Best rum punch I’ve had outside of the Bahamas. They have authentic beef patties - delicious. Plantains were a bit too sweet but overall amazing would recommend

We wanted to try Janga. It was super windy, but we found an outdoor table up on the patio. We tried their recommended items: festival bread, mac and cheese balls, fried plantains. It was ALL good. My teen absolutely loved the shrimp and grits, which totally hit the spot on that day. Easily would return.

The food was excellent, the service was impeccable, and the vibe was great. Its not an upscale joint but it is clean, classy, & irie! Theres indoor and outdoor seating, and they serve a fruity whiskey to write home about. The ginger pineapple drink was wonderful and spice was just right. If youre not sure about your spice capacity this is real Jamaican so dont play -- start at mild and work your way up🥵.

I love coming to places where service is quick and efficient and the food is made with intention. The first thing I noticed was getting water before asking. I love that. I came with a group of five women and we ordered the beef and chicken patties (A+), curry goat (A+), oxtail (A+), jerk chicken and shrimp combo (A+), and plantain (A+). The portions were great and the food came out piping hot. We also tried their cocktail drinks (wonderful) and the ginger pineapple drink (if you like ginger its a great drink). After our meal, the waitress was able to split our checks using a handheld card reader that verified our orders and ran our forms of payment. It was quick and painless. After our meal we were asked by the owner how the meal was and thanked for stopping by. These 5 stars were deserved! I WILL be going back soon.

My husband ordered take away from here because our favorite Jamaican restaurant, Little Kingston Jamaica, was closed and we figured we’d try something new.The food was mediocre: small portions and lacking flavor.Not much to say about the service since he got the food to go… except he was charged a 20% gratuity charge for food that was TO GO. This is bad business ethics. Charging your patrons that are not dining in the restaurant a 20% gratuity charge for to-go orders leaves a worse taste in our mouths than the food you sold us.Not to mention they don’t offer parking so be prepared to double park or circle the block 10x to find a spot.DO NOT SUPPORT THIS BUSINESS.

Jerk chicken was flavorless. Healthy greens were crunchy with little to no seasoning. Beef patty filling wasnt good or piping hot. Rice and beans were decent. For the price and lack of authenticity I cannot recommend it. Service was quick and the staff was friendly

Never disappointed in our trips to Janga. We come here for great seafood dinner or sometimes just crave their fries (and a fruity cocktail). Always feels like being welcomed into someones home. A special place, check them out!

It was very awesome. The staff were warm, friendly and articulate.They could even help you pick the right order. Me and my boyfriend ordered the red snapper with rice and beans while I ordered coconut shrimp with Derricks healing greens. The taste was awesome, they tasted fresh;the fish and greens. And the rice and beans tasted tropical( as if they were curated somewhere in the Carribean by a loving mother)The parking is in the parking structure off Cardiff Ave. Usually 1 hour is free and then you pay for the time after.The only con is that the wait for food is a little long, maybe between 30 to 45 minutes . I guess thats the time it takes to fky to the Carribean, get the rice and beans from a lovely home and back again in LA

This place is average and honestly, slightly subpar. The food isnt anything special and the portion is small for the hefty price tag.The service was mediocre. The manager lured us in by telling us that hell give us free drinks if we dined there, and when we sat down he just kept avoiding the question. We still ended up buying drinks but the principle of deceiving marketing is just disappointing.Expect to pay $40-50 per person (one drink ordered, no appetizers). I would not be returning and I do not recommend this place.

The food was delicious. I had the jerk shrimp which was very tasty, well seasoned, not too spicy and just the right size portion. The greens were excellent and the rice and beans hit the spot. Our server was funny, attentive and just an all around great hostess. We definitely plan to go back.

I enjoyed my time at Jangas! ☺️ Three friends and I traveled from Louisiana for a girls trip in June. Everyone enjoyed their meals. I had salmon, mashed potatoes and healing greens. Another friend had the oxtails. They were superb! Lord have mercy that kale melted in my mouth like butter and was so delicious. 😋Next time I visit LA I will definitely come back. Nice atmosphere and the live music made it a whole vibe!

But Lucy’s lack of human decency in regards to her treatment of her coworker, Lucy really ruined my experience. She was very condescending to her and very unprofessional. My son was very excited to go to this place. He got the jerk chicken and I got the curry vegetables. We also got the appetizer sampler with plantains, shrimp and chicken. The shrimp was large. Otherwise, I found all the food to be unremarkable. They were edible but nothing stood out for me where I would encourage someone else go to this location over the many other choices in the area. Evidently, they are having issues with staffing as well, but I didnt really hold that against them as virtually all places seem to have that problem.

I like this place . The customer service can be better. I am vegetarian and I love the plantains and the curry veggies. The curry veggies are so freaking tasty. Also the veggie patties are really good and very filling.Update 3 years later :I’ve brought over 5 friends who are POC here and they all do not enjoy the food they always say it is not flavorful and honestly it is a more diverse crowd now than ever before that comes here so I think they cater to a different type of people. But I still would come for those veggie Pattie’s . But Since the pandemic the customer service got worse. The use a different vendor for the veggie Pattie’s and they aren’t bad but the other ones with cabbage were amazing!I’ve given this place many chances coming here for 4 years. But when my friend and I came on Sunday 11/27 we did not like the service at all and thought the food was horrible. Usually they send you a text to review how your service was and the black guy server didn’t even bother. He was asking us to clean up the table as if we worked there. Just so sad to see the places you love go downhill.

I was super excited to have some hearty and flavorful Jamaican food. I ordered the Brown Stew Chicken and my friend ordered the Jerk Chicken (white meat). I thoroughly enjoyed my dish. The stew was yummy. I loved every last bit of the heading greens. However, the probs were small for the price that we paid.I tried a bit of my friends dish, expecting some tender white meat but it was tough and overcooked. I still enjoyed the jerk seasoning so that redeemed the dish for me. I would come back again but try some of their other items.

Worst Caribbean food I’ve ever tasted and I’ve been around the world!!! The rice and pea is straight out of a packet from Trader Joe’s. The cabbage is kale with a watery bland taste and the veggies tasted like the air down skid row.At first I thought the kale was cállalo, however after closer inspection it was bushier than European weed. I did know whether to eat it or grind it. Drier than a sand scorpions back garden.The last time I was this disappointed, was when I was 3 years old and I caught my dad eating the mince pies I’d left out for Santa Claus. Oh and the jerk sauce wasn’t even jerk it was half bbq, half forget about it…If Jeffry Epstein was a restaurant it’ll be this place. Avoid this place like swine flu. I would rather let Ted Bundy fit my bathroom doorframe with his trusted hammer whilst I’m at work, and my girl is in the shower singing a feminist rendition of Beyoncé’s Flawless.

The service was mediocre at best. I ordered the oxtails with mashed potatoes because there were no roasted potatoes. The Potatoes were lukewarm and the oxtails were salty/ fatty and tough. I was very disappointed and did not want to order something else because the waitress just seemed extremely disinterested. The non alcoholic beverages were inconsistent in their taste.The restaurant was highly recommended by a frequent customer( who I was treating to a Birthday Lunch.)...unfortunately I did not get to have the experience he always has. The food here is wonderful. This is by far my favorite restaurant in downtown Culver. During happy hour they have amazing jerk chicken tacos. The drinks are different but really good! I really like the old fashioned..it has a mix of both rum and bourbon. And I really like that they use a big ice cube. I love the Janga shrimp plate with red beans and rice with healing greens. The shrimp are so perfect in a spicy red sauce with onions and peppers. Everything is cooked just right and so full of flavor. They have a pasta version of this plate that comes with shrimp or has the option to get it with shrimp and muscles. The food is spicy in a good way. It is not overwhelming. Just the right amount to be full of flavor and not overkill. The staff is very polite..I really hope this place gets the attention it needs. It is by far better than other places in the area.

Two of us had a very nice lunch prior to visiting the nearby Farmers Market. I had the jerk chicken salad, very tasty with a nice little kick of heat and a very worthy tropical iced tea. The food is awesome and authentic. But the staff in the evening are some young adults and are more interested in talking to each other than serving the customers. No water was offered or given while we waited for 30 mins. Then only my meal was brought and my kid had to wait 15 mins more to get his meal. The waitress cheated me out of some funds for a drink I did not order, and very oily plantains that I brought to her attention and she still charged me for. As well as her and her server team were gossipping very loudly about the customers there and made me very uncomfortable. However, the drinks, the oxtail, and the curry goat were spectacular. And the chef was super awesome and the server was helpful to bring him to me when I had a question about one of the menu items. So this place isnt too bad, but the prices are way too high for phony services and oil drowned plantains that i couldnt really enjoy without, them being mostly oil flavored and falling apart.

I live in the surrounding neighborhood, and was excited to have a Jamaican place pop up.We ordered the jerk chicken and blackened tilapia. Opted in for the curry goat for my second visit along with a chicken patty. The goat was so tender and flavorful! I highly recommend. The patty was good, but I did want a little more kick, but the crust made up for it. As for drinks, I recommend the Island old fashion if you like whiskey. Its a refreshing take on a classic by adding the rum and angostura. My second choice of drink there if I want something lighter is the Mojito!

Overall, A great experience! My daughter invited me to an outing to Janga. A Jamaican theme food restaurant. Well, the wait for cocktails and food, a long wait. However, the atmosphere, Excellent! There is entertainment by way of a singer named Fernando.Good vocals and will take song requests. He indicated that he has played with such notables as Rick James and Marcia Gay. So I used to work a few blocks from Janga and would go there maybe once to two times a month. It has a nice outdoor seating area and food that is bar none. The shrimp and grits are by far my favorite; proceeded by...the rest of the menu . There are vegetarian options and you must order the healing greens as at least one side. This is probably the worst jerk chicken Ive ever had! It was all heat, no flavor and arrived freezing cold and over cooked. We ordered 2 different chicken dishes that both were jerk but they came with different, equally bad flavors. I splurged and got the jerk chicken and fried shrimp and it was barely worth $19.99. I got 4 measly pieces of shrimp and it was the only decent part of the meal. The wings were worst of all! They tasted frozen and were completely dried out, cold and over cooked. The service was also lacking where we had to chase down different waitresses to pay the bill. Not once did the waitress ask how the food was. I didnt even see our initial waitress again before we left the restaurant. We should have complained but didnt want to make a scene in front of our friends. I should also mention, we were all half way through our meal by the time my husbands plate arrived. Definitely not worth $80.

It has such great tastes. I got the curry chicken and spicy shrimp with potatos and rice and beans. I couldnt put my fork down the moment it hit my dishes. I ordered the oxtails with roasted potatoes and greens. The flavor of the food was good, but in was saddened by the quality and size of the oxtails. They were thin in cut and two of the pieces didnt have any meat that was eatable. I ended up buying my own oxtails the next day and cooked them myself.I will return and try something else.

I was so disappointed with this place. I spent nearly $30 for an oxtail meal with two sides. Plantain and muffins were extra. The worst part was that the oxtails had this weird taste to them. They tasted like they were maybe cooked and then frozen and then thawed out and heated again to serve. The seasoning too was not on point. Ive had much much better Jamaican food for a lot less that tasted a hell of a lot better. Im not sure who youre catering to but yall need to get it together over there.

The best Jamaican food Ive ever tried outside of Jamiaca! The jerk chicken sauce was amazing and a little spicy so if youre sensitive to spice, remember to order the hibiscus flower drink to go with it. The best Jamaican food I ever had. Beef patties were awesome. The jerk chicken beans and rice and plantains was amazing. The curry shrimp was so perfectly cooked and top knotch. Everything we ate made me so happy and stomach full. They have these mussels that made me do the happy dance. The happy punch and rum punch was Devine but the best thing about this whole experience was the owner made us feel amazing like we were at his home making us feel like family. Ive been here twice now and I will admit I am a bit disappointed by having a few dishes that were a bit salty. However, it does not deter me from trying other dishes. The veggie curry and the kale were the salty dishes but Ive had the kale before and it wasnt salty.On the last visit i tried the appetizer sampler. I enjoyed it overall but the jerk wings were a bit stiff and seemed like they were smoked. Smoked meat tends to be on the higher sodium side.If anything my experience is hit and miss. Tried to pickup a postmates order from here. I stood there and waited for 45 mins. I figured out they didnt even have a ticket for my order. They looked at my phone to see the customers order because they didnt have it on their end. They dont have an efficient system when it gets busy. I was so disappointed with the food and service. I had heard about janga on the radio and took my family visiting from Detroit there. We had to ask several times for water, utensils and straws. After receiving our food and being displeased with the flavor, I asked to cancel my to go order and was denied because it had been printed on the receipt. I have never heard of such foolishness. I visited on a wednesday. It was not too busy. The food was delicious. Fresh cod fish was used instead of salted cod fish which made a much healthier dish, with the same Caribbean flare. The high ratings for Derricks Jamaican restaurant must have been provided by non-Jamaicans or Jamaicans who are dont want to be unkind. The food is considerably below the quality of good Jamaican food. The curry chicken I had used non-spicy watered down curry and the chicken pieces were lumpy. The ox-tail was just ok. The rice and beans (we Jamaicans call it rice & peas) was not authentic. Plantains were too soft. True Jamaican restaurants include plantain, rice & PEAS, festival or johnny cake, and some kind of salad, included in the price of the meal. Not Derricks. Choice was 2 of 3 of green vegetable (?imitation calalou), a small serving of rice & beans, and mashed potatoes (which is not served in authentic Jamaican restaurants). The prices for food, drinks, and side dishes were way over the top. Oxtail was almost $25 with the 2 substandard side dishes, while they would be $14-$18 at true Jamaican restaurants with larger helpings and more good side dishes included. Needless to say, this is not the place to go to find true back-a-wall Jamaican cuisine. Derricks is overpriced, not very tasty, and therefore over-rated!

Update: Went back to give a second chance and was even more disappointed than before. I ordered Oxtail dinner at $26 (plus unexplainable tip of $6 I discovered on my card statement) for something that was not eatable. I reached out and informed them the food lacked taste and seasoning and was ignored.
