Great place! The ramen is always so full of flavor and so filling. I loved the sides we ordered. The fried gyoza, takoyaki, and the California roll were all so tasty. Definitely recommend

Very pleasant surprise to find such a good Japanese restaurant in Santa Cruz. We came into town planning to go out for a nice dinner but after feeling a little under the weather and seeing Kaito on yelp we decided to get some ramen there. Weve had ramen in Japan and know the good from the bad and the tonkotsu really hit the spot. Five star experience. Get the chili oil.Sapporo on draft + tonkotsu = happy customers.
I orderedAKA TONKOTSi paid around $16.00 tax incl.The pic on the wall showed something completely different. It shows a piece of meat and vegetables.I ordered to go.They gave me a big plastic bowl, but inside of it a very small plastic container with the ramen soup in it.Basically i paid $16.00 for a small bowl of ramen without meat. I felt cheated!

Pretty okay for the area (there isnt much Asian food around Santa Cruz thats worth getting). They put corn in their ramen which is kind of weird. Service is good and the food is priced decently.
It was fun to stop in I was buying more regularly but I pointed out they were charging more than the sign said at the counter. All I got was an “oh” so on principle I just won’t be coming back to support. Will just purchase elsewhere.. but as long as it was worth it to not update your signs or charge what it says.

Their black garlic tonkatsu is scrumptious. I just wish they had a regular restaurant so I didn’t have to feel bad about throwing away a bunch of plastic when eating here.

We used to visit Santa Cruz a lot and Kaito was always the default when we don’t know what to eat. I love spicy garlic ramen specifically. But we haven’t come to Santa Cruz for almost two years and today we found the store was relocated to a shopping mall. I was a little hesitate but quickly found it’s still the same owner and gladly found it’s still the same quality!
I am so satisfied with the service and quality of food presented here. I love that they have gluten free noodles as a option. This is my new spot.
I used to loooove Kaito but lately they have not been good.My most recent order was mostly noodles & not enough broth. The meat was not very good and was served cold. The broth was wayyy less flavorful than it used to be. It didn’t come with the yummy veggies it used to come with.& the order I got before this one tasted burnt and nasty.It’s too bad since they are literally our only ramen place.
Twice Ive ordered veggie ramen with no tofu and both times I received a fraction of the vegetables they actually have to offer. Their other bowls are packed full of veggies such as corn, seaweed, bok choy, etc. Whereas the veggie ramen has green onion, cabbage, and carrot. Its the saddest ramen Ive ever - had lacking flavor and for $20?! I reached out to management and they have yet to acknowledge me. I will never be eating here again.
This place can get packed around lunchtime, and rightly so. Being someone that has lived all over the bay area and gone to Japan several times I can attest that this is high-quality Ramen. The Tonkatsu broth is rich, creamy and amazing. I was lucky and got a huge slice of pork with my bowl. There was a bit of confusion with orders and it did take a while for my food to arrive but I would say it was definitely worth it. It’s not totally Tokyo style Ramen, it has the corn and extra scallions, but really good! I will definitely come back again
So sad to say that the new location has really lowered the quality of the food. The ramen was nothing like it used to be and I hate that it comes in a plastic bowl. I hope they can return to their previous quality one day.
The best ramen in Santa Cruz county...okay, the only ramen in Santa Cruz county. That said, their Tonkotsu Ramen with Chashu is delicious and well made. Definitely add the ramen egg and any of the list of additions. The JaJa Ramen is delish too if youre into spicy pork ramen! Their tempura leaves a little to be desired, it is a bit too doughy for my taste, but overall Kaito is great!
I was fairly disappointed with this restaurant given all the positive reviews. We got to sit down quickly, but then had to wait 20 minutes for our waiter to get our order. In the mean time when I tried to ask a bypassing waiter for attention he told us that we are not his table. The menu looked very promising with a list of nice broths and good prices, however our ramen arrived lukewarm. The pork was delicious, but the broth was just not flavorful enough. Overall this place is not the best place for ramen given that you can drive to south bay and have some delicious ramen there.
Our favorite date spot! The ramen is always delicious and sushi is fresh. The service is also amazing, servers are super friendly and the meal always comes quickly. I highly recommend!
I love coming here for good ramen. I order the charsu tonkasu with extra pork and egg and it always fills me up and keeps me warm. I also will add chicken katsu in it when Im really hungry. Ive never had food here I didnt enjoy, when its busy expect a bit of a wait but it is always worth it.
My son loves the idea of this place. Personally, I think they can do alot better. Long waiting times for any service. The waitress forgot some of our order. Our food came before any napkins or utensils. And it was very dirty where we were seated. I wanted to leave but my son really wanted to stay. It isnt that big of a place but it was 3 hours for just the two of us. Mostly just waiting time. Also, very dirty bathroom.Its too bad the previous business closed, they were way better.
If the scale only included ramen restaurants in Santa Cruz, 10 out of 10. In all the ramen Ive ever had, 6.8 out of 10. The portions are huge, noodles are okay, broth is good but very salty towards the bottom of the bowl. Kind of pricey but worth it for my ramen fix. The broth is right on the line between very good insta ramen and decently made from a traditional ramen cart, slightly towards the traditional cart.
The chicken Amaki was delicious as was the Tonkatsu ramen. We also tried a dragon roll, edamame (well spiced but over cooked) and tempura shrimp and veg which were nice.Kaito does not have the selection that some of the better Japanese tapas places in the Bay Area. But then, the prices also referent that. And the atmosphere is nice and the waiters are friendly.We arrived at 5.15- they open at 5 and walked straight into an available table. The food arrived fairly quick, but the waiters were too busy to check in on us during the meal. You definitely have to be a bit assertive if you want their attention.

The best ramen in Santa Cruz, but not the best Ive ever had. When it comes to ramen in Santa Cruz, there is not a whole lot to choose from. Over the hill its a different story, but Kaito is only one of two places in the Santa Cruz area (that I know of) that has ramen, the other being Oasis Tasting Room & Kitchen over on River Street. Kaitos Ramen is way better in my opinion, and is pretty decently priced. The portion is very generous and the broth was very comforting and flavorful. Also the sushi here is not half bad either. Good Japanese food in general seems to be hard to come by around here, so I think Kaito will be my go to spot in the future. I really want to come back and try their udon and Japanese curries. The restaurant itself is pretty small, so dont be surprised if theres a wait at dinner time.
I LOVE the ramen. And its worth it to order the egg in it. Sushi is ok. And the drinks you order by the can or bottle, theyre also over priced. But if you just order your food to go and take it to beer30. Its a perfect dinner. ;)

After a day on the beach, my two young boys (4 & 7yo) and I met my sister here. Anyone who has been around young children knows how hungry they get after a day on the beach. The adult orders were brought out but the kids food was still MIA after 10 min and so was the waiter. I stopped another waiter twice and all he could say was, I let your waiter know already. I told him twice to have the waiter come to our table and nothing! 20 min after the adult food was brought out, no kids food, no waiter, I was leaving with the kids to go get them pizza across the street. As we were walking out, our waiter finally showed up. All he had to say was, The kitchen has been making a lot of mistakes tonight.. I left and my sister stayed to pay the bill. No discount was offered and only another employee making similar excuses was offered. Too bad because the food is good but what they did and the unprofessional excuses was frankly just a mean thing to do to a customer and his two young boys.
Our family loves this restaurant. The soba and ramen are excellent and tasty, the sushi selection is a little limited, but good quality, and the range of appetizers is traditional and delicious. Were regulars!
This was my favorite ramen/sushi place to go to while I was living in Santa Cruz! I have yet to try their sushi, but all of their ramen options are very good! Their karaage was always a must whenever I would visit. Overall I highly recommend this restaurant if youre looking for some ramen!
I came here on a saturday night at 8pm when the restaurant was busy but not full.The service to start off was very slow it took at least 15 minutes for someone to come take our drink order, and they took food order at the same time . The food and the drinks came at the same time, but for some reason my wifes food came at least 10 minutes later than mine which shouldnt happen in a restaurant. The food was exceptional and the servers were friendly, and the environment was relaxed and unique. They had low tables up on a stage where you had to take your shoes off and sit on the floor like a traditional Japanese restaurant. The positives definitely outweighed the negatives this we will come back again..
This is not your typical “mall food”. We picked up some ramen and curry tonight and it was absolutely amazing. They close at seven (at least on Sundays) so don’t miss an amazing dinner! GO GET SOME!!!

Went to Tokyo last year to up my ramen game and Kaito definitely deserves 5 stars for their ramen. Very tasty rich broth and tender pork. Tried sushi a couple times and was disappointed both times, so I only eat ramen there about twice a month and go all the way to Sushi Maru in San Jose for sushi.
I was pleasantly surprised to find such good ramen in Santa Cruz.Im a huge fan of ramen. I grew up in Los Angeles, arguably the best city in the country for ramen. Ive been to some of the best ramen shops in LA, Chicago and even Japan when I was younger. My point is that I know ramen.Im not saying this is one of the top ramen shops in California. It isnt. But it was great ramen. Ive been spoiled with ramen so when I go to random ramen shops Im usually disappointed, especially if they arent in major cities.Given that Santa Cruz is so small and this is the only real ramen place, I was expecting average/mediocre ramen. I was so pleasantly surprised to be wrong.I had the tonkotsu ramen and would definitely recommend it. The broth, noodles, pork, and vegetables were all great.This is a solid ramen shop.
Kind of disappointing that the egg doesnt come with it. My go-to food when I travel is ramen, and its kind of odd that you have to pay extra for it. Other than that, its alright. There is a decent selection along with additions if you want to pay more for them.
Was doing an order for doordash from here, and we showed up around 5 to 7 minutes before the order was supposed to be done, so I expected a short wait, but it wasnt ready even close to in time. When it was supposed to be done, we were told there would be another 5 to 10 minutes, which was a lie, it was nearly 20 minutes of waiting AFTER it was supposed to be done. The waiting staff was nice about the whole ordeal and the food smelled nice, but that does not even come close to negating the wait and loss of money
Flavorful ramen, crispy tempura, creative fresh sushi, attentive service, eclectic ambiance, centrally located in Pleasure Point, a cozy beach town. We felt unhurried and very relaxed here. We highly recommend this ramen hot spot. Do order the Tonkostsu ramen!
Always a great experience at Kaito. This time I had kara-age curry and some nigiri. The curry is always good, especially on a rainy day like today. Their nigiri was excellent: actual sushi rice (unlike other sushi places in the area that wont be named) and great cuts of fish (we had some great salmon and tuna). My girlfriend ordered the small tonkotsu ramen, which was a new addition to the menu. It was the perfect size for her and delicious as always. This was the busiest Ive ever seen Kaito so service was understandably a bit slower. They felt the need to give us some sashimi on the house (the longer wait was totally fine though!), which was an incredibly delicious gesture!
Best ramen in the region. Great Tonkatsu and Shoyu. Traditional tables are available. Always has a few good beers too Sushi is a nice add-on but stick to the ramen.

I have enjoyed my sashimi ordered at the sushi bar every single time and the price has been very fair. The ramen is decent too but the sashimi is what talks for me (Specially when I let the chef decide the choices).
Well, It did not start out too well.waiter didnt seem to catch my order at all. One of my friends ordered Udon Noodle soup, and my other friend and I ordered Sushi to share, requested some appetizers and an order of Miso Soup for also. When reading back the order he left off my Pink Dragon and the MisoWell, the Udon Soup came first, then the Sushi, but no plates. We were expecting them to eventually arrive but they didnt. Anyway, 5 minutes later we managed to flag the waiter down and asked for plates and for the rest of our order - the apps and Miso soup should have arrived first right?The food was good and the Miso was pretty awesome. But the service could have been a lot better.
Spicy garlic broth was pretty awesome, Hamachi avo rolls were good, great service. Only complaint: tea could have been hotter as even the ramen soup was so.
The pot stickers here are my absolute favorite. They come in a delicious garlic sauce that takes them to the next level. The ramen is tasty too, of course.
I’ve never written a review for a good food, but I’m writing this review for a extraordinary service. There’s one worker who ignored me for a while and the owner( at least he seems like the owner) on the bar is very concerned about my food, and even gave me free samples when it’s not arriving in time (the food actually didn’t take too long). The food it self is pretty good in the context of Santa Cruz. I would recommend everyone to go there.
Fore warning ... this is a 5 star review cause i am comparing it in Capitola area not Japan or San Jose or LA. The true rating to me would be 3 . Its expensive for what you get because we are so close to the ocean. If you ordered a hard boiled egg you get that a well done hard boiled egg. Its not runny. The staff is friendly and its the only Ramen place i know in Capitola but you might want to try the curry rice and karage. This was a pleasant surprise.
I got the spicy miso ramen and it was bad because it literally tasted like water. The appetizer and the volcano roll were really good and my friends got tonkatsu ramen which was average they said.

We had the Tonkotsu ramen, fried chicken, and a small pack of Tuna rolls. It was amazing as always. Kaito rivals my favorite ramen in L.A., Tatsu, which says a lot.

Weve been going to Kaito since it first opened. It boasts the best (the only) ramen, freshest sashimi in the Santa Cruz area; we no longer go anywhere else for Japanese food.
Ramen was decent but overpriced - 13.50 for a tonkatsu ramen and they charge even more if you want more than 1 slice of pork (?) and extra if you want an egg (??? thats not included?).
KoJi (owner/Sushi chef) is a very nice, relaxed, gentleman. His staff are a very happy crew, also. Hands down best sushi and ramen in town. Super affordable too, they could charge way more and I would still eat there as much as possible. I could live on the pork bone ramen broth.
Excellent curry. Just be aware that the default has chicken in it, is not what youd expect. Sub 1oz worth. Get the katso option if you actually want chicken.

It’s a good Japanese restaurant with an attached parking lot, but the number is not large. The dining environment is comfortable and suitable for family gatherings. The slightly spicy curry is not suitable for children. The char siu ramen soup is rich and highly recommended. Fried dumplings and fried chicken are also great, spicy garlic The barbecued pork ramen soup is a little light, and it would be better if it was richer.
The best ramen Ive ever eaten. Very nice place very typical and, apparently, very popular. I recommend going early.
I was able to enjoy the taste of Japan that I hadnt had for a while since I came to America.

2023-05-03 18:19:54First time at the Ramon Kaito. Its located in the Capitola Mall food court. When I saw they had sushi on the menu, I had to try it. Its not just noodles here. Im soo glad I stopped by to eat. I really liked the shrimp tempura roll. $9.50 and Im definately coming back. They made it fresh, even the tempura was fresh crunchy. I love sushi, Im soo glad to have found another local spot that makes a shrimp roll to my liking. The food court in the Capitola mall has a huge dining room to eat in. Very clean with restrooms available.

Very disappointed, the soup had a terrible aftertaste kind of like the smell of a barnyard and they only give you one piece of meat which was at least tender, little to no veggies and some soggy seaweed. This did not scratch that itch, really hope they figure out whatever’s up with that aftertaste.

2023-08-12 15:14:27I used to get ramen at Kaito when they were near pleasure point. Now that they are in the mall, Ive order sushi twice. The mall food court doesnt have the greatest ambiance (perhaps take the food to go), but Kaitos sushi is AMAZING & really cheap. Its fresh & tastes delish. Highly recommend it. I look forward to trying out their ramen again.

They are locals, and my husband and I love to visit and try all their favorite restaurants when we’re in town.Kaito means ‘meeting’ in Japanese. We had a delightful experience sitting out on their patio, during the perfect time before sunset. It was warm and not too breezy. Surrounded by succulents and passion fruit vines, it was such a nice setting.They serve traditional style tonkotsu ramen, which hails from the Southern prefecture of Fukuoka in Japan. Their broth contains a mix of chicken and pork, but they do have a vegan broth available upon request. Add all kinds of toppings like a soft boiled egg (highly recommended) and sea veggies.They have a full sushi bar so you can enjoy sashimi and fresh hand rolls of your choice. Our waiter was very nice. I ordered hot green tea and the refills were welcomed and soothing.Price-wise, it is not cheap. For 3 bowls of ramen and tip, it came out to be over $70.
