Well.. I’m rating this place from about 27-30 years ago when there was a Nihon market in the front and just a small sushi bar in the very back with about 7-10 stools total and I wonder if it’s the same chefs from those days… probably not since that sushi was amazing and did not cost an outrageous amount.Our Friend Toyota who was a sushi chef from Japan and worked for 4 decades at Something’s Fishy told us about this place where he went for his sushi on his days off.. it was absolutely fresh, great choices and chefs knew what they were doing and they were Nihonge.. Toyota told me and my brother about this secret find since I lived in Japan for a number of years 40 years ago.. and liked to speak Nihongo w the chefs so I don’t lose my second language… But according to the reviews I read here.. it’s like REALLY pricey and maybe the market is gone?!I had moved away decades ago and have been back to care for my folks since lockdown first happened. I was looking for a local market to buy authentic groceries like shizo leaves and mushrooms for my sukiyaki and remembered the nice little market in the front but it looks like it’s turned into a niche place and sooo very unaffordable place for me.. even for LA
Ive been coming here for years. Go-san and his wife are such pleasant people. The omakase is the best in LA. Decor is...San Fernando Valley chic, but I personally get a great deal of enjoyment out of how the restuarant is set up. Particularly fun when inviting a friend who is unfamiliar with the quality of the food. Eat that Holy Cow!
Exceptional sushi! Mostly classic nigiri (no spicy mayo or sweet sauce drowned rolls, funky fusion dishes, etc. here). Go-san leans on heavy use of truffles, truffle oil and gold flake. We went for omakase (chefs choice) tasting menu and werent disappointed. Just about everything we tasted here was a revelation. They dont serve any alcohol, and the place looks unassuming to say the least (plain non-desript sushi sign out front and interior decor reminds you of a old tiny hole-in-the-wall burrito shack). Also note that all sushi is priced per piece (you dont get 2 pc. of nigiri as with most placed) and be prepared to pay top dollar ($150-200 per person is typical), but well worth it IMO for an occasional splurge, considering the quality.

Imaginitive presentation, and top quality fresh fish. The bamboo shoot and tuna flight are standouts.
The sushi here is on another level. A meal could easily run $200+ per person but the food is soo good its worth it.
Fabulous sushi here. Order omakase and let Go take you on a flavor adventure. You’ll find a wide selection of fresh seafood here and you’ll probably enjoy Go’s wry sense of humor. Get there early in the evening because you want to sit at the bar. Very basic decor.
The chef wore soiled/stained cloths with an apron and a face mask, which he kept touching with his hand to adjust and eventually took off, that’s when we left.We were still eating and they were sweeping the floor and pouring water into the refrigerator with fish put to the side only, dirty water could have splashed onto the food!!Shocked that they would charge such premium price. Not a good reflection of the sushi chef profession.The sushi were tasty, but way overpriced.
If youre willing to pay premium prices for each piece of sushi but demand the highest quality and ever changing and unique interpretations then this is the place for you! Each component is thought out and home made, every sauce made in house, and the fish is fresh and in season. The tastes are delicious and well worth it if you dont mind $6-14 per piece. Some is less expensive like the highly recommended tamago, but dont be surprised by the final bill. Enjoy!
Wow, what an unbelievable experience. Food is fantastic and because its a reservation only kind of experience, the chef and staff are basically focused on your food and experience.
Ive been a regular for 22 yrs. It effects my monthly spending but its just worth it, truly the best sushi Ive had in my life .new York, l.a. Washington, no one does it like Go .

Sushi is great here. However. I’ll sometimes get to go orders and I just went in tryin to get just a few pieces to go…not 4,5,6. Just 2-3 and I needed some eel sauce too. We’ll they wouldn’t do any to go orders bc they were busy so I asked if they could just do a small small thing if eel sauce to go (that’s what I really needed for something I’m making for dinner and sushi was gonna be a little ap) they wouldn’t give me any eel sauce even though I’ve spent thousands here bc it’s super expensive (worth the sushi) but the customer service is kinda trash. Even in the past the women working there is not nice and she should be considering how much you spend.Anyway. I won’t ever come back now bc this experience ruined it for me. All over a super small amount of eel sauce. Smdh.
Came here with my sister during a trip to LA and sat at the bar. The chef is very knowledgeable about his fish and very welcoming. He makes you feel so comfortable. The Santa Monica Uni is so sweet and delicious it actually converted my sister into a uni-fan. I highly recommend coming out here for their authentic sushi.
The fish here was amazing for a real sushi lover. The place itself is super weird. If you can get past the appearance and fishy smell when you walk in, you will love the meal.You will pay top dollar for this restaurant!!!I personally like to have a sake with my sushi and that aint happening here as you can not BYOB and they do not serve alcohol of any kind.Id give the quality of sushi 4 1/2 stars but I think the price and the ambience will keep me headed to other places who do a better job. Maybe just a little too eclectic for me.

If you do not understand how high quality sushi works you would be like the reviewers here that gave1* and complained about portions. There are many discount roll sushi places littering LA for them. If on the other hand you understand that high quality fish is extremely limited and expensive and if chef Go has to pay $38 a pound for Blue Fin tuna that is hand selected and sold only to a small handful of chefs in LA at 4AM in DT LA you should not expect a $10 roll stuffed full of it. The quality of the product and the expertise of the preparation demands and is worth every penny of this expensive and amazing restaurant. It really is quite a discount because they did not spend $2M building some glam decor or hire models to wait tables. In fact table service is not really their thing. Sit at the bar, do omakase if you can. Expect to pay $100+ per person and leave having eaten some of the finest sushi in the US. Those in the know, those that can afford it eat here. Simply amazing food! I have eaten at Gos for over 15 years. I see many regulars that come in and simply eat, they do not want to be seen or otherwise show off. They simply want, and can afford, the best there is.
Much more expensive sushi than youd expect by looking at the shop, but well worth the price. A very authentic, nigiri sushi joint. No need for soy sauce as the chef will properly season the fish for you before serving. Reservations only
If you’re in it for the food and not the ambiance, you won’t be disappointed. Some of the best sushi I’ve ever had - but it feels like you’re dining in a liquor store. But not in a hipster Brooklyn kinda way, in a valley grit kinda way. But, so tasty.
My girlfriend and I decided to try this place based on the pics of food. While I have no reason to doubt the quality and taste, we left after left standing for 10 minutes while the older Japanese waitress (probably wife of the chef/owner) walked back and forth (doing mundane tasks) without so much as letting us know whether we were going to be waiting another 10 minutes or an hour. There were 2 tables open (no reservation signs) but we were not seated, but when asked her if there was a waiting list, she rudely waved me off and mumbled something. The food here may be good, but she definitely should not be in the role of interfacing with the customer. If that’s her normal mode, I imagine this place is losing business because of her.
Its totally unique place in La! Looks like a hole in the wall But its a michelin star restaurants **** by taste! The best place for sushi 🍣 Defenetly not for cheap people, who looks for huge portion for lower price!
Ive been to Jiro in Japan and every other Trendy Sushi spot in LA. Gos Mart is very very good. All of the fish was super fresh, real wasabi (although I ate everything as prepared and didnt dunk each piece in soy sauce and wasabi). Very chill environment, cool R & B music playing in the background, the chef didnt know the words but he was humming along to the Beyonce & Mary J Blige as he prepared the Sushi Lol The the chef was very cool and his assistants were also cool. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for with cheap sushi. A friend of mine has been recommending this place to me for years, glad I finally came and definitely will be back. Some of the best sushi you can get in LA, hands down.
My first good Omakase in L.A. - I loved the environment and there were several nice people sitting beside me. The place was really cozy and the staff was really friendly. I am also grateful for the seating arrangement and the people next to me.

I have no idea how some of the reviews above was given. This place is horrible. Fish quality was not good. Waitress was so rude, kept asking us if the price was okay with us. I would never come back here and I would advise anyone to never come to this place. Found two hairs in my sushi and our iced tea had seaweed that fell in it. Disgusting, and lost for words.

Up there with the best....a tendency to use truffles and truffle oil seems to make Go a bit unique - pricey but well worth it in this unassuming, typically modest Japanese setting that you may recall from Nozawa, Mori and Zo.

To go with my lover, the interior isnt as good as a Chinese restaurant with fast food, and my wallet is completely empty... My friend of 20 years and I are crushed and have expensive snacks and sake in broad daylight. Do you want to go eat? The quantity is exactly the same, the taste is double and the price is triple.

2023-06-07 23:21:51Truly an incredible experience. The chef told us that fresh fish is flown in from Japan three times a week and the quality shows why. Omakase is a must have and you’ll be presented with some of the most beautiful dishes you can imagine: the tuna quartet was unbelievable and the baby shrimp was some of the best I’ve had. The price is no joke ($250 pp if you drink) but if you’re looking for the best LA has to offer by way of sushi, this is worth it. Along with Brothers in Woodland Hills, this is the best sushi I’ve had in the US.

Once inside, its pretty empty and looks like a market when you walk in; it used to be a seafood market but converted into a small restaurant. No decorations or anything fancy. No TVs, etc; just a small sushi bar. Prob not a good place for kids but Go and the staff do try to accommodateService: was great. Sat at the bar, Go was serving/hosting and he was great. Other staff was friendly tooFood: great! We did Omakase so Go chose everything for us and it was fantastic. Every dish was great, except maybe the grilled bamboo. It was good, just not my thing.Cost: bill came out to $875, without tip.

It’s listed in the top places to eat sushi in the greater Los Angeles area, but I’ve eaten sushi all over and I have yet to be anywhere where it’s as good is this place.

2017-12-22 20:57:00This is my favorite sushi in LA and Ive been to all the big ones. Very unique flavor and technique. Probably the freshest fish out there in LA and just so tasty. If this wasnt so far away I would definitely come here more often. Be prepared to pay for the quality.

2022-12-08 23:42:21Gos Mart is my favorite sushi bar ever. I used to come here for years before the pandemic. This is not the type of sushi establishment to order a Philadelphia roll. Go’s Mart is for serious omakase sushi fans. We’ve eaten sushi for more than 30 years in LA and Go’s Mart is absolutely at the top of our list. I highly suggest ordering the omakase but if I was ordering individually my favorites are the hairy crab sushi, ankimo sashimi, Hokkaido scallop sushi, Hokkaido uni…and I could just keep on writing everything on the menu. The restaurant is fabulous. IYKYK
