Juanita & Maude delivered an unforgettable dining experience for my boyfriends birthday! The spicy tuna tartare was a burst of flavors, and the house-made radiatore pasta was rich and comforting. But the real star was the chili-glazed crispy smoked spareribs & rice – mouthwatering and perfectly cooked. The ambiance was cozy, and the service impeccable. A celebration to remember! Highly recommended!

To dine at Juanita & Maude is to fall in love with Bay Area dining all over again.The caliber of bar menu, service, ambiance, and cuisine are beyond what you would expect from a local spot anywhere in the world, and would be fully satisfied to get at a 2* Michelin.Everything we had was outrageously delicious, but if I had to pick one thing not to miss from the current menu, it would be the swordfish. For my wife, the cannelloni.Absolute gem. 10/10.

The food was amazingly flavorful. The service was very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere was intimate but unpretentious. My date and I both agreed it was among the best restaurants weve ever been to.The portions are not huge... you likely wont leave feeling lethargic or overstuffed. We left feeling delightfully energetic and perfectly satisfied.

Its been a few years since I was able to visit Juanita & Maude, and it was like getting back together with a familiar friend! Atmosphere in the back outside was warm and like a cozy hug on a chilly night. Food continues to be delicious. Our group shared grilled shitake mushrooms and anchovy crostini to start, along with cocktails or wine (the wine list allows dinners to try something new or unfamiliar, which is awesome). Im not a fan of anchovy and found this bite to be something Ill try again! I had the Burger #1, back on the menu to celebrate the end of the year. Such a wonderful, flavorful reminder of the restaurants beginnings. Hubs had the swordfish and our guest had the pork loin. Everyone cleared their plates, which doesnt always happen. Finally, we split the beignets with egg nog filling and chocolate sauce. Sweet ending. Service was excellent!! Thanks to Daniel for his attentive service. I cannot wait to return.

Went there for a birthday dinner. The outside area is setup very well for dining, the staff courteous and considerate. Felt very safe dining out because of their actions. Now onto the food - wow! The fried chicken was very tasty with a great seasoned batter but the steak was cooked amazingly well. Do not miss the churros on the dessert menu and they have a good selection of specialized beers so make sure to try as well.

Really fantastic dining experience with seasonalmenus & great cocktails/mocktails. we came in the summer and I had the best rice I’ve ever tasted plus a delicious ahi tuna appetizer. their winter menu was great especially the pierogis. the only miss for us was the bread which was too dry.

We haven’t been inspired by the menus in the first couple of years but the current menu looked great so we decided that it was finally time to give it a try. The meal was thoroughly enjoyable and we also liked the new outdoor dining area. Good cocktails though I wished for a little more variety. The desserts were fantastic. We probably will be again frequently.

Wonderful neighborhood spot with warm service where they remember you from one visit to the next. Delicious comfort food that negates any need to cross the bridge to SF. Lovely outdoor, yet enclosed (i.e., not chilly) back deck. Great wines by the glass. Talented chef and dessert chef. And gorgeous fresh flowers in the bathroom!

I can without a doubt say that this is one of the best restaurants in Albany. Everything we ordered was delicious, and all made with seasonal ingredients. I would definitely make a reservation, as it can get quite busy, especially on the weekend. The outdoor patio is especially lovely, and a great place to sit on warmer nights.

Just have one word for this place. incredible. If this is out of your way then you should make the hike to go dine there.We were four of us and pretty much ordered the entire menu. Loved everything.Some items that stood out were the.squid salad, pork buns, dosa and the jerk chicken.This place Categorizes itself as American but I would say that this is international fusion cuisine.

Service and the atmosphere was great but the food is just so so. I feel like the menu items are not labelled correctly ie. when you have a dish called mushroom crostini I would expect to taste the mushrooms yet all I could taste was the tomato sauce. We had the lemongrass and coconut short ribs and couldnt taste the lemongrass nor the coconut. The delicious rice under the short ribs were actually quite delicious :)

One of the best dining experiences I have had in a while! The service was excellent, and the food was so fresh and delicious. Every course was better than the last. We got the black forest mousse cake (pictured).The only thing that could be improved was the level of noise inside the restaurant. It got very noisy. Besides that, I highly recommend it.

A great addition to the Albany dining scene, especially since the closure of Eugene. The menu, beer and wine list (including by the glass), cocktails, and service are great.Order several starters to share with your friends.The pasta dishes, tagliatelle this evening, are excellent. I had chicken with some of the best spatzle ever! Definitely get dessert with the wine pairings. We had one of each and they were all excellent!We phoned ahead on a Friday evening and they held a table for our group of five. Parking in the bank lot at the corner is free and unrestricted.

Juanita & Maude is undoubtedly a chic spot for a “Berkeley-Semi-Fancy” meal. The service is friendly and accomodating, and the space in the restaurant is well-utilized. However, after careful consideration of some of the dishes, the sense of “invention” falls a bit short. I’m a proponent for the BSF train that’s been heralding new spots like this, but it doesn’t work when I’m wondering if I could get twice the portion of a similar dish for half the price somewhere else.

My friends and I were looking for a place to eat before a concert in Albany and had no idea where to go. It just so happened that Juanita & Maude was across the street. We really didn‘t know what to expect and at the risk of sounding like a (..insert insult here..), having gown up in Paris, I haven‘t been impressed by restaurants in the US very often. This place is absolutely fantastic. From the salad to the dessert, not to mention the excellent cocktails, everything was on spot. Not a single faux pas. Fresh. Seasonal. Varied. It was delicious, and relatively speaking not even that expensive. The service was also great and the barmaid was super sweet. Do yourself a favor and try it! I will definitely go back.

Food was okay, but the service was pretty slow and I feel like the waiter just forgot about us at times.My main issue with our dining experience was that the restaurant completely forgot that it was supposed to be a birthday celebration. I clearly stated that this was a birthday dinner for my wife in the OpenTable reservation and I even called ahead of time to inquire about what they do for birthdays. They said that they would write the name of the birthday celebrant on the plate and put a candle in the dessert. I confirmed that they had marked down that this was a birthday dinner on our reservation for the evening.Dinner was decent, but nothing special. By the time the dessert came out, we had definitely been waiting a while for that point. Additionally there was nothing birthday about it. I wouldve said something at the time, but my wife didnt feel comfortable with that. I agreed as it was her birthday, if it was me I wouldve definitely made my unhappiness known.To rub salt into the wound, we had to wait 10+ minutes for our check after we finished because our waiter was in the back preparing someone elses birthday dessert.Long story short, I dont recommend this restaurant and I will not be returning to dine there again. Service is everything at restaurants, and Juanita and Maude falls extremely short of expectations.

I loved the experience here. We celebrated our daughters 1st bday here. Nice quiet dinner for three. The staff felt like family was super friendly and accommodating. This is me and my wife’s favorite place to get dinner in the east bay. The cocktails are amazing, wine selection is awesome, waitstaff is super pro, and the menu is always great. They are always switching up the menu which is great, it always feels like a familiar but new experience. Can’t recommend this place enough? They were featured on Check Please, we had booked marked this place over 3 years ago and finally got to try it as we were in the area. It did not dissppoint, drinks and food were amazing. We did not have a reservation but arrived upon opening and they sat us at the bar, which to me you almost always get better service. Julia was amazing she was the main bartender for the entire restaurant and our waitress, each drink was consistent and delicious. We started with two appetizer, the summer watermelon and the nori chips and dip, we enjoyed them so much we wanted to try the other two appetizers, entrees were great and dessert was on point, we will be back soon!

3 stars for this tough-to-peg, surprisingly expensive, but quality-ingredient neighborhood restaurant.Consistently crowded and busy with a local, older baby boomer crowd, service can be highly mixed and getting a prime table seems to be relegated to only regulars.While we certainly dont think a restaurant needs to be tied to one concept or region or cuisine, too often has the menu felt like a smattering of the chefs random pan-world favorites, which often presents a challenge to cohesive flow or collaboration between the dishes.Quality of food is good and presentations can be pretty at times, but the main hang-up we have is the lack of value; weve never made it out of Juanita & Maude for under $125/person, without a single box of leftovers and sometimes with a desire to seek a taco afterword.Compared to other restaurants in the area, or across the pond, it lacks refinement in certain areas and has never felt warm or welcoming.

I have not had the pleasure of dining in here yet, but I’ve gotten meals to go from there many times. I discovered them during the pandemic and my partner and I loved them so much that we had them cater our backyard wedding! Our guests raved about the food and we still get compliments about the food months later. Management could not have been kinder or more accommodating in helping us with our wedding. We cannot wait until we can go eat there in person. Until then we will keep ordering our food to go and enjoying it at home!

Cute small place with unique food choices!We had been wondering about this place for some time after living in Oakland for a few years when it opened. I will say it delivered an excellent evening experience that I would recommend for anyone in the Oakland area.First, the service here was excellent and attentive. Our waiter was extremely helpful and courteous and helped our experience be excellent.Second, we enjoyed the food very much. The appetizers were a strong start. We got papusas (excellent), tuna carpaccio (wow!) and the shrimp steamed bun (yum!). The tuna blew us all away. For our entrees we got the special burger and the risotto. None of our party of four were blown away by the entrees but there were a few factors that could have affected that… 1. The portion sizes were much bigger than anticipated and we were all very full from apps and 2. We did not order anything off the standard menu. Would definitely go back and try something that they offer on the staple menu.Cute patio! Don’t miss taking a peak before you leave!

A perfect takeout experience. I told them that my partner and I are isolating in anticipation of a visit to our parents and didnt want any exposure to people. The Maitred said it was no problem, took my CC info over the phone, and when I went to pick up the food he brought it out to my car and put it in my trunk. Totally contactless. The food was also fantastic. The cheeseburger was one of the best of my life, no exaggeration. The Mrs. Robinson cocktails were also really lovely. They even included a spice mixture to rim our glasses with at home! I cant wait to order from here again.

We revisited Juanita and Maude after a more than two year Covid-induced hiatus. A rare occurrence in our culinary forays but every item partaken was a gastronomic delight. Especially noteworthy was the flat iron steak, cut and grilled to a level I am not convinced is possible to replicate at home. The cut was unlike anything I’ve experienced, far superior to a filet mignon or rib-eye. Desert too was exquisitely prepared and presented, complimented with Cynar digestivo.Of note is Julia’s skills behind a well-endowed bar. If one is a cocktail cognoscenti, demanding perfect libations from ingredients to mixological acumen, Julia’s/J&M’s bar offerings won’t disappoint.Very pleased to reconnect with manager Nicholas, thank you for a thoroughly enjoyable evening!

It was our 49th anniversary - I still dont know how that happened - and we celebrated in the cozy atmosphere of Juanita and Maudes semi-outdoor, semi-garden space. We felt lavishly cared for in service and sublimely nurtured with exquisite fare. I chose the tomato and gem lettuce salad and green papaya and mango summer rolls. My husband had the galia and piel de sapo melon salad and catfish. The melon salad was edible art and it tasted as good as it looked. Then came dessert and the house made a very special chocolate fig tort and presented it on a plate with a chocolate happy anniversary greeting. Dont miss the coconut banana dessert. Everything was perfectly prepared, presented and delicious. This was a ten star dinner and experience.

5 years after this lovely little place opened just a block from me, Im pleased as heck to update my review to 5 stars. Theyve deserved it off and on over the years, with the biggest fluctuations in quality and consistency being in the cocktails. But now they have a really solid bar team doing innovative and delicious things, and as this joins an always-outstanding food program, I couldnt recommend it more highly.Chef Scott is *still* producing great food at a generally reasonable price point (for this level of quality), with a variety of Latin and Asian influences keeping things interesting. And now the cocktails measure up as well! The Glass cocktail on the current menu, with strawberry-infused gin and sabayon custard is unlike anything Ive had before, unique and delicious. And the previous cocktail menu also had some real stand-outs. The wine program has always been solid, as I understand it, but Im a cocktail guy, so... 😄On recent visits the food has been consistently inventive and delicious, with some memorable recent bites including the King Salmon Onigiri, Filet Mignon (they actually make it interesting and worthwhile!), and the now sadly departed (but mind-blowing) Umami Burger.The desserts, meanwhile, have *always* been excellent, and remain so with the combined team of Marvyn and Juliana bringing their respective experiences and cultural influences to create a more varied and exciting dessert menu than ever. The Smoked Chocolate Ganache was one of my favorites of late, but its ever-changing, so just trust that almost anything you try will be great. The stranger and more interesting it sounds, the more you should try it! Parmesan ice cream? Yes! (one of my favorite things ever from a prior dessert menu)The interior is nicely appointed and a good mix of casual with just the right amount of upscale feel to be good for date night, etc. The bar being situated right next to the door is a bit non-ideal however, since you get a regular blast of cold air as people come and go. The bar seats also arent particularly comfortable to lean back in, despite having seat backs which is not always to be found in bar seating. Nevertheless its nice to have a first-come bar option and a full bar at that.The back patio is the real win as far as seating goes, though. Covered and sheltered, but still open, nicely designed, good spacing between tables, heat if needed, but its usually not too chilly. A great outdoor, COVID-safe option!And the staff, well, theyre all delightful. This has always been a tight-knit and supremely welcoming group of people. Service is down to earth, professional but comfortable, and not at all stuffy. Lovely people.So J&M is highly recommended. Its now one of my favorite restaurants in the Bay Area!

I enjoy the clean food, enjoying the taste and the quality of the ingredients. I never walk away wishing I hadnt eaten that, which I do quite often at most restaurants. I have been doing yoga for 17 years so I can be quite particular to how certain foods make me feel and affect my performance. The service is unpretentious and friendly but professional. Food was top notch. The fried chicken was perfectly done... Crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. It is a pure savory fried chicken as opposed to a sweet savory combo. The drink I had (The Eleanor) was phenomenal, fruit but not too sweet and it makes the alcohol well. Also shout out to the female bartender for doing a women in power inspired drink menu. The fresh bread was a great addition...although not sure why they need to charge $5 for it. Skipped dessert because hello Mr Dewies is within walking distance like a 3 minute walk. Dont expect to get in and out quickly this is a place you go to take your time and the service matches that speed.All in all, Id definitely go back for that chicken and a drink.

To be honest, Id been uncertain about going to this new restaurant because Id heard some negative things, but I suspect that whatever issues had cropped up were likely early days problems that new places can experience. I do not hesitate to recommend Juanita and Maudes!!I had expertly prepared halibut. My dining partner had an equally well-prepared steak. We had crispy mushrooms and little dumplings as appetizers. Came here for dinner around 7 pm, definitely not too crowded at the time so we were able to be seated immediately. They serve family style so would recommend ordering a few dishes to share.Food quality was excellent and the service was fast - really enjoyed the soup, the pad Thai, and the chicken. Prices here were pretty reasonable so it wasn’t a hard decision to order some seconds. Would definitely recommend if you’re looking for good Thai in Albany!

One of the top five restaurants Ive been to in the Bay Area, and I dont say that lightly. The entrees are uniformly solid, the cocktails are both creative and satisfying, and the desserts are really something else. Juanita & Maude is THE perfect neighborhood restaurant: intimate and elegant, with food thats comforting yet elevated, and utterly satisfying! For a seemingly small menu, dishes span the categories so that theres something for everyone, from hearty meat to delicate seafood to earthy vegetarian. And the service was flawless: attentive without hovering, friendly but not overreaching, and the wait staff worked seamlessly together to maintain connection with all the tables even as the place became packed. With birthdays coming only once a year, Im going to have to invent special occasions to return here often. Or maybe just because, since it is a neighborhood restaurant after all, and the menu changes daily.

Ohh a hidden gem amidst many East Bay restaurants with common theme. Every course of dinner service was mind blowing. We started with steamed Buns which had burst of flavors, from sipcy to sweet than we moved on to Perogi and crispy Millet which were extremely well made and had fine balance of flavors and we ended dinner with carrot cake and chocolate mousse both of which were delicious. Besides food, drinks were nicely made and service was quick. Since they rotate menus we will definitely return back soon.

I took my wife and 1 year old daughter to Jaunita and Maude curbing our vacation to the Bay Area a couple months back. It was such a great experience- even with the pandemic going on- they made us feel safe and welcomed. All of the staff took health and safety very important. There was a beautiful outdoor patio dining that was straight out of a movie set. Even with all the high regard for the decor and staff- the quality and flavor of the FOOd STOLE THE SHOW!!! As we waited for our table, I asked friends who were just finishing dinner what they ordered. Hanger steak and it was beyond amazing was his reply. Sea Bass which was absolutely the best I have ever tasted, was her reply. They followed dinner by sharing the pumpkin tea cake which was, they glowed, fabulous! I knew we were in for a great dinner. We shared olives and arancini to start. Arancini is a little ball of rice, taleggio and mushrooms. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. The focus is on flavor/freshness (fab!) of each main ingredient by itself, rather than in the haute cuisine tradition of integrating the flavoring spices, seasonings, liqeurs, etc. with the main protein of each dish. Thus, the salty hot peppers on the broccoli did not add to the absolutely fresh, very-lightly-cooked brussels sprouts flavor but instead provided a not-unwelcome contrast to the sprouts.Similarly, the sauce and garbanzos accompanying the perfectly fresh and perfectly-cooked cod-&-mussels main acted again as a foil to the excellent flavor of the perfectly-selected seafoods (a couple more than the just 3 little Ft.Bragg mussles would have been appropriate, Chef Steve).Beverages: a very limited bar stock means few alcohol choices, but the offerings were interesting.A menu that offers black/green/herbal teas but turns out to only stock chamomile as the sole herbal choices? Silly and inexcusable, folks; get some peppermint & citrus teas!!Desserts: very limited but choice offerings. The chocolate torte was very good. The hint of amaretto biscotto in the pear tarts crust was subtle, superb (!), but the pumpkin-y cream sauce was flavorful but a distraction and distillation of the tart excellence.Juanita and Maudes presented two widely-experienced, mature diners with a very new, mains-forward approach to fine food . . .and, altho startled by thus different approach to presenting flavors, we will return to further explore whether and how we and Juanita and Maude are meant for each other.
