Exactly what I was craving; the first bite made me so happy! Gooey, cheesy Mexican food. I got an al pastor chimichanga, enchilada style with red sauce; highly recommend. Also their horchata and jamaica juice was great as well.

I got to love me some Great Mex. Ive been to a couple of their locations. One down in Balboa on a peninsula is always a great spot for breakfast and now that Ive moved inland a little bit, Im able to go to the one off of Mesa Verde. Still same flavor. I love The machaka beef burrito in the morning still is the best around. They have awesome deals. Great specials, good quality meat. Fresh food. Cant beat it. Signed up to their rewards points program and get some killer deals with that as well. Really enjoyed it my time at Great Mex. Looking forward to my next visit

Order huevos rancheros the eggs were perfect the rice was very good the beans were terrible theyre almost cold not even the warm.the shrimp cocktail was very good except they forgot to put it on a plate to hold the cup so you had to set your crackers on the table. had ask server for plate to set cocktail glass on.

I love this place. The food is absolutely delicious. They make very good margaritas. Newly remodeled and redecorated, including the bathroom 🤩. And they have happy hour every day. You can’t beat that. IT’s a little hidden gem.

Been coming here for lunch pretty regularly for almost seven years. It’s always delicious and the staff are friendly. The shaded patio is a lovely place to eat and relax on our plentiful sunny days.My go-to for family style Mexican food, and I bring clients and family when I can. Great Mex indeed!

First off I am a regular Great Mex customer and have always loved it. This particular location however is awful. Service is slow, tortillas have always been dry and meat overcooked. Service is slow and the salsa is not good. Id recommend skipping this location all together. The location located off Wilson drive is way better.

Menu can be confusing. Apparently if you get crunchy tacos, you dont automatically get cilantro or onions. Who knew?! 🙄Salsa is really mild or too spicy. Im looking for flavor. So I mixed them. Was ok.Counter guy was super friendly and tried to be helpful.Ill go again. Be more specific in my ordering. Oh! Carnitas super moist 😁

Food pretty good, affordable and usually great service...Went there this past Saturday and waited an extra 20 minutes for my torta. I ordered over the phone and was told that it would be 10 minutes. I was almost late to work. Torta was good tho.Just tried to go to Great Mex once again and figured Saturday was an off day for the staff. I walked in and the cashier, who saw me and mind you the place was empty at the time, decided to go wipe down patio tables instead. The two cooks in the back made eye contact and carried on with whatever they were doing. Waited a bit and no one bothered to acknowledge me. I did not feel like possibly waiting another half hour as I did on Saturday.I really want to continue to like and patronize Great Mex but meh... sorry GM.Took this visit as a sign to check out Taco Madre around the corner.Changed review to 2 stars from 5.

The quality of this place has gone down. We stick it out because we live close and my youngest loved one particular item on the menu but 9 times out of 10, he doesn’t even want to eat that anymore. Depending on who’s working the prices are different (it is NOT because of happy hour prices either) mThey constantly screw up our order or leave things out. There is no point in arguing with them about it either because they don’t believe in taking care of their customers. I HATE going during the day here, the guy who works at night is my favorite and the easiest to deal with. And the whole “our meat prices are being raised so it’s only fair that we share that price with you”, is tacky.

Food is good. Service is horrible! Tonight was the second night that they missed a call in order from me, and not to mention they are always short staffed on Taco Tuesday which is the worst business move in my opinion. Then after waiting 30 minutes for my food they threw 3 different type of tacos in one to go box (which is lazy in my option because they always separate the different tacos) Going to Hole Mole around the corner next Tuesday and every Tuesday, bye great mex! ✌️

Was in California for the weekend- visited this location on Harbor Dr. Googled Mexican food and selected this place. Was welcomed nicely by the host who also helped me decide on a dish. I paid and first my friend then I went to the restroom and it smelled awful! It was clean looking but it smelled to the hills like piss! As if the walls were smothered with undiluted piss!The food was good enough but I wish I had gone to bathroom first! Yuck yuck

Poor food.poor communication factors.2 chicken tacos: i had to explain meat only three times.... the burnt meat i discarded. the unburnt meat was utterly flavorless.black beans: way too hot to eat. 20 minutes later, theyre also flavorless.because the beans were corrupted with juicy allergens piled on top, i paid 30% more to re-order them without such surprise additions. when i did so, i changed seats.do i get to eat tacos while the beans cool for 20 minutes? well...sort of:who is the person interviewing me while i eat? an employee? or a relative of an employee? i dont care to explain why i changed seats instead of getting to enjoy a meal i just paid 130% for. i dont care to explain to you whether my seat change was because of air temperature or not. who are you? my seat change cant conflict with any other customer here, because there is none.the chef was sitting a couple tables away: while he was eating & watching me eat, he was talking about there being pee on the restroom floor. he described it twice. true story. sorry but thats less-than-professional in my book. (props to the other review on here calling out the gross restroom floor.)

Only thing this place is good for is a beer on the patio. If youre planning to eat, go to the location off Newport BLVD on the east side. Food quality is FAR better, salsas are better, and the employees are friendlier.

I bought a two taco chicken combo, rice & beans to go. It sucked.I placed my order & went to another store to get something. I came back and asked the same guy who took my order what kind of chicken they offer, he told me that they offer grilled chicken, shredded, and another type. I told him that the shredded chicken sounded good. I asked him what kind of chicken Ill get and he said the grilled cubed chicken. I asked him why he didnt ask me what kind of chicken I wanted, he didnt know and said sorry.At that time, the cook came out with my order, the guy who took my order gave me my order and didnt offer to change my order since I told him I prefer the shredded chicken. He should have asked me when I placed my order what kind of chicken Id like.The tacos tasted horrible, and the serving of rice and beans was so small it was ridiculous.Im not sure what the rest of the food tastes like, Ill never know, I wont go back.Bad service and bad food doesnt get my business.I

This Great Mex in Costa Mesa is located in a small strip-mall off Harbor Blvd and East Mesa Verde. Nothing special here, but good Mexican food at good prices. Their little patio section extending from the front of the shop into 3 or so parking stalls is my favorite place to eat their 2 shredded beef taco combo, my favorite. Friendly service people.

Service was lax at best. Food was cold, inedibly so, after 2-3 minutes to get home.... The place was empty (it was a Monday but that shouldnt matter at a good resuraunt) and I ordered my al pastor burrito wet. I recieved a carnitas burrito...beforehand I asked if the enchilada sauce is canned, supposedly its not (according to the guy watching the game at the bar that seemed to be the only server) but for 69 cents I could have the same stuff out of the yellow and red can everyone knows about from the local mart or grocery store (and had extra to boot) to drench my food in, but thankfully they only put about 1/2 cup on top (I never thought Id be happy a resuraunt was stingy) None of the salsa is catigorized at the salsa bar. God forbid the employees get off their ass and put salsa in a cup. Thank God I know what different general salsas look like avoid the black salsa, (its horrible). Over all, poor service, high prices, garbage food. Im unimpressed, and the salsa sucks. Skip the bagged chips and the half assed salsa, you are better off going to taco bell. Im just waiting to be sick from the little bit I ate. I guess ill just have a pizza delivered. I wouldnt damn anyone to eat here. I regret it immensely.

I was here about a year ago & it was good, but not remarkable. Yesterday I tried their carnitas burrito & it was fantastic. Maybe the best carnitas Ive ever had... surprising to me for some little place in a strip mall. I will definitely come back often.

Horrible customer service, especially while ordering over the phone. I have never used Uber Eats before and when I added in the comments to add extra things I received a phone call right away from the restaurant. The woman who was on the phone with me was extremely rude and constantly hung up. I had to call 3-4 times before having her ask a manager for assistance.
