One of the hidden gem in SF that served authentic Chinese Vietnamese style noodles especially egg noodles. Their pickle was really good too. One of my friend recommended this place to me. The restaurant was small and decent with a lot of Chinese customers, that how you know it’s authentic. We went weekday for lunch and there was always a line

Fabulous food, the braised duck leg egg noodles soup was delicious. My husband who’s generally not a soup lover told me he could have eaten at this place once a week :). If you’re a tourist keep in mind that this place is not in a nice neighborhood, be aware of the surroundings.

Ive been here several times and they are extremely consistent in taste and portion size. Prices are reasonable for the portions you get and the service is always very efficient and friendly. Sure its messy in the TL, but the restaurant is a homey spot with lots of customers and comfortable on the inside.Things Ive ordered:House special ho fun (soup and dry) - this is the must order here in my opinion, it is full of toppings over the noodles (shrimp, char siew, pork slices, ground pork, chicken strips, fish cakes, beef balls, bean sprouts, pork liver if you want it). Ive only gotten the rice noodle version and like it dry with soup on the side. It is well seasoned on its own but you can jazz it up with pickled jalapenos and other sauces that they provide on the table. The fried garlic oil they put in it is delicious and Ive never regretted ordering this.Golden fried fish cakes - about 3 whole fishcakes in each order, cut into half and fried to golden perfection. They are a little greasy but tasty with a nice bounce, they taste great dipped in the hoisin sauce. Served with pickled vegetables on the side (cucumber and carrot) which cuts through the grease perfectly.Wonton soup - the wontons are just ok, theres no shrimp in it that I could discern and is mostly just wrapper and ground pork. Its seasoned well and comes in the same soup that they serve with the house special noodles.Beef stew ho fun - this was more soupy than stewy in my opinion, with a strong tomato flavor. The beef was alright and pretty chewy and tough, it would have been nice if they had stewed the meat a little longer to get it nice and soft. The rice noodles dont come with anything else except beef and bean sprouts. Its an ok option but I would opt for the house noodles over this anytime.The crowds here seem inconsistent, I had to wait once for over 20 mins for a table and it was packed to the gills, and other times I got a table right away and there were a decent number of customers but no wait. The tables turn over quickly though since people are here to eat, not sit around for hours.

The food is pretty good. Tried the Nam Vang dry noodles. You will need to make your own sauce though, I was expecting a restaurant-made sauce for the dry noodles (as the sauce is like the soul of the dish) but there was not.Overall experience here was okay. The staff was nice and friendly. Recommend to go here by your own car/ taxi/ uber… the neighborhood was a bit run down so it might be scary for tourists.

Great place to get an egg noodle soup. The clear soup is packed with flavor. The duck leg is tender, fell of the bones while still intact. The wonton and the egg noodle are clearly fresh and homemade. I love the Vietnamese style touch of pickle vegetables and various sauces and chili pastes. Definitely a place to find a comforting and filling, yet not greasy or heavy, noodle soup!

This restaurant is your “hole in the wall” when it comes to noodles! I’ve been ordering the same thing for the past 20 years, the braised Duck Leg with Egg Noodles and it’s phenomenal! What’s better is the consistency of the quality through the decades.The restaurant is non-descript by every measure of the word and not remotely fancy, so don’t expect much when it comes to “ambiance”; the food is the highlight!Service is quick and efficient!

It was a pleasant surprise indeed to find mee pok dry noodles in San Francisco city that made me feel closer to home in Singapore. The lady in charge told me they were Teochew from Vietnam. The restaurant was just 10min walk from Hilton at union square.I had the house special dry noodles, but I have every reason to believe that the noodles soup would be equally good if not better, because the broth was really good. I’ve never had a bowl of noodles with so many ingredients in it - char Siew, pig kidney, minced pork, pork slices, 3 prawns, 4-5 wontons, fish balls and fish cake. I figured out later that thick noodles means mee-pok and thin noodles means mee gia back home.The egg noodles was nicely cooked, for ramen lovers who would prefer firmer texture. It was lightly yet nicely seasoned which avoided overpowering the rest of the dish. One highlight for me was the pig kidney, it was very tender yet well cooked. Love the minced pork/pork slices and the prawns were rather big and fresh.Finally their service was really good! The lady in charge was very patient, friendly and helpful. When I was walking up to the counter to pay, she asked if I liked the noodles. I immediately gave her a thumbs up sign! Not only because a meal at USD13-15 was very reasonable especially in the downtown area, but the fact that one could have noodles close to what we have back home was truely heart warming! I will definitely go back there for more.

Hole in a wall Vietnamese noodle restaurant. 🍜 I realized I have been here before. The food and service are good. It is not the place where you want to sit for long. It is pretty much, you sit, order, get your food, finish it, pay, and leave. It is also located in not a nice neighborhood. I am not sure if it is safe to walk around or not. In the morning it seems fine but you need to be aware of your surroundings. Parking could be a challenge. I like the wonton combination egg noodle. The taste is almost the same as other Vietnamese/Chinese noodle restaurant.

An amazing gem found in SF Tenderloin. We got the wonton lomein and it was 🔥. We asked for jalapeños which adds a refreshing crunch and kick. The noodle and the broth comes in separate bowls. I first get a few spoonful of broth on top of the noodle, add some chili oil, and mix the noodle up.Definitely one of the best wonton mein I’ve had.Came here to celebrate my little bros early birthday. Good food and good company, you can’t beat that.Neighborhood is a little bit sketch and rough though. This place is located deep in the tenderloin so make sure you’re aware of where you step and your surroundings. I rarely seek out Vietnamese food, but I come here just for the braised duck egg noodle! The duck is very tender and pairs very well with the noodle. You can choose thick or thin noodles and it’s a bit dry without the soup so I suggest getting it in the soup, but you can also opt to get it on the side. Wontons aren’t too special but they’re not bad either so why not? :)Tip: They close early around 6-6:30pm everyday and it’s not located in the best area, so just keep that in mind!

I particularly like the seafood ones, which come in a rich, buttery broth.All bowls come with a really big portion of noodles. You can pick what type of noodles come with it (personal favorite - thick egg noodles) and there are a bunch of sauces at the table to customize your bowl. This place is amazing! Ive never had Chinese noodle soup, but I enjoyed it more than pho. The egg noodles were delicious and the broth was packed with flavor. Also the chicken/beef tasted fresh. Legendary Chinese noodles house still making it happen in a big way. There’s comfort food which makes your meal and they there’s food that makes your whole week, this is one of those places. A huge variety of fresh noodles are available, my favorite being the flat rice and my wife’s is the silver (glass) noodle. Either or they’ve got us covered. The noodles are accompanied by a beautifully made broth that enriches your soul upon consumption. Another one of my favorites it the wontons in chili oil. Perfectly crafted wonton in a spicy and tangy oil sauce, outstanding! I’ll wash it down with a sour plum drink and my wife will take a fresh soy. Get soup on the side so you can add sauces to your noodles, at least I prefer it that way. It would have been better if they had a winning sauce combination and pre-added that to the noodles though. Visited last March in a party of 7. Despite it being 4 in the afternoon there was still a long wait before we got a table. Some of us opted to wait outside because there wasnt a lot of space in the small restaurant. Stopping by this place on a Friday and I was glad they were opened for dine-in. We parked across the street, but try to come early because parking is pretty limited.I think the broth was really good. However, if you’re like me who likes it a bit saltier, there are plenty of condiments on the table for you to add.They accept cash and card now! So no worries if you don’t have cash. Overall a good place if you crave won tons and noodle soup.

We go to Hai Ky every weekend before the pandemic. Ive tried most of the menu items, from braised duck leg to pork kidney to rare beef to satay beef to beef brisket, and everything is always impeccable. The atmosphere is warm and old-school. The staff are hella effective, but always nice and patient with the customers. They speak at least four languages: English, Vietnamese, Mandarin and Teochow, maybe also Shanghainese but Ive never tried.Post-pandemic Ive only ordered delivery. Quality is still top-notch. My little life-hack is to save some of the clear broth (seems to be chicken, shrimp and fish based) to braise veggies for dinner, and save some of the satay sauce to braise beef.

Girlfriend found this through Instagram and it definitely lived up to expectations! Egg noodles are so good here. We both got the thick squiggly ones. I opted for beef satay (my usual go-to) and she got the braised duck. Both were brimming with noodles and flavor. They certainly dont skimp here. Cash only here too, so come prepared. My good friend and I came here for a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon, and it was perfect for us! We needed to catch up over yummy Vietnamese food as he had just traveled to Vietnam and I had been there 4 years ago - lots to chat about! You can also get it with soup but I prefer it dried. The noodles were chewy and not too soft just the way I like it. It wasnt too oily like many Asian dried noodles tend to be. The best part was the duck leg. It was perfectly braised, lots of meat and really tender and juicy.If you like spicy food, Id recommend adding some of the spicy sauce (not siracha) they have on the table. This place has some of the best noodles in the city. Everyone talks about how cheap it is, but I would still pay if the prices were higher. I always order the noodles dry, with a bowl of soup and you can wet them however you please. Throw in some hot sauce and its the best meal of the day. Their broth in all the noodles soup Ive had is sooo perfect for any type of day youre having. Ive had their seafood soup, braised duck leg soup, and their wonton soup. All were great. The duck leg combo soup is a little too heavy for me but it is a must try and its their speciality. My favorite is the seafood with wonton combo! I paid this little Vietnamese hole-in-the-wall because of the great things people have said about their duck leg dry noodle with wontons, but I was sorely disappointed. The noodles werent even vermicell, which is what is traditionally used for dry pho...instead, what I got was cheap Chinese egg noodles that tasted stale and completely undercooked. Is this place Vietnamese or Southern Chinese? I think this place may have an identity crisis like me. Or maybe it is just satisfied with being. Certainly it should with the amount of love it gets from yelp!I ordered the Braised Duck Leg Noodle soup with Wontons and Egg Noodle (# 4).I did not like how hard the wontons are. They tasted undercooked and essentially like a beef ball in egg dough wrapping. The thin egg noodle was also a bit undercooked. I think the restaurant justifies this by reasoning that the noodle will cook while you consume your meal. However, I much rather have my food cooked before I start eating. Just a personal preference you know. (Note: Cathy S. ordered the thick egg noodle that remained undercooked even at the end of the meal. She was sad. I think our lesson from Cathy is to stick to THIN egg noodle kids.)However, I do find the overall noodle soup satisfying. The sour and sweet cucumber and carrot garnish makes for an interesting addition to the braised duck leg soup.To close, I would skip anything from Hai Ky with wontons in it. My family have been eating here for over 10 yrs since they work in the city. I only started coming here when I met my husband. This is the real deal people!!! You cant find a better chinese noodle house anywhere else with such delicious flavorful not salty broth. I could eat here every weekend. Ive always passed by it but never really gave it a second glance until I heard friends giving it rave reviews.Wanting something warm and noodle-y on a cold SF day while sick, I found out this place had the famous dry pho at Ha Nam Ninh. Its not as good, but its a great substitute since the other place can have weird hours and can get super busy. They dont have the pre-made sauce so you kind of have to mix your own, but doesnt make it any less tasty. Service is how it usually is at Asian places, quick and to the point.
