Love this spot. The staff are very courteous and the fish is great quality, no frills and no mayo sauces. I always spend more than intended because it’s so good. I especially love the kanpachi (amber jack) and agedashi tofu.

Reviews did not match what we experienced. We were seated quickly for dinner. And there were a steady stream of customers. Very disappointed with sushi rolls and the apps. Sushi rice did not taste seasoned and texture was off. Id come back for the udon, everything else was meh.

They didnt have the option for bento boxes for dinner (Or at least, not in the menu), so I ordered a Tempura dinner with a side of Sashimi. The pieces of Sashimi were tiny, but the Tempura plate was huge (for two people easily). Flavor was good.The bill was very expensive for this unbalanced meal.You can tell is a very authentic Japanese restaurant, but they still dont have the right idea about what locals expect as normal portions.

A neighborhood staple, Koma Sushi is the quintessential family restaurant. Its got the aged carpet, storied walls and employees who are friends or related. The sushi is good, not mind-blowing, but solid. My favorites were the cooked/seared nigiris and hand rolls. The waitresses are really sweet and the chefs are always having a fun conversation. Theres a decent amount of parking and it wasnt too busy when we went at 5pm. Worth coming by if youre looking for a safe sushi option.

Amazing food! came on a wednesday evening and it seemed like a popular time yet our food got served so quickly! We got the gyoza, salmon and avocado rolls, chicken teriyaki, and tempura. Would definitely come back!

Wow - really bad. We ordered two of the $21 king crab rolls, chicken yakitori, gyoza, and beef teriyaki, totaling $101. The crab rolls had nearly NO crab in them. Some pieces did not have a single piece of crab in it and it had to eat it with my hands since they fell apart immediately. The yakitori tasted like pork…. And the gyoza were pan fried but limp and soggy. Horrible and angering.

Pretty nice little sushi place in downtown Palo Alto. Selection of rolls were good, but not too many specialty rolls. Also, roll size is not very big. Having said that, the food was really good and I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in town. Check it out!

What a great place for sushi in downtown PA. Dont come here to party, come here to enjoy an awesome selection of sushi and sake. Excellent sake menu, from simple to complex. Ordered some really simple dishes including Kappa Roll, which started falling apart as I went to pick it up with my chopsticks, the Niku Udon was good. The sukiyaki beef felt old and maybe a little overcooked but the rest of the noodle bowl was decent.

Since my favorite Kama moved in with Kanpai it has been a big problem. Latest issue is with indicated open hours. Lunch is now 11 to 1:30. I do not live nearby anymore, so it is unlikely that I will be back again, no matter how good the food is. No service, even though the Open sign was on display.

If you want to sit down at a place that finds pride in everything they do, this is the place to spend your coin. The place is clean, the staff is kind. They care about presentation. When facing your chopsticks in the correct position is important to host (which it was) then you know important things like food prep quality is also important. The fish is great here. The sauce is great. We came for gyoza and a roll and left after eating four rounds of food. Its been so long since we had good sushi, we completely gorged ourselves, and well be back.

Honestly the worst sushi I’ve ever had in my life. The food is so bad that I’m literally taking the time out of my busy schedule to write this review, it would be disservice to others if they entered the restaurant without prior warning.We ordered spicy tuna roll, salmon avocado roll, and yellowtail scallion roll. The rice was mushy and tasteless, they also really skimp out on the fish for their rolls. For what you’re paying ($18 total for three rolls), the food quality is not worth it at all and the taste is just absolutely unacceptable. I’m so baffled by my experience here and do genuinely wonder how this place managed to survive the pandemic, perhaps it is one of the only places that serve sushi in Palo Alto? This establishment would not stand a chance in metropolitan places like New York, where the competition and standard for sushi is a lot higher. This whole experience is making me rethink about dining out in Palo Alto.

While I did enjoy my meal, everyone in our party disagreed with the 24 rating for food. We stuck to sushi and rolls, which were all pretty good but nothing was excellent. The prices were very reasonable; we thought they undercharged us... perhaps they did since they messed up our order twice. The waiter did recommend an excellent $30 bottle of sake, which he brought after we rejected his $90 and $65 bottles. Decor was very nice.

They just raised all of their prices (by anywhere from $.50 to $2/roll), so unfortunately I cant brag anymore about their sushi being the cheapest around, but their food is still super delicious with really fresh fish at decent prices. Their soft shell crab hand roll is a particular highlight. Parking is difficult -- there are only a few spots directly attached to the building as well as a small lot behind.

Vibrant restaurant with some character, good for a casual date, but not a special night out. Sushi was about average in comparison to similar sushi restaurants I have tried, but this is the first I tried in Palo Alto, so I do not know where it stands in the area. We paid 30 USD per person for a normal meal without appetizers, which to me is more expensive than it was worth, but I guess this is comparable to the prices of the area. Even though I had made a booking, they could not find it. Waiters were kind and the special offers were interesting. Overall, I would go back, but not excitedly.

Taste really weird, the seafoods here are not fresh at all, especially the California roll, definitely you do not want to eat that, tastes like garbage.Well, the service was fine but I had a really hard time communicating. I ordered dragon roll and the server repeated as rainbow roll, and said she was confused. I was the one who got confused!!! I ordered salmon sushi and the price was 4.5 bucks for only one piece, I mean, I can get a pound of fresh salmon in Costco for only 8.5 bucks, and the sushi was just ordinary, not worth the money I paid. Overall, a very average restaurant.

I liked most of the sushi I had here except the sake (salmon) - usually I love sake but for some reason I didnt like this sake, I think it was too salty or something. Service was quick, but they didnt have the baby squid we ordered and made a couple small mistakes on our order. Overall I prefer Naomi Sushi down the road on El Camino.

They messed up our order and asked us to pay for the plate anyway. Definitely closer to low $$$ than two $$. Most rolls Ive ordered at other places were similar in quality but were at least 20% less. There was a fish bone in one of our sashimi pieces, which has never happened to me at a sushi restaurant before.

The fish is fresh and they have different dishes than other places ive been. We were there on a very windy night and the power went out on the block. They quickly set out candles and it was a cool experience. Thankfully, we had cash so it wasnt difficult to pay. The parking here is really difficult and the restaurant can get very crowded.

Ive eaten at Kanpai a number of times: the food is pretty tasty and prices are decent for downtown Palo Alto. On a recent visit, my friends and I had to leave early, though, because the staff cleaned the back hall with a cleaner so potent that the smell was making it hard for me to breathe. Not an appetizing experience while dining and I wish theyd waited to clean until after closing time.

I had California Rolls here and also the Spicy Tuna Roll. The crab in the California Roll really dry and tasted fishy. You usually cant go wrong with California rolls, but somehow they managed to do that. The Spicy Tuna Roll was decent nothing amazing but I wished a had ordered just that instead if the California Roll. Menu was also pretty pricey, service was subpar, our appetizer didnt come out we had to ask for it because they forgot. Over all dont know if Id ever come back.

I got the deluxe sushi (which is basically the omakase) and was thoroughly disappointed. Granted, I didnt have super high expectations given that it was only $34, but still, it couldve been better even at this price point.The texture of the fish were fairly decent, but they all lacked in freshness, and consequently flavor. Everything except for the unagi and the ikura gunkan was completely flavorless. The kani gunkan was dry and awful, tasting like it had been frozen for weeks. The amaebi had very little sweetness to it, and the sushi rice for everything was way too sticky and clung unpleasantly to the inside of my mouth. The unagi was the only piece that I actually liked.Judging from what everybody else was having, it became clear to me that this place mostly caters to people who get California rolls or chicken teriyaki and finish with a big bowl of green tea ice-cream. Maybe youd like it better if you order off of the American-Japanese menu. The authentic Japanese restaurant label on Google Maps is really misleading.I must say therere much better authentic sushi in the Bay Area at this price range.

IMO, the best sushi I’ve had in the Bay. The special toro sushi is the way to go here, but even normal yellowtail maki roll is *insanely* good. The fish is so fresh that it reminds me of 630am sushi at Tsikiji market in Tokyo.I always have great service when I’m here-not really getting all the meh reviews on service and food here. My friend and I were sitting at a table and the waiter asked us to move to the chairs right by the door....as if we didnt just paid $55 for food there. We didnt move, if fact, we sat comfortably at 1 of the tables.My friend wanted extra ginger with her meal so she politely asked him if she could have extra ginger. He said it would $.50. I would never recommend this place. The service is what makes the restaurant. I will never go here again. Just horrible!!!!

The three stars is basically for service because the people are really friendly. The sushi however is basically the same quality as grocery store sushi. I came here on a quiet Tuesday night and the place was about half full. I ordered the Special Chirashi, 2 pieces of salmon belly nigiri and an uni nigiri. The chirashi was lacking in quality sushi - it came with 2 tuna, 1 yellowtail, 1 salmon, 2 squid, 1 surf clam, 2 tamago, 1 shrimp, and that fake krab. All the fish tasted not fresh, the salmon belly was very fishy, and the other raw fish just seemed low quality and not fresh. The chirashi bowl was $18.50 and each salmon belly piece was $2.75. Definitely overpriced for the quality. Would not recommend unless you just want quick sushi with no wait.

For me it started with two salad-with-fish courses, a hot course (mango sauce and cheese?!), then 3 sashimi/4 sushi with miso soup, and ending with a red bean and green tea ice cream sandwich.
