We have been dying for a good DimSum restaurant in Chinatown. We found it! Their DimSum was fresh and delicious. We had the shrimp dumplings three different ways. The fried ones were different with a great taste. We started with a big bowl of Won Ton soup which was filling. We were happy to find this place down from Grant street on Jackson Street. Enjoy this place for DimSum or the regular Chinese menu. People were happy eating their dishes!

Pretty dim sum overall but dont get that layered cake. It was awful: doughy and too sweet with no other discernable flavor. The vegetable dishes were oddly all overpriced. The place seems to be coasting along the fact that Obama once ate there.

In the heart of Chinatown, this place is an amazing spot for dim sum!The prices are quite reasonable compared to other restaurants in the area and the taste and quality of the dishes were good!The food came out fast and quick aside from some of the more special or unique dishes which came a little later.Overall the place is a great, affordable place for tasty dim sum!

We went for the dim sum and the food is really good. Pretty authentic. We also ordered one Hot and sour soup. So good.The only lacking is they don’t have enough staff. It was hard to get the attention of the waiter to get a replacement of chopsticks pr spoon because they were running for the other tables.

We have eaten authentic dim sum at this restaurant several times.In the lunch last Sunday, the restaurant charged 18-percent gratuity fee in advance. This was the first time for them to do so for us. There was no description in voice or in text.How much the gratuity will be paid should be decided by customers. If the restaurant charges, they should notice gratuity in advance in front of the entrance.

Good no frills Chinese restaurant in the heart of China town. We ordered a bunch of dim sum and they were all great. Our favourite were the soup dumplings and the shrimp ones. Make sure you leave some time though as the spot gets very busy!

Most over priced dim sum restaurant Ive ever been too. $20 for fried rice?? $10 for 4 little shrimp dumplings? I get the idea is to share some of the dishes but come on.The food tastes fine and similar to any other Cantonese dim sum place Ive been too. The shrimp fried rice was great and the portion was enough to share with two other people.

Really overpriced and not enough portion. Waiter didn’t bring us rice that we ordered. After serving food no one came to the table to check on us. We sat there and finally got attention,paid quickly and left. Not sure if they charged us for rice that never was served. Anyways don’t recommend.

Great dim sum spot in SF Chinatown. Pretty busy on a Sunday morning, but we got there before it opened, so we got a table right away. My favorites were a little different here, with turnip cakes, XO spicy rice noodle roll, steamed beef short ribs with black pepper sauce, and pan fried leek and shrimp dumplings topping the list. I dont know if it tops our favorite dim sum spots in the east bay, but great for our weekend away from the kids in SF!

Great place for Dim Sum. Authentic Chinese food. It has two levels of dining area. The restroom is on the lower floor.The tea is $1.75 per person.They are having a new item called “Pork & shrimp bean curd skin roll in dried scallop soup “. Highly recommend it.

This place was an amazing little discovery! The food was absolutely delicious. We ordered Mongolian beef, chicken fried rice, hot and sour soup, and the potstickers. Everything was phenomenal! We have never had such a flavorful hot and sour soup, and the potstickers were so tender and juicy. We came close to closing, yet they graciously seated us, and the food arrived quickly. They even packaged our leftovers for us before we left. We will be adding this as a stop any time we are in China town!

This was our first trip to San Francisco and Chinatown. We absolutely enjoyed our meal here, with their huge selection of Dim Sum lunch choices and friendly service. My personal favorites were the Shrimp and Cilantro dumplings and the Rolled and Pan Fried Noodles. It was everything I was hoping for. Yum!

Being an Asian, the food was generally acceptable and with flavor. However, there was barely any customer service provided and to charge 15% gratuity (tips) is just not welcoming. I will probably not visit as a tourist unless I am so craving for Chinese food.

I ordered lobster With black bean sauce and chicken fried rice. I was told lobster was $70 before I ordered. They made a mistake and brought me lobster with ginger sauce I accepted it and didn’t say anything. When the bill came price of lobster became $87 and then the automatically charged me 18% tip. I had to remind the owner that this is California, I tip according to the service I got.it was just 2 of us and I don’t see why I am paying 18% tip

Went here because it was recommended by the tour guide people and it was decent but as tourist we expected a more authentic taste in the food. Definitely felt like food we could’ve just had at a buffet but for a way higher price. Don’t like to leave negative reviews but just want others to know what they are coming into if they are looking for a good Chinese restaurant in chinatown.

The restaurant Obama ate at years ago when he was president is still a solid dining experience a decade later. The Beijing duck wasn’t that great but the pan fried pork buns were legit. If you’re confused and don’t speak mandarin, the bathroom is downstairs under the staircase.

Food was good. Poor service, very untimely waiters, staff did not seem too interested in customer. Need better; payment system, staff training, customer service, and cleanliness. If you can find a better place to eat in Chinatown would recommend it. Call ahead to another place for reservation. Just because Obama got take out here does not mean that they have good food or service.

Food is fairly decent but service was mediocre at best. Food took sometime to come out even though they weren’t busy at all on this Sunday night at 9pm. They also took forever to bring back our credit card. Beef chow hor fun tasted good but it had bell peppers and some small green pepper which are unusual and not expected normally in this dish.

My husband and I are big dim sum lovers. This love affair started back in 2008 when we used to have dim sums every Sunday in Boston :).We have just moved to the West coast and were really keen on trying the dim sum scene here as well but we noticed most places offer dim sum to go which is not appealing to us, given that we have a full on romance with dim sum served fresh and hot and you can eat as you order in the restaurant. I came across the Great Eastern place from yelp - it had a lot of reviews but not so highly rated which made us hesitate for a bit. Ultimately, we gave this place a try and Im so glad we did. This place is pretty authentic. They only serve dim sum until 3pm and there is always a line to be seated. Reservations dont count really ;). I found the service to be pretty fast and everyone was very friendly and welcoming.We truly had a feast and loved all items. We tried the Prawn cilantro steamed Dumpling, steamed pork bun, string beans with xo sauce (which was nice and tasty but too expensive for this item), Prawn Chung fun, Shanghai dumpling, sticky rice lotus leaf and closing strong with steamed custard bun. Its been hard getting the steamed custard bun around and this place had it and I was so happy it was exactly how I remembered it from our Boston adventures. Delicious, soft and without the egg-y smell - YUM! We will be back soon!!! This place is really underrated!!!

Enjoyed the green tea on the table but that was pretty much it. Sweet and sour chicken was wet and bland. Noodles were rubbery, and all the food was barely above room temperature. Service charge is added on as standard, despite the fact that service was not good. Would not recommend!

The house daily soup was excellent. Good broth and fixings. Ung choy was nicely cooked with fermented bean curd. Tofu with mushrooms and mustard greens was delicious.Definitely come back here again.

Did not know there was a mandatory tip, and gave fifteen extra dollars intended as tip. They returned only five dollars, hoping that we wouldn’t notice. They basically tried to steal our money right under our noses. I applaud their audacity, but doesn’t make for good restaurant practice. Would not come again.

Located in Chinatown this restaurant is one of my favorite places to eat. The quality and taste of each dish is always on point. This is a large restaurant with two floors to serve guests. The staff is very attentive and speak English well. Their menu is on the pricey side of the table though but worth of an occasional visit.

So we found ourselves in Chinatown dress shopping on a Saturday afternoon, and we asked the clerk where she likes to eat. She recommended this place, where apparently President Obama once visited. There was a festival going on nearby, so the streets were extra crowded. The place was packed! We didnt wait long, service was good. The fried rice excellent. Steamed pork buns, yum! Chicken cilantro dumplings tasty. Beef short ribs took longer, so we were already too fill to eat them. We can definitely eat them at home. We definitely would come back

Food was good, especially compared to the Chinese food I’m used to in Sonoma county. Especially the sweet and sour pork as it was not dry on the inside like some other places. The rest of the food was good (Mongolian beef, cashew chicken, veggie chow mein, pork potstickers, and fried shrimp rolls) and so was the service. Restaurant atmosphere is nice and spacious, and not too loud or quiet. I went at 4:30 on a Saturday.

The pictures of President Obama, visiting this restaurant, first caught my eye. I thought if it was good enough for the former president, it must be really good food.I visited the restaurant with my four grandkids, the food was tasty. As you look around, it’s not as clean, but the food makes up for it. However, when I got the bill, I was charged for items I did not receive and an 18% tip. I probably will not visit this restaurant again I’m pretty picky when it comes to eating in a clean place. I was really turned off by the entire basement level smelling of sewer.

The food was really great! We were told it was the oldest traditional restaurant in Chinatown. With over 200 truly authentic items to choose from it can be daunting, but well worth it once you make up your mind. The Spicy Thai style Catfish was the bomb! The only slight downside is the wait time - having a reservation didnt really help as they appeared to seat by party size (i.e. if a 6 top opened up then a party of six was seated no matter when they arrived or what time your reservations were scheduled). Luckily the food more than made up for the wait time.

I had read great reviews on this place. I would never recommend this place to anyone that is not of Chinese. We were treated terribly, they told us the restroom was on the street even though they clearly had one inside but had to use a key to use their restroom and since we were not one of them we couldn’t use it. We also were not waited on like everyone else was. When we paid the waiter threw our money on the table telling us we didn’t leave enough tip. What he didn’t understand was we weren’t going to tip him the full amount due to the terrible customer service to Caucasian people. They sure didn’t mind taking American money and living in America! I’m pretty sure that entire area enjoys the money they make off of tourism. Extremely RUDE!

We googled restaurants in Chinatown and eventually settled on one with 4.3 google rating. When we arrived, it was empty, a bad sign, so we decided not to go in.The restaurant next door to this one was packed, and we could not get a table. We decided to give this one a go. It was not empty and had some Chinese customers, which is often a good sign, at least of authenticity.The service was efficient and courteous. Tea was offered immediately, which was nice. We ordered pot stickers, sesame chicken (childhood favourite), garlic bok choi, and rice.The chicken, rice, and vegetables were tasty. The potstickers were awful, both in flavour and execution. This was going to be a 3-star review and never get written. I will only review things a really liked or hated, unfortunately for me this meal gave me severe intestinal difficulties later that evning and so the 1 star review.

Found this place on Google and Yelp. Reviews were good. Picked a few goodies off the menu and were pleasantly surprised by all of them. They do give you the tea like water, but dont tell you that they change you for it. (It is on the menu) Overall it was a fun experience.

The place was crowded when we arrived, so we were given a ticket with a number and waited about 10 mins for our number to be called. Once we got a table we ordered a few random dim sums and maybe we havent been lucky with what we picked... but we didnt really love any of them. Came back here for the second time during rush hour. It is a big restaurant (two floors), we waited a bit longer for shrimp dumplings, whereas the rest already came. I have tried a lot of different things, the food in this place was never a disappointment. Price is also reasonable.

This is an extremely good dim sum experience. We had made plans to done next door, but saw that this looked WAY better. The menu is broad and has all the traditional favorites youd expect from a dim sum place. Prices are very reasonable, and everything we got was tasty. There IS a language barrier for English-only speakers, and they seem really under-staffed right now. Patience may be necessary. We had a very nice time and immersed ourselves in the most authentic dim sum experience weve had, and weve tried many. Sorry I dont have more food pictures, but it was definitely all good!

Authentic dim sum in San Franciscos Chinatown! The upstairs dining room shown in my photo is very formal. They do have a downstairs dining room that is a lot more casual. Both spaces are staffed by gentleman waiters in green cutaway jackets. Complete your order on the menu provided and they will start bringing it to you as it comes out of the steamer. Super fresh and delicious! My favorite was the deep fried bean curd skin rolls with shrimp. I used to have fond memories this place, clean and good food. Sadly this is no longer the case. The dim sum is very much a miss, the Siu Mai is bland, misshapen, the Xiao long bao had little to no soup inside.The seafood pan fried noodles we noticed that the mushrooms had gone bad due to the taste. After telling the staff, we got another order to replace the dish, but only to get the same dish back, with the same noodles.The upstairs dining area appears well maintained staff, which is a stark contrast compared to the downstairs area, which is far less appealing to dine in due to the odd smell. Maybe its just the lower level thats this bad, regardless, this experience had left a sour note on my opinion of this restaurant.

Sticky rice was dry because it lacked the usual amount of sauce that comes with savory sticky rice. Shrimp was not entirely deshelled - most of it was, but we found shrimp tail shells and a shard from a crab or some other shellfish in there as well. The squid was well cooked, perfectly tender. Soup dumplings were mostly filling, and just a dribble of soup, the entire dumpling about the size of a coffee capsule. Noodles were a lovely texture and color. Vegetables were overall well done. But everything was over salted. Definitely not a low-sodium meal. Even I like salty food, but this was a little too much. Chrysanthemum tea offered to us was so watered down to the point that it didnt taste like freshly brewed chrysanthemum. It should have tasted like a stronger version of chamomile. Nothing positively stood out except for the squid. They gave us orange slices to refresh our palates after the meal. Nice touch.Overpriced. Over salted. Overall disappointed. Would not recommend. Could do everything better.

Dim Sum here was enjoyable but inconsistent. The pork was good and chicken feet adequately flavored. Beef tripe, not so much. Im sure a portion of their menu is okay for a lunch but the few disappointing items ruin the experience. Staff was not difficult, but gave off a negative vibe.

This place is like traveling through time. My friends family has been coming here for 70 years and they have the best Chinese food at great prices.Fried octopus, garlic shrimp, Peking duck and the tea.Don’t expect to have 5 star service, go and order a ton of food and feast.

One of the better dim sum places in Chinatown San Francisco. All their menu items are freshly made to order. Although you do not get the traditional experience of seeing the food as they circle the dining room in other restaurants the food is always hot when it reaches your table here. If this will your first time having dim sum you should order about 2-3 dishes per person. They are small plates like tapas.

The experience was horrible. They have no courtesy towards blacks. I saw the waiter treat the white customer with patience and respect but was always in a hurry when I had questions. I cancelled my order and left.

Great restaurant, great customer service and great food! We stumbled into this restaurant as we didn’t want to wait in the queue next door and are VERY happy we did. The food was fresh, clean, and the atmosphere was family friendly. We enjoyed eating every dish we ordered (Dumplings, beef dishes and veggies). After going to the much hyped restaurant next door the next night, I honestly think Great Eastern Restaurant is much better with food, price and customer service. Definitely recommend!

Its good dim sum always consistently served hot but not the best and not the best selection but at least its fresh and there are some stand out dishes that can compare to some of the best places such as their egg yolk or lava bun, tripe, and honey glazed BBQ pork. Their Hoya and layered cake sounded amazing but really nothing special(I thought it would have egg yolk layering but its only the egg custard with coconut). The black sesame mochi balls were not that great-too much of the mochi and not enough sesame plus the sesame was so watery. Ive had better steamed bean curd rolls in terms of flavor but literally these came out burning hot as everything really was made to order freshly steamed which is a major plus considering not all dim sum places do this. Everyone there was Chinese speaking Cantonese, good hang out place for what English people may call afternoon tea or Spanish people will call tapas.

My husband and I opted for the family dinner option B which was $38.50 per person and we were billed $130. The bill was handwritten, hardly legible but for the most part I could decipher the two $38.50 charges, plus a tip of $19.99 and a few other illegible items totaling up to $130. I asked the waiter to explain the bill to me and he snatched it from my hand and came back a few minutes later with the correct bill. Initially I thought they accidentally gave us someone elses bill but such was not the case because our items appeared on the bill legibly and the fake charges were sloppily written. Kind of wild how well this place is rated for how mid the everything about it was. Portions arent large or small, but for what you pay I feel like it isnt worth it. Once we heard former President Obama paid a visit here, we knew we had to try Great Eastern out. We ordered the diced chicken fried rice and one of the noodle dishes as they were not serving dim sum at the time, and were impressed with how delicious the food was, even after having to reheat it since it was takeout. We didnt even need to use any extra sauces in our dishes! The prices were great as well, so much that we returned the next day to get more food. The restaurant itself was nicely decorated and was pretty busy and lively when we stopped in, so would expect waits. Also, parking is a bit tricky in the area, so be weary of that as well.

We started with the steamed sticky rice wrapped in a Lotus leaf, it was delicious. We then had pot stickers and dim sum, steamed meatballs and spareribs. Every thing but fantastic but my favorite was the barbecued sparerib dim sum. One of our party was unfamiliar with chopsticks but determined to try. When our server saw the trouble she was having he quietly placed a fork on the table without being asked and he didnt say a word, as to not embarrass her. They do add those to your bill by the way. The plate with mussels had a bunch of empty shells. The veggie fried rice was the equivalent of Panda Express (bland with barely any veggies). My husband did enjoy the rib plate. He says its the average downtown San Francisco Chinese Restaurant. I would not return. PLENTY of other places to choose from.There are a lot of Chinese people here so maybe the food is authentic but I think the staff can use a lesson in friendliness and courtesy.

Let’s get to the point: If you are not Chinese, speak Chinese, or a local Chinese, do not expect good service. They were extremely rude, the language barrier was a problem (what happened to if you live in America you must learn English? I guess it does not apply to this restaurant) nonetheless the menu is confusing and prices are not detailed correctly. Be prepared for the compulsory tip. Extremely overpriced for salty food and horrible service. Enter at your own risk.

We were sent to this restaurant by the jeweller we had met earlier in the day.It was about 2pm hence the restaurant wasnt busy and we were seated right away. The waiter was polite but not a bit attentive. We ordered the crab with Ginger and scallions as well ad shrimp fried rice. The crab was very flavorful and tasty but I wont recommend it just simply because it was very messy. The rice was as good as youd expect from a good Chinese restaurant.The menu is way too long. The restrooms were very nasty and the carpet going down to the restrooms were beyond nasty and repulsive.Im certain that I will not go back.

Very decent and authentic Chinese restaurant. The food is very flavorful. Only issue that people may have is if they feel compelled to order more than they can eat because of the pressure of the servers, but dont let that stop you. Just order what you know you can eat, itll be fine. The service here is relatively quick once the food is ordered but flagging someone down to take your order or getting the check may take some time.

We had 3 plates of literally just veggies with garlic and one seafood plate for dinner. Besides that 2 glasses of wine. When the bill came we were shocked, we spend way over 100 dollars!!! For some vegetables??? Seriously?? Also, the tip is Alfred’s included in the final bill, so you don’t even have the choice to decide how much. Service is not good as well. Im Chinese and I feel the food was pretty good. We were looking for a Chinese restaurant opened at 4pm and we were fortunate to have found such a good place. We tried a variety of Cantonese dishes (beef, pork, fish, two vegetable dishes, etc). The restaurant setting was comfortable. It was good to know that others such as Obama and Yao Ming also ate as this restaurant as well. I would highly recommend it.

Great Eastern Restaurant gives a true chinatown dim sum experience. The food is very good and the service is efficient. That is to say that theres a constant busy hustle as the waitstaff works very fast. Ive been to Great Eastern a couple of times and each time Im happy I did. A couple of times I went with a friend that spoke Mandarin and he order off menu items that were delicious (my friend is convinced we were granted the items because he ordered them speaking Mandarin)! Both upstairs and downstairs are nice dining areas.

I found a few non-steamed items to eat lol. Roast Duck was tasty. Won ton soup with pork/shrimp dumplings was solid. Fried potstickers were large, like a pierogi. Egg custard soft, but not runny, no crispness to the shell. House tea was ok. If you like steamed, dim sum items, they have a wide selection. The seafood tanks were empty, sad to see...

If I could only give 0 stars. The waiter was oddly racist, Im white by the way so I guess Im not used to the feeling. He only brought us the menu and then the check when our meal was over, which lasted roughly 30 minutes. We ordered 8 dim sum dishes in our party. Two off which tasted exactly like vomit. When I did receive the check I tipped adequately for our party of four, considering the lack of service and rudeness, but I still offered something because I can understand the hectic nature of food service. Our waiter publicly asked me why the tip was so low. To answer him, you did three things, you brought us the menu, you were extremely rude, then you brought us the check. He then began to speak in what I would assume was Mandarin and my party and I left. This was by far the worst service I have ever endured and probably dont think Ill ever encounter again. Yes, Obama went here, but do you think his service is comparable to the every day consumer?

Dont get pulled into this over priced, poorly staffed tourist trap. When I dined here I was given a hard cold standard sized bowl of rice I didnt order. I assumed there would be some cost for the rice but $8.50?! And the rice was suspiciously not priced on the menu. The two dim-sum dishes were cold and the beef was incredibly fatty. Waiters will not talk to you either from rudeness or a language gap but then had the audacity to stop me and my girlfriend from leaving and tell us the tip is not included. The manager also glared at us as we left. First time I havent tipped ever. This place is a disaster. Stay away unless you like being confused about how to order, dishes randomly dropped on your table, and no communication from staff until they want your money.

Food here was great! They do advertise heavily that Obama went here to eat, when in reality he just got food to go. We ordered the beef chow mein, clams, and fried pepper shrimp which were all really good. The fried pepper shrimp could have been better though if they added more seasoning. Their complimentary jasmine tea is also quite nice.

The worst place to eat. We walked in at 10am and wanted to order dinner entrees but they ONLY serve dim sum 10-3pm. It was our first time getting dim sum so we started with 4 orders of dim sums. One of the server brings out a chicken feet and told them that we did not order chicken feet and they started speaking in Chinese and I could tell that they weren’t happy(he said something in Chinese and made me really upset). After this scene, we waited 20 minutes for a shrimp dumpling and at 10:50, they told us that they didn’t have shrimp dumpling. WOW. It seemed like they didn’t want us here and I felt like we weren’t welcomed. But what can you expect from a chinese restaurant. First, they need to learn English in order to serve customers. The total was $22.40 and I paid in cash with no Tips. It was my first time not tipping at a restaurant even if the service was bad. The server stopped me after seeing that there was no tip and told us that we need to tip. No thank you. You guys don’t even deserve a penny. If you are planning to visit this restaurant, do not take your parents. The worst experience in my life.

Whenever my family and I travel, we judge the restaurant based on how full it is before we enter. The restaurant was packed and we decided it was worth a 5-10 minute wait. Overall, the service was moderate at best. The food was mediocre. Coming from someone who has eaten asian food all his life, I recommend finding a better place. Also the price is kind of expensive for the lack of flavor in the food. The seafood is all market price.

Im only reviewing my lunch and dinner experiences here, not the dim sum. Ive been here several times. First time was for a group dinner with 12 other people. My friend pre-ordered all the food for the group. We have fresh shrimp, which was the tastiest shrimp Ive ever had. There were other things like noodle, chicken and beef dishes.Other times Ive been here was for a late afternoon lunch on the weekend. The place was still pretty busy, but we didnt have to wait for a table. The food here goes more toward Hong Kong style cooking and many of the dishes you wont find in an Americanize Chinese restaurant.

My family had the dim sum for lunch during the week. Pricey at nearly $5 per ordered dim sum dish, when compared to prices in SoCal. But we figured wed have to eat in Chinatown at least once while visiting SF.What was good: Turnip cake, soy sauce chicken (tender), fried shrimp dumplings.Not good: Combo fried rice (really greasy), chicken feet (tastes better in SoCal).Ambience of restaurant is nice, we ate downstairs, and bathrooms clean. But they would not validate our parking even though we spent $60 on our meal. Waiter said they validate if you spend $80. Whatever.Plus, I would have given higher marks if I did not have GI issues later in the afternoon. Granted my stomach is more sensitive than my wife and son, but good tasting food should also be clean. Maybe too much grease from the fried rice?

Poor service. Mediocre food. Ordered 4 dishes for my girlfriend and I. First dish was completed with the second and third almost gone when the server informed us they are out of chow fun. We made the switch to chow mein and waited close to 15 minutes after we completed our third dish to get the chow mein. No apologies offered or discounts for our waiting. Very little communication from servers regarding drinks or questions about the menu. To finish it off we waited a what felt like forever to get our bill.
