I tipped a low amount because it’s all I can afford as a college student and the owner waited until my food was ice cold and my friend was finished eating to bring me a poor excuse for unraveled sushi and ramen. He yelled at me and acted insulted that I didn’t tip him for his unprofessional and childlike service. One star all around.

A hidden sushi gem for sure. Best part is it wasnt crowded and they stayed open late just for us to finish our meal and talk. Felt really special. Sushi was good and fairly priced. Was impressed with the ngiri.

A small sushi place run by a family. Rolls were great. I cant say nigiri sushi was the best. We also enjoyed other dinner plates like Katsu Curry and small dishes.

Horrible! Horrible! PLEAAAAASE STAY AWAY from this Horrible Place. We arrived at 4:15 pm ordered right away. Get this Ladies and Gents, my wife and I ordered TWO ITEMS, yes not 5, not 3.... TWO ITEMS... We didnt order appetizers oh my goodness... and we waited for almost TWO HOURS and we left with our table and stomach still empty. Although we are pretty hungry, we like to give restaurants fair chance thats why we waited but then when they dont even check on you to make sure youre okay or at least apologize for the wait we decided to leave.So when my wife went up to talk to the server and told her that we can no longer wait. She didnt even checked if the order is ready, beg us to stay or at least apologize sincerely. She just said okay cancel order. Quite unprofessional and rude.My advice to them is... If they cant handle a lot of customers then just let them know right away that dining in is no longer available. At least customer is aware that the wait is going to be long and if he/she wants to come back later they can, or if they decided to wait.. well its on them. Believe me, if they only did this system I wouldnt even give them a bad review. I wouldnt just be fine with it.I also noticed that the Itamae (Sushi Chef) just prepares food that are to go. They dont know how to prioritize orders! Again this is a horrible place, we will never go back and will never recommend. If I could give 0 star I would....

Still the best!I havent been here in a couple of years so I was curious to see if they changed but to my delight, theyre still delicious as ever! Took my parents here last month and they loved it as much as I did.The chicken karaage was crispy and tender. The pork curry was just the right balance of salty and sweet. The tempura batter is very light so you actually taste the vegetables (the way its supposed to be so youre not just biting into thick batter). The miso soup is heavenly and the owners wife offered us several more bowls of it since my mom liked it so much, without charging (unlike some places).Ive never had the saba shio (mackerel) here before but gave it a try. It was probably the best mackerel Ive had any where. Wasnt greasy or too salty, just grilled to perfection and even the skin was crispy and delicious!You wont regret coming here.

Yum! Loved the chicken katsu curry. My wife got the karaage...never had this anywhere before so I dont have anything to compare to but it sure was tasty. Also, unique & fun ambience with lots of pop culture art and eclectic music.

This place came recommended to my wife and I, so we popped in for lunch. First off, amazing cozy vibe with some great music and artwork adorning the dining area. Service was prompt and friendly, and the menu compact, yet with plenty variety. Our food arrived in a timely manner, and was absolutely a treasure - a perfect amount, and expertly prepared and displayed. The tuna was absolutely perfect, as was the shrimp, soup, and even salad. We will definitely be back!

Take out experience is great. Food is consistantly high quality. Always on time. The Japanese curry is amazing 👏 sushi is fresh.Only dined in one time. Dine in experience was a bit slow, but this is a small business and it looks like its just the owner and one waitress so I dont really have a problem with waiting a bit. When im hangry thats a whole other story... Decor is fun. The order form was a bit confusing as we accidentally ordered hand rolls (1 rolled up item) vs cut rolls (8 cut up rolls).

Let me clearly separate the “Sushi” and the non-“sushi” menu. The “sushi” is okay to good depending on your tastes. Admittedly, my last sushi there was okay about a year ago, but nothing to brag or complain about. If they only served sushi I’d give a solid 3 to 4 Star rating. The problem is the rest of their menu, and the strangely eclectic if not eccentric ambiance which makes just being there... uncomfortable.The rest of the menu tasted blandly prepared by a cook just going through the motions.... Ive had katsudon and katsu curry both were cringeworthy and constituted my last visit there ever. It’s a shame since they are actually run by Japanese and should know better but don’t seem to taste their food or care anymore.

Been going to Hyuga for the better part of 9+ years. Lots of options in the Carlsbad area, but this continues to be my go-to. Besides the award-winning sushi:- Atmosphere is low key- Small sushi-bar seats approximately 5, max capacity about 15-20.- Service is attentive, friendly, and genuine.- Every wall, you’ll see the owner’s interests from Anime to Heavy Metal. Always fun to look & learn.

Kuro is the chef and owner of this little jem, we believe he’s going on his 16th year. GOOD FOR HIM and his passion for putting art in creating beautiful sushi. The proportions of fish to rice is perfect. Remember going into some Sushi bars with 2/3 rice and the fish is cut paper thin for higher price because it’ some fancy deco. This is Kuro’s second home, rock n roll posters, great music and fresh fish. Orange Sunrise; creamy delicious quail eggs, salmon and smelt egg, melt in your mouth. El Fuegio is spicy, but not the hottest, just enough to make it one of our favorites. Rainbow Roll is a sampler of many different fresh fish and that’s the difference between other sushi bars, this fish is fresh and created with a passion. THANKS KURO for serving us for ten years. btw, he’s getting busier every month, so try to make it on Tuesday- Thursday if you don’t want to wait.

The sushi was okay. The sizes of the rolls were both smaller and more pricey than other sushi restaurants around the area. The lighting was also very dim. Overall good service. Wouldnt go there again as there are better places around.

Never fails, always the best! Ive been coming here for many years thanks to my coworkers from almost a decade ago. Trust me when I say, hands down this is the best sushi you can get in the state. Ive been to the bay area and tried many places down south. This place is second to NONE.

This has become our favorite go-to sushi place. Small, casual place thats easy to get to. The chef is great, fish is always fresh and really good quality. Albacore special roll and Volcano roll are delicious!

Fantastic small sushi place. Menu has some great options. Especially loved the special salmon roll. Miso soup was also great. Service was great. Food came out fast. They even give you free ice cream if its your birthday. Prices also were very fair

Im not a big sushi eater but my family is. I happened to be in the area and picked up a couple of dishes- crunchy shrimp and scallop dynamite rolls. My family devoured the food in minutes. I will definitely visit again soon!

While I do enjoy the ramen here funny enough I go here for the tonkatsu ramen. Is it the best bowl of ramen in San Diego? No, but I cannot find a better bowl in Escondido or San Marcos. I always say dont go to a sushi place for ramen and dont go to a ramen place for sushi but Hyuga delivers on both and i love the decor.

If you live around San Marcos, this place is pretty convenience to get good Japanese food. The Sushi is pretty close to the real one, not so pricey and other meals are also nice. I recommend you there when you dont have time to drive to Convoy.Sometimes the service is slow tho, especially when the restaurant is busy...

Amazing! Authentic sushi. Very small but it gives it such a great vibe. Love the Anime and rock & roll posters. Music to match! Heard some rock songs and some songs I recognized from anime I have watched. Amazing staff. Awesome sushi chef. DEFINITELY try the soft shell crab salad that has the fried crab. YUM! And the biker roll! Everything is so fresh and amazing. They were really helpful with my 1 year old we brought and she ate a ton of gyoza. I wont ever get sushi anywhere else again! Found my new spot!

After reading some of the bad reviews I had to say something. This place has the best sushi and best rice in all of north county. The people that left bad review are ridiculous! The only reviews they have done were for fast food mexican joints and walmarts. What Im saying is, they think panda express is five star japanese restaurant. Hyuga captured my heart. Get the biker roll, toro, and any sushi really, its all so good. Will come back to try everything on the menu. You might have to wait but its well worth it.

This place gets 5 stars not because of the food, but because of the staff... but the food is absolutely a 4 star plus also! I recommend the curry... it’s fantastic, very big portions and very good price! Whenever my colleagues from Japan visit they always want lunch here... so that’s an example of all you need to know!

This is one of the few places that I know of that uses real wasabi and I love the setting. Its nice and quiet. If youre not in a hurry and want a chef that takes his time to make great sushi, this is the place. Its my favorite sushi place.

Im a regular here! I usually have the agedashi tofu and either their lunch combos or their udons. Theyre very consistent in how they make their food so if you like it, youll probably enjoy it the next time you come too!

Poor service and communications. Girlfriend and I arrived around dinner time. Short wait before we were seated. No big deal. Took a while to order again not huge, they came back immediately with our Asahis. Then the real wait began. Sat there for 45 mins without another interaction with anyone. Tried to order another beer, no one paid attention. Tried to ask where order was and waitress ignored us. Had tables come in after us, eat and leave and we were still there, no food, no edemame. Nothing. Finally went to counter to pay for beers because they wouldnt come to table. They said order would be done soon.... Never again.
