This is an absolutely amazing Chinese option located in Davis. I was actually on my way to another one Google recommended, but past Hunan on on the way. I decided to walk in there instead because I was extremely hungry. I dont regret my decision one bit. Great food served VERY fast, and they gave me a free bowl of ice cream after paying for the meal!

This place is super authentic and has a ton of spicy dishes. We got the dry pot and it was filled with so many different varieties of meats and veggies. Very salty and spicy though. The wintermelon soup is very homey. Overall, enjoyed it a lot and would like to come back when im craving hunan Chinese food.

Its one of those Chinese restaurants that are best for casual gathering with family and friends. The food comes with decent quality and style. The waitresses are very friendly. Id be happy to be there again next time I visit UC Davis campus.

I am writing this on behalf of my parents. My parents are in their sixties. They came to visit me from China. This restaurant happened to be the first restaurant they stopped by. Thinking that I was too busy to cook or eat, they ordered a take-out for me. After sitting there for half an hour without being helped, a waiter informed them that the dish they ordered was unavailable, but they could pick another one if they wanted. My parents revised their order and waited for another half an hour. Eventually they got the take-out, but it was lukewarm and oily. No apologies at all. Hope this review would help!

The food I ordered was the Hunan special. I expected it to be fantastic because it came highly recommended but it fell flat. First, there was only one waiter taking all of the orders so he had a hard time taking care of all of the take out and sit down orders. Next, when he brought out my soup it was luke warm. That all is not a good sign. The egg roll was piping hot and decent, but the main dish, chicken and spicy veggies, had no distinctive flavor. I could tell that the food was fresh and healthy, but it was not delicious. So, although it did not meet my expectations, I would definitely go back if I am dying to hacmve Chinese food and there are no other options.

We decided to have Chinese food this evening and the energy around this place seemed pleasant and calm. There are pictures all over the windows to give a glimpse into what choices you have as well as the printed menu taped on the window. Once you decide what you would like, there is a table set up in the entrance with hand sanitizer and a white bell to press for service. We ordered the Broccoli Beef and Mongolian Beef to go as the pandemic restricts any indoor/outdoor service at the current time. We waited in the car and the food was brought out to us. We ate it in the car. It was good, however a little light on flavor. The Mongolian Beef was loaded with red chili peppers be warned!

So good! The food is delicious. We are from Oklahoma, and this stuff is just flat out delicious. We got egg rolls, sesame chicken, white/fried rice, and beef. All of it was good. Its rare at home we would go to some sort of asian cuisine and like all of it. But this place got it!The free tea pushed it over the top for me, just awesome!P.S. my wife says its the best fried rice shes ever had

Been here several times during the past few years. Generally satisfied with the food. Was really disappointed today because their outdoor poster said in Chinese “20% off spicy fish” so we decided to try it, but at check out they still charged the full price. When I pointed out the discount they said it was from February and refused to honor it. The 20% off poster’s been there for a while so they’ve been charging everyone full price coz not everyone read Chinese or people just don’t notice.

The food is good, authentic. Service is not bad.But the place is dirty. And if you pay a visit to the restroom you should be concerned. The door is dirty, it smells urine. There are flies flying between the dining area and the restrooms…I may pay a visit again after half year or so to see any improvements and update my review accordingly.

Large servings of food at a reasonable price, tastes ok. We got the spicy fish fillets, spicy pork intestines, and the gizzard. The first two dishes were pretty greasy, and the meat and veggies were soaked in a sticky soup. Not the cleanest place to dine, the tables and water jars felt pretty worn out.

I have never been so disappointed in a Chinese restaurant I ordered general chicken n veggie fried rice to go, when I got home I realized there was no chicken … only the skin literally not one piece of meat. Then I go to eat the veggie fried rice and it was full of bean sprouts I’m not opposed to a few in there but this dish was more bean sprouts then rice.

Place is big and they have a pretty wide variety of good, which they serve in huge amounts for a fair price. With the dinner special I almost bursted! The food was yummy and I liked all the dishes I tried. This place is always full and that is a clear sign that it must be good. The atmosphere is not the best but that is the least important thing.

Food was excellent, authentic Chinese. Priced reasonably too, and portions are generous. My sons loved the crab cheese wontons and the chow mein was tasty too.Dont expect much of a fuss service wise, but they are quick and want to rotate tables. I only order from the American menu, so that’s all I can speak to. I’ve liked every dish I’ve gotten: broccoli beef, general chicken, Kung Pao chicken, pepper beef, cashew chicken, and lots more. All of their appetizers are great, but the crab wontons, egg rolls, and hot and sour soup (my fav!) are our usuals. We’ve tried different take out places during COVID, and Hunan is still our favorite.The lunch special is only rivaled by Yeti (also in downtown Davis) in term or price, volume of food, and taste. Post-lunch food coma guaranteed, so order at your own risk.Don’t expect much in terms of table service. They leave a pitcher of water at your table and bring the food. That’s about it. I know that going in and adjust my tip and expectations accordingly. Though, if you go semi-regularly, they will learn who you are and get a little more chatty. One of the gentlemen remembers my order even if I haven’t gone in months and always pokes fun at my husband and tells him he can’t have any of my order ;)

Ive come here two times with my boyfriend and both times we received the most terrible service anyone has ever received. The food was phenomenal but the staff was not friendly and was actually somewhat aggressive. Their hours on the door are not coinciding with the hours the cooks leave. I would just go here for the food because my boyfriend really loves Hunan. The only aversion that I have with this place is the bad customer service.

I use to come here all the time for lunch. Really affordable lunch menu, especially for financially challenged college students. I usually got their cashew chicken, fried rice and sweet and sour soup lunch choice. Filled me up and sometimes i would have enough to take back (most of the time i would just man up and finish it all though :D ) They remodeled and moved locations a few years ago so the place is bigger and new. But I miss the old location that was up stairs. Reason why? Because my buddy and I would sit by the window and watch people fail at parallel parking. I didnt realize how horrible people are at parrallel parking. So not only did we have tasty affordable food, we had hilarious entertainment! That is what I call 2 birds with 1 tasty stone!

We stopped in for takeout as it was next to our hotel, they do offer takeout but make sure you are not in a hurry. We were given menus then completely ignored for a span of nearly ten minutes, when a member of the wait staff finally addressed us we were made to feel as an inconvenience. I cant comment on the food, we tired of waiting and went elsewhere before our order was even taken. I wont return, nor would I recommend it

Hunan is the best, most reliable restaurant in Davis and Ill explain why.DISCLAIMER: I have eaten at Hunan at least 100 times in my time attending UC Davis and have only tried 2 different meals, the General Tso Chicken lunch special and the Walnut Chicken lunch special.Allow me to paint a picture for you - you wake up on a Friday morning, probably hungover from whatever college party or bar theme night you graced with your presence last night, wearily trying to connect the dots between blurry memories and drunk texts. Your body hurts and your stomach is screaming to be fed, but cooking seems like a lot of effort without the willpower to back it up.A thought sparks up in the back of your mind... Hunan?You send out a group text to all of the homies with just that one word.In about half an hour, everyone who is feeling the exact same way you are stumbles into the restaurant. No need to look at the menu, as soon as you sit down you tell the waiter what your preferred lunch special item is and your food is on the table in less than 5 minutes.The lunch special: a steaming hot plate of rice, noodles, meat and/or veggies with a soup or salad on the side for about $7. More food than any person should justifiably eat in one sitting unless they are a bodybuilder or perhaps a sumo wrestler. And you get unlimited Chinese tea included on your table. And dont forget about the orange slice, the cheese wonton, and the fortune cookies. In a time where you can always expect to dish out over $10 for any given meal, this is a bargain and a half.Thats what Hunan is. Cheap, fast, reliable, plentiful, delicious.Its a holy grail for many students on weekday mornings from 11am - 3pm.There are some negatives. Was working construction very close to the restaurant and saw the foot traffic going in so the crew thought we would get an order to go. I went in an ordered and while waiting by the front door in the waiting area I noticed a dead roach under my chair and immediately lost my appetite. Since I had already paid and did not want to make a scene I took my order and left. I still tried the fried rice after close inspection, but I didnt think it was that good. Now we were working close enough to see that someone had been sweeping up prior to there opening that day and you would have thought 4 feet from the front door would have been a priority. Guess not. I will not be going back.

The waitress ( the older lady) was SO RUDE she didnt give us enough place mats and was so impatient with us and had such a bad attitude we didnt do or say anything mean and we werent even rude to her so her attitude was uncalled for But MORE IMPORTANTLY WE FOUND A BUG IN OUR WAR WONTON SOUP! Mind you the soup had literally 2 shrimp in it! Yuck! Ugh We were exhausted after a long day and thought this place would cheer us up with its usual amazing food and hot tea BUT NO it made the night worse and we could not wait to get out of there! One time, I was there and waiting for my food, when a small bird of some kind came in an sat across from me. Im just kidding hahaha, it wasnt a bird it was a boy, silly auto correct. anyway this boy came in and sat across from me, and since I wasnt expecting anyone, I decided to Ignore him. I finished my meal, payed my bill and left. and since then have not been back, in fact I have not been anywhere. I cant get my self to get up and go out of my house. Highly recommend the spicy hotpot and rice bowl here. Judging from the portion size, the price/performance ratio is quite high, much cheaper than Chengdu style, and spicy enough. The environment is nice, a place worthy of being used as a dining hallFood is spicy and hot enough. The environment is clean. Employees are nice. I will eat there every week.

I have to complain, has it become like this after not eating Hunan for a few months? The amount of cumin mutton is obviously reduced and then it is super salty. The more you chew, the saltier it becomes. Why put ginger in the spicy and sour shredded potatoes? Anyway, it’s weird.
