I came here to have brunch with one of my friends. Loved everything about this place, if you’re new here and don’t know what to order they have sample plates to give an idea on what you get with your order, I ordered egg avocado toast, and cafe latte. Everything tasted so yummy! Will be going back soon!

I hate leaving negative reviews for small businesses and I usually never do but we had brunch here over the weekend and the food was honestly very mediocre. :(The sexy French toast was so overpriced for what it was (2 pieces of bread and some fruit) and was probably the worst French toast I’ve ever had. 😭 The bread for French toast was really dense. The fruit on the French toast was good but it was also a looot less than the version they had on display at the counter where you order.Just felt tricked because the actual food here looked nothing like the plates they had on display at the counter.We also got the omelette which was better than the French toast but it was also a very average omelette.In summary, I would come here if you want a place with plenty of seating, nice vibes, and friendly service with outdoor seating! Food is just ok and overpriced IMO but there isn’t really a better American brunch option in downtown San Mateo which explains why it’s so popular.

The place is a must visit in San Mateo, their Coffee were on point with a fusion of Southeast Asian and Western touch. The sandwiches were different from most places, salmon Benedict was def the best one I had in a while. They were also selling coffee beans from Philippines. A super unique experience with great high quality service. Recommended for everyone!

Great place to meet friends for a quick brunch. They run very busy though, ordering is self-serve and the queue can get really long.Food is extremely healthy. They have a good selection of soups, crepes, sandwiches, lattes. I had the chicken gumbo soup, it was heart warming.

Have come here for both weekend brunch and a lunch during the week. I love that they show all the menu items, so you can see what the food will look like. The food is great, and I was able to find a table easily both times. Would recommend :)

First time in beautiful San Mateo and decided on Foreigner which stated it was women owned and operated. The food choices range from the Healthy Start to decadent waffles. The coffee was delicious (the foamy one is almond milk). The atmosphere is modern and eclectic. It’s not fast food, so go when you have time to enjoy or get a coffee and pastry to go.

The food was very fresh and delicious. I am vegan and I ordered the smashed avocado toast. There are not many vegan options available. With that said, I was very happy with my smashed avocado toast. The bread was fresh and the smashed avocado was delicious. I ordered an American to drink which was very good.The restaurant is very nice. When you first walk up they have a display of the food so you can see what it looks like before you order. You then order your food and they bring it to your table. The staff is friendly and helpful. They have a creative menu and wonderful coffee. I would recommend trying Foreigner.

This review is long overdue. Weve been coming here since the beginning of the year, and its always a great experience. The food is excellent, and the service is top-notch. They have a wide variety of tarts and breakfast/lunch choices. We tend to come here either early (before 1130am) or after lunch because the line is usually out the door. The best part about this spot is the parking is right behind the building with an entrance right next to the cafe. Do yourself a favor and try it out!

A great restaurant for the late breakfast or brunch. Here you can find a wide selection of toasts, specials, bakery and desserts.We tried Morning Breakfast Croissant and Smoked Salmon Toast. Both dishes were delicious. Good portions, toast and croissant were crispy, and all ingredients in dishes went well together. For dessert, we ordered a Triple Chocolate Mousse, and we were also satisfied with it taste. The dessert was delicate and balanced in sugar.

This is a brunch place that located in San Mateo. There are a lot of menu options for brunch including salad and sandwiches. This place has a large space and the interior is cute. I ordered iced americano and Arcadian grilled chicken salad. Iced americano wasn’t really my type since it has a strong sour taste. Salad was pretty fresh but the chicken in the salad was a bit dry. I might try sandwiches if I come here again.

Stopped in for lunch with a friend. We ordered smoked salmon toast, morning breakfast croissant, ube puff, black mango ice tea, and passion fruit iced tea. We found ourselves a table and put the order tag on the table. The iced teas were disappointing, neither tasted like anything, more like colored water. I think Ill skip the ice teas next time. However the food was great. I thoroughly enjoyed my crossiant sandwich, first time Ive had a crossiant toasted, cause they melted the cheese. My friend really enjoyed the smoked salmon toast. We both agreed the food was great and would be back for the food. The ube puff, think large cream puff, that was delicious. I thought about ordering a second one.Updates review:Stopped in for breakfast again.. Busier than last time due to rain an no body sitting outside. But ordered Denver omelet, salmon Benedict, smoke salmon toast, morning sandwich, turkey and swiss sandwich, and 2 ube cream puff. Food is great as last time. My parents and sister whose first time also really enjoyed the food.

Made a reservation for 7 and was promptly seated. The dinner menu is fairly simple, with only four entrees and two pastas to choose from. The server was kind to pour us a small sample of two glasses of wine so that we could pick which bottle we preferred. The lemon shrimp pasta was very tasty with the pasta cooked just right. However the large shrimp were slightly over cooked. The halibut dish was just ok, the fish was over cooked and I’m not sure why they cut up the vegetables into tiny pieces instead of them being whole.It was a nice quiet atmosphere with above average food and great service.

Open for dinner! Highly recommend the artichokes and crispy rice balls for appetizers. The tender artichoke comes prepared standing upright perfectly smothered in a lemon-caper butter sauce. For the mains, steak with crispy potatoes and a delicious seared sea bass, moist with a crispy skin. Chocolate molten lava cake to finish off a wonderful dining experience. The waitstaff gets 5 stars as well for their attentiveness and professionalism.

Amazing thing is that they have a display of all dishes. And you can choose from many. The place is really crowded and popular (we went on Sunday). The only thing - due to its crowdedness, they may mix orders or forget about bringing coffee :)

Excellent food! I’ve only been here for breakfast but have enjoyed everything. The avocado toast is delicious. My last visit I ordered a Denver omelette with fruit. I ate every bite. Fresh ingredients and great service. The food takes a while but it’s well worth the wait. No pictures because I’ve been so hungry I just started eating!

Foreigner was on my list of brunch places to visit for quite some time now. We came on a weekend afternoon with plenty of seats outdoors. The place has cute interior featuring a wall of artsy clocks, I am guessing representing time zones from around the world, even the order number card is a laminated postcard with clocks. Really love these small details that give the place more character. We came in with really high expectation because of the photos others have posted, but feel like Foreigner missed the bar by a bit, overall still a good brunch place.Smoked Salmon Toast with Avocado - 4/5 - The toast came with a giant piece of smoked salmon covering the bread with some avocado pieces as topping. As soon as you dig in, you will notice that underneath the salmon, there are also sliced cucumbers, cherry tomato, and boil egg! Love the layering of each ingredient that gives this toast a very light finish and healthy vibes. Hoping for a little more avocado on top, maybe they just picked a smol avocado.Foreigner Favorite - 4/5 - This is a mix of sausage, potato, onion and two poached egg. It is on the heavier side with strong flavoring, so it was a good compliment to the toast. Egg yolks were runny, maybe a just a tiny little bit undercooked since some egg white were still runny as well.I also heard that they are offering upscale dinner menus as well in addition to the casual brunch setting, would be interested to try out dinner sometime.

Went to tea time for a Bridal Shower and it was perfect in every way! Not only was the tea served in beautiful glassware/ china, but it tasted delicious and everything in the food towers was so good! The staff was also very friendly and accommodating of our large group. Highly recommend!

Went here for brunch with friends on a Saturday. We ordered our food and sat at a table. The ambience and the decorations was really enjoyable.The spinach and mushroom quiche was terrific. Im usually a little careful with quiche because of the strong egg smell, but it was cooked to perfection here. I enjoyed every bite of itThe french toast and tomato mozzarella avocado toast were fresh and tasted great as well.The latte flight with 4 flavors - turmeric, Ube, matcha and beets was really interesting as well. With the turmeric, make sure to stir before you take a sip. The flavors were mild, but yummy.For dessert, we had a strawberry crumble, Baked berries and triple chocolate mousse. The pastry for the crumbles were crunch on the outside and soft on the inside. Crumbled so well and tasted amazing. The mousse, very soft in texture and the chocolate wasnt overpowering either.Overall, had an amazing brunch after a long time and definitely recommend this place.

TL;DR - service is terrible, told me they hadnt charged me for an Ube Puff I had prdered and asked me to pay if I wanted an Ube Puff. I asked them to print my receipt and it showed I had indeed paid for the item. Would only recommend take out from out experience if you really wanted to try this place out.Had a really bad experience our first time here. Ordered food and sat down with our number. They forgot the orange juice my gf ordered and I and to get up to ask them. Then they never brought out our pastries, so I had to get up to ask them about that as well.The server comes out with 2 wrong items and 1 right one, so we tell him the two other items. He comes out with just one item and I said we were still missing the Ube puff, but Im not sure he understood. I go to the cashier and he says he never charged me for the puff, but I could put in an order and pay for it. At that point,I asked him to print my receipt. They come out with the receipt and also an Ube Puff because my receipt showed that I indeed had paid for it already.The pastries were not bad but were served cold, the brunch items were just ok, but the overall experience was so bad, alongside the fact that their dishes are pretty overpriced and left such a bad taste in our mouths that I wouldnt come here again.

We went for Saturday brunch around 10:45, not much line. We had macchiato and cappuccino in coffee section.Smoked salmon and avocado on a croissant, foreigners special. Smoked salmon was with boiled egg, cucumbers, tomatoes and some dressing. It was delicious. My husband loved his eggs and potatoes as well.Coffee was really good. We are fairly particular about our coffee and this place doesn’t disappoint.Best part is they display their dishes so easy to pick. They seem to have quiche and some pastries as well. I love how they have all the dishes on display, but is not helpful when it comes to ordering, as everything looks so delicious!!! I also loved their coffee. Ive been here several times. Overall, its fine. Most of the food is good, but some of the dishes are annoying to eat, like the benedicts - they use thick sliced sourdough bread that you cant cut through.Presentation of the dishes and specialty coffee is good, but dont compare it to their display case. Youll get less food and it wont be as pretty, but thats typical.Price is on the high end for what you get (expect to pay nearly $30 after tip for a coffee and a plate thats half arugula half potato and bell pepper).Service is okay, your interactions with the staff are limited to ordering at the counter and saying thanks, you have to get your water yourself (if there is any), have to bus your own platesInside is nice, music choices can be a bit off kilter, but nothing to ruin it.

Reaaally popular brunch place. I ordered for pickup which was honestly the best move on a weekend during brunch. Even just picking up, there was such a long line out the door that I had difficulty getting in and had to ask a server who was helping tables outside in order to get my food from the counter where they take orders. But aside from how busy it was I highly recommend! The food we got was so nicely prepared even though it was takeout (I find pickup at other places is often roughly thrown together) and was SO tasty! Im excited to go back to try more things on their menu. We tried the banana bread french toast and the smoked salmon egg benedict.

1st time here.Avocado toast was OK, Im used to fresh avocado, this place uses more of a guacamole. Incredible food for breakfast, the avocado on toast with eggs is amazing. Coffee is good also but avoid the fresh Orange juice. At $6 it is punchy and not nice. The juice is orange in color but it doesn’t taste of freshly squeezed orange juice and there are zero orange bits in it. Other that that, everything else as really good and happy go lucky staff working there which is always a bonus.

Grabbed brunch here with a girlfriend on Saturday. Arrived at around 11AM and grabbed the last inside table.We got the French toast and bacon benedict, with a dirty chai latte and a spirulina latte. The French toast was great and not too sweat. The dirty chai latte was on the sweet side for me, next time Ill just get a regular coffee. The spirulina latte was interesting-- it basically tasted like drinking a plant.Overall really like the food and ambience, and the staff is really nice. Ill be back!

Went one weekday afternoon for brunch.Got the salmon benedict and some drinks with a acquaintance.Was a bit disappointed with the food. I personally like my potatoes to be crispy and they were soggy. The poached egg on my benedict was also cooked all the way.I also had difficulty cutting into my toast; the bread was tough and it was a real struggle to cut my food with the knife that was provided. The toast and salmon was very salty— felt like my tastebuds were being bombarded with the flavor of salt.I really liked the salad that came with my meal. It was lightly dressed with a sweet vinaigrette.The mixed berry lavender smoothie was probably the best. Was beautifully presented and was delicious.

Given the limited options in san mateo, this place is ok. They def skimp out on giving you a filling salad. Our frizee greek salad was basically empty and it was pretty sad and the side of chicken we ordered with it was dry. The chicken sandwhich was good but the side salad it came with was just unseasoned mixed greens. I wish they put more effort.

Sadly, it was not the best selection to take my 82 yr old mom with her best friend for a Mother’s Day early brunch. This place is super busy, short staffed and can’t accommodate individualized service at tables aside from bringing you your food. When busy it is incredibly noisy which makes it difficult to converse with your family. I let the staff know prior to ordering that I had two elderly moms with me. I wanted to find a table prior to me ordering at the counter for them. I asked for a paper menu so I could read and translate. They didn’t have them nor could I seat them. I ordered 4 meals all of which came out at different times. We had hoped to eat together. The staff kept saying it’s coming, it’s coming but one of the meals never came so I had to go and request at the counter . The coffee came out cold with no one to come back around and check in on you at the table. The water glasses weren’t dry but had a wet cloudy haze . I could pick up my veggie scramble with my fork. Cheese was heavy, cold and made a web over my eggs. Strawberries weren’t fresh.The bread or toast was hard and difficult for my mom to eat. My mom was grateful I made an effort to try a new spot but asked me for a do over as I drove out 4 hrs to see her and she was hoping for a cozier intimate - harmonious family centered vibe where truly everyone feels welcome. The service experience felt pressured and disjointed . This place i imagine is best for a younger audience and the business community. Many tables with individuals on their phones or laptops. Too noisy for us. I will definitely spend more time researching new spots and go back to our usual restaurant style brunch venues .

EDIT:Went back a week later and had quite an amazing experience! They made sure to get us soft boiled eggs which really did make the difference and add that creamy note to the mix. Im so freaking addicted!The mango iced tea float was very delicious and uses dairy free sorbet._______________________________________________________________________I was excited to see a new breakfast spot pop up near me and had to try it!The biggest issue I have is that the kitchen closes at 12pm on weekends. I really wish they would extend the breakfast hours! I wake up late so I am sad to think that I might never get a chance to try their breakfast burrito. We came here for brunch with a group of friends - I definitely do not recommend this. Getting seating for a group of 7 people together is an extreme challenge - for smaller groups of maybe 1-2 persons - it wouldnt be problematic. The line was way too long (not sure why - their service is very quick but it just seems extremely long to order). We managed to get seated and everyone at our table got their food except myself. In total, it took them 47 minutes to get my food - long after my friends had completed finishing their food and were patiently waiting for mine to arrive. When the food did arrive - I wasnt impressed. The salad was drowning in the dressing and the salmon toast was on a bread that was either stale or the crust was just inedible - extremely tough. I noticed that most people at other tables also discarded the crust. All in all - not the best experience. Perhaps it is a fluke and a single incident and I wish others a better experience. But the pictures and the prepared plates at the front of the counter look far better than what you actually get. Especially when they’re slightly busy. My review of Foreigner is sooooo overdue. I work from home so Im constantly bouncing around all sorts of coffee shops. However, as of late I only go to Foreigner! Really, Im there like twice a week sometimes. Ive had to force myself to go other places because I feel bad for my old go-to spots. The seating options (indoor/outdoor, and the outdoor table is great for standing), the service, and the food are all better than what Ive had at other places around San Mateo.The first time I visited, I was immediately in love with the display case of their food items. It. Is. Gorgeous. Now that Im a regular, I hear people commenting on it all the time. People bring their friends and say, See! I told you it was beautiful!The food is DELICIOUS. It isnt the cheapest youll find downtown, but the quality is worth it. Plus, I love that, even though they are small, they still have table service where they bring your drinks and dishes out to you. The serving sizes are just right - the salads and sandwiches are huge and Im always stuffed afterwards (but I continue to devour the entire plate each time I order). The ingredients are SO fresh and honestly theres a little bit of everything on their menu, so youre bound to find something even for a picky eater.Things Ive tried:Turmeric latte -- it was smaller than I expected, but PACKED with flavorLecso with a poached egg -- the first thing I ever tried and LOVED. Everyone who works there is super sweet and they all seem to work well together.I never went to the cafe that was there before Foreigner, but from walking by it was ALWAYS empty; nothing like the crowd Foreigner attracts. I cant recommend this place enough! Grab some friends or hangout there alone, either way you wont be disappointed with your experience.

Its been a long time since Ive met someone for a brunch date, so I wasnt sure what to expect. Happily, the food was spot on with healthy choices over carb-loaded brunches of other places (which for me is so last decade). Foreigner gave me options that were savory and fresh, choices I would not regularly make at home.Cons: Service was forgettable but did their job. Mainly, freakin noisy so early in day. Im the type that likes to hear the people Im with and not others from the tables around me. Enter loud Americans. While that isnt the fault of Foreigner, it does highlight the cavernous interior that doesnt address the echo of voices. With little effort, this can be addressed, doing their part to contribute to a more pleasant experience. For the patrons, well, thats another challenge plaguing most American restaurants but the most high-end establishments. Option: Grab a table outside if you can get one.

Well this is more like a coffee shop. Or maybe think it like a very expensive coffee shop. The food is nothing special. There are just snacks. I ordered the healthy dish and the orange was kind of bad. Some of the portions aren’t big. I don’t recommend it for brunch.

The most appalling service I have received at a restaurant in my life. Server misheard what Id said (I hope), didnt try to confirm what Id said, rebuked my friend and I (at length) for the perceived slight then subsequently hid in the toilets when I attempted to figure out what had happened after the meal. The manager also pretended to not know what had happened (there were three other people in the entire restaurant at the time). Very cowardly.

I had a really nice pour over Café au lait and one of the best breakfast sandwiches ever. They have a really great selection of coffee flavors and methods as well as quick breakfast items both sweet and savory. Ill be back to try more.

It looks a lot bigger in the photos. Its quite a small place. Probably can seat 25 people.Food wasnt great. I had the Foreigners hash or something. It was just really oily from the chorizo or whatever sausage was used.

Very impressed by this place. Thought it might be overhyped, but the food turned out EXACTLY the way it looks like in the display case (i.e., beautiful), and you can tell they put a lot of care into the food and only use the highest quality ingredients. Gets crazy busy, though there’s quite a bit of seating inside.
