Great option for spicy food lovers! Bonus points for a small, locally-owned mom and pop shop (a husband and wife run the place). Been coming here for a few years and has always been consistently tasty.Try to come early before you are hungry because they are pretty stretched and dont have a lot of workers. The place is pretty small so there may be a little bit of a wait.Good authentic Chinese food but with a vegetarian (probably vegan) twist. Food is so good that even meat eaters can enjoy it because their veggie meat is really, really good. Their faux meat options actually taste different from one another (duck is probably the most popular, I like the ribs, and chicken as well).I had their vegan dessert cake before (in the refrigerator) and it was honestly the best vegan cake Ive had. Not sure where they get it from but it was soft and moist.

Authentic Buddhist Chinese food (vegan) that features faux meats made of gluten or togu skin, to deliver the look & (mouth)feel of the real thing. One of a very few fully vegan Chinese restaurants in the region. Well executed dishes, though sometimes the flavors can converge. Highly recommend Veggie Duck. Do not recommend Hong Kong Style Fried Noodles (go to a Cantonese restaurant for this!) Excellent for plant-based diets. Due to Omicron theyre back to take-out only, though they accommodated us when we requested (and helped) to move a table outside.

This vegan restaurant is owned by a really kind and lovely family. Their mouthwatering vegan spicy basil tempuras are a must try. For people with dietary preferences, this place is a no brainer as the owners are respectful and try their best to accommodate everyones preferences.

Not a vegan, this was the first time I tried vegan Chinese food and was quite surprised. They make lots of meat dishes but with imitation meat. The duck was very realistic in terms of texture and looks. The tempura was very tasty and the noodles were delicious. A bit more expensive than regular Chinese food, but not excessively. Id come back to try more dishes. They have lower prices on many of the dishes during lunch time.

Lovely ALL VEGAN Chinese food spot run by a super cute older couple from Taiwan! They’re super friendly and have such an extensive menu! Food was really yummy, the chow fun was so chewy! Blew my expectations away. Im a carnivore who eats 70% meat diet and I loved the food. Looks like meat, texture is like meat, and taste similar. Dishes are seasoned well. This is a must try. Dishes are a bit pricey at ~$15... But it is in Palo Alto, and it is unique.The place its pretty small, so may have wait times during peak hours.

We didnt order a lot of items here, however we found that the quality between dishes tended to vary from good to amazing. The scallion pancakes are amazing, definitely get those. The tofu skin fried rice and buns were good, but not great. The pepper sauce on the table was outstanding. I normally dont like spicy sauces and I cannot tolerate high levels of spice either. However, the peppers roasted in here were so flavorful without being hot - fantastic. They also work well with the soy sauce. I think might go here again just to try that sauce on other items.

We came here for lunch on a weekday. No wait as we got there right when they opened. This was my first time to this restaurant but Im familiar with Chinese vegan food. Overall the food was great, the owner was really nice. There were 8 of us and one of us was Gluten Free and the owner took her time to circle out which dish they could accommodate for GF. Since we were a big group we ordered a bunch of entree to share. My favorite was the orange beef, mango chicken and veggie duck. The spring rolls were worth ordering as well. The food was not as salty as I typically found in Chinese vegan restaurants - which was great. One of the best and oldest vegan restaurants in the South Bay. My family has been coming here ever since they opened back in the 1990s. In all that time, not one meal, and not even one single dish, has ever been disappointing.This is vegan Chinese food as good as it gets. Huge portions. You cant go wrong with any dish, but the scallion pancakes appetizer is a must. If you like dessert, they have excellent vegan chocolate cake and carrot cake. The lady who owns it works crazy hours and is always so nice.

My wife wanted us to check this place our and although I am far from vegetarian we went to eat here. I was pleasantly surprised to find a big choice of good quality food and demi-meat dishes. Garden Fresh has the tastiest fully vegan Chinese food Ive ever had. The Kung Pao and Generals vegan chicken is phenomenal and nails the consistency and taste. The staff is very friendly and welcoming and the space has a nice hole in the wall feeling that is hard to find for places of this culinary caliber. Highly recommend and think even meat eaters would truly enjoy the food. The service speed is also phenomenal and unparalleled in my experience.

Friendly, quick service. So many veggie options. We ordered white rice with orange “chicken” and cashew “chicken”—they were both delicious, but I wish that they were a bit crispier. One thing to note is that the restaurant is small & the tables are close together, so it’s very loud when it’s busy.

I tried Garden Fresh Mountain View for the first time today and it was ok. I ordered take out, so it was not a fresh from the kitchen dining experience, but I only live 10 minutes away so the food wasnt sitting in the container for too long and was still hot when I sat down to eat it. I order the fried spring rolls and fried pumpkin appetizer, and braised eggplant medium hot lunch special.The egg rolls lacked flavor and did not really contain much else besides cabbage and maybe a few strings of carrots in them, and there was no sauce to accompany the appetizer. The outer wrapper of the egg rolls were fried crisp and provided a nice crunch. Overall I would say a little lacking in flavor.The fried pumpkin came with a thick fried batter, think something almost close to a funnel cake, but a little more crunchy. The dish was accompanied by a watery pinkish/red sauce that tasted like red sugar water. The pumpkin itself was ok, nothing spectacular and the sauce did nothing to enhance it. I ended up eating it dipped in Capital City Mambo sauce (Sweet Hot) to give it more oomph. Overall I would say this dish was also lacking in flavor.The eggplant was by far the most flavorful dish, but when biting into it was more firm then expected, almost like an undercooked texture. Flavor was good, not very spicy, execution of the dish was ok.All in all I would say the meal was fairly priced, but was not prepared with a lot of flavor. Temper your expectation when coming here.

We got the Veggie Duck, Generals Veggie Chicken, Szechuan Eggplant, and Veggie Ham Bundles. The sauces were all very yummy, and youd never guess that it was all vegan. In early December 2022, I told the restaurant owner that I would come back to eat at her restaurant. Today is Saturday, Mar. 11th, 2023 and per her hours on the restaurants window; on her menu; and online she is supposed to close at 2:30 p.m. for break. There are no public restrooms (only for paying customers).I arrived around 1:58 p.m. and was going to place an order, but needed to use the restroom. Someone was in the restroom and I wanted to wait to after using the restroom to place my order.The restaurant owner kept trying to prompt me to order because the kitchen was closing. I stated to her that I thought I had until 2:30 p.m. and that 2:30 p.m. was posted on her window and menu. Then she stated they closed at 2:00 p.m. Not only was I misinformed, but, I would have left if she stated that when I arrived at 1:58 p.m.I get life happens. She stated that she was robbed twice in the past....my suggestion to the owner.....change the closing hours for break to 2:00 p.m. having 2:30 p.m. still posted is misleading.I wont eat here. I kept my wor and came back, and I give everyone one shot on how they want our interaction to go. This is a vegetarian/vegan Chinese restaurant that has very tasty dishes including meat imitation dishes (like orange chicken and many others)....and vegetable dishes. The quality is very high and the presentation of the food is neat and positive and the service is friendly and quick. They also have a few good soup options and fresh juice options in addition to the rice and noodle options. I personally have long enjoyed the ancient Buddhist tradition of meat substitutes and this restaurant does really honestly hit the spot for me and I think it would for anyone else who is interested in healthier eating without losing taste as well.Though it is a bit pricier than fast food fare like Panda Express. The restaurant has limited seating and no outdoor dining area...but has been a long time local favorite. During this COVID-19 health and safety crisis...they have adjusted and continue to proudly serve their customers well. Highly recommended! :)

The food here is delicious! My boyfriend is vegetarian, and this is one of our go-to places on University Ave. because he can eat everything on the menu. An excellent family owned vegan restaurant. Vegan restaurants dont always have a long shelf-life in the Bay Area. They set up and fade until the next batch gives it a try. However, there are exceptions. Ive been dining at Garden Fresh since on or around the year 2000. Family run by a hubby-wife combo brings that level of care and commitment into its Chinese vegan food. Over the years, the restaurant has had a number of chefs, with various talents. The latest one has been excellent! And, the family team upgraded the dining hall, to help it make it look fresh. Its always been that familiar place that is cozy and casual. A great place to have a meal with family or friends, or bring a date.

The food here is excellent and 100% vegan. Our favorite is the Orange Veggie Beef. Prices arent cheap but are reasonable given the quality of the food. My only wish is that they had more fresh vegetable dishes on the menu; they skew pretty heavily toward meat-substitute dishes. Ive been coming to Garden Fresh since back in the early-2000’s. Though theres been a change in ownership, the food and atmosphere are generally the same. Flavors are good, though portion size has definitely become smaller while prices seemed to have increased. Service is a little slow, but friendly. Overall, good place for a nice variety of vegetarian dishes with good flavor.

My all-time favorite dish is the black pepper chicken because of its savory sauce which includes caramelized onions (my fav) as well as the string bean chicken because if it’s fresh flavor and rich spices. Garden fresh is special because of the perfect blend of veganism and traditional Chinese that everyone can enjoy vegan or not. A friend recommended I try this vegan Chinese spot and while I am skeptical of fake meat, everything was unbelievably delicious (my meat-loving partner loved it too!). This was easily the worst vegan restaurant that I or my Chinese wife have been to. The food is drenched in oil and sugar rendering it as unhealthy as a hamburger or pizza. We could not finish any of the four food items given to us. Nothing here is nutritious or satisfying. The service is also cold and rushed.Dont be fooled by the complimentary reviews left here. No doubt the reviewers are not actual vegans. Obviously they are regularly exposed to toxic animal products and oils. Save yourself the expensive lesson of patronizing this false haven.

With a nice selection of Asian vegan cuisine on the menu, its sometimes hard to believe its not real poultry/meat. I absolutely love this restaurant. I go to visit relatives in the area 4-5 times per year, and we go to dinner at Garden Fresh every single time, usually the evening I arrive. The food satisfies even the most dedicated carnivore. (Note: Im a Michael Pollan omnivore: Eat food, not too much, mostly plants) The chef draws on centuries of Chinese tradition of faking meat with vegetable products for Buddhist vegetarians. Subtle touches are masterful, like adding a bit of seaweed to fake fish dishes giving just enough hint of seafood to fool the mind. Truly an art. Cant recommend a specific dish because its all great. The host is from Taiwan, and is wonderfully friendly. Even though its 2-3 months between visits, she always remembers me (granted, not all her American customers speak Chinese with her), and asks about family members who shes met during previous visits. She recommends dishes (I usually ask), and all have been great. The restaurant is small, so arrive earlier if you can, or call for a reservation. It appears most guests are walk-ins. Not infrequently there are a few folks waiting for a table on weekends. The orientation of the dining area parallels the street, so theres lots of window exposure and natural light, which is nice.

It had to have been no more than 5 minutes from ordering to a hot plate in front of me.Comes with brown rice standard. Super fast, cheap and absolutely delicious! Im vegan and I live across the street from this place, so Ive eaten here a lot. Definitely hit or miss -how a dish is done differs from day to day, with some items being great one day and blah the next. The scallion pancakes are always good, the lemon chicken can be pretty bad,in fact most everything on the menu can be great or bad, depending on the day. The one in Palo Alto serves the same food but is much more consistent, Ive eaten there about ten times and its always been decent.If the food here were always the same, and always the top of their game stuff it would really take off and be an easy 5 stars!

I love meat and have often fought with my sister over restaurant options when she was vegetarian. However, Garden Fresh was a place that we could always agree on. The fake meat here is tasty enough to satisfy the carnivore within. Many of the dishes can be hit or miss in terms of flavor but the standouts are anything but bland. Our favorites are Kung Pao Eggplant, Orange Veggie Chicken, Veggie Ham, and Veggie Chicken Curry. Be wary during entree selection. Some of the sauces and fake meats are repeated throughout the menu so you may end up with variations of the same dish. I always like to double check with the waitress to make sure this doesnt happen.Its a very casual place with limited seating. The owner is very friendly and food comes out quickly though they can get overwhelmed when the restaurant is crowded. Parking in the lot is limited. A friend mentioned that this is the sister restaurant of Garden Fresh in downtown Palo Alto. Im not sure if this is true but I heard that the wife operates one location and the husband operates the other.Avoid: Spinach Linguine Salad with Sesame dressing (It used to be a favorite but its become quite bland and they have become stingy with the sesame sauce). The happy family and orange beef were not great when compared to the other dishes.Tip: Dont order soup because they usually give you a complimentary one after you place your order (its happened to me during both lunch and dinner). It was between veggie chow mein and veggie chow fun. Of course the veggie chow fun sounded like the funner option, but I was going for taste, not fun. Not only is this place great for vegan Chinese food, its great for Chinese food, period. Youll be fooled by many of these dishes. Great vegetarian food! Chinese food, specifically General Tsos chicken, is probably the thing I miss most about eating meat. Well, this gets you pretty darn close! The General Tsos is probably closer to a sweet and sour chicken here, but its still amazing. The Kung Pao eggplant is also delicious. You really cant go wrong!

The original owner sold this restaurant. She still provides the food, but the new owner is not good. He didn’t know the menu and the service wasn’t friendly. I won’t go there anymore. The original owner still runs the Garden Fresh in Mountain View and it is still excellent. I go there now.

Fabulous food. Some gems, like the basil tempura. Highly recommended if you love Chinese food. You dont even realize it is vegan, and you do not need to be vegan to eat here.

This little place isnt much to look at, but the staff is very friendly and the food is pretty good. My wife is a vegetarian while I am not, and the food here works well for both of us. I recommend the Kung Pao Chicken!

I have been a fan of this place since oh gosh like 90 something....first time going to the palo alto location....just as delicious, small portions...but they will fill you up, its just not the gluttonous American portions...Restaraubnt has a Small footprint so very few tables....be patient, its worth the wait!
