This is my second visit and it won’t be my last.The food is incredible. Great nigiri, fresh and very reasonably priced.On this occasion I ordered the nigiri and the tempura udon. The two other dishes were complementary, by the very nice chef at the bar. The complimentary dishes were delicious.The service could’ve been better. I feel like the waiters on both visits haven’t been very attentive.Great food and it’s very reasonably priced.

Saturday night dinner. They are pretty busy but have plenty of seating. We always order too much but finished everything.My favorite was the salmon carpaccio-tuna tartare. It was supposed to be mine but my son ate half of it.Miso eggplant was good.Chicken karaage was good too.Oysters were the larger ones. We prefer the smaller sized ones.Sushi rolls were good.I would come back for the carpaccio/tartare!

There was not too many options for Asian food in the neighborhood, and we were glad to find this Japanese restaurant.The service good, and the atmosphere was great as well. The food quality was not bad, but the seasoning was a little off (maybe affected by American food?) from the authentic Japanese food. Perhaps the sushi would be better.

This was my first time eating at Ichi-Riki Japanese Restaurant, located in Monterey, California. I was in the mood for some fresh Sushi, and this restaurant was highly recommended by Google.I decided to give it a try and wasnt disappointed. I had the Dragon and California Rolls. Both rolls were made to order, and the ingredients tasted fresh.If I find myself back in Monterey, I would definitely eat here again. If there was any drawbacks to this establishment it would be that the seating felt a little cramped, but other than that the food is worth a try.

After trying couple of japanese resto around I must say this is the most authentic one. From the food, service and the atmosphere of the resto everything is so good. My husband and I loved the unagi donburi and nabeyaki udon!!! お勧め!!!

Ichi Riki is the oldest Japanese restaurant in the county. It’s also an authentic Japanese restaurant that is Japanese owned. The restaurant was recently sold because the owner passed away and her family sold the restaurant. The new owner is cleaning up the restaurant and slowly doing some renovations. The customer service is alright and the food is great. Price is reasonable and portions are generous. There’s 2 small parking lots owned by the restaurant but one of them is constantly packed because of the stereo shop and glass shop. Street parking is horrible. Family friendly restaurant.

This place was amazing! The food was fresh and delicious. It seems like a traditional fare with few deep fried or cream cheese dishes. I loved the freshness of the fish and the caliber of the rolls. Our service was amazing and consistent. Our favorite was the quail eggs. We love these and these ones were fresh and presented well. Highly recommend!

Delicious food! We ordered specials of the day, which were ocean trout and local halibut. The fish was extremely fresh. Sweet and plump. Very well done tempura. The server we had was very helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. It was such a warm dinner experience. Would definitely comeback if we stayed longer in Seaside.

My family loves Ichi-Riki! The food is always consistently delicious and the people are very friendly. My Husband has actually been going there since he was a baby. Its nice to see that now they have a website and a new fresh menu. We used to live in Seaside, now we are about a 30 min drive away. Wish we could go everyday!

We visited after reading a local newspaper article about the change of ownership and the fact this restaurant is the oldest Japanese restaurant in the Monterey Bay Area. We sat at the sushi bar and ordered the nigiri and sushi roll sampler and the combination box with teriyaki salmon and tonkatsu. They accidentally brought veggie tempura instead of tonkatsu but they were able to correct it and left the veggie tempura for us. The veggie tempura was so good! The nigiri and sushi was super fresh. The vibe felt cozy and authentic, and the customer service was exceptional. There were a lot of regular customers coming in and chatting with the sushi chefs and servers. The food also reasonably priced for the quality. We loved all aspects of the experience and will definitely be back very soon!

They allow dogs without them being serviced dogs. Put sashimi plates down with no explanation of what chefs choice fish was . Cuts of sushi in triangles? Charged for real wasabi. Just a weird sushi experience. We went because we heard they remodeled. Bathrooms were so bad just held it.To me looked the same. Will not be going back. A friend recommended this place to us and its a must-try! I ordered the Jo combination platter, and my husband got the Deluxe one. The complementary miso soup was good, not salty. The salad was good, too! The nigiri and rolls were excellent 💯😋 We also got fried gyoza and it was so crunchy and delicious! Authentic. Friendly staff. Fairly priced. Large portions. Good ambiance. Overall is two thumbs up 👍👍 Highly recommended.

Stopped in for dinner on a Monday evening. Fairly busy place for a Monday. Staff was friendly and took our orders and brought us the green tea we had ordered. I ordered the teriyaki chicken and tempura bento. The miso soup was very good as a first course. The presentation of the bento was good as well as the taste and food temperature of the food. The tempura coating seemed a little thinner than I am use to, but was very good. The chicken was well cooked and covered in teriyaki sauce. I have not eaten here in many years and found that the meal was as good as it was back then. Worth a visit if your in the mood for a Japanese meal.

We were in the tatami room for two and ordered omakase. The chef is extremely creative and takes very good care of you! The overall service is top notch. Last time I ate here was like 15 to 20 years ago as a kid and it was the first Japanese restaurant I ever had. Glad theyre still around since theyre the reason I ended up learning Japanese and studying their culture. So I do have a nostalgia bias Ill try to refrain from.Simple CriteriaFood: 4Service: 5Atmosphere: 5I would say mostly everything was perfectly seasoned, but minimally leaning towards the bland side. The dashi used as bases for their miso and tentsuyu could use a touch more umami. Chicken teriyaki, not too sweet, perfectly cooked tender with nice searing from a seasoned grill. I prefer the lighter salad dressing they use over other places. Tempura isnt overly rolled in batter flakes which makes the perfect cuts of veggies nicely pronounced rather than 50/50 food to batter mix (more like a 75/25 ratio enough batter to hold and soak up tentsuyu for flavor). Only issue we came up on was my wifes dish which had cuts of tonkatsu with some sections of tendon-like textures.Main pros: the amount of food received for the price far surpasses many other places. Its better than fair value. Also, their menu isnt riddled with fusion style options that triple the menu size(if thats your thing look elsewhere). Its closer to a simple and traditional Japanese menu (1 sheet two sides in clear cover) with just a few options for other traditional asian recipes. The sushi chef (possibly an owner? Didnt ask) is the perfect host. He provides a very upbeat, welcoming, and professional service all the way up to the send-off. Atmosphere is simply relaxing at the bar. Come in, get your whopper plates of food, relax or chat as needed, then be on your way fully satisfied.

Pros-large portions, great food. We had the combination beef teriyaki and tempura. Also had the California roll and spicy tuna roll which had large pieces of tuna. Food arrived quickly and was hot and tasty. Prices were reasonable. Also, lots of off street parking.Cons- no dipping sauce for the tempura and server didnt bring us tea as requested.Will definitely come back again.

For great fresh delicious sushi and sashimi on the Peninsula - try Ichi-Riki. The new management situation is bringing positive changes. Ichi-Riki has upped their game in a restaurant landscape challenged by macro issuesThe furnishings and decor haven’t changed - I’m okay with that because resources are being focused on food, and hiring the right staff to achieve a customer experience that will bring them back again.It’s the untouchables that further hooked me on top of the food. The restaurant’s energy-level is high, the intensity of customer service is very strong, the responsiveness even on a busy day is very good. Ichi Riki is now under new ownership. The young man from the Chrystal Fish restaurant is now the new owner. The Sushi is good and customer service was attentive and friendly. I have been coming to Ichi Riki for over 40 years now. The new owner is adjusting well and the food quality is still good and flavourful.I hope Ichi Riki will last many more years because its definitely a place that holds many memories and just a nice place for AUTHENTIC JAPANESE CUISINE and not some Korean owned business or Chinese or Mexican trying to make Sushi.

Its changed the teriyaki sauce isnt sweet anymore no more curry :( if they had those both Id feel at complete home. Still with shigi son I feel welcomed everytime like the past 25years from child to adult he knows me and always provide that extraordinary love of being belong to come to this places each time. I hope they bring back the sweet teriyaki sauce and curry. The beef isnt as good as before everything else seems the same. I do like they have more special rolls my cousin ordered the steak sushi roll and said it was good. Salad gained some points since the change miso soup lost the boiled tofu which really was a thing to keep going...

Under new ownership, some familiar faces from old regime. By far our fav Japanese spot in town. Quality & Service is excellent. They could use dedicated hostess during their busier times. I have been here before on two other occasions but never wrote a review. I decided to go during typical prep hours since it would be quiet. Normally it would be hard to find sushi at that time of the day but theyre consistent in that regard. Unfortunately, I couldnt help but feel that the chef was a little standoffish. When regular customers came in I could tell immediately that there was preferential treatment toward them, which is fine with me. Yet, overall the experience was bland. The bar was dirty upon entry and I didnt feel like we were even welcome there to begin with. The sushi is sushi. I go for nigiri 100% of the time and it was prepared very well. I just couldnt help but leave annoyed because the chef didnt seem to have any pride in his work at all. He does very good work but maybe he needs a vacation.

Stopped in at this locally owned gem a five years back on a business trip. Freshest fish, great presentation, reasonable prices, and friendly fast service keeps me coming back here every time I come to town. No BS rolls with tons of random junk. Truly an out-of-the-world experience. The atmosphere and the staff made me feel at home. The food was unbelievable. The tempura was extremely light and fluffy, while also retaining its crispy nature. Which makes a huge difference! The food was just ok. The decor could really use an update. And some of our order got confused, so some food came out very late. This place has so much potential! Very pricey for what we received, but it was good and fresh. However, the spicy tuna roll was like a big chunk of tuna with something spicy. I guess the places I usually get sushi in the east bay do it a little different. It was good. But a $17 dragon roll with ell, I thought it was going to be gigantic, and it was not. That was strange since spicy tuna was $6.Staff was friendly though and service was great - which would make sense, since we were one of 3 tables in their large restaurant last weekend.

Had a weekday lunch here with a friend.Pros: Good-quality, real-deal Japanese food for a decent price, especially at lunch. My friend got the tonkatsu/salmon combination lunch, which for $13 was definitely a value-sized offering. I had the beef teriyaki, which was typical teriyaki, nothing unusual, but tasted good.Cons: Slipshod service. The middle-aged waitress wasnt rude, exactly, but disappeared for long stretches at a time, and multiple times straight up didnt respond or otherwise react in any way to acknowledge what I was saying when I ordered additional items or asked for the check, to the point that I wasnt sure if she had heard me. There were also unbussed tables and bar seats everywhere. I think she was the only server on shift for lunch, but, speaking as a former waiter, it was slow enough that there was no reason to leave that many tables unbussed for that long. It made the place seem less like a proper restaurant and more like a somewhat rundown school cafeteria.Would recommend as the food was solid, but dont expect too much in the way of service or atmosphere, if my experience was any indication.

Went here for a business trip and this place popped up within walking distance of my hotel and I was pleasantly surprised. As a solo diner, I sat at the bar and enjoyed a delicious bento box. Good food and quiet charming atmosphere. They werent big on variety, but they had all your basics. It solved my sushi craving with rolls, tempura, teriyaki, and a salad - all for a very decent price.

Its very obvious that if you are not a local you will not get good service. I had to order my wifes entree twice and still did not receive it. No offers to comp or even a apology, when I tried to complain it was direct back at me saying it was my fault and that he didnt understand. They understood enough to get the the rest of the order correct and understood enough of there friends conversations to ignore other customers.Topped off with barely acceptable sushi. “Icky and Sticky”Without question, my worst Japanese restaurant experience ever! Filthy place, innattentive, lazy employees and the food was not good. When I entered this restaurant I was the only patron. All of the employees were seated at the bar and nearly every table was covered with dirty dishes and a sticky mess. At first I thought they were closed. The staff refused to acknowledge me.I had to ask to be seated when I should have just left. I was reluctantly pointed towards a table where I sat and waited for the longest time before the waitress finally arrived. Again, my better judgment would have been to just get up and leave.Of course, there was no redemption once the food arrived. Needless to say I won’t return. There are too many other good Japanese restaurants in the area.

Have been here many times food is usually really good, but have had one questionable time and had the tonkotsu which the meat smelled, tasted and looked different by color too. All bad. Was told it was a different cut of the meat by the server, but it was obviously going bad and threw up shortly after having a small amount. Unprofessional to question the customer if an order tastes bad for sure. Other times it has been truly great beforehand, but tough to adventure back after the one bad experience. Their famous Seaside roll (rainbow roll) is a near foot long sushi delight and at around $25, their sushi and sashimi combination is a bargain!Sitting at the counter in front of the chefs, customers would be rewarded ocassionally by sushi samples as the chefs prepare dishes for different customers.This is a favorite lunch spot for the local defense workers from NPS and former Ft. I brought my wife and two kids here today. The sushi was unappetizing, not even close to the quality of Safeway takeout sushi. But the dealbreaker was the dead cockroach in the fried rice. We pointed it out (twin antennae and all) politely to the waitress, who tried to claim it was chicken or beef. She then brought it back to the kitchen, and came back several minutes later claiming it was ginger. At no point did the chef bother to come out and say anything to us. We are Japanese food lovers and have sushi, sashimi and Japanese food regularly. Our dinner here cost $42 (inc tips) for two people. We ordered a pork tonkatsu bento box and a combination plate of beef sukiyaki and sashimi, and hot tea.The pork tonkatsu was a bit thin and meat color looked slightly on the dark side, not sure if it was a bit old or not cooked properly but it tasted and ate all right. The sukiyaki tasted great while the accompanied sashimi was not bad for this mid level restaurant.The place is run and operated by all Japanese staff, including the sushi chef. The service could a bit better and more friendly but we got all food in short time despite them being full that night.The sukiyaki combo plate is of great value while the tonkatsu, although cheaper, we give it a fair price considering the meat quality could have been better.We have no problem recommend this place to others with some words of caution, but it is hard to beat this price any where.

When it comes to traditional Japanese food like miso soup, sukiyaki, nabeyaki udon, etc. this is the best place in Monterey.The sashimi (raw fish) is fresh and top quality. The selection of fresh fish is limited; maguro, hamachi, tako, giant clam -- the standards. They dont have fresh salmon but instead serve smoked salmon (not my favorite). No uni, no ika.
