We ordered Omakase and the fish was really good. Fresh, well prepared although a little smaller in size. We reserved a table yet was assigned a sushi bar counter which worked out well for us. The service was a bit disorganized as we were served some appetizers that we didnt order. Thats why a 4 star rating. The restaurant was busy till 8:30 pm on Friday.

Amazing food and service. Had a lot of food, from the assorted sashimi to a recommended roll, the oysters special, and the a5 wagyu special. All were top tier food. Ate outside since weather was nice, great experience bar a few ants. Server was very polite and quick.

Great small Japanese restaurant. There is now outdoor seating with heat lamps. The food is great and the staff is friendly and helpful. They start with hot towels which is a nice touch. The specials are good and they are a lot to choose from. Tried the a-5 waygu beef which was great. Really enjoyable experience.

One of our groups favorite Bay Area sushi restaurants. Sushi is always very fresh, nicely prepared, with great service. Presentation is a plus. Reasonable prices for what youre getting. Fortunately, its close enough for us to frequent. Right on El Camino, with parking in back.

This is literally the most delicious sushi ever.Eating here is a meditation.Every mouthful is saturated with flavor and texture, the fish melting away with each bite, as you helplessly try to hold on to that fleeting experience.Absolutely delightful.

Came here dinner time on Friday and could get seated without waiting and with no reservation for a group of five.Service was good. Amenities also good. Theres a small parking lot in the back too.Our food came out pretty quickly and everything taste great. The quantities are what youd expect - not too big but still enough. I really liked the rolls (we got lion king roll and dragon roll). Ill definitely like to keep coming here.

Second time weve dined here this year. I have to say Im not impressed. The sushi combo was fine but had no outstanding flavor. Theyre very stingy with the wasabi. And I just think its mediocre.But its really the service that disappoints. We were rushed out of our table within an hour. My wife asked for a water refill and basically we were told to leave instead. This is a $30 plus per person restaurant and Im not feeling Im getting much value for the money. Ive had nigiri sushi at AYCE restaurants that tasted better. From the reviews i guess a lot of people love it here. But this is my last meal at Higuma.

This place is by far the best Japanese sushi restaurant with a reasonable price and great selections. Tamago is exceptional! You will find quality tempura here as well. I love the vibe in addition. I am saving it for my one of the handful favorite places. You will have your stomach full with just nigiri without filling it with rolls. We ordered two Combination A, additional sushi from the board, tempura, and temaki.

Its a small restaurant, so make a reservation or come early if you want a table. The sushi is superb and fresh. Theyve got unique options like a genuine caviar sushi and barracuda if youre feeling like going off the common path. Otherwise, they have lots of staples. The service was great and theres usually always a waitress looking out for any needing diners. The seating arrangements can be a little cramped though, so I do advise sitting outdoors or just ordering take out if youre trying to feed the extended family.

Very friendly staff; Japanese Sushi Chef makes awesome cuts of sashimi. The Saba and Toro was divine! You have to try their Gindara(grilled black cod); it is amazing!Don’t forget to ask for their daily specials. Today it was blue fin and assorted mackerel.

Everything we ordered was fresh and delicious. The chirashi was beautifully presented, the sashimi tasty and of a wider variety than most other Japanese restaurants Ive been to. Their takoyaki had a really lovely crisp exterior and a perfectly cooked interior; genuinely the best Ive had.Service was very fast and attentive. The experience was well worth the price tag.

Higher quality Japanese food in a very cozy and cute restaurant. Price is a bit higher than other restaurants in the area (bento at night $17-19) but the food definitely tastes better !Also they have 2 sushi chefs so sushi gets served fairly quickly.They have minimum expenditure per person, I think its $12/person at night and $20/person if at the sushi bar.

Cute place with hard working staff, so it pains me to write this review, but I would caution about coming here for sushi or Japanese food. Their more mainstream fish like salmon scallop and hamachi were fine, but the more special fish like snapper, halibut, and flounder were very underwhelming, very little taste and small cuts. I know sushi is a very subjective taste category, but Ive been to many Japanese restaurants in California, New York, Tokyo, Taiwan etc, so take this for what its worth.The katsu is also very disappointing, as you can see from the photo. But thats kind of the typical USA style katsu.

We were really excited to try out Higuma seeing a 4.6 star rating. Very seldom do we come across a 4.5+ sushi joint and somehow Higuma never went noticed.To sum it up, Higuma comes across really authentic. It is run by a Japanese owner and family and you can clearly taste the non-commercial way of preparing hearty Japanese food. Higuma does not try to be fancy and to a degree, it almost feels like home-cooked. This is very rare as most sushi places feel like a mini factory these days, making the same bland sushi over and over.We ordered a collection of daily specials (really pricey considering all the imported fish). The nigiri was definitely made with care and love. Whoever was behind the counter certainly cares about what he/she puts on the plate, making the sushi with quality ingredients. Everything felt fresh and wholesome. In large, we genuinely enjoyed the 10-piece custom nigiri set.So then why the 4 stars? First, the sushi is SMALL. When I say small, it probably is half the size of other regular Japanese restaurants. At first, it almost looked like a play set or toy display. So the fishes were cut small, as well as the rice that supports it. And where most sushis were great, the W5 wagyu was a massive disappointment. If they had used great wagyu (most likely they should have), over cooking it and serving it lukewarm was a huge mistake. Perhaps they made that one first and let it sit on the tray.I want to give Higuma another shot and the next time we come, well definitely go with the regular sorts. Hopefully the price will be more justifiable then. I see potential here!

This used to be one of our favorite restaurants. But we had a horrible experience today. It was ridiculous amount of wait because they couldn’t figure out how to sit people efficiently and at the end we left after an hour wait. Very disappointing!

We ordered Omakase (The Chefs choice nigiri set) & other sushi to go yesterday for my husbands quarantine birthday at home. He enjoyed the Omakase so much. Omakase includes many rare and high quality fish that are not available at a regular sushi restaurant. The sushi chefs interpretation and modern touch add amazing flavor and detention to the traditional nigiri. I highly recommend Higumas Omakase for those who are bored with a regular traditional sushi. Anago was outstanding too!!Last but not least, this place is owned by an authentic Japanese sushi chef. Non-sushi items in the menu are also very delicious! Try their chicken karaage. Yummy.

This place is a hidden gem in RWC! My partner and I had a Higuma donburi, a dinner bento box and a mixed tenpura. I orders two rolls one vegetarian and one with seafood. The ordered was packed all together I kindly asked to get anew roll in a separate container for my daughter. The server ( an older person) was very rude and angry she told the chef that I wanted one more roll and I was not willing to pay for my order. There was an argument between the chef and the server in their native language that I was unable to understand. I waited 10 more minutes for the food and the chef refused to make a new roll. They both where very upset because they have to waste 5 pieces of veggi roll. They showed me that they don’t care about the costumer, but their profits onlyToo bad I would take my business somewhere else.

The staff here are incredibly nice and extremely attentive. Im in town on a business trip and just picked the sushi place closest to my hotel on a whim. It was a very happy accident, as the sushi rolls were excellent, fresh and flavorful. The new ownership has surpassed the previous owners which were good to start with. Tempura was perfectly prepared and highest quality. The sushi rice is as it should be in texture and with modest amount. Sushi was excellent, not too big which is a plus IMO, proper temperature - almost room temp. Every dish skillfully prepared and delicious. A very nice place and my new favorite.

This is a small business and it’s basically a family, Tom the owner and sushi chef is a sweetheart and goes out of his way to make me stuff that’s not on the menu sometimes. Made a reservation for 8PM, Friday. Showed up at 7:30, just to check in. Place was full. Told them I wanted a seat indoors. Guy said ok. I asked when I should show again and was told 8:15. I went here last weekend and sat at their outdoor seating. Very cute front patio and was able to park right in front of the restaurant. Their sushi was inexpensive and able to get a few different types of cheaper rolls as well as a specialty roll. Spent about $15 per person and was full by the end. The parking and seating are somewhat limited. The service is usually slow, but we keep coming back. The sushi is great. The miso is delicious. I am so happy to find this lovely restaurant. My spicy tuna hand roll and the pasted plum and cucumber hand roll are delicious. The fish is so very fresh. I love the dressing on the salad also. Went here last night and we were overcharged. They were out of two nigiri we ordered and forgot one nigiri entirely. Our first bill had all items still on it (even the 60 dollars worth of things they were out of and/or forgot) the second bill had one piece of nigiri removed, like we wouldnt notice they only removed one 10 dollar nigiri.Bummer too, because we used to love this place. Keep your credit card far away from here.

The fish is fresh.They setup a minimum price that you must order, $ 9.50 lunch, 12 dinner, 20 sushi bar. How can they require you to pay a certain amount? This is a small place not like a distinguished large restaurant. I was not happy about the minimum. The hostess made me move from the sushi bar to a table( I like sitting at the sushi bar and interacting with the chefs). I ended up spending around 28 bucks though.

Apparently, its very popular and got busy within 30 min of opening.The nigiri is fresh and tasty but seems like half the average portion. The yakitori is moist but only thigh meat and the sauce is way too sweet. They should switch to just shiyo (sea salt). Service was friendly from one of the two servers.

This just might be the best sushi Ive had since I left Japan years ago. I actually went for the black sesame ramen (which was also fantastic - usually if a place doesnt specialize in ramen only, the ramen isnt too good, but this place is something special.) I didnt even want sushi when I went with my girlfriend, but I couldnt resist trying a few bites, and my goodness was it impressive. I honestly cant wait to go back. My husband and I were really looking forward to eating at Higuma. We made a reservation for 7:30 pm on Friday, also Valentines Day 2020. When we arrived at 7:30, they showed us a piece of paper with 7:00 written down by our name & phone number, and told us they had given the table away. They had not called at 7pm, which is poor customer service, and would have allowed them the opportunity to correct their mistake. We checked the e-mail, and it was confirmed for 7:30, so this was 100% their fault. This made for a very disappointing Valentines night, and we will not support their poor attention to detail and terrible customer service.

Picked up dinner here the other day: Tonkatsu, udon, soft shell crab, and a sushi combo. Overall was happy with the meal. Very friendly people as well!And, on a COVID note: everybody had masks, there was hand sanitizer, and everybody appeared properly spaced. My only suggestion would be to support touchless transactions for those who might be more wary (if possible). But, definitely not a deal breaker for me.

My wife and I went to this restaurant yesterday because of the comparatively positive reviews on yelp and Google. The dining experience did not turn out well at all.We went to the restaurant, and were sitting there waiting to be serviced for a whole 5 minutes, with no menus and no drinks offered. We had to say excuse me and wave at the waitress several times before getting served. Finally this old waitress came and only said to us wait!. I was shocked, her tone sounded like we were there begging for food, not to mention that there is absolutely no apology for the delayed service.Though we were both very hungry, I was afraid the service will ruin our entire dining experience and our mood during our pre-wedding holiday. I asked for a takeaway instead.Now the food, the food just does not meet the standard at its price point. We ordered two bento boxes, one with chicken teriyaki and veggie tempura, another with beef teriyaki and prawn tempura. The beef is not tender. The tempura is ok. Overall the food can pass but $40 for two bento boxes with food court quality, Id call it expensive! I mean, come on Yelpers and Googlers, this restaurant should be 3 stars at most.

Extremely pricey for what it is. And the price they charge you is completely different from both the google menu and their own website menu. Example: we ordered Tuna poke, on the google menu it shows $9.50 they charged us $16! And for a small portion just a few pieces of tuna laid on a few onion rings 😔We also ordered Gyoza and they have 2 different Gyoza which don’t show on the website: they have FROZEN gyoza and homemade gyoza! I was astonished to hear that they would serve frozen Gyoza 😳 don’t you go to a restaurant to have homemade gyoza? Otherwise you can buy a bag at Costco or Trader joe...anyway we were so disappointed by that price jump and the change in quality and customer service. I called them back to discuss price change once I got home and I could look at my bill. They said that their website is being updated and the prices are not current but that was it. I am thinking there might have been a change of ownership in between last year to this year. In a nutshell we paid 30% more than what we used to pay for similar order!! We won’t reorder and won’t go back!

Ive been going to Higuma for the sushi Eijisan expertly prepares for 20 years, 17 of those with my wife who comes from Japan, where we have experienced the best sushi in the world. Eijisan comes from Hokkaido and knows how to select and prepare the best fish for his restaurant. There are many sushiyas in the Bay Area and many of them are good, some not so, but only a few are truly excellent and Higuma falls into that category. Any words of praise I could offer here cant replace the experience of what Higumas truly great sushi tastes like, so the best thing to do is to go and experience it for yourself. Then you will know...

Higuma is traditional Japanese style sushi. A lotta sushi restaurant used a lotta sauce in sushi and result sweeter taste which I dont like. Higumas sushi is simple taste fish taste. Let the fresh fish speak for itself. Rice cooks to perfection. Another tip- Pay extra for real fresh wasabi. I can say they are one of the best sushi restaurant in San Carlos/redwood City .
