This place was just ok. Visiting from the Bay Area and compared to sushi spots there this one was too pricey for the portions they gave. Rolls were on the thin side compared to other places. Ordered a shrimp katsu curry and it only had 3 peices of shrimp. Ordered a spicy scallop roll for $14 and the peices of scallop were tiny.The atmosphere was nice and our server was friendly and attentive. The portions compared to price arent really worth it though.

It was a great experience! The fish was fresh and tasty! The service was great and everyone were friendly! I sat at the bar and chef Zack was awesome! I highly recommend this place if you like sushi!The prices are reasonable and the place is very nice and fun!

I was blessed today when my kid brought sushi home after her classes. She raves about the place and I must agree because it was amazing even after a 45 minute drive. The maki plate was a meal on its own and the tuna, yellow tail and salmon were wicked fresh. The wasabi vinaigrette was tremendous on the salad the edamame fresh and crisp. Make sure you try the taco as well, it’s to die for.

Great prices for happy hour/lunch. Sushi tastes really good and everything seems very fresh. The staff is polite but doesnt listen to orders well, but will get you what you need without an issue. They tend to add a bit (as in a lot) of sauce, so be sure to order light or no. Salmon and tuna is a bit of a mush, but is tasty. The dinning area is very diner esc and could use some new furniture. Still tasty and enjoyable.

Best Sashimi Ive had in a long time! Ive eaten at a lot of sushi bars and restaurants and this place hands down was amazing!The atmosphere was a total vibe. They had Howls Moving Castle playing and the staff was extremely friend.My fiance ordered the Katsu Curry and it was so good! I had the Unagi Bowl and that too was amazing.We ordered drinks as well. I highly recommend the Spirited Away. Its light and really good!10/10 would definitely drive 10 hours back to this place!

We stopped in for happy hour and had a very nice meal. We picked the Chef’s Choice and the fish was good. My personal opinion was it’s a 4 star restaurant. Sushi was delivered to our table without wasabi and I had to go inside and find our waitress after we asked for wasabi after about 10 min of waiting for her return. No biggie! They were having a service meeting with all of the staff and took care of us right away. Overall, I recommend this spot!!

Best sushi in town, hands down. I love the way that this place is decorated. The staff is courteous, conscientious, and, most importantly, helpful. They dont behave as if theyre put out to be doing their job and actually seem enthused to explain the options on the menu. Keep up the good work folks!

We placed our order which was 3 diff types of Nigiri, sunomomo. Baby octopus, and katsu curry.I guess he didnt hear me right because he only brought out 1 type of nigiri not 3. But i didnt get charged either.Sunomomo cucumber and octopus was good. Great flavor.Katsu curry is ok. Its very basic but when i dont have time to make it myself it does the job.New place, and I do appreciate them hiring college kids to help them.

Slightly better than Safeway. Check out the salad and what the sushi came in and thats all you need to know. It was edible, not bad but not something you want to pay decent money for. We got it to go and they estimated an hour to be done and then it was finished 30 minutes early... Which meant the food was nice and cold for us as a bonus.

Since we couldnt eat inside due to the pandemic, the patio outside was very cute and well decorated. They also had water mists spraying during to the very hot days, it was nice. The food was very delish and I loved the cream melon soda. Their is a good enough portion of food in the bento box, very filling! I got the teriyaki salmon bento box, it was oh so delicious!The sushi is very tasty also. When I come visit Cali again, Ill definitely come back to this place.

The service of this place has gone really down hill. I went in with my girlfriend and about half the tables were full, so it wasnt too busy. We sat down and ordered two simple plates. During the 40 minute wait to receive our food we watched four other tables get served before us that arrived later than we did. This wasnt so bad, but when we asked two separate staff for an update they simply said We arent your server and left. Upon getting our food I noticed my order was wrong so I asked another waitress there about my order and I received the response Im not your waitress. A little frustrated at this point by the rudeness I was being given, I decided to ask once more for something. This was our miso soup which neither of us had received 15 minutes after being given our meal. I was amazed once again at the same reply of Im not your waitress. FOUR different waiters snubbed us and we just ended up with a meal that we didnt order and an incomplete meal. Id be more understanding if it was really busy, but this was probably the worst food service Ive encountered before.

Sat down and wait staff kept walking past us for at least 15 mins. Other tables seated after us had their orders taken. Flagged down waitress who said she’s not our server, but took our order anyways. Unagi don only had three tiny pieces of eel. Mainly rice for $18. Menu says comes with miso soup, but never received it. When bill came, there was an extra $5 charge for something we did not order. Seems mismanaged in the restaurant.

I live in Texas, so this was my first experience of fine dining in chico. When we got there we were very excited to enjoy our dinner date. It was a very cute patio outdoor seating with a nice atmosphere. The wait to be seated was short even though they were busy. The main concern wasnt until they took us to our table to be seated. It was a random tiny wooden table for two pressed up against the wall directly in the middle of a big dirty gray puddle. As it had not rained for days I assumed it was leaking out the building itself. Seeing as the water was deep and didnt want to ruin my shoes or have soaked socks during my date, I kindly asked if we could be moved out of the puddle. The server said she would ask management and return. I see management come out with a different table and setting it up a few feet from us. I was happy thinking we would actually get to sit in the patio tables they have and not this uncomfortable little wooden table. But I was mistaken as they had instead set out a brand new table for two teenagers instead and then came and said they would move our table out of the puddle. I was happy as long as I wasnt in the water. That was until I saw where they were placing our table. They proceeded to put in right in front of some door from the building that was on a ramp only a few feet away from said puddle. Yes a little sloped ramp for us to enjoy our dinner date slanted with the fear of our stuff falling over this already tiny table. This spot was also beautifully positioned a few feet away from a parking space as well so we got to enjoy headlights blinding us in the face all night long. We stayed optimistic seeing as it was already late and not many places were open. We wanted to at least give the food a try even though the rest of the experience was a bit embarrassing to say the least. The food was great and our server was very kind. Would of been 5 stars had it not been feeling like the outcast women stuck to the corner. Luckily for us we make the most out of our date nights

Tasty Spicy Tuna & Snow Crab Japanese Tacos and Shrimp Tempura rolls! Can compete with the sushi restaurants of San Diego. Very impressed! Will definitely come back. After the lunch rush is best since they get large groups coming in.

Editing my review: I re-visited Ichiban again today after my upetting experience before but I will say they managed to turn my experience around. It was the quickest service yet, Marco was at the front took my order and said give me 5 min. Food was ready within the time frame but the miso soup was still semi empty. Not sure if its the containers or what. Anyway, Ill be going back again hopefully the soup is served how it should be. Thanks Marco!!

I highly recommend the chefs special is always something different and the chef is a true artist in his craft. The staff is very friendly as well. A top notch american style sushi shop. If youre looking for strictly authentic and youve been to Japan and know what that is, expect a good American version. Still having lived outside Tokyo for a year I give it to things up.

This place has gone down hill since the pandemic. Are there new owners or chef? Yakatori is now fried instead of grilled. Its awful and the chicken teriyaki is doused in sugary sauce. The miso was cold and the staff rude. I used to love this restaurant, but after several subpar meals at the new location Im finally done with this restaurant.

Quality has declined a bit since they moved locations and the retro diner vibes were off putting for a sushi restaurant but the food was decent.Was not super impressed but not disappointed either. We visited two weeks ago. Dine in was available. They spaced out tables, so I felt very comfortable to eat in the restaurant. The server was very nice and friendly. Chicken teriyaki in the bento box was a little bit disappointing because the chicken was not grilled, it was pan fried. I requested no sauce on top. Living in Seattle, which is the capitol of chicken teriyaki(American style), the chicken MUST BE GRILLED, not pan fried. However, it was good quality chicken breast, and had a good portion of chicken. The Udon soup was homemade. It was tasty but a little bit sweet to me. Donkatsu curry rice was delicious, but Donkatsu pork was not that tender. The spicy tuna roll that came with the bento box didnt meet my standard.

My husband and I just ate there this evening on a short stop in Chico and it was tremendous. There was no wait, the service was on point, the sushi chefs were kind and easy to spark a conversation with, and it offers the best sushi Ive had in Chico! We tried the Chico Roll, the Shiso-Fly Roll and the Coconut Shrimp Roll — the last of which was a perfect sweet way to end our meal.

I am so disappointed about customer service so poor that used not be. Employees used to be much better before. The manager and the server were so rude and the sever didnt even know how to serve. As I walked in and the guy who is the manager at the restaurant told me to seat anywhere so rudely. However when other people came, he was taking them to seat. How did it work as a manager? He also was crossed his arms when he passed by, so unacceptable behavior.And the server was so untrained that she left a water cup so close to the edge of the table and forgot to bring a plastic bag.The food was great but customer service was horrible I didnt expect that especially from this rude manager.

Tonight my husband went in to order us some food and I wanted a couple rolls, I wanted cucumber and avocado added so of course it was extra which is expected…but when we got the rolls, I was unsure why we were even charged extra for avocado and cucumber when there were more pieces of the roll without any cucumbers or avocados, it was very hit or miss which was strange. Some pieces with just straight up tuna or imitation crab with a couple pieces that either had just avo or just cucumber. Which wasn’t what was asked for or paid EXTRA for.So since my husband ordered it, he went back in to communicate the issue in hopes for a refund because thats what you do and what happens if you’re unhappy with what you got. I just wanted my money back. Simple. The worker gave him a hard time about it and that was that.I’m not saying their food is bad because I haven’t even tried it, but to charge someone EXTRA for something they ask AND paid more for and not deliver even half of that, and on top of that NOT refund them for it, it’s beyond me.Obviously a greedy and broke business and if the money, almost $20 will not be given back the situation definitely will be escalated and taken to local authorities.

Loved this place! 2 friends and I came here for lunch. We ordered the mexican roll, the italian roll, avocado roll, a veggie roll, a tuna and a crab japanese tacos, edamame and mixed tempura. The edamame and tempura were a bit on the cold side so 4 stars. But the rest of the food was AMAZING!!!! We will definitely be back!

As a disclaimer, Im not a huge sushi fan, so I cant compare to many other options.The service is always top notch here, although its a bit cluttered it never feels overly crowded.Their most notable item it the Japanese Taco, specifically with the imitation crab. Its really good. I find the rolls and soup underwhelming though. The chef special is also always a dud for me. Not to mention, its about $12+ a plate for what feels like not a lot of food.If you like sushi in Chico, check it out. In comparison to other eateries, theres probably better options out there.

The attention to detail in both presentation and taste was evident in every dish we tried. The chefs special and the coconut shrimp roll were outstanding. Another standout was the creamy mango soda we ordered. The refreshing fizz of the soda combined with the luscious mango flavor was a perfect complement to our meal. We dined in. We happened to be very lucky when we went because it was in between busy times. We were able to seat at the mini bar at the back of the restaurant and had it all to ourselves. It was great. The server was really good and attentive. We had the sushi and it was very fresh and good. I love sushi and have been enjoying high quality sushi for over 30 years. Even some of the most expensive sushi bars in California. ( That was in the old days, unfortunately. Im retired now ) however, for Chico California, this place is great! I highly recommend it.

Very attentive!Manager said he would move us from a small table to booth (as we ordered quite a bit of dishes!), but then forgot about us. After 5 minutes, 2 other couples walked in & they were sat there.Seating a little tight on the high tops for 2!Since the service was so good, we didnt complain. Great food! It can seem a little out of the way if you arent already on that side of town, but it is always worth it. If its just a casual lunch, the bento box is a great value for what you get, plus they frequently add little extras to the meal depending on the day. And if you somehow manage to go through the whole menu and somehow get bored with the options (very unlikely), their omakase is always sure to delight with something new and artistic! Definitely recommend for a good solid first experience with sushi if youve never managed to try it before.

The best sushi in town, they have an awesome staff and they are very fun to watch. I go their all the time. I recommend the lion roll or the chico roll. I also recommend the spicy gyoza ramen. If there was an option to in my bank account to get everything on the menu I would! They are so respectful to the customers and they make you feel secure. Food has no flavor, the tempura was soggy, and the sushi had a frozen burn taste. Maybe they should rebrand into a sandwich spot, because how can you screw up bread, meat, and cheese.

Used to be a favorite Sushi place. But today we experienced the worst service. The waiter forgot our drink, brought our appetizer out last. Our tempura was also not cooked all the way through. Our waitress also did not smile at all. And we had to ask for plates. And it seems like their Sushi portions are getting smaller and smaller. I still enjoy their Japanese tacos though. I hate leaving a review like this. Usually we have a really pleasant time eating there.

If I could give this place -5 stars I would. The sushi was not worth the price very small portions and off taste with the Loin king special roll. The only thing that got me through was the suki. One of the male employees behind the sushi bar kept staring at us felt very odd and creepy. The whole time would not break eye contact.the waitress was very nice tho. If you do decide to come pre game it’s the only way to enjoy it.

Not going to lie, the food was pretty good and we, my small group of 3, was informed of longer wait times to be served due to current circumstances. It looked like a private birthday party was happening so I understood and thanked the waitress for letting us know. The main problem i had with it was ordering before two other tables, with nothing from the kitchen except for a single bowl of rice (the rest was sushi bar), and seeing the two tables that seated after my group get served when they has some kitchen items which we were told would actually have a longer wait time than sushi items. We tried to be cordial about it and didnt make a fuss, though I did find it a little bothersome. The waitress we had and the staff in general were wonderful and kind, although the kitchen/sushi chef did mess up on two of the rolls we ordered. This place doesnt know how to make Japanese food, period.I had the saltest noodle soup in my life. The soup was no broth, but made of water and VERY salty low quality soy sauce. The noodle was soggy, too. The roll was edible but it was a simlified version of what you can normally get from a real sushi place, plus the portion was too small for the price charged. We have been eating at Ichiban for years because it has been consistent. It is always going to be the top notch. I crave Japanese tacos with spicy tuna, and now we can add crab stuffed mushrooms to that craving. Service is always friendly and quick. Four or five pieces of chicken with barely any sauce over dry white rice, and a little pile of wilted lettuce next to it, when I ordered two chicken and vegetable teriyaki plates. It was the wait for that missing item that took place after the order was placed AND MOSTLY the tone of voice from a man who I assume was the manager telling me four times (minimum) the “It will be out soon” as though he was annoyed with me checking on our food. The worst restaurant in Chico. There is a guy that works for Izakaya (in his 40s) he seriously lacks customer service and cares more about flirting with the waitresses. Love this place. Its a small hidden little restaurant, decorated nicely with a nice outdoor eating area. They make the best Japanese tacos that you can get either crab or tuna in. I love the crab. They are made of a tempura fried egg plant slice that is shaped like a taco shell and stuffed full of crab, greens and special sauce. I could eat them everyday! And they are only $2.95 each. I went the restaurant 3 weeks ago to order something to go and they told me that my order will be ready in 1 hour, I came back an hour later and waited for 30 minutes for my order to be ready.Today which is 4/3/2021, I called the restaurant at 1:49 pm and I ordered 3 Rolls of Sushi to go and they told me my order will be ready in 30 minutes, I went to the restaurant at 2:20 pm and waited until 2:49 pm and my order wasn’t ready yet.Super bad service.Not recommended at all unless you don’t have problem with spending your weekend waiting for your order.

2 weeks as I was paying for my 2 sushi rolls and some veggie tempura, one of the sushi rollers coughed a big wet nasty cough directly into his palm, wiped his hand on his jeans and reached into the rice to make some poor saps sushi. I was mortified and asked the cashier if he just saw what I saw. I told him no way did I wanted that man to make my rolls and was brushed aside. I should have asked for my money back and ran, but instead, I threw the rolls in the trash and ate a couple pieces of my veggie tempura because I was starving and I rationalized that the tempura is cooked in the back kitchen far from that person. I was as disgusted with my choice as with the big sushi roller. Why didnt he have a mask on? Why was his big hairy coughed on hands touching our food? My excuse was a 15 hour day and starvation, what is Ichibans excuse?

Worst service ever. Our waitress just left in the middle of serving us. Didnt bring our drinks and didnt put in our sushi order. We used to come here a lot but never again, not after that kind of treatment. There is better sushi out there with servers who treat you like people and not an inconvenience.

Love this place! I spent four years living in Japan and Im always looking to scratch the itch of the food I miss. This place does a great job at that!There are so many great things on the menu. The katsu don and katsu curry are some of my favs. So many delicious things on the appetizer menu too. TRY THE JAPANESE TACOS!!!!The only downside is I feel the sushi is kind of meh, but dont let that stop you from eating here!

I love the food and service at Ichiban. However, the employees were not wearing masks. With the pandemic happening right now, food handlers should especially wear masks. A good place to spend a date night. They always have fresh sushi and sashimi. We have never been disappointed by the quality of fish here.In summer, it is pretty nice to have either lunch or dinner outside (there are outside seatings available.)

Let me just begin this review with a simple statement: I am 24 and I have never liked sushi... Until now.I came here originally for a teriyaki bowl and tea, instead I was convinced to try fish. I informed the server that I wanted to try something new, but I had never liked fish in general. I enjoyed 2 rolls, and some sashimi and Im coming back for more.If you come to Izakaya, ask for Hannah. If she is your server, youre in good hands and she is bluntly honest about every dish.In conclusion, I left with a new positive outlook on sushi in general and a preferred waitress that didnt steer me wrong.

Ifzakaya Ichiban was a very relaxing excellent experience. The wait staff was courteous and very helpful with suggestions. There is ample out door seating where you are able to enjoy your meal with your party while being adequately social distanced fron others. The food was not only beautifully presented it was also very delicious. I recommend the bento box if you are going for the first time and not sure what to order. It contains a nice salad, a tasting of seaweed salad, a roll, rice and your choice of meat with a light coating if teriyaki. There were several other small bites and of course pickled ginger and a dab if wasabi. Definately a place to return to to tryout the many options.

FYI... Several current Sushi restaurants in Chico sprung from one great Japanese restaurant in Chico that existed a few decades ago. Owner sold that restaurant (think he went to Cambodia to support fresh water well program). The staff split up and went on to start there own restaurants and the rest is history. Soooooo......O.K. Service was slow due to Fathers Day, however, 5 stars to staff for quality service. Grandma had part time cooking show on Japanese TV in Hawaii so I am a little spoiled when it comes to authentic Japanese food. Sunomono was pickled correctly, unlike other local sushi places. Tempura oil could have uses a few degrees more but was good. Sushi \ Sashimi tasted fresh and portions were generous. Anyway, good job on a stressful day will bring me back again.

Waited 15 minutes to get a menu from a young lady waitress with braces who then proceeded to get our order wrong. Had to flag down a different waiter to get it corrected. Was told the wrong roll would be removed from the bill then the waitress refused to take it off and coped an attitude. She then spent the rest of our time socializing with a different table. Our Italian roll wasnt made correctly, twice, and the check wasnt split correctly. Sushi was unflavorful except for the energy roll and none of the rolls were cut all the way through. Ill never go back here.

We went in on a Sunday, asked if they could change the channel so we could watch the Niner game... we were told by the wait staff, the chef is a patriots fan so probably not. When he realized we were watching the game on my husbands phone(apparently he didnt think we were being serious), he said he would actually go ask... well he came back with an answer of No.Yes, I gave 1 star. Especially when we were the only people(out of 3 tables) watching football and the chef had his own tv at his little sushi station. Ill gladly spend my money elsewhere to watch my Niners play.

Love this place. Best sushi in Chico. The environment is nice and chill, with live music playing and really nice people and staff all around! Must try if you are a sushi lover!
