Not whats with all the high rates. The place is big and spacious but could use some updates. The food were not that great. I ordered shrimp papaya salad... with very few shrimps! Spicy chicken with white rice was mushy. The combination pho was terrible.

Weve been coming here for years and weve literally never had a bad meal. Everything on their menu is delicious but our faves are always the pho noodle soup, the combination clay pot rice, and shaking beef! Its making me hungry thinking about it! Theres a reason this place is always busy! We cant even eat at other Vietnamese restaurants because it just cant compare. Lol this place is the best for sure.

Everything we order here is always good. From rice plates to soups to appetizers. You cant go wrong here. The only issue is parking where you sometimes have to drive around the block some. But youll always leave full and satisfied.

I had the pleasure of visiting Huong Tra restaurant with some of my friends who have been here many times before. The place was packed even at 2:30 PM on a weekday, when we visited! Seating took 5 minutes. Locals know this is a really good spot.We had #44a, Grilled sliced pork with pork sausages and #5, crispy pork and shrimp pancake and a couple of other dishes. EXCELLENT and FLAVORFUL!

Simply fabulous. Look at the photo I attached and show it to your waiter, and point at the different dishes. We spent $46 on dinner and had good to take home after eating like ravenous wolves.

This place was excellent. Its kind of hidden among fast food joints, and the only Vietnamese place around.The meat in my entree was charbroiled, instead of pan fried. The overall presentation and volume was great for the price and size bowl.Weird part was although they appeared to be very clean in the dining area, the individually wrapped chopsticks were sticky.

Huong Tra will always be the standard in my eyes. They’re still alive and kicking despite the pandemic and I hope they thrive once indoor dining is back.Super great food at great prices! (Well I do think their ban mihs are more on the expensive end to justify the quantity but the flavor is there for sure. I’d ideally pay $4 for one but it’s $5.75 =\)

UPDATE YOUR HOURS!! I ran here believing I had time to order my dish just to be told oh no boohoo were closed. Some ppl use the Google Maps platform to be aware of restaurant hours and it’s extremely frustrating to be told that the kitchens closed. SORRY! Make sure your hours are reflective of your closing times so people don’t get excited thinking they could eat your establishment...

Food was so good, I couldnt help myself and take pictures before we ate it. Pho was very fragrant, slightly lacking in meat. #30 was appetizing. Beef cubes and grilled pork was money. They are a little heavy handed in the fish sauce but it is so umami. Rice served wasnt the best (appeared to be from bottom of the pot). Even with all these criticisms, I still would give them 4 stars. Its a no frill eating joint. Price is on point. If you are craving Vietnamese and youre in El Cerrito, its worth a try.

On Valentines Day ‘19 Huong Tra Restaurant was filled to capacity with a line of customers stretching from the cash register to the door. There was a 30 minute wait for the Catfish Platter, however once served with a side order of steamed rice it was simply delicious. I would highly recommend for a authentic Vietnamese Food experience :-)

Service is awful. They cater to the whites more than any other ethnic group that comes here. Sat down for more than 30min and a few couples white came in sat down and got their food right away. Food is bland. Pho had no taste of authentic pho. Not coming back

Came here to dine in at 8:07pm the front people were extremely nice they made me sit. Another old lady came and started yelling that I can’t eat there. Fantastic food! This location is very busy but still manages to have food ready in a reasonable time. -- even when running late. Be mindful -- they deal with A LOT of customers!! Theres no need to be rude to them; it saddens me to see unjustifiably angry customers talk to them badly. They are very nice, sometimes curt, but dont read into it.I am a regular! The food is great :-)

The prices increased significantly but the quality stayed the same or got worse in some instances. What was a shocker for me is that they even starting charging for peppers! Prices have increased without updating their menu! We order 2 bowls of pho (showed as $10.50 each on menu) but noticed $32 bill which means they charged us $14.8 each + Tax of course. The funny thing is that they didnt update the menus ! So if we knew pho was $16, we wouldnt eat there for sure

I love a good Vietnamese noodle soup and this place came highly recommended by a native to the area. This place was outstanding. Be sure to try the crispy shrimp. They come on a bed of grilled onions, shreds of ginger and jalapeno. Ive visited twice and Ive tried the spicy beef noodle soup and the seafood pho. Both were great! Our server Lam went above and beyond. He only works on Saturdays and Sundays. But he made our visit even better with his hospitality.

Food was ok. Service was horrible!! My sister took us there for dinner. Waitress took forever to take our order. Then, she brought our appetizers out AFTER our main dishes, dropped off our food and never came back to check on us. My sister tried to get the attention of another worker to get our check and a box for our left overs. That worker cut her off mid sentence and kept walking, waving her question off. We waited, thinking he would send out our waitress. 10 minutes and nothing. My sister went up to the cashier counter to ask for the check and a box and was told to sit down they would take care of it. 10 more minutes...nothing. She finally went up and said she wanted to pay now. The waitress came out and rung her up...then tried to add $18 on for her too, claiming they do that automatically if the group is 6 or more. (We had 6 adults and a toddler) my sister insisted she did not deserve $18 tip because she did nothing but drop off our food. My sister was very upset and embarrassed that she brought us to this restaurant for dinner. Wont go back again.

The 2nd time around, the waitress recommended mi quang. It was my first time having mi quang so I didnt know what to expect. The bowl came and it was loaded with lots of good stuff. I really like the fried onion, and basically everything about the dish. So good! I would certainly recommend this dish! It was under the stir fry section, but it was basically not fried at all. It has some sauce but not too soupy.

In addition to the standard beef and chicken noodle soup and rice plates, they do have stir fried noodles and Beef chow fun, but my suggestion is to stick with the noodle soups and rice. Their Vietnamese style rice plates are authentic, but they do use a hint of MSG in their food. Their beef soup are very comforting especially on a cold day and they do give ample meat. The portions are decent size.Their salt and pepper fried shrimp are flavorful; they use very decent medium+ size shrimp.Their price are very reasonable, but usually theyre pretty packed during the lunch hour.

This restaurant is in a strip mall along San Pablo Avenue, Richmond, totally non descript, youd never know it existed except by word of mouth (or TripAdvisor). The food here is very good for the price, which is why it never lacks for customers. Come here if you are cold and want a steaming hot bowl of Pho! Ahh, the broth is always tasty and authentic (unlike other budget Vietnamese, where the broth can taste like dishwater). Try the Shrimp & Papaya appetizer salad with minced peanuts. The sweet-sour-salty balance is always right and there is an interesting crisp vegetable that looks like a penne pasta that I dont know the name of. There is another ingredient, also of unknown origin due to my ignorance, that is crunchy and gives great texture to the salad, like a crouton. Yummy! Another good dish is the catfish claypot. The (bony) fish is in a caramelized sweet-salty sauce and is good for spooning over white rice. My favorite go-to when Im in the East Bay and want something easy, cheap and non pizza.

Dont like to be negative but the only positive info I can give after my visit was its inexpensive...the taro smoothie we ordered only came at the end of our meal after I got up and had to walk to the register to find my waiter talking story with another employee...we also had to ask twice for a pot of tea...this is budget food with budget service.. when my wife went to pay our check I stayed at our table and asked for a container for our remaining food.. a new waitress threw the container on a table near the register where my wife was while our food and I were at the other end of the restaurant.. I guess my wife was supposed to wait on us?The food is still the most important aspect of any restaurant visit..Incompetent, rude or non-existent service can still be forgiven by great food. I had the combination pha.. it combined the worst aspects of poorly made broth salty and weak ...other than salt not much to taste. I could find only two small pieces of tendons even though I asked to substitute more tendon for the meatballs I didnt want ..I was charged for the substitution but didnt get extra tendon.. yes Id only go back if it was late and I couldnt make it somewhere else and I was desparate to eat at the end of a long work day. Well maybe I wouldnt go there even then...sorry I wont be back..

I love the food but I have been there one to many times and I have seen how rude the staff is to their customers. They ignore certain people and when trying to get their attention after 15 mins of the staff ignoring you you finally have to get up and ask for help. 1st time visit on a friends recommendation, also my first time eating Vietnamese food. The cashier was extremely helpful and explained many of the dishes since I was unfamiliar with them, I was very appreciative of her kindness. I dont know if its because of my lack of experience with Vietnamese food, but I wasnt crazy about the food. One of the dishes I expected to be tasty since I like spicy food, it was spicy chicken with garlic rice. It was decent but thought it lacked actual flavor and rice was a bit clumpy. The 2nd dish I tried was an interesting mix of warm vermicelli noodles with pork that was pretty dry, and cold vegetables with a cut up eggroll on top. I didnt care for this very much, although the noodles were good, everything else not too tasty for me, and didnt like the fish oil sauce that came with. Like I said I dont know if its my lack of familiarity with the food or if its really considered good by those who are familiar with Vietnamese cuisine? Im willing to give it one more try, next time will try the noodle soup (Pho) Wish me luck....

Its peaceful inside, a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle that San Pablo Avenue out front symbolizes. They have plenty of space and tables and chairs to sit and enjoy coffee and a chat with a friend. Take a deep breath, and savor for a few minutes a place without WiFi. Maybe it was a restaurant once, but now Im reminded more of a world where there was never not a pot of coffee warm and waiting for the next visitor to drop in. It helps if you are the type to occasionally succumb to the lure of a soft, fresh donut even if it might be, um, Against Medical Advice. There must be more on the menu, but I go into a trance state when Im around good coffee and donuts - I have, though, managed to notice that they have pots labeled decaf. Other useful tidbits are that they are open around the end of the traditional workday - heck yeah, if the day has brought a bunch of physical work Ive EARNED my donut and a moment to sit down, pause, and caffeinate for the next stage. Also, no matter what time Ive come in so far, the coffee is never lukewarm, stale, or burnt - never a case of rolling the dice. Maybe Ill see you there.

The San Francisco Bay Area is loaded with low-priced neighborhood restaurants for the various far eastern cuisines. They vary in details and quality, but one can usually order any of the regular classic dishes and anticipate pretty well the dish that will be served.But Huong Tra is special! It isnt fancy, has no particular signature dishes -- just the regular Vietnamese fare -- and as other reviewers have noted, quality of service can be unreliable. (Theyre always busy.) And every dish Ive tried has been true to what I ordered and what I expected.But every dish at Huong Tra has been the _best_ example of that dish. Everything one orders is just a little bit better example of that dish than one would expect, and sometime a lot better example. Every dish is _exciting_ and more flavorful than one expects. And it isnt just added pepper -- every dish tastes like it should, just a little bit better than it should. One can always get a fine culinary experience at a high-end area restaurants like Chez Panisse or Oliveto -- and these establishments have their place -- but a low price restaurant with reliably exciting food is a treasure. The food here is very good for the price, which is why it never lacks for customers. Come here if you are cold and want a steaming hot bowl of Pho! Ahh, the broth is always tasty and authentic (unlike other budget Vietnamese, where the broth can taste like dishwater). Try the Shrimp & Papaya appetizer salad with minced peanuts. The sweet-sour-salty balance is always right and there is an interesting crisp vegetable that looks like a penne pasta that I dont know the name of. There is another ingredient, also of unknown origin due to my ignorance, that is crunchy and gives great texture to the salad, like a crouton. Yummy! Another good dish is the catfish claypot. The (bony) fish is in a caramelized sweet-salty sauce and is good for spooning over white rice. My favorite go-to when Im in the East Bay and want something easy, cheap and non pizza.

Hate restaurant waiters that will ask you to give them the tip in cash. Lady 1st of all you dont deserve a tip coz you are rude. We kept on waiving to order and was ignored several times and when I asked you to make sure my chicken wings are extra crispy your face tells me Im bothering you.I had to ask for my check 2x and took you so long just the check out.But my husband was being nice and still gave you a good tip.
