Weve been coming here for a variety of Japanese food. We especially like their daily daily selections of interesting fishes to try. And their daily fish broth is to die for. Need to go through and curate all my photos from our last couple of trips.

I recently dined at a fantastic sushi restaurant and had a wonderful experience. The ambiance was delightful, creating a pleasant and inviting vibe. One dish that stood out was the rainbow roll, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The fish was fresh and yummy. It was our first time here and we will definitely come back again.Seems that they specialize in Japanese aged fish 熟成, highly recommend if you are not a big fan of completely raw fish 😃 I also like their interior and it is more spacious as compared a few other Japanese restaurant I’ve been to in Fremont, and it is a very unique find in San Leandro.We came before 5:30pm. We didn’t have a reservation and were seated immediately. When we left there was a line. 😅 we came with our child and notice a lot of families too.

Came here on a Saturday evening and there were a lot of tables available, so we were able to be seated right away. There are a couple parking spots available in their private lot but there is also street parking available. The interior is beautiful and staff were super friendly and accommodating.The food was amazing, this is probably one of my new favorite spots in the Bay Area. The sashimi deluxe and estudillo and marina rolls were my favorite part of the meal. We also got chicken teriyaki which was super tasty as well. While the food might be a little pricey, the quality and taste makes up for it. Will be back soon!

It was a nice surprise in the neighborhood, the miso soup included some veggies, making it more fulfilling, and then the rolls from classic ones dragon, rainbow to their special ones, had a great flavor and texture . Im coming back soon for sure.

Loved the jazz music walking in and the Japanese aesthetic look. Great sushi and presentation. Loved the lobster roll, and the avocado was so creamy 😋. I would definitely eat there again.

This is my favorite sushi restaurant in the East Bay. The quality of the fish is very high. Presentation is good. Sometimes the rice in the rolls is cold, which isnt the way it is supposed to be. The prices are high so we cant go as often as we like. It is never busy, which boggles the mind.We had the ankimo, ika, amaebi with fried shrimp head, Toro medium fatty, salmon belly, sea trout, horse mackerel, kanpachi, kanpachi belly, 49er roll, lobster roll, scallop roll.

We visited for Christmas Day and were seated quickly, everyone was nice. You have to take your shoes off and some of the tables require you to sit on the floor. There are seat backs so you can pull your seat up to the table. There are some tables that have ‘wells’ or a place to sit with your feet hanging down. The older people in our group preferred this option. Since we had a group of 10 some of us had to sit down at the end of the table where you had to sit with your legs crossed on the floor.We ordered a bunch of different rolls, some tempura and a bowl of vegetable udon. The rolls were good. I mostly ate the salmon avocado rolls but I tried a few of the others my family ordered that were fancier.My kids prefer noodles so they shared the bowl of udon with their cousin. We also got a bowl of plain rice for my 6yo, she ate that and some noodles and shared with her cousin (it was a pretty big bowl of rice).The tempura was something to be desired. It was not crispy or crunchy at all. I wonder if someone forgot it in the window while they were busy bringing our rolls out? Fortunately they were nice and took it off the bill when my aunt let them know it was subpar, for this I would give them another chance and bump them to 4 stars.Everyone was nice and they took a family picture for us. I would go back and try it again. I would even try the tempura again, but just get one order instead of 2!

The fish is of good quality. It is expensive. prepared. You most definitely can find the same quality fish and rice elsewhere for less money.I see that they take negative reviews personal, they post up reviewers negative responses on their instagram and criticize it. Its distracting from their talent. Ive also experienced the server guy or owner make comments about my ordering too much and their concern for me wasting food. Ive never wasted food. If I order alot its because i recognize that the food is great and im complimenting the chef. Ive never been criticized for ordering too much food. All sushi restaurants Ive been to give me extra food because they know I appreciate their food, I will eat it all and I tip well. As much as I love this place for its variety of fish, i feel more welcomed in other spots and I dont have to break the bank for it.

Went there for a late night dinner. It was nice place. Service was good and the restaurant looks nice. We ordered sashimi combo, ramen, chicken teriyaki, fried chicken wings, and a couple of skewers. Everything tastes great. Only thing was the teriyaki chicken was a bit dry.

Food is pretty solid. Ive been to Japan repeatedly for the past 15 years since I have family there and I come visit them regularly. If the food I ate whenever I visit Japan is 10/10, this restaurant is a solid 8.5/10.A lot of sushi places in the Bay Area start out with good quality sushi that slowly degrades into subpar quality. I hope this restaurant retains or even improves the quality of their food for the years to come.

Favorite sushi spot in the East Bay, been here a couple times now. Sushi is great quality, definitely recommend the Broadmoor roll and grilled fish. Love the atmosphere, service is quick and friendly. Do not miss out on the great sake selection. Have yet to try their tatami seating options (most likely need to make reservations for that).

I follow a Google review to try the Omakase Don. Its yummy & fresh plus look and taste delicious, I end up go back to get the 6 package. The restaurant itself just became a pick up place. No customers get to enter the door into the restaurant. I did think its a bit pricey since we are not allowed to enjoy our meal inside the restaurant. And the restaurant now looks like a warehouse stocking all kinds of boxes. So one star minus from 5 for its price & its vibe.

It’s been a journey searching for a sushi restaurant in the east bay. This little gem was found from social media. The sushi chef/owner (Jack) has been making and perfecting the art of sushi for almost 30 years, and his craft is immensely appreciated. We sat at the sushi bar and Jack lead us through the process and it was amazing.

3rd time here this month. The sashimi is wonderful. Some great traditional dishes on top of very inventive dishes. The first time we were here I had a piece of yellowtail that was one of the best pieces of fish I’ve ever had, which is odd because I’m usually not a yellowtail fan, but it was perfectly seared (millimeters) that added an amazing complexity of texture and flavor. Had the truffle salmon tonight and it’s a unique pairing of flavor that grew one me over the course of the meal

The interior attracted me to try this place. I got the spicy scallop roll and the blend of raw scallop with avocado was perfect. I also got the salmon maki and the salmon had the texture of salmon belly and was so fresh and delicious. The main stair however was the rice. I’ve never eaten such fluffy rice it feels like a blanket on my tongue. The cheesecake was delicious. Very friendly staff and quick service.

Kaisen Don is definitely a neighborhood gem. I appreciate the minimalistic decor, the servers are very nice and attentive and the food is the shining star. All their Dons are top notch and the specials Ive tried are really stellar. The sushi rolls, we ordered the dragon and lion king were pretty simple nothing out of the ordinary, but the Omakase Don, the Rainbow Don, basically any Don you cant go wrong.I need to come back here and try there different dishes such as $1 oyster specials every Wednesday and 1/3 tray of Uni. All in all I recommend this restaurant and feel it is a welcome addition to the neighborhood.

Average sushi place with reasonably priced bowls. I expected better quality fish and unagi and was a little disappointed. The spicy scallop roll was not spicy. The service was attentive but the servers were not fluent in English which led to some confusion.

Super nice owner Jack. Great interior spacing and authentic design. Really good mini Omakase don and rainbow don + add on ikura that hit the spot and tasted fresh. The sushi rice with vinegar was on point too. I heard Japanese people eating here at lunch time so I know it’s a good place, even the miso soup tasted quality. This place really deserves more than a 4.3 star!! And we drove from el cerrito and it was worth it. Definitely coming back !!

What a wonderful discovery. This place is a gem of culinary delights. The seafood is very fresh and the selection is impressive. I went on Wednesday which is dollar oyster night I was pleasantly surprised to find fresh plump oysters opened expertly. I saw they had Toro on the menu so I had an order of Toro nigiri and the quality was very good. The rice on the nigiri was done just right and did not detract from the experience like some other places in San Francisco. I ordered the Hamachi Kama but they were sold out that night, the waitress came back and offered me Amber Jack kama. Amberjack or kanpacho kama is a rare delicacy since they dont sell the color separate from the fish usually. It takes him about 20 minutes to grill, so dont order this if youre in a hurry. The skin and fins came out crispy and delicious like chicharrones and the meat inside was firm yet moist. This has got to be one of the best kama experiences Ive ever had. Overall if youre a foodie looking for a new place to explore, kaisen Don will not disappoint you with its quality or breadth of selection. You guys should check this place out as soon as you can.

I love their interior! They have some traditional-looking elevated wooden bench seats, but the server wouldnt seat us there, even though there were plenty of open spots. :(Different servers kept checking back with us to order, which made us feel a little rushed.We purchased the Groupon online, which can be used for rolls of any kind- special rolls, rolls, and hand rolls on their menu, only. We ordered 3 different rolls- the Lion King, the Davis, and the Sunset. Also, note that tea isnt complimentary here!The rolls tasted okay- the Davis was actually my favorite, which came as a surprise because its made the most simply (fish, rice, avocado). Their fish tasted fresh and was yummy. However, the flavor in the Lion King and Sunset rolls are really lacking compared to other establishments. Also (and this is the MAIN takeaway from my review!), their rolls are TINY!!! Easily 50% the volume of other places in the Bay. 3 rolls will usually fill me and my husband right up, but both of us were still quite hungry after these 3 here, and went elsewhere to grab some tacos after leaving!Additionally, the moment we took our last bite of sushi off the tray, the server came right over and asked to take everything away. We were still chewing and had to wait a minute to respond! This was really inconsiderate and didnt help our impression of being rushed out of there.The price was okay with the Groupon, but we would never come back otherwise due to the abysmal quantity-to-price ratio here.

First thing to know is that this place is pricey. For a donburi place, the lowest youll be spending is $18 for a small fish and $12 for a small pork belly bowl so it might not be for everyone. That being said, this place has really fresh fish and makes great rice giving it a great combination for the food they make! I had the truffle oil seared salmon bowl and the meat was nice and bright red, soft textured, and rich in the salmon oils I love so much. Mixed in with the truffle oil, it makes for quite a unique flavor! Will definitely come back here again.

Pretty good Don (rice bowl) shop. They specialize in fresh seafood thats imported, however they do have the more regular Don like egg and beef. Pricing is a bit steep, anything with dish change range from 15 to 30!! Non seafood are around 12. The star of the restaurant is their uni which can be bought as a Don, in addition or on the side. Uni is expensive, but is around market price compared to other shops. Food is decent, but just a bit pricey for a quick meal, even for fish.

A really small place that could easily be missed if not paying attention. I have to be honest I went with a pretty low expectation. Ordered a omakase don and a kaisen don. I cant speak for the kaisen don, because I didnt eat it, but the omakase was amazing! Far exceeded my expectation. Fish were fresh, rice was cooked perfectly and seasoned with vinegar. 12 different variety of fishes are very distinct and flavorful. Definitely recommend! I would say that it is an alternative to amami, though I still think amami omakase is a bit better.

The first thing I want to get out of the way is that if you were expecting a replication of Tsukiji Market or a more authentic Japanese chirashi don youre going to be missing one big thing: the rice.Normally I wouldnt point out something that seems to inconsequential but since its a location that leans marketing heavily on being inspired by Tsukiji, I was expecting it to feature the more heavily vinegared rice from Japan.Without it, even though the ingredients were buttery and soft, you get the distinct impression that it feels theres too much rice. Some places mitigate this with sauces, like a poke bowl or similarly inspired chirashi dons. Kaisen does stick to being authentic there, you get just the fish / sea food, but without the strongly vinegar laden rice you get in Japan, its going to fall short of expectations for those who are looking for a taste of Tsukiji.But at the end of the day, its not bad and its in my neighborhood and I always appreciate more options. The 20% off during soft opening till the 17th makes it a good deal, plus the customer service is very friendly and attentive. The decor is trendy and clean.They were told me I could request more vinegar next time i order so Ill try that and keep praying that some place is bold enough to offer the good rice.

The first disappointment I encountered was the amount of food for the price. My wife and I ordered chicken teriyaki don, unaju don, and three sushi rolls, and the total (not including tip) was a little over $100. Note: We came to the restaurant at 1:57pm and didnt know that they close at 2:00pm on the Wednesday that we visited. They let us know that they were about to close, but gave us the option of ordering to-go. For the amount of money, it was more like paying for the atmosphere of the restaurant than the actual food (which we didnt even get to dine-in). If they were still going to commit to preparing last minute orders, then they should have also committed to preparing quality food.Now, the second disappointment my wife and I experienced was the food. She ordered the chicken teriyaki don, and the green salad that was included was too warm and salty. There could have been a little more rice, but that is generally up to personal preference. The chicken was bland, and included in the don was a potato salad that looked suspicious (ie. she wasnt sure what was in it so she didnt eat it). I ordered the unaju don, and the unagi was overcooked or something because it was too mushy and bland. It definitely was not satisfactory, and I had to spend a lot of time nursing this dish to finish it because it was not that good. My wife liked the sushi that we ordered (dragon roll, estudillo roll, and orchard roll), but I thought it was meh. Most of them fell apart, and I have had more satisfactory sushi rolls elsewhere.My wife says that she would be willing to give this place another try because maybe we came at a time where they were getting ready to close and so the quality was not all that good. I, on the other hand, would not visit this place again for the price and the amount of food. I wouldnt mind dropping $100+ for quality food/food experience, but this place would not be it.

Sushi had great flavor. However, was very disappointed with Tempura appetizer...was not crisp at all and was definitely lacking in flavor. I ordered two California rolls for pick up. One with imitation crab and the other with real crab. Trying to save money I can only guess, they put both orders in one container and my sister has an allergic reaction to the crab. I know it was my fault for not separating them correctly. Simply delicious sushi. I had the omakase and it did not disappoint at all. Every piece of fish is good quality and enjoyable. Even if you don’t order the omakase, you must try the tachiou (large head hairtail) which is a surprising delight. The servers are very attentive. They currently don’t offer paper menus and use an app instead which is a minor annoyance, but the servers helped explain the options to us. I’m happy that Kaisen Don moved from SF to San Leandro !

Kaisen Don is a great go-to as I live near by, so its great whenever I crave sushi. Their fish quality is consistently good and their prices are fair. I recommend ordering any of their don (rice bowls) and I particularly like their rainbow don and omakase don. They also have various weekday and happy hour specials, of which Ive only had their oysters so far, which are a good value and tasty! The restaurant itself is on the small side and can get full during peak hours, so I recommend making a reservation, even a few hours in advanced.

We visited during their opening promotion which offered 20% off your entire meal! The sashimi bowls were very good, definitely a couple steps up from your cheap sushi place. It is a small restaurant so there maybe a wait to get seated. I would go again if I wanted to splurge on some good fish, but its a bit expensive for me to go regularly. Would recommend!

Its a little pricey, but its worth it for the quality - especially compared to all other sushi in the area, like Sakesan and Yama. Staff is super friendly and, while its a little cramped inside and could use with a little sprucing up, its definitely a hip location. Ordering from their website is super easy too.Love this place.

Theres a focus on optimizing turnover, so coming a bit later (i.e. 8:00) if you want to ensure no one will be looking over your shoulder to hurry you out the door. Omakase don is pricey, but a standout from other bowls, though we also liked the truffled salmon. Fish is good, if not outstanding, and high standard of presentation seems to drive non-stop instagramming at many tables.
