Very nice family restaurant 👌The owners are around every customer, knowing the regulars by their names. We had a birthday party here, and everything and everyone was exceptional! I am looking forward to our next occasion!

A large menu with a lot of variety. You can sit at the sushi bar or get a table. Our favorite is the 3 item combo dinner for around $15. You pick 3 entrees and it also comes with salad and rice and miso soup. Their tempura is always a good choice.The owner usually walks around to make sure his guests are satisfied.

The quality of the food is on point. The volcano roll was to die for! Chicken udon was also very good. The staff is super friendly. They truly made us feel right at home. This was our second visit, def not waiting 4 years for our 3rd!

Its too bad they took away their only deal worth going for. (Saturday 50% off individual sushi pieces).I wish I could still speak highly of this place. I used to recommend it to everyone.The staff has become increasingly unwelcoming and unfriendly in each visit to not only myself, but to my entire group of friends- regular customers for years.. in fact, they knew us by name and were always very welcoming until several months ago when things started going downhill.Last time I was here I waited an hour for my food to come out only for another waiter to tell me the original waiter went home and they never put the order in. No apology. We ate quickly and got our check, took 30 minutes to get any service to come collect it. We left without leaving a tip and they stopped us at the door rudely asking why we didn’t tip. Gee I wonder?

So disheartening and, in fact, rude to be asked repeatedly to leave by the cook, when our server AND the owner encouraged us to take our time though it was closing time. Our Ichiban Special A plates were delicious and complete with miso, crisp salad, chicken teriyaki, veggie tempura, seasoned cucumber slices, CA Roll, and gyoza. All cooked to perfection and nicely seasoned. What a lovely evening and exceptional restaurant….except for the cook who spoiled our evening by asking us to leave by showing us to the door. He was incredibly rude. Yes, the restaurant had closed, but we were assured that taking our time was most important. But this cook made it his mission to make us feel badly about being there. I’m afraid that though the owners made every effort to welcome us, the cook spoiled the evening for us and we will not be returning. What a shame because the meal and service were amazing!

We have been here for dinner about three times. The food is good, and the wait staff are attentive and kind. The issue is that often their food takes a long time coming. Twice we have taken over two hours to eat due to the wait getting our ordered meals (both sushi and cooked dishes like teriyaki chicken). Its not a huge problem when we go, because we have the time to spend with each other. Just be aware that you, too, could fall on an off day and take a long time for dinner. The other thing that happens is the owner, when he seats us, tends to touch my husband on the back or shoulder in such a way that makes him uncomfortable. But the food is good and the people who own and run the restaurant are very nice. We will still be going here in future.

I really love Ichiban! The food is excellent, the selection is great, the prices are very reasonable, and the service is superb! The owner always stops by the tables and checks on the customer satisfaction, and he even helps out the staff--he really cares. But, if I really want to impress out-of-town and out-of-state visitors and family, this is my go-to place to take them. And Ichiban never fails to impress! I hear about their memories for years afterwards! I am most appreciative that they are open for outside dining at this time.

Nothing like it used to be. Nice service, but the food has lost its appeal. Rolls were not tight, they were loose and falling apart, and only room temperature, not chilled and delicious. Tempura was tiny shrimps. Sad.

My girlfriend and i have eaten here a couple times and love it!!!! The spicy tuna is the best and the first sushi place that isnt stingy with there spicy mayonnaise yum!!!! The customer service is great and food is awesome. This is one of my top five sushi places and would recommend to anyone.

Food always good, service kind and helpful. Owners amazing.. Still our favorite sushi after 20 years. My kids ask to go too and sad if I leave them out. Kid friendly chopsticks, edaname, rice bowls, bake Samon entree, and teriyaki chicken are their favorites. My kids only drink water. I love their homemade ponzu sauce. I recommend their Mt. Fuji roll !!!Hope you enjoy as much as we do.

Use to be great place.David (sushi chef) was great and the reason I would go regularly. He left, and I tried the place twice after... Needless to say, we found a new place to go.Another reason I moved on... I had an issue during my first visit after David left.. I told the manager/owner and she did nothing to resolve the problem.

My wife and I went here and they initially forgot to give us our sticky rice bowl with our meal. So the owner lady comes over, asks how our meal is, we tell her about the rice and she ends up crediting my beer for the meal. One free beer is a good deal for the rice being 20 minutes late imoGreat place to eat. The owners will come by your table and chat with you and really care about making this restaurant have a good atmosphere.

We go to Ichiban when we are in the mood for Japanese cuisine. The restaurant has been a fixture in Brea for many, many years. It has a broad menu and the food is consistently good. Surprisingly good! Other than being here during a busy time, with few waiters, the experience was positive and the food was flavorful. Salmon belly shashimi was crisped and my wife was enamoured with it. Save it for last. Soup was basic, salad and dressing was amazing. Whatever dressing that was it could make anything taste good. I felt like the portion of katsu I had was smaller than other places for a rice, curry, katsu plate but the amount of curry and rice made up for it. Definitely a good place for dinner.

SUMMARY: Below-Average Quality and Portion at Above-Average Price.The Good:-Service - Friendly Waiters/Waitresses-Menu - Fairly wide selection of lunch specials on the menu.The Average:-Quality - Fish quality is average. Its not fishy but its bland. Probably fish is farm-raised, not caught in wild.-Authenticity - Menu and taste cater more to non-Asians. Taste tends to be on the sweeter and saltier side. Some people like this so I dont mark this as good or bad.The Bad:-Dishonesty - If you use coupons or Groupon deals, you will get much less portion and lower quality ingredients (cheaper fish, more batter than meat) than regular to make up for the discount. They will also try to upsell you on sides and extras like miso soup, additional rice, salad, etc. I understand food cost matters in restaurant business but the management shouldnt utilize coupons and promotions if they are not going to honor them.-Portion - Large plates but small portions. Fried chicken has more batter than chicken. Fish on sushi is not generous at all.-Price - Lunch special will run you around $15-$20 and dinner $20-$30 with tax. For similar price, there are many other Japanese restaurants with either more portion or higher quality.-Location - Sort of hidden and hard to see from the streets.A big disappointment. We spent about $55 for lunch (3 people) and we wont be back again.

Established sushi place in Brea hidden in an obscure corner of a shopping center. Lots of famous people pics line the front entrance which add to the nostalgia. Service was pleasant, although we felt attentiveness couldve been increased. Food was good. In comparison to the high price, it wasnt as good of a value as one could expect somehere less tenured. I wish I could give a negative star rating. My fiancé and I had just finished shopping at the mall across the street. We headed over to this restaurant after my fiancé saw the red and white sushi sign. She was stoked. As we arrive, another couple is walking up to the waiting area. The gentleman that was seating everyone (Jim?) went up to the couple that was within earshot of us and asked them “for how many?” They said “2” and he let them know that it might be a couple of minutes before they were seated. This seemed normal as the place was really busy. He then comes outside and tells the couple in front of us that he’s going to bring a table outside for them. I thought “wow the service here must be good”. I was excited now because this was our first time visiting and I thought we found a great new sushi spot. He seats the couple and then comes over to us and blankly stares at my fiancé and I. I greet him saying “Hey how’s it going?” He didn’t reply and just stared at us. At this point I thought maybe he didn’t hear me with my mask on and all. So then I said “Hello, may I have a table for 2 please?” He raised an eyebrow and asked “Do you have a reservation?” To which I replied “No” because, as I mentioned before, we were just driving by. The man in question told us that since we didn’t have a reservation it would be several minutes before we could be seated. At this point I just said “that’s fine” because we didn’t mind waiting for what seemed to be a hospitable establishment. As he’s walking back inside from talking to us, an older woman walks right passed us and yells, “Hey (Jim?), I have a 6 o’ Clock”. To which the (Jim?) replied “oh yes come right in”. So I’m thinking, man this place must be good if people make reservations. I didn’t think anything past that.We continue to wait. It had been about 30 minutes when he comes out again and tells us “Hey guys, like I said, it’s going to be several minutes.” Again, I replied “that’s okay”. (Jim?) didn’t say anything back and started to walk away again. As he was walking back, a group of 3 women came behind us talking rather loudly. We heard “Oh my god it’s full”, “what happened to the other table that was here”. One woman asked another “did you make a reservation?” to which the other woman replied “No”. The woman that replied “No” yelled “Hi!” at (Jim?). He turned around and said “Oh hey!”. (Jim?) approached the women. The one that said she didn’t make a reservation pulled her shades down under her eyes and asked “Do you have a table for us?” (Jim?) didn’t say a word but instead nodded at them and waved them over to follow him. My fiancé and I just looked at each other and didn’t say a word. We both knew what had just happened but didn’t want to even speak about it. We were in such a state of shock that we both just walked back to the car silently. I’ve taken some time to think about this situation. I’ve given every person the benefit of the doubt. I feel that one has to be extremely careful and conscientious when it comes to talking about discrimination in the current political climate. However, after taking some time and reflecting on my actions and the actions of those around me, I feel saddened and disappointed. The couple that showed up moments before us? White. The group of women that clearly didn’t have a reservation? White. My fiancé and I? A young Hispanic couple. I truly feel that we were discriminated against on that day. I don’t wish bad upon anyone because my mama taught me better. What I do wish, is for those who feel this way, for whatever reason. Remember that we are all human beings and we all deserve to be treated equally.Do unto others what you wish done to you.I wish you well in your future endeavors.Will not be returning.Do not recommend.Raza, stay away.

Thirty years in business tells the story, there is much more to the story of this Ichiban Restaurant for me. We had a great time visiting this wonderful Japanese Restaurant in beautiful Brea, CA. This was my first visit; I was invited and almost passed on going; C told me it was Ichiban... I already knew that Ichiban is Japanese for number 1.I am very glad I accepted; I have found a great, must return to Japanese Restaurant experience that I can only rave about!The owner, Tom was our greeter and I was immediately impressed as Tom is very personable and quite willing to share some smiles, his humor (a couple of jokes.. as I had one to share with him) and some interesting information on Ichiban. As he took us to our table he told me that his wife Masako is the visionary of this exceptional restaurant as I was commenting on the pleasing interior decor.A restaurant to get inspired by; everything unfolded perfectly after being seated. Julio (they call him Juliosan he told me later) was our server. Young, mild, well mannered... a super server in my opinion; took our order and proceeded to make our dining experience as perfect as he possibly could.Tom checked up on us also and he brought Masako over and introduced her to us (They check up on all of their customers). She was very gracious willing to talk and listen; I told her how much we were enjoying her beautiful restaurant; I mentioned that the Sake was excellent (very smooth and favorable), the Chicken Karaage was the best (first time I have had this delicious Japaneses style fried chicken), the plating was gorgeous (see some of my photos) and I also mentioned my appreciation of the minimal interior design. She smiled and thanked me as I went on and on and on...The food at this Ichiban was delicious and artistically plated; they serve generous portions (plenty left to take some home) and we consider the pricing to be very affordable to us!There is nothing Tom, Masako and Juliosan could have done to improve our experience. 100 percent satisfaction... easiest 5 Star of the year and we visit a lot of restaurants, many fine dining. C and S travel far more than I do; they search out the best (I do also but sometimes I look for the diamond in the rough). Tacky interior, outdated menu, low quality food. This wasnt worth the money. The sashimi was ok. The canned mandarin oranges were fermented. This place seems to have their regulars, but if you want quality sushi dont go here and if youre looking for any creativity this is not the place.If you want mediocre food in a drab environment with a waiter that frequently runs and dashes around, this is a good choice.

There are a lot of places to get sushi nowadays. And, not to disparage Korean sushi shops, but I feel that most people who go out for sushi are expecting a Japanese experience. Next time you go to your favorite sushi shop, ask the employees what part of Japan the owner is from, and you will usually find out that they are Korean. Ichiban, on the other hand, is Japanese owned and operated. Its more than a sushi restaurant, it is a Japanese restaurant. It offers authentic Japanese dishes and combinations, prepared in an authentic way.(Kabuki, for example, is Japanese fusion with very few actual Japanese combinations or presentation. Other izakayas in Orange County, usually invest much more in the Japanese theme, rather than the authenticity of the food and presentation.)The owner and the sushi chefs are all from Japan.I recently visited with a group visiting from Japan and it met their tastes perfectly.Ichiban has been a secret spot in Brea for over 32 years, and they deserve more credit than they are given. Being authentic, they are a little bit pricey, but for the quality of food you are getting, its still a great value. If you ever have a Japanese guest or want to experience a true Japanese restaurant, then you have to go to Ichiban.

I have been eatting here for about 8 years now. The owner is a fun and cheerful person. If you have a large family they have a meal choice called a family boat, its satisfying seeing a large amount of food served on a small boat ( I have seen things like this in Japan, really Cool ). They have Oreo tempura for after dinner sweet and mochi as well. I always look forward to going back and trying something new or just having the same old comfort food.

If I want wasabi on every piece of sushi, I will put it on. The sushi chef (?) should not liberally douse every rice pillow with wasabi. I want to enjoy the fish, not have to wipe my running nose between each bite. And leave out the rubber, uh the unchewable octopus. And no ginger root to cleanse the pallet between bites? Did they run out, or just forget it? I did like the cucumber salad and the caterpillar roll. The atmosphere was really nice. But overall, it was not a good dinner experience. One star is being generous.
