AMAZING!! Best Chinese food Ive had in my 8 years living in San Diego, we ordered the orange chicken, the combination fried rice and the Szechuan beef.. ALL 20/10! I could taste the fresh ingredients and they made the plates with a large quantity of protein I was so impressed. The orange chicken was the perfect ratio of chicken, batter and sauce and I could feel like this Chinese food wasnt greasy or overly salty. I absolutely loved this spot for take out and will definitely come back !!!!!( in the photo is just 1 serving of all the stuff I ordered at home ) I ended up serving myself 3 times cause it was way too good!For reference I came on Saturday at 6pm so whoever was cooking 🧑‍🍳🫶👏🏻

3:44PM, 29 NovThis place is bad. I ordered an Egg Drop Soup and the Steamed buns and the Egg Drop Soup came to me lukewarm. LUKEWARM EGG SOUP . It 100% was not cooked to order and when I called, the server told me to throw it in the microwave. Why...would I order from you if all I need to do was throw something in the microwave??? Make it make sense. You told me the food would be done in 5 minutes from my call and I got there in 4 minutes, this soup should have been scalding hot by the time I got it. So you have me cold soup and lied about it being made fresh. The ancestors would feel a type of way about you not having integrity with your food & customer service. The steamed buns were obviously frozen, cooked and hardened on the bottom and core of the bun which would only that they werent steamed at all. DO NOT GET THE STEAMED BUNS, save your couple of dollars and go one street over for quality buns and better soup.

We were headed to a different place and stumbled upon this place. It wasn’t crowded, so we wandered in. From the outside it, it didn’t look like much, but we took a chance. So glad we did. We ordered take-out. Service was very fast and. Friendly. The food was all delicious. Our favorite entree was the Beef and Sweet Onion dish. So tender and flavorful!

As a person born in Hong Kong and studying abroad, getting a taste of stuff I grown up eating surely is one of the best things in life.This Beef Chow Fun (Dry) or Fried rice noodles with beef successfully mimicked the taste of my home. It’s one the best dish you could have there, and my roommate from Switzerland, who took a bite from me, immediately ordered it since this dish is simply incredible.

I dont know why someone is not satisfied... we have been coming here for several months and have never encountered anything like this. The food here is great and none of my friends have ever complained. The waiters are always friendly, if you need any help in choosing dishes, they will always help. The guys had problems with electricity the other day, they didnt close and ran home, as many would have done! They thought about the safety of the guests and issued orders to go and fixed the problems. An hour later they were receiving guests again.

They recommended the kung pao shrimp but with chicken and beef mixed in as well and I’ve got to say, it was perfect! Did the lunch special which comes with soup and rice as well. Hit the spot! I’ll definitely be back if I’m ever in this neck of the woods.

This is the most backwards restaurant. From what I gather the people next-door took it over and are acting like they are the original owners. I think $.99 Chinese food would be 10 times better. My friend ordered iced tea and they brought hot tea. The waiter confirmed that’s what they are supposed to bring hot tea. So we had to ask for ice for the ice tea we ordered. We ordered chicken wings. They came out gray it smelt like the chicken had turned before they cooked it. I ordered hot mustard and they brought sandwich mustard. This was the worst experience at a restaurant. You pay when you order and there are not supposed to refund or exchange for something else. It’s a trapppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp

What the heck happened here?Mommy’s favorite Chinese food restaurant, now under new management: RUINEDHORRIBLE food, no taste at all, out of barbecue pork appetizer, no spicy mustard (they brought Dijon-mon Dieu!)no crisps for the soup, egg drop soup inedible, more protein in dishes, yes you didn’t have to dig and find Nemo-shrimp (I will give them that) but…but…NO FLAVOR AT ALL!!!No hot tea pots, shrimp bean sprouts tasted like cabbage, the noodles a joke, the special rice (again loaded with protein) but really, really bad…Mongolian beef? Don’t even bother. This food was terrible, my partner heard really good things so we gave it a try but we wont be dining here again. I got the sweet and sour shrimp, but it was all deep fried breading. It seems like they put extra breading to conceal really tiny overcooked shrimp, even scaling away the batter the shrimp were like rubber and couldnt be eaten. I just ate the pineapples out of the dish to be honest. The fried rice was decent but really covered in oil so we couldnt finish it. I also got chicken egg rolls and biting into them oil literally dripped into my mouth, when I took it out and squeezed it, oil pooled around my finger. I forgot what my partner got but he can eat pretty much anything and even he admitted it was a mistake. Eat at your own risk.

I found this place on doordash. I ordered the chicken wings and they were on point. The taste was amazing. My partner ordered the orange chicken which came with white rice. The chicken was crispy but it wasn’t saucy more like glazed honey texture a little bland but good enough to eat. A little pricy and a little on the smaller size. I really enjoyed my wings and they were the best part of the order.

Great hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant. The food was good, not great but still very good. I ordered a small hot & sour soup to start and it was delicious, they gave me plenty of crunchies too. For the main course I ordered the Kung Pao Triple Crown, which came with a small bowl of white rice. The dish had good flavor but I felt they went a bit overboard on the sauce. Had they played up the flavors of the shrimp, chicken, & pork the dish would have been better. Pricing is a little above average but certainly affordable. Overall I recommend this place for either dining in our take out. Its located in the heart of Hillcrest on Fourth St. BTW, I havent seen anyone post the restaurants menu so here goes....Enjoy!!

It was awful. My fried rice had rice was not completely cooked & tasted crunchy! When I called them to tell them to check on their rice, the guy was so rude on the phone, made it like I was lying. I am Asian & as if I could tell of the rice was not cooked or something. I had to file a claim with the credit card company to get my money back & threw away the fried rice. No decent Chinese restaurant should be open if they cant even cook rice!

This was my first visit to this restaurant. The service was fast and friendly. The food was alright but not the best Ive ever had. I had Mongolian Beef and Chicken Fried Rice. The beef plate had decent flavor but the rice plate had too much oil. The restaurant has several booths and no outdoor seating.

I received a text that my food was ready. My boyfriend went in and the staff said 10-15 minutes before it would be ready. Went in 10 minutes later, and again they said it would be 10-15 minutes. I went in and told them my order is ready. They looked around and picked up a bag that had been sitting on the back counter. That bag was there each of the previous times my boyfriend went in, and he even pointed to it and asked if it was ours. The man behind the counter didnt even respond. In fact, the first time my boyfriend went in and found out our oder wasnt ready, my boyfriend was surprised (because we had the text), and showed it on his face, and thew guy behind the counter rolled his eyes at him. On top of all that, the food was gross - inedible.

Worst Lo Mein and egg drop soup I’ve ever had….I used to live in San Diego and would go here regularly for years. The food was always good, tasty and large potions. It was always packed.Just came for a visit and went here for a quick dinner. I noticed it wasn’t the original owners or servers but was still hoping food was just as good. Had the egg drop soup and the Hong Kong special lo mein. The egg drop soup tasted of just salt and the lo mein had no taste and not much protein. It was basically plain noodle with watered down soy sauce. I couldn’t finish either dish (picture is half uneaten dishes). I complained to the waiter how bad the food was. She apologized, went and spoke to the chef and came back and offered me a new egg drop soup to go. She said it’s a NEW batch they’re making so it’ll be better.They get one star because the chicken and green bean my friend ordered was not too bad. All in all I won’t be going back. Waste of money!

I ordered unsweetened ice tea with no ice, I was given a cup of piping hot tea....that was weird and not what I asked for....the person taking our order was very nice and helpful, and tried to fix both the problems but I still will never return.

I left my original 5 star review below,but now under new management.. it is not the same. Got an order of dumplings and chowfun.. see pics. Those are suppose to be dumplings..I know not really..and chow fun is suppose to be a broad noodle dish with meat/seafood mixed with little to no veggies.. anyway i got whats pictured. Was told..thats how WE make chowfun.. interesting.. anyway do not recommend and they also dumped the lunch special menu as well.Great choice for Chinese food in Metro San diego area. Moving here from Orange county which is an Asian cuisine Paradise.. was disappointed in the lack of chinese restaurants,decent ones anyway, in urban areas of San diego. But finding this place was a god-sent. This restaurant has a very extensive menu and will do special orders as well. Had them a make a roast pork dish not on menu..no problem. Highly recommended and for visitors get you out of the tourists areas and enjoy Hillcrest as well.

Restaurant was clean inside. nice and quaint. I ordered beef lo mein and chicken fried rice to go.The service was quick. The packaging of the food was superb. They gave utensils, plenty of napkins, and sauces.The food was good and on par with most of the good asian cuisine ive had over the years. I tend to like mine a little saltier and seasoned though.I was a little suprised with how bland the lo mein was, but the meats were very good. The fried rice had a generous amount of chicken. Again. also a bit bland what I usually expect but it tasted great. And thankfully i like soy sauce so if youre like me just ask for more of those and you cant go wrong.Prices were a good value compared to whats around there.

My girlfriend I went here two days ago and it’s been maybe 6 months since the last time we’ve patronage the restaurant. We noticed it was remodeled and we didn’t recognize the staff. We asked if new owners had taken over and the staff completely skirts around the questions and wouldn’t answer us. We thought that was extremely off and on top of it, the staff was extremely rude. We grabbed our favorite egg drop soup to go. When we got home and tasted the soup we knew right away it was no longer owned by our favorite peeps. The soup was not the same color or consistency, the taste was extremely bad. So bad, that I will pretty much eat anything not to waste money, but I couldn’t stomach it.I don’t know how the new owners expect to run and operate what was a successful restaurant by lying and being dishonest, but I don’t recommend going.

Restaurant was freezing cold, but the folks working there were friendly and helpful. My only gripe about my food was that with the cashew chicken there was not enough chicken and way too much bitter green peppers and onions, and they were in such large pieces that they were barely cooked. Im used to cashew chicken being mostly chicken and cashews but this was more like kung pao with cashews unfortunately, with overwhelming onion and green pepper. But the egg drop soup and chicken lo mein were solid. Also- this was just confusing bur they gave us a bunch of regular yellow mustard packets?? I love hot mustard but regular sandwich yellow? That was just confusing! Lol. Anyway, Ill go back but Ill request no onions or green pepper next time because they were not good in the cashew chicken.

The fried rice is pretty unique as I’ve never had fried rice with shrimp, beef, and pork together and I must say it’s the best fried rice I’ve ever had.The wings are also really crispy and juicy, with a lot of flavor packed in each wing. I can’t say I’ve had better wings from a any other Chinese restaurant in San Diego!The egg rolls are probably my least favorite of the bunch here because I’m used to, and prefer, big and crispy egg rolls with blisters on the skin. These are more the size of spring rolls and even though they’re fried, it’s just not the same crunch as I’m used to. That said, they are still good but not as good as I’ve had before.Overall, this little Chinese restaurant is the best Chinese restaurant that I’ve tried in San Diego! It reminds me a lot of the restaurants that I used to order from in New Jersey where you can find amazing Chinese food in every town. Will definitely keep ordering all my Chinese food from here while I’m in San Diego.

This place used to be very generous in their portions. Last couple of times I went they reduced the amounts by more than half and raised their prices. Their Special Fried rice was huge and 14, now it’s 18 and like I said not even half of what it used to be in terms of size.They still have the same great flavors though.

The food lacked flavor and was way too expensive for what it is. $12.50 for a plate of Chicken fried rice? $13.95 for Kung Pao Chicken that was mostly vegetables (and not spicy)? This one cut deep, I adored this restaurant but after last night I am never coming back here again. I can see why many people would say or think that management back in the day was rude, but in my experience if you were culturally sensitive and knew what was considered good manners in Chinese culture they were an absolute delight and ALWAYS provided the best meals.I arrived and there was another customer ahead of us who was working for some food delivery app. He told the staff that he had been waiting for 30 minutes, a lady told him she would go check and see the status of the order he was supposed to deliver. I waited in line for about 7 minutes before another staff member showed up and we had to ask if they were still taking orders. I placed a simple order of shrimp broccoli, garlic green bean, and lemon chicken. I originally asked for egg drop soup but they had somehow ran out which would have never happened under previous management (looking at the reviews I must have had a guardian angel watching over me because apparently the egg drop soup here is vile)While I was waiting, one of the staff members walked up and asked what our order was, I repeated to them what I had ordered and they asked if they had given us a receipt. They did not. They went around the rest of the restaurant asking the other customers the same questions, to my surprise no one got a receipt. By the time my food arrived the poor driver had waited an entire hour before receiving the food he was supposed to deliver. We were told that there was also no lemon chicken and we were offered a refund or we could have another order that was untouched but rejected by a previous customer. I decided to roll the dice on that one and boy do I regret it.When I arrived home I encountered another unpleasant surprise. The food I received was green bean shrimp, green bean tofu, and a noodle, beef, shrimp, old veggie dish that smelled like it had been cooked in a dirty fishbowl. The only thing I could muster to eat was some rubbery beef and some barely cooked tofu before throwing out the rest of my food. I have never been this disappointed before with the quality of a meal I ordered. To add insult to injury this whole awful experience cost me $60.10/10 would NOT recommend.

The Restaurant has been open since 1980, which is my Birth Year. The place is nice and the pricing of the Food matches the Quality. We went there for Take Out and only had to wait 15 minutes. Which made for a nice walk around the Block. The Employee was very kind and we cant wait to go back. The Restaurant is open on the Weekends until 3 am. Which is very exciting.

I had this place this past Saturday evening, and it was some of the worst Chinese food I have ever had. We got the orange chicken, which didnt even taste like orange chicken, it actually tasted like nothing. The Lo Mein leaked all over the bag and when the container was opened, sauce got everywhere. The Lo Mein was so salty, it was inedible! I had to throw away the entire container. The only saving grace was the pot stickers and the egg rolls, which were decent enough to eat. I cant believe I wasted $40 on this place! I should have listened to the bad reviews over the good reviews. I will never eat here again.

I’ve gone to this restaurant for 30 years. We loved their won ton soup. It was made with home made broth and won tons, fresh veggies, pork and came with crispy won tons to sprinkle on top. It was delicious! Today we ordered $50 worth of soup. When we came home and opened the package we were shocked to discover the soup was nothing but canned broth and frozen Costco pot stickers and nothing else. The food is terrible. Save your hard earned money! This was so disappointing.

It might be the worst decision I have ever made right next to trying to slide down my stairs in a laundry bin when I was 7. The food here is flat out bad. It has been several years since we have been here. What a very nice surprise to walk into a completely renewed eestablishment. The place is attractive, well lit, and very clean. The quality of the food is also greatly enhanced with plenty options for fresh vegetables delivered in generous portions. The host, Tom Tom could not have been nicer. ***2022 UPDATE***I no longer recommend this place.Late in 2021 the biz was bought by new owners. Since then the quality of service and some of menu items and recipes has changed. I visited 2 times since the new ownership and observed a few things:During my first visit I noticed the presence fruit flies. I overheard another customer comment the same.On my second visit the customer service was poor or non existent. They failed to inform customers that there would be longer than usual wait times for food. They let customers remain seated without informing them they needed to place an order at the cashier. I think anyone who posted more than one star is a plant...Ive been coming here for 30-40 years.Sometimes the food was not up to par, but mostly, it was great...as someone else said, I miss the old lady who could be rude at times but you got what you ordered and in a timely manner. I ate there a few nights ago and the waiter who who couldnt get out of his way did not even know the menu, which is small...I looked up their site on google and the menu is the old one and is huge, but not the new one...it doesnt even have pork dishes...it is small and outrageously expensive...I have had no problem eating at the most expensive restaurants in the world, including the White Swan in Guangzhou (Canton to most), the city known in China as having the best food....this place was never the White Swan but the food measured up to it...the waiter knew the spill, We are under new management, but the cooks are the same. This might be true but they are under the new owners and their instructions, which in my opinion, are to go cheap...the hot tea did not come seeping in a pot but a cup with a tea bag...the mustard came in a plastic package and was no more Chinese than I am...it wasnt even hot...I want to feel it in my sinus...the soy sauce came in a pack also and I only got 2 of them, the same as the mustard...It was definitely the worst Chines food I have ever had in my life....from the most rural villages in China where they have seen few if any white people and have no refrigeration to cow town, Clovis New Mexico...this place would fail in Mexicali Mexico (which might not be fair, because when California passed so many anti-Chinese laws when we had no use for them after they built our railroads, many of them migrated south of the border and if you want the old cast iron pot Chinese-Californian cuisine from the old railway workers,, you have to go to Mexicali)...but I digress...The people sitting behind me at Hong Kong waited for over 40 minutes to be served and after one bite they refused to pay the bill and left...the young couple who were in the booth in front of me and who left and paid within moments of being served told me that they were never coming back and obviously did not eat what was put in front of them ...I have seen in some of these critical reviews where the management has offered these displeased people a free meal.....PLEASE DO NOT bother doing that for me, because you couldnt pay me enough to sit in there again unless their is a change in ownership!!

If you are a friend or patron of the old Hong Kong, dont bother. Ate there last nigh and sadly never again. The new management has apparently gone to no lengths to make this place appealing. First lets start with the atmosphere. You walk in and are immediately assaulted by the new, sterile look. Gone are the tables in the middle of the restaurant. Instead there is a new row of booths. The lighting is super bright which only highlights the awful decorations. I knew something was wrong when we waited for 10 minutes while the hostess was on the phone apologizing to a customer. We get seated and order. My friend ordered Curry Chicken and a small hot and sour soup. The Curry Chicken soup which he was served was inedible. I ordered a small egg drop soup, and sensing disaster, Chicken Fried Rice. Basic. The small soup comes in something slightly larger than a Chinese tea cup, it was thick and creamy and lukewarm. Three spoonfulls and youre done. The food comes out in what looks like black microwave dinner trays. They do artfully provide the lid. Ive had more tastier microwave dinners as this food have no taste whatsoever. I ordered Chicken Fried Rice and what I got was Green Pea Fried Rice with four pieces of chicken in it.This was one of the most dismal meals Ive ever had and will never go there again which is sad as this restaurant used to be one of my favorites, especially after a night of fun in Hillcrest.As former First Lady Nancy Reagan said, just say no.

Seems to have gone from B to F real quick. Oddly it was closed by the department of health and no one seems to know if the new (as required) owners are on it. Ads date back to 1982 and stay same stuff. I have never heard of a Chinese restaurant that could not source pork or pancakes. Yes, I had an order issue. Asked for a manager, not one. Asked for an owner contact, not one. For all the past failings of Hong Kong, it was never stellar but it was good solid Chinese food in the 1980 and 1990s. Yea, you wondered about the gato frito effect but it was much better than the food prior to the closure and much much better than the food and service (none) as to the allegedly new place. I have been coming to this place for about 8 years. The service here has never been top-notch but has recently taken a nose dive and tonight was the absolute straw that broke the camels back. The place was busy and so we were told that our food would take up to 30 minutes to come. It took about an hour and to make matters worse it would have taken longer had I not waved down the waiter and told him that our food had not come yet. On top of that the Hong Kong Fried Rice we received, was missing ingredients because the kitchen had apparently ran out of pork. One arrived looking nothing like the original Hong Kong dish I used to get and the other was shrimp (even though we had ordered chicken). The new server ladies were nice; they weren’t running the show and did their best. I ended up showing a picture of what one of the dishes was SUPPOSED to look like to one of the managers (I’m guessing). He said they wanted to serve good food that was delicious; to me that was never an issue. He also said they wanted to run a clean and sanitary establishment; again, to me I never saw that as a problem. *****Over 23 years, I’ve brought friends and fam here, gone on dates here, chowed down here after getting drunk in Hillcrest at 2am, and ordered take out from here. Yup, the service was lacking at times, but you know what? That’s everywhere; you’re gonna have some bad days mixed in with the good. There was mention of health department issues, but again you know what? If you go to the lot on the left you can park free for carry out, just have the cashier validate your ticket. They are always on point with the food, and the service is quick and reliable every time. The Chicken’s texture was funny; I’m still questioning myself whether it was over or undercooked. The waiters are your average rude old grandmas style, but I didn’t care since the food was inedible. My boyfriend grew up in San Diego and has long talked up this place which had “the best wonton soup” (“seriously it could cure illnesses” - his words not mine). Battling a sniffly nose, he declared it to be just what I needed and promised to pick some up for me on his way home from work. But when he came back with $50 worth of wonton soup, what we discovered was not the broth full of fresh veggies and crispy wontons but 3 containers of under seasoned broth, obviously from a package gyoza, and not a single wonton in sight.When we called to ask if they had forgotten any part of the meal, they blew us off before finally revealing they were under new management. Ok, so Im running some errands after work and decided to order some food for when Im done to go. I was about 5-10 mins away when I called, and the man on the phone had a VERY hard time understanding anything I tried to say. I walk in, totally not expecting it to be anywhere near done, to a very hostile environment. All the services staff literally started asking me what my name and phone number was over and over again. Which I answered each time. To this I was met with then essentially yelling at me that it was going to be another 15 minutes and insisting that I leave until its ready, something I was already planning to do because I needed to pick some food up from Whole Foods anyways but the way they were doing it was extremely rude. There were plenty of seats in the restaurant as I started to notice so I started to wonder why they would want me to leave so badly until the food was done.After I come back from my Whole Foods run I come into the man who questioned me a million and one times about my order and its verifications before not even remembering who I am. the waitress who took my order and then gave me the food was extremely rude and snarky.Nonetheless the food that Ive had here is always been good but the service has always been extremely questionable, if not downright bad. Used to be quite good and consistent. Indicates open until 3:00 a.m. so you could go after visiting a local bar or night club if not arriving too late... I wouldnt count on it though; make sure to get there before 2 am. I often am working late and call in a single entree to go by about 2 am to eat at home.Second time tonight they might pick up, the phone, but just hang up. Staff was rude. Asked for a lemonade because I saw it on the menu, server just said “we don’t have lemonade but we have sprite” like if it’s the same thing and I believe if you don’t have any you should probably mention it before you ask what we want to drink. Staying near Balboa Park from out of town and had a craving for Chinese food. The waiter was extremely rude and wanted us to order the food he wanted and for the quantity he wanted. After having a bit of a confusion over ordering, we ended up with a plate that we didn’t order. We told him we wanted rice for two and he still brought it for 3. Once we got our bill, we were told that since bringing that plate was his mistake we weren’t responsible for paying it. I have been going to Hong Kong now for somewhere around 5 years now. I first discovered this place after going to Pho on 5th after DJing in downtown. This place had an amazing selection food I can actually eat! Plus they do not use MSG in their cooking. Its definitely my favorite Chinese food Ive had since I was in Hong Kong in 2005. Ive basically compared all food here in the states since that place ever since. The staff there is nice, there is this one old dude in there who saw me so frequently he sat us and brought hot tea with our waters before we had a chance to even look at the menu. It always makes me feel good to know that businesses pay that much attention to the people who frequent their place.I would definitely recommend trying this place if you have not already. Its worth your trip and money. I order the Hong Kong Chow Fun over there or the crispy rice soup and sometimes both!

This is the type of place where your first impression after you walk in is that youre pretty sure this food is going to hurt. It is what it is, take it or leave it. Super frustrating. How can Onions be the main and almost only vegetable in your veggie lo mein??! I would have even just said thank you and passed if they were kind about the answers. Instead, i got nothing. What did get ordered by coworkers didnt look or smell that amazing either. My recommendation is to go half a block further to get way more flavorful food!

This is where I come for my orange chicken fix. It is crispy just how I like it. The wonton soup also makes me happy. It is warm and healing when I need a soup in my life. So bad. Food was absolutely mediocre and the service was very bad. And then afterwards, the waitress came over peddling a tip. After horrible service. Get out of here, horrible manners. If your service is bad, your tip is bad. Peddling for it is just pathetic. 100% will NEVER be back.

Decent Chinese food when youve been out drinking. I love the authenticity of the people working! It seems as they give zero Fs, but if you felt with all the drinks at the end of the night how would you be?

If I could give this establishment no stars I would. As I walked to the counter I realized I had forgotten my card (totally my fault btw). I asked if they were able to enter my card manually or if they had Apple Pay. Very rudely, the man raised his voice and said NO. Looking at me like I’m crazy. He exlaimed “ let me see your card “. I told him I didn’t have it. Then he said “you’re going home to get it?” I said NO. Him and the back of the house began speaking loudly and yelling back and forth until he waved his hand as if shooing me away. Saying NO. NO. NO.I NEVER leave reviews, yet this place left a bad taste in mouth and I haven’t even tried the food. Beware of anger going into making your food. Better yet stay FAR AWAY from this place. Cross the street and go to RAMEN IZAKAYA OUAN instead. They gladly entered my card manually.

Stephanie (she told me her name was but I think she was lying-older lady, Asian) was very disrespectful!!! Told me she couldn’t make my order the way I wanted it. Plus I had the feeling she was racist!! She was rude from the moment I walked into the door.
