The food is excellent with great service. Its alway the quality of the ingredients which really is highlighted in every bite! The atmosphere is very nice with table views of the creek.I always prefer the traditional Japanese dishes like sushi or sashimi and rolls with one excellent ingredient and the ingredients in all cases were excellent. Uni was expensive but my favorite and was very tasty and fresh. Dont miss the dessert and my favorite was tempura persimmon with vanilla ice cream.Service was attentive and pleasant. I was happy I could use my limited Japanese. Will make this a regular stop when in SLO.

Goshi is a higher-quality Japanese restaurant thats still a bit casual. Staff are excellent and the food is great. Lunch specials are $22+, so you should expect to pay $40+ each after appetizers/drinks, tip, and tax.The miso soup was excellent, with good rich flavor. The edamame was perfectly steamed but too salty. The Udon soup had a good broth and nicely fermented tofu, while the rice bowl was delicious with a great variety of fish. The Nigri was adequate, with excellent texture but little flavor. Finally, the accompanying ginger and wasabi had great strong flavor.

Super fresh sushi. We got the sushi boat combo ($80) with enough sushi/roll to satisfy both of us. One thing of note, all the nigiri had a dollop of wasabi between the fish and rice so dont add any of your own.The 375ml bottle of sake ($18) that the waitress recommended was perfect combo for the sushi.The super treat was the order of uni ($22/2) we got in that it was super fresh and served uniquely on a bit of seaweed that you picked up and made a mini hand (finger?) roll with.

So so sooooo good! Would give 10/5 stars if I could. Very authentic. Sashimi was fresh and nigiri was prepared by the boss himself - we had the local murasaki uni and hotate sashimi.Cooked food was also on point - we had the Nabeyaki udon. Portion was big and tempura was well fried.Easily comparable against great restaurants in Japan. Will definite return if I visit SLO again!

Best Japanese food in the area! Be prepared to wait in line for lunch or dinner as so many others think so too.Fresh quality sashimi and sushi. Tempura is perfect. Grilled items are tasty. Soups are hot and delicious. Rice is all around a requirement.

I had lunch here for the first time with two friends. It was my first time so I suggested that they choose the sushi rolls that we will share.Eating at Goshi was a delight! The dog was high quality and covered with ingredients. The garlic crunch roll for example did not just have a few slices of crisp garlic but was covered!Definitely try Goshi, you will not be disappointed!

Struggling for words- best meal I have ever had. Started with squid tip, a sublime experience of texture, slight crunch of fresh squid body over rice. Then eggplant tempura, so lightly deep fried, it is a mystery to me how this is possible. Finally Amberjack collar, quite literally the best fish Ive ever tasted. Must have come from Florida? Otherwise how perfectly fresh?

My husband has been to Japan twice, and even he said this is the closest thing he’s ever eaten compared to Japan’s authenticity. He said he’s as good as it gets. Also, I would highly recommend making a reservation because we waited about 45 minutes on a Tuesday night because that’s how busy and delicious they are. This place deserves 5 starts hands down. I don’t even eat raw fish, but I did last night because it was sooooo good! I’ve also never had noodles like that before and it was fantastic! And everything is VERY reasonably for the presentation and flavor of the food. Both the tea, beer and saki was delicious; as well as, the green tea mochi balls we had for dessert. Everything is fantastic and we will go here again! + the food and service was professional and quick despite how busy they were for a Tuesday. Well worth the wait and the BEST Sushi we ever had in our lives next to japan’s sushi. You must go!

The food was very yummy! They dont do substitutions, so youre stuck with the fake crab in some rolls. The dumplings were okay, you need to eat them fast cause they get cold quickly. Our server was good, you need to get there like 15 minutes before they open, they are very popular!

Really lives up to the hype. The price is really reasonable. All the food for 2 was about $110 (including otoro which is amazing). Stacks up to if not better than import Japanese fish I’ve had for double the price in Toronto. My new go to spot if I’m feeling more authentic sushi.

We got here at 1 on a Wednesday and were seated after ~10 min of waiting. The lot on the side was full, so we had to find meter parking on the streets nearby. After we ordered, we ended up waiting about half an hour before our food came out due to a mix up with the kitchen.The fish was fresh, but honestly wasnt sure if it was worth the price or the wait. Might be the best option there is in SLO though. The miso soup that came with the sets was a little salty, but mightve been because we got our food near their afternoon closing hours.- Tempura & Sashimi Set (3.5/5): Tempura was very good and crispy, but this probably had the lowest price:value ratio- Sashimi Set (4/5): Fish was very fresh - it basically melted in your mouth!- Chirashi Bowl (5/5): Definitely the best deal out of the sets. San Luis Obispo has at least 8 sushi restaurants just going from a count in my head, probably more. Goshis is without a doubt the most delicious and authentic (many are also lovely). Authenticity does not mean snootiness or a lack of options however, they have the same Japanese staples most sushi places do, along with a huge selection of more uncommon and unique ingredients like uni, natto, otoro and chu toro. You can also have an amazing omakase experience that the less expensive sushi restaurants just dont offer. The otoro combo is worth every penny (you get some pieces of the trimmed chu toro with it) and the crab and asparagus roll is sooo perfect. There will be a wait most nights, 15 to 45 minutes, but its so so worth it and with the creamery growing its easier than ever to wait until they message you. Please please please go here.

Ordered the deep fried chicken ($12) and kanpai boat ($80). The boat comes with cucumber salad, miso soup, daily appetizer, and salad. I noticed that there was a bit of mold on the lemon in my cucumber salad (pictures attached) after I had eaten part of it already. I informed the waitress and they brought out another salad. We informed them that we do not want the salad anymore nor felt comfortable eating the rest of the starters and asked for it to be removed from our bill. After we finished with the sushi, they brought the bill and $1.50 had been removed from the moldy-lemon cucumber salad. We thought that reduction was insulting due to the lemon having what was obviously mold and having partially eating the salad that it was a part of. (Note: There is lemon in the water and lemon in the salad.)We asked for the manager and realized it was the manager that had given brought out the replacement for the salad originally. We had expressed that taking $1.50 out of the bill was not good enough since we had partially consumed the salad. We asked if there was anything else they could do but the manager rudely refused to even offer us even a dessert. The real issue here, besides the moldy lemon, was the temperament of the manager. He was very condescending and had a clear lack of empathy for the situation. Goshi is supposed to be a fine dining experience, the last thing you would want to do is doubt the quality of the food.We expressed again that we know there was mold on the lemon and that we should be adequately compensated for it being there, but he continued to be rude and condescending. Finally, he suggested that we not tip our waitress as a recourse. As people who have been been in a customer-serving role, that was not an option and the burden should not fall on her. The starters (miso soup, cucumber salad, salad) are preassembled so it could have been sitting there for who knows how long. Is it supposed to fall on the waitress to inspect food quality? Again, the manager was not being helpful in the situation and after he had suggested we not tip the waitress, we knew that there was no use in arguing anymore.The situation was unfortunate and we will not be returning. We could have looked past the moldy lemon if even a sincere apology could have been made. It is very clear that this place does not value its customers or its employees.

Heard a lot of positive feedback from friends who told us how great the food was, so my party was pretty hyped.When we got there, we were seated in under 5 minutes (after we made an OpenTable reservation), and after placing our order, we were given the basic starters of miso soup and a side salad about 5 minutes after.However, after about 15 minutes of waiting, we were informed that the kitchen was behind on orders. We had to put forward our best effort to be patient and understanding, but we ended up waiting 45 minutes for the first real appetizer we ordered. The entrees came in at 50, 55, and 60 minutes in, respectively. At the end of our meal, we were not offered any type of compensation for our time, at all. Nor did any manager or supervisor approach our table at any time during the extraordinarily long wait.We really wanted to love this authentic Japanese restaurant, but after about 30 minutes, my party was seriously considering walking out and grabbing some fast (or at least, faster) food. This experience has been negative enough for us to likely never return, nor will we be recommending this restaurant to our family and friends.P.S. Many thanks to our server who apologized profusely for the wait, and regularly checked in on us throughout the long evening. Servers were not to blame in any way, and we wish them the best.

Wow! This was great in every way. We came for dinner. We started with edamame, done perfectly; and the deep fried tofu, which was the only disappointment. It was in a wonderful brothy sauce and wrapped in seaweed but the size of each cube was too large to get the right proportion of crispy outside to soft inside. Our main meal was miso soup, lovely; garden salad, served in ice cold bowl lots of veggies with crispy greens & best ginger dressing; seaweed salad, cucumber salad, veggie roll with smelt roe, veggie Tempura, and finely what I highly highly recommend, their spicy yellowfin tuna roll with green roe and wasabi and jalapenos, so so good! We were stuffed, (there was only 2 of us) but we both shared the black sesame ice cream, just curious. Dessert was amazing, sesame butter ice cream with black sesames in it, yum yum. We will definitely come again soon.

We stopped by for dinner.We were told to wait for 45mins to 1hr, so we wrote down our names, then took a troll in down town. It only took 20 mins to receive a text to let us know our table were ready. It was fantastic, the food, the atmosphere, the service. Shout out to Lauren, our server were being the best!!. The name has changed over the years, but this neighborhood Japanese spot is delightful. The black cod and the albacore tatashi are must haves. If fish is not to your taste, the tempura and teriyaki offerings are excellent. The service is friendly and helpful, they have small tables but can accommodate large groups on request.

Seriously one of the best sushi lunches Ive ever had - and I eat a lot of sushi including living in Japan. Ive never seen sake kama, grilled tuna cheekbone on a lunch menu before. Its one of my favorite dishes, so that was very exciting. Everything was cooked perfectly, the wait staff was great and we really enjoyed the relaxed vibe of the restaurant. Many sushi places these days cover their rolls with lots of external flavoring which detracts from the sushi. It was refreshing to get authentic sushi where natural flavors were brought out. Not to sound cheesy but this is the best sushi I have in a while almost as good as sushi I had in Japan on the Kouzushima Island. The udon noodles were great, not too salty. My daughter and I celebrated her 18th birthday and the matcha green tea ice cream was great and complimentary. Thanks for making it special!

We went to dine in one time and the place is cozy, quiet and makes an interesting and authentic place. The food is excellent, the service is great, discreet and very polite. Its an authentic Japanese place, you will find fresh fish and typical meals, not the modern Americanized versions of it.Then the quarantine arrived and after weeks at home, we missed their amazing chirashi and decided it was important to support our local restaurants.So we placed an order by phone (they also take Foodjets but we prefer paying the actual restaurant than a third party app) and went to pike-up our food.The take-out was amazing, they improved each dish to give us the best service ever. Goshi Sushi is the best sashimi place I have ever had. To me, Goshi is better than Southern California or New York. I always go to Japanese chef’s Sushibplace and this is the best!! Had a wonderful time. Sat at the bar ordered sashimi and nigiri. Large list of pretty unique options like live baby Abalone, grunt, three different types of Toro (I think blue fin, salmon, Hamachi), fire cracker squid, monk fish... Honestly I cant remember them all. Fantastic, everything was fresh and the pieces of fish were huge. I recommend eating at the bar if you have a party of two, interacting with the chefs is a lot of fun. Will be returning if Im in town again.

Roll was very good. Teriyaki chicken dinner and tempura was very good. Sukiyaki beef was tough and tasteless but vegetables and accompanying dishes were authentic Japanese and good. Service was just so-so. We had to ask the waiter three times to remind him to bring our hot tea and also three more times to ask him to bring the roll. He wasnt that busy because he would go back and clean the menus and the glasses and we had to wave him over to ask him again.

This restaurant is serving what has to be the best Chirashi I ever had.Everything is perfectly balanced: the quality of the fish, the thickness of the cuts, the freshness of the ingredient, the quality of the wasabi, the selection of fish types. I could go on an on, but honestly youd have to try to believe it.To me, the rice is usually the least interesting part of a Chirashi but even here, they succeed to make it as appealing as the rest of the bowl, with perfectly cooked and flavored rice along with thin mushroom and omelette cuts.The only downside of this restaurant is how far it is from home. Will hopefully be back for more one day or another.

Five stars for the service, quality, and creativity of this restaurant. Each staff member was friendly and treated us with respect, the menu had a large variety of dishes to choose from, and the quality of the food itself was absolutely fantastic. The Kampai boat for two was the perfect amount of food, and included ice cream at the end, and it paired super well with Asahi which they serve in a frosted-cold glass. Overall, our experience was great and we hope to come back again!

This was my favorite restaurant in SLO when I was a student. They did a remodel and I finally had a chance to eat there since I graduated nearly 3 years ago.Expect to wait for a while. Though this isnt news at all. The service is accommodating and spectacular as always. However, I feel like the menu definitely changed and they dont have as many affordable meal sets with sushi as they did back when I was a college student there.However, its authenticity hasnt changed. I really liked my kitsune udon and salmon bowl. It was presented beautifully and I thoroughly enjoyed how fresh the fish was.

Just wonderful. Was brought here by my Husband for my Birthday. Attentive staff, truly beautiful dishes and the best Sashimi Ive ever had in my life. Perfect food down to the variety of cucumber in the Sunomo salad. Wonderful time. We ate over two hours and were able to eat the Japanese way, no gobbling. Extremely disappointed by the hours of operation. Dont open until 11:30am for lunch then abruptly closes at 1:30pm. Never heard of a lunch place that wasnt opened until at least 2pm. Sad to see what has come of the Downtown SLO restaurant business. Not sure I will bother to dine at places that dont cater to varying lunch schedule needs in the future.

I used to go to Goshi frequently back when I went to Cal Poly from 2012-2016. Recently I visited while doing a road trip across the California coast and I was happy to see that the quality and atmosphere has stayed exactly the same as I remembered it, and now with a little more room! This is by far the best Japanese food on the central coast. You will want to have a reservation to get dinner here, but my personal favorite is grabbing one of the lunch specials here. Make sure you show up 15-20 min before the open to get your name on the list though! Even during weekdays it can be competitive to get a lunch spot.

This is a very popular spot. There is a sign up sheet outside to request a seat at a table or the bar surrounding the chef work area.The prices are reasonable, especially considering the quality. I got the Salmon Nigri Plate, which includes an amazing Seared Salmon Belly. Beautiful.I also tried Seaweed Tuna and Scallop rolls, and, they too were fresh and imaginatively garnished. The beautiful presentation matched the beautiful flavors.The service was quick and efficient and the green unsweetened ice tea was refreshing. This place is a must visit over and over again.

Im not sure its possible to overstate how much I love this place. Best sushi Ive ever had anywhere. When I fly into SLO, either for work or for myself, this is always my first stop. Everything is so fresh, theres a great selection, and the staff and sushi chefs are very friendly. This is a small venue so be prepared to wait if you dont show up right at opening or have a reservation, but its absolutely worth the wait.

Who would have guessed there was really good sushi in SLO. Friend found the place via yelp and decided to give it a try. The fish from the special menu was excellent, its mostly imported from Japan. And at first it sounds pricey but in after discovering the high quality and richness of the fatty options its worth its price. Id say if you like nigri go for the omakase and other 3 of them, its only 5 pieces each and will set you back 75.00. If the restaurant was in LA or NYC you could easily spend double that for that quality.The pork cutlet was delicious as well. Definitely recommend it.

By far the best Japanese restaurant on the Central Coast! A couple things I recommend are the Albacore Tataki and the Baked Green Mussels. We have been eating here regularly for 20 years and have yet to have an unpleasant experience. YOU WILL NOT be disappointed! But put your name in and then go have a drink at CIDER. This is the best sushi in the area, in my opinion. The fish is extremely fresh and the sushi is very traditional. They have cuts that are hard to find at other sushi places in town, such as Toro. The rest of their food is amazing too. Lots of traditional Japanese food.Timing is important here. If you want to get in and eat quickly, make sure to go at lunch, or get there ten or fifteen minutes before they open at five for dinner. There will be a line of people already waiting, and the restaurant fills up almost immediately after opening.

I dont know that much about all the menu options, but what we got, the Sukiyaki and the Albacore Tataki, were excellent. We were seated at the counter so we got to talk to their head sushi chef about their ingredients, especially their seafood selection for sushi and sashimi. Goshi is pretty much *the* Japanese restaurant of SLO. The quality of the sushi and other dishes they serve is usually very high. Tables can be hard to get, so definitely make a reservation ahead of time. Almost everything is wonderful, I love their eel bowl, their sushi, and their sukiyaki. One thing that I would avoid though is the tonkatsu bowl, when I got it it was just too soggy and not crispy at all.

FOOD POISONING: I went to Goshi with my fiance on 4/13/2015 and although the sushi was probably better than Sumo, or some places in SLO, the first two rolls came out around fifteen minutes apart, which I found somewhat annoying in case you want to share/mix and match rolls. The third roll never came out and after twenty minutes or so the waitress was nice enough to notice that we never got it, and reminded the sushi bar to make it. This was not a busy night or anything like that, so I did not see any particular reason that there would be a long wait for any of the rolls. Anyways, when we got our third roll, my fiance have one piece and it was too spicy for her, so I ate the other seven pieces. Unfortunately for me, this was without a shadow of a doubt, the roll that gave me food poisoning. I know this is probably something that is eventually unavoidable if you own a restaurant, but food poisoning is pretty miserable, and along with what seemed like poor service, I do not think that I will go back to Goshi Sushi in the future.

I had an extremely displeasing experience with this establishment. I went to order a shrimp tempura roll and udon for pick up. While waiting to be helped, a lady comes to pick up her food where the hostess confirmed the order being 2 udon and whatever else was in the order. I saw the lady be given two bags with one having two to-go bowl containers. I go to order my food after this lady saying how I would like a plain udon. The hostess responds saying that they dont do udon to go. I asked if she was sure. She said they only serve udon in house. I said that the lady she had just helped had udon in her order. She responded saying that the lady didnt, to where I said, Yes she did. She once again said she didnt, then goes to explain that they dont do udon to go because the texture of the noodles change. I can understand that, but she had just served someone two udon bowls to go right in front of me. I made requests for her to work with me, mentioning I was going to eat it as soon as I left, so I wasnt worried about the texture changes. I also asked if I could order at the table and ask for a to-go container. That was also denied. I ended up leaving without ordering because it doesnt make sense to me to deny me that food item if someone had just received the same order to go in front of me. There was also no notation, that I saw, mentioning that they only do udon in house. There is the argument that I could have just eaten in house, but I do not feel comfortable eating out in public yet, especially in places where not everyone is wearing a mask (even when requested by the establishment). I am unsure if this was a microaggression expressed by the hostess. I really hope it was not as I am an African American woman and this was close to traumatic in the current climate of the United States. I had really hoped for a better experience with all the positive reviews.

Best sushi I have ever had, always friendly, always fresh. I have been going since I was 4 years old. However, for the past 5 months I have tried to call for a reservation, they dont answer the phone EVER and when I walk in they are always booked. 5 stars for everything else though. Much love

Goshi was a real treat. Oscar did a beautiful job preparing our dinner which looked and tasted wonderful. For a slower night i was surprised to feel overlooked by our server who forgot one of our starters and seemed impacient with us but besides that was kind. Looking forward to going back.

Goshi is our #1 Sushi spot on the Central Coast. They have recently renovated and the prices slightly increase, but the changes have kept all the regulars (like us) and gained new attention. It no longer feels like the hidden hole in the wall sushi jem, now its in a class all its own.

Hands down the best. The service is AMAZING and is just as good as you would receive living in Japan (and I should know because I did live there), plus the food is absolutely delicious. I couldnt find a bad thing to say about this place if I tried. Also if there is a wait to be seated its totally worth however long it is.

I love this place... All of the food is spectacular, from the sushi to the miso soup to the ice cream. I love getting the boat which comes with a ton of sushi, tempura, soup, edamame, ice cream.. Youll leave stuffed. Its a great atmosphere and has really good service. Highly recommended ! This is one of the best restaurants in SLO.

Its a small spot, been there forever. Their sushi is the best, hands down. Never been disappointed. Only poor thing is that if you go when its busy, and patrons are lagging, the wait time to be seated can get a bit long, especially since there isnt much room to sit while waiting to be seated.
