touches. JdV has done an excellent job of showcasing local artists throughout the hotel, including a lovely series that adorns the (much more enjoyable) 4 floor staircase alternative to the elevator.While their fine dining Rainbird restaurant does not open until summer, the food and drinks at the Courtyard and Native Son were uniformly excellent - wonderful baked goods at Native Son, and great snacks plus an inventive - if somewhat limited - drinks list at the Courtyard. Native Sons breakfast menu was very gluten heavy, but they were great in rustling up a gf breakfast sandwich for my gluten intolerant partner.There were a couple of teething issues likely related to the hotel being newly opened (in room Chromcast and fridge not working), but management addressed both in a prompt fashion and provided great communication throughout our stay.All in all a really wonderful stay, and looking forward to returning when Rainbird is open and Mainzer is able to start showing movies. Highly recommended if you are exploring the Central Valley or as a base for trips to Yosemite.
For a top notch hotel, valet service was different from most venues:Valet working at night may have been socializing with an unnamed vehicle (unknown if hotel guest or not) parked in valet designated parking without a mask (FD stated valet didnβt need a mask if outside); we parked right behind the vehicle and valet started to walk away and go to his post. We waited for him to approach us; we ended up walking to him for parking info, we opted not to utilize valet service.FD was great and accommodating for housekeepingβs error in room prep. We didnβt time it but it took about estimated 30 minutes to resolve. We later found valet entering the building unmasked.
The walls are thin. I can literally hear everything happening next door. Valet parking is free but will start charging a fee in early 2023.
Its a fantastic hotel with an amazing and attentive staff. All of them were so helpful and friendly. Courtyard bar closed early but great cocktails. Lauren and Olivia were especially helpful in the courtyard. Really lovely experience and fantastic place. Will visit again soon.

Yes! El Capitan is beautiful, and such a welcome upgrade to downtown Merced! The staff are super friendly and welcoming. We had dinner at Native Son and it was delicious. Lunch out on in the courtyard was great too - such a lovely atmosphere for lounging and enjoying yummy bites (crab cakes!!) with friends. We will be back again for sure! And again...and again...π
Notably friendly staff welcomed our weekend stay to this, Mercedβs newest and most tastefully appointed boutique hotel. The large suits boast an eclectic cosmo-country aura of tantalizing and contrasting visuals that require us to peek out the window to remind ourselves we still remain docked in Merced. The spacious bathroom offers a claw foot tub and massive shower gloved in frosted glass; overall, this room is worthy of stealing and taking home. The king bed was firm and comfortable, clothed in top shelf linen accompanying incredibly luxurious pillows. The big screen in the bedroom, only slightly smaller than the living room LG monitor provided ample viewing pleasure. From classic rugs to the tasteful art and artifacts anointing wainscoated walls and artisan trimmed woodwork, this hotel is special. The large patio dining experience was perfect for our warm Merced evening, the fixed sound system filled the courtyard smoothly with a balance of sound that was set at just the right decibel for relaxation and conversation over a unique selection of hors dβoeuvres and cocktails. The lobby and various conversation stations of the hotel are also tastefully appointed with a mix of Native American to contemporary eclecticism and memorabilia; all reminding you that you have arrived β and so has Merced.Bravo π
I had an appetizer and drink. It was pretty pricey, $40.00 total including the tip...!! A little to rich for Merced. I ate in the patio area, which was very nice. Service was pretty good. The hotel area was dark, and nothing else was open except a Cafe that served coffee and drinks.

The good...A great stopping place if you love Northern a California and your family lives in Southern California. It is a new hotel in a historic building in downtown Merced. The rooms are great and so is the rest of the hotel.

I was about to book this hotel as Google listed it as pet friendly. I called the front desk and was told that they do NOT accept pets. This would have left me in a bad position when I arrived to check in.
Newly renovated hotel (reopened 3/31/21) with a top notch outdoor restaurant. Cafe was excellent as well. Hotel is new to Hyatt system; had been a Joie de Vivre property. Renovation is tasteful and staff worked hard to make our stay enjoyable.

Weβre here Christmas Eve and Christmas Day visiting family. This hotel had Great service, completely remolded with really nice amenities. Valet parking and a nice outdoor restaurant.
Very lovely hotel. Enjoyed my stay the only issue is, the walls are not sound proof so I was able to hear my neighbors conversation clearly at 1am. More of a design flaw.

Everything was great the rooms are very impressive The Only Fault or bad thing with the air conditioner in the room was pathetic I called the front desk and they did offer to have maintenance come take a look at it but I didnt really want to waste time doing that I had things to do in the room.. hopefully they get that fixed because the place is beautiful especially considering youre in the middle of Merced

Enjoyed drinks and appetizers in the courtyard. Crabcakes were delicious, fries were not. If you like grapefruit try the Ruby cocktail, it was refreshing and quite good.

The staff at this hotel are amazing and so friendly. They are very accommodating. And it is a pet friendly hotel! Theyre a little nooks and crannies all over the place, so go explore the first level and see the different spaces that are available.

I like to buy food for two servings and heat it up the next day.Otherwise, the staff was very friendly, helpful, and kind. They will go out of their way to do their best for you.

The cafe attached to the lobby has a small menu but the food and drinks are very well prepared. The noise from passing trains is the only complaint. Would definitely stay here again.

The decor is lovely, kind of a retro meets modern/Americana vibe. It has an amazing courtyard with fantastic cocktails in the evening. Lots of work space available in the lobbies as well. The attached cafe/restaurant, Native Son, was very good. The gym seems brand new and has two Peloton bikes (see video), which I gladly used π. Rooms are lovely, mine had a turntable and a rotary phone which I loved. Just be aware if you have a room next to the alley there may be trucks loading and unloading in the wee hours of the morning. They provided earplugs in the room, which were very useful.Staff are very helpful. Not to be TMI, but I needed tampons in the middle of our trip and didnt know where I could get some quickly, so I called the front desk and they brought up a few for me. I appreciated that so much!

2023-10-06 06:50:06Came for a wedding that was at the hotel so thatβs the only reason we stayed here. If we ever have to come back to Merced (which I donβt see that happening) we definitely wouldnβt stay here again. The logistics of the building and access are a huge pain (parking, getting your stuff from your car to your room, the layout of the hallsβ¦). The rooms are also very small, and everything about this hotel is for aesthetics, not functionality. The walls and floors are also not very thick. Our first night here we were kept up by very loud people above us. Even with using the ear plugs the hotel provided it didnβt completely drown them out. The rooms have a funky, old smell that is not pleasant, and the air system doesnβt have the option to just run a fan so it gets very stuffy in the room unless you want to crack your window and let more outside noise in.

2023-08-20 00:52:26This was my second time staying at El Capitan. I was there for 3 days and 2 nights. The lounge spaces and the room decor is gorgeous! I love it! I also like how clean everything is.I did have two issues, the pillows were comfy, but my bed wasnβt. Second, I donβt know if I was next to a staff lounge area, but both nights a group of people would go in the room next to mine around 11:45pm. Either they were loud or the walls are thin, but I could hear them and that made it hard for me to relax and fall asleep.Other than that, I really like the hotel and Iβm looking forward to going back.

2023-09-04 18:07:12Small city however such a contrast in service. The staff are incredibly humble, helpful and genuinely caring. It has been a spectacular stay here. The fitness center is 24hr. Peloton bikes high quality equipment. We learned the hard way however the locals advised us that west of the 99 freeway itβs a bit sketchy. South central LA style/Skid row.Toniβs Courtyard is half a block away very good, walking distance. I hope anyone staying here enjoys the same experience we had.

2023-09-04 14:10:48This place is super clean! I loved all the details. They did an amazing job of keeping the character but also updating it. The only downside is the road noise but thats what happens when youre right in town.
