Needed a quick breakfast before jumping on a plane to go back home. Found this gem on Google and decided to try it. It was delicious! Staff was so friendly. Restaurant was clean and the food was some of the best we had during our vacation. We will definitely be back next time we come to visit California.

We’ve been searching for a low-key solid Mexican restaurant for since our go-to spot closed last year. Happy to say we finally found it—Great Mex is perfect! We’ve been here about 8 times now and each time is a good experience. The food is flavorful and the portions are plentiful, and the prices are appropriate. The staff are wonderful. The restaurant itself is spotless. There’s limited indoor dining but plenty of room out in the covered patio area. Small parking lot but plenty of easy street parking.

Tacos. All sorts of tacos. The carnitas Mexican taco is a top favorite of mine, its like a street taco. Also their crispy shredded beef is delicious. My mom loves the fish tacos, grilled and fried. Both are great.I also tried their taco salad, with carne asada. That was great too!Lastly, their breakfast burritos are so so good!! And you need to try their roasted salsa. Soooo good!!

This place is just right for me. They pass the test handily on chile verde, frijoles, tortilla chips, salsa, all the must-get-it-rights. Prices are reasonable, theres outside seating protected from the elements, but breezy, there is A/C inside, draft-amazing-beer. It checks all the boxes I can think of.

This is a great place for a quick bite. Close to the pyramid and the University, it’s easy to meet people here before or after an event. Here is a useful tip you can find parking along afternoon most days of the week might have to walk a half block but it’s much easier than their parking lot. The food is good there’s a good variety and it comes up fast and it’s very affordable

Ok there’s many reasons why I’m giving this place a 3 starFirst off I’m vegan and for the longest time this place did not cater to that kind of diet even thought I would try to get things that were plant based like grilled mushrooms and onions, many time I would find small bits of meat in those orders and it was repulsing even though I would clarify that I do not eat meat…sighSecond off they charge way too much for their food, it’s good food but it’s not the best Mexican food I or my fiancé have had and he does eat meat so he’s eaten more things to reflect an opinion like that but they charge like they are high class restaurant when it’s just a small spot for Mexican food almost like a hole in the wall..Thirdly most of the workers here are pretty rude, the cooks and manager are the only decent workers with an exception of 1 or 2 waiters here the rest of the staff are very unsocial, can’t hold conversations, and can’t get orders right, I’ve had workers take my order down over the phone and screw it up so many handful of times that I stopped ordering out from here and won’t be back.I would give this place lower ratings if it wasn’t for the manger, she’s a sweet lady that does the best that she can, so I would still recommend people to go here if you have no dietary restrictions but if your vegan don’t even bother because honestly the only vegan item here are the tamales and they’re ok anything else on the menu i would not risk if you are vegan!

Charging $3.75 for 15 cinnamon chips is a rip off. They used to have a perfect portion to price ratio. Now they give you an 8th of the bag filled for that price. It was so little that I had to count. 15 chips. 15! Come on… These were my favorite; however, now I feel ripped off buying these. If it wasn’t for Covid I would have asked to return it and get my money back. If I would have seen the quantity inside I wouldn’t even had bothered buying it. Disappointed since these are my cheat meal for the week. Smh

Really liked the food here, on par with the other couple really good Mexican restaurants in Long beach. They have daily specials which are very fairly priced. Really enjoyed the torta which was big enough to make two meals out of. Nice neighborhood vibe as well. Will definitely be going back to Great Mex. Oh let me not forget the customer service was great.

First time here Tuesday taco for $1.50 is a great price. But didnt get my receipt until I asked for it. Al pastor meet was cold. Parking was an issue. They dont have lettuce due to the recall in the romaine lettuce NOT the iceberg lettuce. And the recall has been clear now. Salsa was great.

Came here for the first time as I was craving tacos. They have a Tuesday and Friday special with Mexican tacos at $1.50. They were really good. The seating area is a bit small and parking is available at the lot next to the restaurant. I ordered carne asada, carnitas and al pastor tacos.

This is what you would consider western mexican food. I cant say its bad but these are a dime a dozen. This place is clean and the food is good, exacly what you ask for. If you plan on filling up on chips before you eat, this is definetly the place because thats exacly what i did. I got my moneys worth and mabe they took a loss on the amount of chips i ate but anyways this place is overall pretty good.

Kinda disappointed in this place. I ordered a Carne asada burrito with light on the rice and when I received the burrito it was full of rice and barely no asada and the worst thing is they didnt even wrap it well. Great Mex was a major letdown. I was hoping for some delicious Mexican food, but what I got was far from it. The taco shells were stale and lacked the crunch that makes tacos so satisfying. And the meat? Flavorless. Just not good.The restaurant itself felt like a cheesy imitation of a family-owned hole in the wall joint. And the flautas didnt deliver either.All in all, I wouldnt recommend Great Mex to anyone looking for authentic and tasty Mexican food. The food and atmosphere just didnt measure up, and I was left feeling pretty disappointed.

Terrible service on 12/24/21. Arrived at 5:05-5:10 PM well within the POSTED closing time of 6:00 PM and were refused service. Employee stated that No, we always close at 5:00 despite what the sign in the window states. After 10 plus years patronage this is how we were treated.Wish there was a zero rating for this type of disservice.

Expensive but not worth the prices, taco tuesday gives you cheap prices on tacos and beer. Meals tasted like preseasoned, store bought entrees, meats, gravies and sauces. Beans and rice tasted old like they made a weeks worth and kept serving until all gone. 2 stars instead of one because staff was friendly and tried to improve our food. They do serve breakfast but we were hungry for real Mexican food. That was hopeless. Only one bathroom that needed cleaning.

This is our go-to every Taco Tuesday! The best tacos around is at Great Mex! They have a huge food menu, with lots of great dishes to choose from. They even serve beer. There is a large outdoor tent eating area on one side of the restaurant, and seating on the front and other side, as well. Service is quick and friendly, food is Fantastic!! They serve beer but its not at the expense of the food like other MX restaurants nearby. It may not be as scenic other places but thats not why I go here. The app is also helpful if you come often.

I had forgotten how great my burritos were the last time I was there, a few years ago. I ordered a mushroom, onion and shrimp quesadilla. Tasted like something you would make a home. A bit of a surprise. Also a small carnitas tostada. It was just carnitas, shredded lettuce and cheese. The meat was seasoned well.I will be back soon to taste enchiladas, tacos and other items.The young guys at the counter were friendly and helpful. That makes all the difference.

Good quality food! I love this place partly because its close to my house and they have a little patio I can sit with my dog. Theyre very nice and the food is excellent. They have a lot of options, including very healthy conscious food and vegetarian options. I just tried their breakfast sausage burrito and OMG it was good- really well seasoned. Good cup of coffee too. You should at least give this place a try... I suspect once you do, youll be coming back.

I love it here. If you want nachos I recommend this place. Its worth the price. Nachos are big enough to feed two or three people. Love the staff. Its nice to see the familiar faces of the two servers there. They work really hard and are extremely friendly and helpful. Wonderful people. Nice restaurant environment and clean. They do have tvs on the inside which I appreciate it fills in the awkward silence if your eating with another person. You can also get their food to go if you dont want to dine in which is a nice perk. Highly recommend!

This was my first time ordering from this restaurant. It has been here for a long time, but this was my first and it will be my last. The food was some of the worst Ive ever had. I enjoy eating at Taco Bell more than I did here. The prices are ridiculous! I dont know if this has anything to do with impact to business due to the COVID-19 pandemic or not. They had signs post near the cash registers indicating they recently had to increase their prices for some unknown reason, and that the prices listed on the menu boards were not accurate. However, the actual prices were not displayed. You can only guess the shock after my buddy and I ordered a couple burritos, two tacos, flautas, and a couple drinks, and the total bill was $40! The order was to go, of course, and neither of us finished eating any of it. We ended up throwing it in the trash. Im willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and chalk this up to the current environment that all businesses are going through, and the fact that theyve been at this location for quite some time. they must be doing something right to be there for as long as they have, but they certainly did not prove it on the day that I was there.

Food was not what i expected lacked a lot of flavor and well the restroom the soap in the dispenser was watered down and near the the juice machine were a lot of bugs . when i got my food the forced the torta to be tightly wrapped and made it soggy on one end, fries were not crispy but either soggy or burned only a couple of good ones also ketchup was on expired looking side,and churro had to much sugar and cinnamon a little goes a long way and also was way over cooked or fried in this case . All in all would not recommended unless you really got no other mexican food places near you.

Love this place! There are a bunch of small mexican places around, but this one is definitely one of the best. My girlfriend and I order take out at least once a week, if not more. I love their burritos and taco salad. All of the food is good and fresh. I highly recommend this place if you are new to the area. Also, they have a Burrito Card where you buy 7 burritos, the 8th is free. Love this deal!

Love this place so much. Sloppy Joses are $1 and amazing. Their soft tacos de asada are also great. If you have yet to try their tortas i highly recommend you try their carnitas torta with fries! Note this review is based on a first impression order through DoorDash.I ordered a 3 item combo containing 2 beef flautas and 2 chicken enchiladas with rice and beans as sides, a part of the combo. I also ordered a small horchata and a flan. The flautas or should I say flauta was simply 1 full sized flauta cut in half to become 2 pieces. Really?! The enchiladas were alright. Normal enchiladas. The rice and beans were super skimpy on the amount. Other restaurants I’ve been to usually dump rice and beans on your plate, to go or not. Beans were really cold as if they were sitting out for a while. I never got my flan. The gave me a small side of rice and beans instead which does not equal the cost of the flan. Got some chips and salsas too. Pretty disappointed to be honest. Even with the DoorDash refund for the flan I could have gotten twice as much food that might taste better from chipotle (two burrito bowls).

I like eating here because its super close to CSULB. This place will get super packed on taco tuesday which is a decent special. I believe its $1.25 per taco, which really isnt a special to me since thats what i normally pay. The salsas are good here but limes tend to be a bit old. Staff is nice, but its a very small location and so it gets crowded quickly. This place is very popular at CSULB expect to see students and staff here.

For such a small, out-of-the-way place, the food here is surprisingly good. I like the tacos, and Ive had them several times. The chili relleno may be my current favorite in the Long Beach area, and maybe even in all of California. They are very similar to the chili rellenos served at the El Castillo Real restaurant 30 years ago, a restaurant that is still missed by long time residents here in Long Beach.

I rode my bike and parked outside. I ordered a $9 veggie quesdilla. I asked to wash my hands and was shown the bathroom. Some guy stepped in front of me into there and took a few minutes to get out. I did not bother the door. I washed then ate. I needed to use the toilet. I went in and sat down. No one left eating in the restaurant but someone trying to get into the bathroom. Delicious tacos here for good prices. They have both taco Tuesday and taco Friday, which is awesome.Only downside is how small the space is. It can get pretty crowded around lunch time.
