At this Mexican spot, the foods just okay,The tortas decent, but wont blow you away,The tacos, alas, are a different story,Their tortillas are big, which dampens the glory.The flavors arent bad, but nothing stands out,And the service is average, without any clout,But if youre in the area and need a quick bite,This place might suffice, though its not quite right.The atmospheres pleasant, with a cozy vibe,But the tacos are a miss, which I cant abide,And though the tortas tasty, its not worth a trip,Overall, this place doesnt quite hit the hip.So if youre in the mood for Mexican fare,There are better options out there, if you dare,But if you find yourself in this spot by chance,Order the torta, and give the tacos a pass.

Not sure why it took me this long to visit El Maguey. But the moment I walked in I was greeted by the friendly staff. The place is very inexpensive and the food is amazing. This is authentic Mexican food. I ordered some tacos and they were delicious, my wife ordered the shrimp fajitas and they were amazing. She couldnt finish the whole plate. Also they have different variety of salsas and every single tasted amazing. This is a great place to get Mexican food around San carlos, and belmont. The only downside is the limited space to dine in. And the parking lot situation. But if you want great tacos, this is the place to go!

Super burrito was great, filling, and only like 10 bucks. The contents got a little soggy and not as flavorful as I hoped but still satisfying af. Nothing a bunch of salsa cant fix though! Its really nice that chips and salsa are free. Overall, quick, cheap, filling, and tasty. Its nice to grab it to go and then have a 1 minute walk over to the park next over to eat it outside.Food: 6/10Vibes: 5/10Service: 7/10Value: 8/10

Fantastic authentic Mexican food. The chicken tacos are a solid and reliable choice. The salsa bar with unlimited tortilla chips is a great addition with an ample selection of salsas (including mango, my personal favorite).

Have eaten takeout from here many times and the food is excellent taqueria-style food. Ordered from their covid friendly line inside and had delicious breakfast burritos vegetarian, horchata and Peruvian cookies. All delicious to go with an abundant selection of salsas. No line mid morning.

The caldo de pollo (Mondays only) and caldo de res (Tuesday and Friday only) here is amazing. Agua fresca flavors are delicious too. If you go there for lunch dine in, its best to go early or later (not exactly at 12) or get takeout.

This is the quintessential no-frills neighborhood joint, and its amazing. I had the California burrito and it was delicious! It was also huge, which was a very pleasant surprise on top of the awesome prices. My wife loved her enchilada & tostada, as well as the free chips and varied salsas. Every single one of the staff was super friendly and helpful. I cannot recommend this place enough!

I always get their super burritos. I like their free chips and salsas. The pineapple salsa is especially good, sweet but a bit spicy. Green salsa is medium spicy with a hint of mint. Friendly staff. Prices are very reasonable. Parking is very limited. I park at Laureola Park around the corner.

The burritos here are excellent, as are the flautas. Beans, chips, and salsa are also great. This restaurant is so good that I make special trips to San Carlos just to eat here! In fact, the first time I ate here I was already thinking about when I would come again while I was still eating. All in all, a great place to come to and eat a great meal.

Just another strip mall greasy spoon. I ordered the Shrimp and Steak; the refried beans were watery, there were two small slices of avocado, steak was a small thin piece of well done meat. Got a single cup of water to wash it down while ordering. Terrible. No where near what you would expect from their undeservedly high rating.

Yes, the harder beans and rice are slapped onto a tortilla, the better it tastes. Extra credit for clanking and tossing metal skillets. Soccer on the big screen. Locals laughing with workers. Dont wreck their world. Enjoy every morsel and minute.

My local Mexican place - when we are too busy to cook, we grab ourselves some takeout from El Maguey - always a family favorite for us. They have a really tasty fresh salsa bar with some unique homemade salsas, and the food always hits the spot (my go to is the Chile Relleno burrito, my kids go for quesadillas). Horchata if were feeling indulgent. Its right next to the Caltrain station, so I can walk there on my way home from work, which is super convenient. Staff is nice, service is quick, food is good, and theres a TV that always has soccer on it - what more can you ask for, lol.

I like this spot! They prepare first-rate dishes, they have a nice menu, The cook in that restaurant is very trained, I like very much tasting all their dishes. The dishes are consistently fresh and tasty, the service towards the clients is nice. I go often to this restaurant and I was never unhappy. I recommend it to all.

I had the chicken & rice dish #15 on the menu. The portion size was large however the taste was just OK. The small place was clean and pretty empty when we showed up on a weekday at about 5:15 pm. A steady flow of people started arriving at 5:30 although most were picking up orders to go. Probably will come again sometime to try the burritos or tacos in hope they would be more to my taste.

Had the shrimp burrito, agua de Melon and a Churro. Service was fast and efficient from paying to my plate less than 5 minutes, my respects to the chef as well as who ever made the salsas very fresh and delicious. Flavour was excellent on the food and a total treat to have the fresh churros made to order, I fully recomend this place to anyone hungry for authentic mexican food.

Absolutely legit spot that i always stop at en route to the airport for an in-flight california burrito. They care about making sure your order is right and their menu is comprehensive and consistent. Gorgeous, not so greasy chips, they used to have the best + my favorite salsa bar pre-Covid, and theyve got a brilliant, juicy and unctuous cali burrito (I always get the steak and shrimp). I live in Europe and dream of El Maguey on the reg.

Very standard taqueria, with the highlights being their salsa bar. The sauces they have there are fantastic, particularly the mango one. I was a bit underwhelmed with the tacos, however. I had the asada, cabeza, and pastor. The pastor was surprisingly a treat, while the asada and cabeza were a bit dull. The tortillas themselves were just okay.

Amazing california burrito that welcomes any San Diego transplant. Fast service. Free warm chips and fresh salsa bar with an amazing but spicy pineapple flavored salsa alongside traditional flavors (Pico de gallo etc.). Convenient location close to the 101 freeway and easy parking make it accessible for those travelling from outside the San Carlos area. Definitely recommend as a go-to cheap Mexican food place :-)
