When my old pal Pismo Pete called and asked if I could help him and his little clambanger of a wife out with the installation of the cannon turret atop the old water tower on his spread, I was all in. Its been a long time since Ive been up to the top of Grillhaven Ridge overlooking the ocean there at Pismo beach, and all I asked for was a 5 gallon bucket of fresh Pismo Clams. Well, we got the turret up, and to my surprise a 150mm cannon. I didnt ask and made sure my finger prints were wiped off, thats for sure. I stopped in San Louis Obispo for fuel and spotted the High Street Market & Deli and just had to get one of their famous sandwiches, theyre the best on the coast! 5 stars ☆☆☆☆☆

Passing through SLO, a friend highly recommended this place. I like sandwiches enough. After the first bite I was questioning the last decade of my life and my approaches to everything. I didn’t know a sandwich could be so good. (I got the Dutch punch after a worker told me it was a popular one)

Probably top 3 sandwich spots I’ve ever been to, and I’ve been to a lot in the Bay Area. Great atmosphere, although it can get busy (we ended up waiting an hour for ours to be ready). Highly recommend the Dutch Punch. We also tried the daily special that day and it was very good.

Super good sandwich place with a shaded patio and sweet staff. I got a simple BLT that turned out to be big enough for two meals and tastier than any Ive had before. I had no idea a BLT could be that good! My husband got a pastrami sandwich with jalapenos and the worlds largest pickle. He was too busy eating to give me a review but looked very happy. This is a lovely place!

High Street deli is always crowded but recently they made some changes I really dont like. One they decided to have no more people eat inside so they took the tables outside and they let everybody wait outside whether it rains or not tough luck you cant eat inside anymore. Number two, which is a drag they dont sell any bottled beer anymore, everything is in lousy cans and everything is local beer, nothing is imported anymore, completely sucks. Theyre brew selection stinks because I hate aluminum cans. Before it was High Street deli it used to be Westbrook Sandwiches, which Westbrooks was far better even though its all the same it was different ownership the sandwiches were more affordable, you could eat inside, they had soda, beer etc all in bottles but not anymore. Yeah its always busy and they say youll get a discount if you pay in cash but they really almost made it normal price during happy hour so its not really getting a discount anymore even if you pay in cash. Lastly if you pay in a credit card theyre going to want a tip but theres no service so they want to tip anyways. Its kind of sad, I understand that these people are doing a lot of business but they really kind of lost some of their originality as sandwich shop thats been there for generations.They need to bring the tables back inside and they should serve import beer again and in bottles, give people choice whether customers want in bottles or cans, give customers a choice.

Hands down best sandwich in California. Dutch Punch a must, Italian sub…lime, the wait for our food was going to be over an hour. So, we placed our order and went downtown to poke around SLO for an hour. If you’re in a hurry you’re going to leave disappointed. Nobody warned us, so consider yourself warned…order in advance! You won’t be sorry. A nice little outdoor seating area. Super nice staff, too.

The place is super cool! The sandwiches are super delicious! The staff is super nice!It has been opened since 1927, which super awesome, because 100 years birthday coming up in a few years :) And 4.20 happy hours is super great deal!The menu is fantastic - everyone can find what they love. We try to go to High Street at least once maybe twice, when we are visiting our friends that live in Pismo Beach. Their sandwiches are amazing! Meats, cheeses and bread are very good. They do not skimp on the portions.The employees we have talked to are all very friendly. Its a busy high volume little sandwich shop. They stay happy and up beat.We have waited as long as 45 minutes for our sandwiches. Some times we call it in ahead of time. At 4:20 pm they have 1/2 half sandwiches. We like their choices for chips. They have our favorite chips we have never seen anywhere else. Larger bags also.

Friends said we had to stop here on our Santa Barbara to Pacific Grove drive. The recommendation was excellent. This is a great sandwich shop with lots of personality and great food. It’s well run, extremely clean, and friendly staff. Don’t miss it. And it’s a great stop along the way to Hearst Castle.

On a 101 road trip and decided to stop. Got a BYO Sandwich with the homemade meatloaf on a French roll. The bread was delicious (soft enough on the inside that everything didnt come spilling out the sides when you bite in but also crunchy enough on the outside to give it some structure and texture). The meatloaf was also really delicious - not dry, heated slightly, perfect with the pepperoncini and onions that I added.Staff was nice, and the sandwich was made quickly. Theres some outdoor seating available (but it looks like that gets filled up quickly). Definitely will stop here again in the future!

Cool, and tiny little sandwich shop with great quality ingredients. fun atmosphere and really nice employees as well. I walked up to the sandwich counter and one employee was quite busy, but just stopped what he was doing and asked me how I was. I got the Chipotle beef, and it was really good. I would suggest it for sure. the way you order is weird, so you have to go to the sandwich counter and fill out a form with what you want, drop it back off at the counter and wait for your name to be called. then you pay for your sandwich and anything else you want (they have lots of flavors of chips). a must go to place when in SLO, as is every other place here.

This spot blew up, and not in a good way. 50 minute wait for a sandwich order and they didnt tell me this when I ordered or before. I heard a customer ask and got a refund, as I was traveling. Great example of a little spot going mainstream. Sigh, it was good while it lasted. Customer base is probably travelers and tourists now. Bummer.

They have some amazing specials, I got two bottles of wine for 30% off on a Monday. My daughter bought a stuffed animal and everyone was so kind and helpful. We were there on a super windy day, and my bottle of wine blew over and broke! I was heartbroken, and when I told the staff what it happened, they replaced the bottle of wine for no charge. Excellent human beings, I will definitely be back!

My husband and I came into High Street on the way to Big Sur today. We had phenomenal service. I believe the front worker was named Stormy and she was a ball of sunshine. She greeted me with a compliment and made our experience flow smoothly. She helped me with all of my dietary restrictions and made sure our sandwiches came out perfect. Was introduced to this gem by a colleague at work. Lovely Irish themed deli and Sandwich shop with a nice staff and fun atmosphere. I loved my sandwich. The bread tasted fresh. The store itself is small but that’s ok. Just avoid the crowds at lunch if you can. Good location in the middle of SLO. Lots of working class people love this place: the price is right. Merchandise is available for sale as well and they have lots of drinks to choose from.

How have I gone this long without reviewing HSD? Throw a walnut shell in the air in SLO and its bound to land on a sandwich shop. This one is consistently the best. HSD is one of those great old institutions in SLO that holds up to the hype and in some ways theyve even gotten better in recent years. If youre a well traveled person (and I assume youre traveling reading this) then you know every city has a great local food place that has a certain it factor. You miss it when youre away for an extended period of time and its one of the first places you hit up upon your return. In my view, HSD is that place. My personal go-to is the Italian on a French Roll no mayo, no onions, no Cheese add avocado. Thats my guilty pleasure happy place. Now whats improved are the sodas in the soda fountain. I normally skip the high fructose fizzy water but no joke, HSD has some of the best sodas on tap. The Orange Soda is especially good, real sugar too.Now things to know: There is OFTEN a line out the door and the SLO HSD is a very small establishment. Calling ahead or going on weekdays / off times is advised. They have a paper check-box menu system that often confuses newcomers. Grab the menu (usually outside by the entry ramp), fill your menu out and then go directly to the cashier, theyll take it from there. If youre confused at all, theyll help. Lastly, there IS a much larger and slightly different HSD out in Baywood (Los Osos). If youre on vacation and have a larger group with you, that may be a better option for you. Its in a very beautiful area so its not like its a trek just for the sandwich. That one serves burgers and fries as well. Its slightly different flavors (I still prefer the charm of SLO) but its definitely just as good. Good luck and enjoy!

420/10High St. Deli never fails to bring the highest quality sandwiches to the people. Grubbed the Tropical Vacation & was reminded what it feels like to feel at peace on a beach. Ingredient ratio literally so on point that I tasted the entire piece of art that was my sandwich. Doobie snack hit just right and quelled the inner beast while I waited (not too long either given how packed this place was) for the gold at the end of my 420 rainbow 🌈. Even copped some merch and got a sandwich for 5$. Much love for this constantly dank sando spot. My wife and I were passing through SLO on a road trip and found High Street Market and Deli on Trip Advisor. We were really impressed. Both of our sandwiches were outstanding. I had the Jalapeño popper sandwich and loved it. The ambiance of the place was also cool with most tables set up alongside the building similar to an alleyway. Food 5/5. Will be coming back the next time we are in SLO.

After a long time hearing about this little deli outside downtown I wanted to found out what made this place special and try some of their recommended craft (Sandos!)This little unique building has a ton a flavor in itself and so many fun signs and old memorabilia on the wall it made it a visual and memorable ambiance.The experience starts with you getting to choose your own sandwich and write down your order. I personally think this adds to the experience and along with the food and decor you can see why people were lined up out the door.I decided to start with their beef dip “doobie style”. While I get the reference not sure why the name.I was recommended to try the potato salad as my side choose to go along with it. Sure I thought, start with the go to’s and let’s dig in.The Sandwich was delicious. The standard had a lot of pickles and added to the layers of taste and a fun sour balance with the beef and the a’jus. Next time I probably would get without pickles or have in the side.The potatoes salad was delicious as well and interested to see what other treats you can add.As I sat outside and enjoyed my sandwich while taking in the decorations and beautiful San Luis Obispo area I was able to see why this place is a good one to add to my sandwich rotation around this wonderful town.Would love to hear your favorite go to’s here and what to try ok my next Sando adventures?!

Love this place!, Ordered the CPK sandwich. Essentially a barbecue chicken sandwich on Dutch crunch. It was absolutely fantastic. Best sandwich Ive eaten in a long time. I will definitely be going back more often. Service is great. Very friendly staff. The soup was amazing. Chicken tortilla would highly recommend to anyone. We wanted to stop by and grab a sandwich, but it was close to their closing time so we tried to call in an order at around 5:15pm. The employee said they werent taking phone orders, just online or in person and the wait time was an hour and 45 minutes. We were 5 mins away so we popped over place an in person order. When we arrive, the worker asks if were picking up an order -- we say no. The worker reiterates its an hour and 45 minute wait for food, even though the restaurant is completely empty. thats okay we say. The worker looks confused then tells us theyre now closed -- even though it was within their operating hours listed. Normally Im not a Karen about these things; ive worked in service before, people showing up in the last 10 minutes are whatever... but why tell us youll take our in person order? why lie about it being an hour 45 minute wait? just say hey were not taking any orders anymore. Were adults, we can handle that... its a sandwich. Overall, just be honest, dont lie to your customers. Bad experience. If the person on the phone had just been honest, we wouldnt have shown up and tried to order in person -- wasted everyones time unnecessarily

OHMAGAWD. Go here. No frills establishment and it’s a college town so expect there there to be a lot of young people and expect it to be busy but it’s absolutely a hidden gem. It’s unpretentious and small town feels with amazing sandwiches. We got the Dutch Punch and New York Pastrami. Both fantastic but I suspect you really can’t go wrong with anything on their menu.

High Street Deli is a solid choice for a sando. That oldschool China-pencil-and-paper order method ensures that your order will be spot-on. While all of their ingredients are quality, theres a few selections that stand out. For me, their meatloaf adds a chef kiss to anything you get. Go figure out what your go-tos are.If youre trying to get a sando even remotely close to typical chow-time, It would behoove you to order ahead otherwise risk a long wait. They are quite popular afterall.Having grown up here in SLO, spending a lot of time running around that side of town as a kid, the fact that they kept the old Eskimo Ice mural means a lot, especially as the charm SLO is known for rapidly gets shellacked under a thick coat of tacky-Stockton-style-built-in-a-day-uberdeveloper-trash posing as farmstead charm.

More overpriced merch for sale than food. Idk what a sando is. There was a line before the place even opened. Everyone there looked really preppy and some woman in a sunhat and patagonia was being high-strung about nobody cutting her in line. Youd think this place was Gordon Ramsays TV kitchen or something. However, the sandwiches were pretty good, so Ill give it a pass.

Plenty of 5 star reviews for this place and heres another. Absolutely awesome sandwich! The Dutch roll with double meat, Chipotle, jack cheese was amazing. Was only able to eat half so Id recommend sharing a sandwich if you can. Got there at 11 and it was starting to get packed up so get there early or call in. But well worth it. The sandwich was really really good! Staff was extremely friendly. They run a great operation. We came in from San Diego and stopped in and it was better than my favorite deli down there.

Lets start with the facts: if you want a good and absolutely filling sandwich, you come here. I got the Dutch Punch sandwich with the option to Make it Stoney (aka chefs choice on extra toppings) and it was delicious, and surprising (who knew jalapeños and cranberry sauce went well together?). The employees are also very friendly and helpful.Now we get to the bad part. We got there about 10 minutes before their happy hour started, and decided to wait until it started to order. So we were effectively the first to order at happy hour. We then proceeded to wait 40 minutes for our sandwiches. 40! We saw people come in after us and leave with a sandwich while we were waiting! Eventually the sandwiches came out, and the employee did apologize for the wait, but 40 minutes for a sandwich, even a sandwich as good as this, is far too much. Im hoping this is a one-off, but it did put a sour taste in our mouth.

Customer service is in par with McDonalds (worse). Unless youre prepared to order +20 sandwiches and spend over $250, they dont care about your business. Their website was down today, so I called them to place order and they refused to take my order over the phone. Their absurdly obnoxious rep, Bailey, told me that I could either try their webite again after clearing my browsing history or come in person to place order. Bearing in mind, that their in-person wait times are typically +1 hours long, this was not a good option for me. Beyond the customer service nightmare they are, their soggy sandwiches are truly over-hyped, mediocre at best. Also, they always mess up the orders. The store itself isnt too big but you can see the artwork from outside the building so you know not to drive past it. Would recommend some form of orderliness so you are not standing around blocking everyone. I would also recommend a micrphrone/ speaker for when the order is ready. All of this being said, my wife and I still had an awesome experience and there is something almost attractive and excitig about the chaos. The outdoor dining was fun and trendy. When we are back in town again, we plan on eating here again. For you veggie lovers, we recommend the Mother Nature Veg and garden burger but preferred the garden burger over the Mother Nature, you can also substitute any sandwich with veggie meat.

These sandwiches are legit!! A college spot & locals spot. They have good beer, some on tap. The vibe is great. You write your sandwich request on an order form & turn in. Wait till its done, then you pay. More of a spot for people who enjoy a happening spot. It can get crowded since its popular. High Street Deli has some of the best sandwiches in SLO county. You will find them located amongst homes on High Street in the city of San Luis Obispo.Two of my favorites are the Tropical Vacation (Smoked turkey, jalapeño havarti, the works, romaine, sprouts, avocado, honey mustard, cranberry, on sliced sourdough), and the Beef Dip Doobie Style (Roast beef, au jus, jack, chipotle mayo, dijon, pepperoncini, red onion, pickle, French roll. Served with a side of mac or potato salad). Or, you can always build your own, if you dont want to try one of their awesome creations.There is a large group of employees who work here, in such a small place. They have ALWAYS been pleasant, informative, and efficient.Be sure to pick up a t-shirt, or some stickers. Their t-shirts have some very unique, and cool looking artwork printed on them. And sometimes they have a special: BUY A T-SHIRT, GET A SANDO (SANDWICH) FOR $5.REMEMBER....If theres a line..... its definitely worth the wait. You must get the Dutch crunch roll because it is their most famous and it is very good! Tasty sandwiches, but DAMN, theyre slow at lunchtime. Worth it if you have the time, but plan on having at least 20 minutes wait if you dont call ahead with your order. There are a lot of sandwich places in town that are nearly as tasty, and do a lot more business, and do it more quickly.

The sandwiches here are soooo good but the wait and crowded lines are tooo long!! We came at 11am and there was nowhere to sit. I had to wait 20-30 minutes for my sandwich and there was no iced tea or cold brew coffee left on tap. Hopefully they figure out a way to shorten the wait time, or at least refill the coffee to make the wait more bearable!

Above average quality food, but the staff here assumes you are a local and you know how this place works. On my first visit, the proprietor/manager was irritated with me and other customers for not knowing how to order and where to wait for our orders in their very small, congested building during an extremely busy Good Friday lunch rush. My actions were out of ignorance and not or disrespect for others when filling out the order form and waiting for my order. Once she realized that my family and I were from out of town, the proprietor/manager was very kind to me. If its your first time here, I recommend that you talk to an employee to see how the ordering process works--to include the best way to fill out an order form. Dont take other customers word for it for it or try to figure it out for yourself.They do offer a military discount at this establishment.

Fantastic sandwiches and location. This is small town SLO for sure. However, it can often be packed to the brim with students, and the wait can be a bit long. Prices are fair for how good the food is, but slightly more expensive than some of the other sandwich shops in SLO. High Street will always have a special place in my heart, and my stomach.

The sandwiches are DELICIOUS, and there is a nice patio off to the side where you can sit and eat. They have a great selection of drinks, including craft beer. The sandwiches are the best in SLO.. my favorite is the chipotle beef... but you cant go wrong. They have a 420 special, where they offer discounts on sandwiches from 4:20 PM until close. However, plan on waiting a while if you go for the special, as it gets quite busy!

I had a surprisingly disappointing experience with the service I recently received. It was Dec 23rd and I hadn’t noticed that their website said they were closed and I placed an order online thinking they were open. I hadn’t noticed they were closed and their system pushed and accepted my order for five days later when they were open. I wish their system would have just not taken the order or was more clear about the fact that it would be ready on a future day. I just didn’t see the date for pick-up was a future date. When I called to resolve this and see if the order could be cancelled five days later, I was too late and the manager was very rude about my not seeing their closure. I guess I was just disappointed in the way I was treated when I called to see if I could catch a break. She was somewhat condescending and sassy about my not noticing they were closed. It just left me thinking that they have plenty of business and don’t need mine.

Even though they were super busy, they have an energetic and helpful staff and got my sandwich order out in good time. I ordered the daily special turkey sandwich and it came on fresh ingredients and perfectly toasted bread. No pressed lunchmeat here. Only good quality cuts and crisp produce. Great place to pick up a picnic orStaney either inside or out front. Dont forget to pick up a growler full of draft kombucha while youre there.
