We havent been here for over 10 years but went on a whim. So glad we did!! There were so many choices on the sushi menu (photos were very helpful) and many we had never seen before. We asked our waiter for suggestions and ordered 3 different rolls. They were all fantastic!! Everything was so fresh and tasty. We will definitely be back. They have a happy hour from 4-530 where you can get half size rolls for half price. Such a great deal especially because they have a huge variety of rolls. Great service and relaxing atmosphere. Definitely deserving of 5 stars!

I came with a few friends and they enjoyed their food. The atmosphere is really nice and it would be a great place to have families and friends to go with to. However, my food took long and the service slightly lackluster for not giving more updates. The food was alright, it wasnt the best but it wasnt the worst. It lacked a punch to it and didnt taste up to par as to what I was expecting. It was still overall good just wasnt what I was expecting.

I’ve been here multiple times with my fiancé, normally we love it, went in yesterday around 4:10 and the service was very slow. It had been a few months since we last came but the menus got updated and looked like prices went up. Food wasn’t as good this time as the previous times we had been. My fiancé got a mojito and it was missing the sweetness, it was very bland and I got a margarita which wasn’t terrible. The only thing I had that my fiancé didn’t was the Osaka roll, something in it gave me food poisoning less than 3 hours after we ate. Spent over $100 with tip and was very disappointed overall. I’ve never gotten food poisoning from sushi before but this has definitely ruined it for me for a while, not sure if we’ll be back.

We recently celebrated a friends birthday at Genkai and had a most enjoyable experience. Our server was kind and helpful. There are so many sushi and entre options that making a decision can take some time. Though we had a party of 10 (and most of us ordered 2 to 3 rolls each) the food was delivered rather quickly. The fish was fresh and the rolls beautiful. They also have a full bar a decent selection of wines and beers on tap. My wife really enjoyed her Ramen with breaded pork dish. Nice work Genkai staff! We will be back!

The sushi is amazing! The service is okay as the waitresses always have an undertone of force pleasantry. The left side alley seating always smells like sewage. Id consider fixing the issue as Id consider that a health code violation.

When the sushi is delicious because its so fresh and melts in your mouth, itll keep you wanting more like this place.The sushi plating is exactly as the images from the menu. Pricing is average but not expensive.Other foods: The ramen is okay and the chicken katsu is very crunchy and perfect. They did steak and provided rice with it. Their teriyaki bowl is big too.I would dine in here again for sushi.

Absolutely a hidden jem for sushi here in Chico. The menu for all of the rolls is great with photos for each and the staff was super helpful. Their happy hour is a great time to go as you can get half sized rolls and try a bunch and find your favorite. Price always seems a little bit less than other options here in town but the quality is at the top.

The sushi here is surprisingly very tasty and elegant for such a fair price. The atmosphere is fun and urban with a choice to sit inside or on their patio. An overlooked appetizer is the mushroom tempura which I highly recommend for any vegetarians out there! Great service.

I came with as part of a family of 5. We ordered tons of rolls and a teriyaki chicken bowl, and we were enamored by everything we received. This is some of the best sushi weve ever had.Service was a tad slow. It seemed like they were understaffed when we came on a Friday night. Nonetheless, it was undoubtedly worth the wait.I highly recommend the Godzilla roll.

My go to hot spot! I travel from YC on the regular to ensure my sushi fix is met. Even with the changes over the years; I have always had a consistent experience. The staff are sweet, concerned and I always feel like family. During covid I ordered a platter for my bestie and I for mothers day, had it delivered to Oroville. Great company, great people. Ordered take out. Their customer service was excellent. They were busy with dine in customers but when I came back inside they were very friendly and let me know they were behind and that my order would be ready soon. Over all the customer service was great. We ordered sushi rolls and chicken teriyaki. Everything was great except for the two rolls we ordered that were supposed to be slightly scorched with a torch. The toasted part tasted a bit like like butane. But other than that it was a great experience.

Gen Kai never disappoints! They are one of my favorite sushi restaurants in Chico. Our last trip there was pretty quick too, and our waitress was fantastic. If you want a wide selection of delicious sushi, Gen Kai is a great choice!

This was my first time, but I have to say I was disappointed. The service was inattentive, and they were not busy. We had to constantly stop someone to ask for things, as nobody checked on us. It was vastly overpriced for average sushi. Both the Shrimp Poppers and Spicy Tuna Handrolls were meant to be spicy. Neither had even a hint of spiciness, and I have a rather delicate palate. I found the handroll to be extremely bland. The assorted sushi deluxe plate had excellent presentation, and was fantastic. Unfortunately, the other 2 dishes made me give our experience a C-. I doubt we will go back. We have yet to find our Go To spot in Chico for Sushi.

So i have been to 5 different sushi places in Chico, and this is by far the best one. They have great happy hour prices (Sunday = all day happy hour) and the sushi is a great value. The menu is a little intense(so many options), but some of the rolls are amazing.

Seated outside. Waited 20 minutes for someone to bring us water and take our order. Had to eventually go get someone. Waited another 20 minutes for the food and a beer that we had ordered. Ordered 5 sushi rolls. Each had half an inch of bland over cooked rice surrounding the roll. The insides weren’t much better and I am amazed at how bland the crab, fish and vegetables were. The only explanation is that the ingredients were old and possibly over cooked. Will not return unfortunately.

The sushi tasted fresh, and the service was great.What put this place over the top, though, was the fact that the chef was VEGAN FRIENDLY! My boyfriend was able to get several of there already vegetarian options and have them made vegan by the chef. This was an unexpected surprise for us, and he was very appreciative. Just make sure to talk to your server, as we dont know if this is true of all the chefs there or just the chef that was working tonight.The food, vegan and non-vegan alike, was delicious all around.

The husband says he hasnt been to this restaurant since our first date....24 years ago. He was impressed and pleased with the roll selection.I got smart finally and wrote the names of the rolls on the photos so I know what was what.The family favorite was the creamy roll. Absolutely love this place! The service is always great (I normally sit at the sushi bar and order from the chef) and there are so many options. Rolls like the Jay-4 and the Choo-Choo-Train are amazing every time, and I love to try whatever new things show up. Prices are up there, but extremely worth it for the quality you get! Portions were also satisfying to me; I could never eat more than two rolls in a sitting myself.

The service was fair and friendly. Came in on a day it wasnt crowded. I took notice that the floors were super sticky but didnt want to make a fuss. Ate and dined off the menu than left, the food has to be tired again for a fairer rating. The presentation an overall dinning experince is 6/10.

We had standard maki and ngiri at Genkai and it was the worst fish to rice ratio weve ever experienced. The rolls were mostly rice and the fish on the Nigri was half of what we typically see at other places. We would have expected much better quality for their pricing. It was more like fish flavored rice than sushi. We had a much better food experience at Japanese Blossoms. Giving it two stars because the servers were friendly and thoughtful.

I ordered a roll that clearly showed and was labeled as having sliced avocado, but they just then poured a watered-down guacamole sauce that hardly tasted like avocado! I regret not checking the order before I left. The their bay roll was like 70% rice, 20% lettuce, 10% shrimp,I usually try a place 3 times before rating and I was disappointed all times. They take forever to seat you even when its near empty. I then waited longer than normal twice for food compared to other sushi restaurants in the area.

I used to absolutely love this place, but I was there earlier this week and it was the worst experciece ever. It was a Monday night, there were only 2 people working, they were busy for a Monday, but not that busy. We waited 10 minutes before anyone even aknowledged we were there and waiting for a table. Once we sat down we ordered right away (we knew what we wanted) we then waited AN HOUR for 2 rolls to come out. I had ordered 2 rolls to go and it took them yet ANOTHER HOUR. there were other people that came in after us, and were served right away. The waiter clearly knew we were upset, but never apologized for the slow service, didnt offer a discount or anything. It will be a very long time before I go again... This ruined it for me.

The service was really slow tonight and there was only 4 tables with guests. We heard the belll 3 times telling our server that our food was ready before he brought it to our table. He was not busy with customers but doing things at the bar with beer. Ive been dining Gen Kai for 25 years across both locations. The food is great as usual.One bit of feedback on the new menu: The combo plates. After decades, I had to stop ordering them. Why? California Rolls. Dont want. At all. Give me a bit of tonkatsu, yakitori, etc. Yes, CA rolls are cheap and popular, but choice made it work. Now Im buying unagi that I know has worse margins.

Some of the food was good, and Im told its not normally like this, but on a really quiet Thursday night our server was pretty inattentive, we had to get up to ask for things like silverware and napkins, then the ultimate ruiner for me was biting into a piece of tempura broccoli and finding it was rotten inside. Since we had ordered two dishes that had it, my girlfriend gave me hers to try, which also turned out to be only slightly less rotten.Its hard to imagine that started out rotten and was battered anyway, which suggests theyre storing food far too long after prep, which is also scary. The remainder of my night was spent nauseated by the taste of this rancid broccoli over and over again, which I couldnt seem to mask.I dont think Im willing to give them another shot for a while.
